The Agony and no ecstasy. Arsenal 0 Chelsea 3

Andre Marriner was a referee who contributed to the Arsenal woes today. By simply committing the sin that affects all Premiership referees, INCONSISTENCY. The denial of a perfectly good goal coupled by the inability to apply yellow cards by his own rules meant that Chelsea had the luxury of having the major decisions go their way. Ok, Sagna might have conceded a penalty in having brought down Anelka, but equally the clumsy flooring of Carlos Vela was worth a shout. But in the end the difference between the two teams was not the referee, it was the lack of cover in front of the back four when we lost Song at half time, and the inability to close down Chelsea where it mattered. The lack of ectasy? When did Arsenal ever look like scoring from a set piece? Robin van Persie aside, which dead ball specialist can we call upon at the moment? There are no routines, we put a cross into the danger area when frankly it becomes a wasted ball and we are then exposed for s counter attack.

For 25 glorious minutes in the first half Chelsea hardly touched the ball. But to be honest they didn’t need too. Eduardo was too flat footed and seemed to be suffering from the immense pressure of being point man, add to that the agony of this being by far the worst that I have seen Arshavin play at home, we were left with no inspiration. The first goal came from the failure of Nasri and Sagna to shut out Ashley Cole. The deft chip into Drogba was met by a side footed glancing finish of the highest quality from the Ivory Coast striker. Almunia was as usual in two minds whether to come out or stay on his line and so was in the wrong position to tip over the chip which settled softly inside the far post. The second goal was almost a carbon copy, but this time a sliding Gallas only managed to deflect the ball onto the chest of Vermaelen who seemed to be waiting for an authoritative move by Almunia. Again Ashley goal was the provider.

The entrance of Theo Walcott at the start of the second half should have made a difference, and to be honest it did, by pushing back the Chelsea back four. Yet again Arsenal suffered from the lack of quality crosses into the box or worst still when a flanking movement came into the middle, there was no midfielder any way near to launch a shot on target. Same old same old, trying to walk the ball into the net using the team ethic. Great for possession, utterly useless for game winning chance taking. Until we have a selfish attitude in front of goal instead of trying to lay on yet another assist to a team mate, we will continue to lose vital games. We netted within the quarter hour, a perfectly good goal after a series of rebounds and six yard box scrambles. Eduardo adjudged  to have played dangerously with a chest high raised boot, but really this was just the referee making mischief.

Andre Marriner was utterly unconvincing and as the cries of “You’re not fit to referee” rang around the Emirates, many Gooners began to realize the awful reality. The third consecutive defeat at the hands of our South London rivals, and the shame of slipping behind the scum in the table to fourth spot, albeit with a game in hand. The game was finally put beyond our reach when Fabregas conceded a foul in the danger area just outside the 18 yd box, and Drogba produced a piece of magic and using the side of his boot put the ball just inside the far right upright beyond the despairing dive of Almunia. The 3-nil score line was unfair, and a bitter pill to swallow.

There remains half the season left with an eleven point gap, it seems that any title aspirations went with our defeat by Sunderland. I have blamed Arsene Wenger before and I shall blame him again. It was not rocket science to predict that at some stage Robin van Persie would get injured. Having sold Adebayor he had to be certain of a replacement. He gambled after losing out on the Bordeaux striker Chamakh. The failure to yet again replace a key player will mean Arsenal football club will miss out on the chance of a title. I said at the start of the season, that our squad was not strong enough to win the league, and that it was a missed opportunity considering the weakening of Man United. I have seen nothing today that will convince me otherwise. But curiously, I do believe that we have what it takes to win a trophy, but that will be the FA Cup. Without a decent striker, don’t even dream of the Champions league.

Oh shut up. You completely lack perspective. Everybody lacks perspective when we lose to Manchester United or Chelsea. And your analysis is wrong anyway. We lost because of the DEFENCE. Get it ? D E F E N C E. As for Chamakh etc etc…. get real.. we have Bendtner, Vela, Walcott, Eduardo and Arshavin. Arshavin and Eduardo WERE NOT AT THE RACES. IT’S GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH NEEDING A STRIKER. EDUARDO AND ARSHAVIN ARE STRIKERS. Bendtner and VP are target men, powerful and INJURED. So stop sounding like a broken record. Vela and Walcott have NOT ENOUGH GAMES this season to make an impression against a team like Chelsea. YOU ARE BARKING UP THE WRONG TREE ANWAY. WE LOST THE GAME BECAUSE OF THE D E F E N C E. And the holes in the D E F E N C E.

Relax Muppet, defence is certainly a problem alright, but his argument for the offence makes sense as well. Face of the matter is we conceded 3, which is a bad sign for defences, and we scored none, which is a bad sign for offence. We have a lot of work to do.

Another possible analysis of the gane would be the one that suggests Chelsea had 2 nalied o penalties turned down.

The bottom line is the team that were top of the table made the team in 3rd place look like the gap between the two was much larger than that. For 1/ of the game you outplayed us in the middle of the field whee ou looked really good . . . . but you loked good in the middleby being weak at the top and at the back – and for that reason deservedly lost the game

What we would do this weeks until the next market opens?? No R.V.P = No goals.

    Eduardo sucks so bad.

Vela is too inexperienced to put him to play against real defenders like today.

    Arshavin is still depressed
    .
Bendtner is the same injuried or fit.

And Walcott starts to look like that players who you can see a lot of potential to become the next big thing and he simply doesnt. He runs and runs and then what? He just had a fantastic game against Croatia and unfortunately he belive in all the good things the press said about him of being the next great english player.

This defeat has far more to do with tactical inflexibility than any player or the ref or for that matter class. We need to to be as difficult to break down and tackle as hard as they do -I think they lack a bit of craft in midfield and can be beaten if stretched.Playing the way we do just plays into their hands.

The writing had been on the wall for som time. AW has chosen to ignore it. when Arsenal last won a trophy in 2005,he decided to tear up his blueprint and invest in youth.
Every season the fans have been told to be patient. He has said.”My boys will deliver” His inevstment in kids is causing Arsenal to fall futher behind.
This was the ideal game for him to prove his project is working and it failed miserably.

This defeat by chelseas shows the gulf in the two teams. Arsenal have been plagued by a poor defence these last five years.AW has chosen to ignore by focussing on his beautiful game.
yes it’s ajoy watching intricate patterns but not to get beaten by 3-0.

I hate to say but we need a change of direction. Wenger’s experiment is over, our team just can’t compete when it comes to playing tough football. Comparing players today, Chelsea have gladiators in all positions, we have perhaps three/four…our squad is not good enough to last a title challange.
Would the likes of Walcott, Denilson, Song, (hate to say it Eduardo) get into the Chelsea side? No chance, not even the bench.

we are not a football club, that stopped with DAVID DEIN,now we are a business and as long as we are making money this board and manager are more than happy,so the fans get a bit restless at times, not too worry, they will get over it,in the meantime we will keep fucking them with a smile,PATHETIC.

What a weird game, yet not that surprising.

Arsenal had more possession, more shots on goal, more corners and won the battle in the midfield in my opinion. Chelsea only had one shot on goal.

Chelsea are just too good in defence and defended in numbers. The tale of the tape is that Chelsea only had one shot on goal, yet won 3-0. Arshavin played well, he was our only threat in attack, Wenger was correct in keeping him on.

If the own goal wasnt scored and the free-kick wasnt scored, people would be talking very differently about the game.

As far as im concerned Arsenal out-played and dominated Chelsea from start to finish. The difference was Chelsea scored from their only chance, AND more haha. Which is quite unbelievable.

Having said all that, Arsenal are a few powerful players short of competing against a side like Chelsea. I believe right now, with van Persie out and Bentdner out, the 4-3-3 becomes useless. Wenger must revert to 4-5-1 or 4-4-2 until we get one of those two back.

Eduardo as a lone striker is nonsense.

This team reminds me of the “Brazillian team of the 1980′s” no genuine striker
great midfield options such as zico socrates falcao naive at back we have all the attributes of that side and no signs that we will win something this year .We have lost to Manchester United Manchester City and Chelsea playing similiarly . We may again drop points against Liverpool.
We need a Rooney A Torres A Drogba
at front efficient strikers who bully defenders i doubt if we have anyone like including Rvp
we were at our best when we had ADEBAYOR(i hate him though) EDUARDO and flamster in the middle yesterday there was no one in the middle to conect to our crosses.
SIGN CARLTON COLE or make it 6 7 8 9 years without a trophy

    arsenal realities after the match

1.arsenal cant win a game against top 6 if they continue to play like this..

2.all fkin dumbfuck inefficient strikers.they cant hold the ball for a sec when it is passed to them.total bullshit.
3.we lost the game certainly because of strikers.. not even one look good..still training amateurs.

    4. arsenal can continue without a trophy in next 6,7,8, years if continued with this team.

    5. cesc fabregas on his way to barcelona..better for his life than sucking at arsenal which cant win anything in real prospect.

    6. players lacks confidence and strong mental ability .becomes a cropper against so called big teams (remove arsenal from the list for god sake )

we lost this game coz of our forward line. we ddnt look like scoring and it was the same against sundeland we just flat going forward so we pass, pass, pass, pass while the other teams score. the manager must learn to change things is they are not working like the 4-3-3 right now

Looking at some of these comments makes me think some people have lost some perspective! Yes we were beaten and i am as annoyed as anyone about it! I am more annoyed at the fact that for the majority of the game we were the stronger team but again it was little mistakes that cost us. Chelsea don’t make those little mistakes. They are organised and efficent and if you don’t take your chances then they will punish you. FTK is correct with his assessment of the front line. I was very dissapointed in Eduardo today and you can see that he can not play the role of lone front man. His first touch was poor, his control let him down several times and his hold up play was non-existant! RVP can hold up the ball and his distribution is superb. He has more of a physical prescense this year too. Unfortuatly we lacked (and this stikes a dagger through my heart to say this!) a strong CF like Adebayor!

I think we can take heart from some of the performances but it is the same areas letting us down again:
1 – poor closing down of players on the ball.
    2 – Individual mistakes
3 – Trying to walk the ball into the net
4 – Not turning possession into goals.

It makes me more angry than these have been going on for several years now and have not been addressed. I also think that as another post says, some of these players do not have the mental toughness for this team.

The moment that summed it up was when Fabs was in possession and just kicked it to the Chelsea player, lost the ball and just put his head down. The team lack spirit and fight and all the glossy passing and movement can not hide that fact! :sigh:

    My take after the game:

    1. Let’s just enjoy Cesc Fabregas last season as an Arsenal player. He is soooo gone. The best hope for Arsenal is for Real and Barca to outbid each other and make a lot of money for the board and Kroenke to fund his Colorado Rapids soccer club.

    2. Wenger is out of his depth with the modern Premier League. Wenger should stick with Reserve League and continue to develop kids and leave the 1st team football to managers who are have their feet on the ground.

    3. Italian-style football (a.k.a antifootball where defense is paramount) is boring to watch but provides result.

    4. Somebody should inform Wenger that he has already sold Adebayor and Bendtner is out injured, so there is no point sending out those crosses to the middle.

    5. Currently, Arsenal’s best bet is for an RvP-type player to twist and turn in the box and get the goals from the ground. Nasri and Vela can fill that role.

    6. Chelsea’s midfield is not that good. It’s their defense that’s awesome.

WillyG, just to reply to some of your ‘takes’.

    1. Cesc was very poor yesterday and did not lead the team. His body language was that of Thierry Henry and it is not acceptable. John Terry would never do this, even when 3-0 down.

    2. Pathetic comment. Nothing more to be said on this.

    3. Would you pay £1500 a season to watch Chelsea? If you would, you are a mug.

    6. Chelsea’s midfield is an extension of their defence. Chelsea’s team is based on efficiency and power. They are not that creative. They overpower teams. It is effective, but, as said earlier, I wouldn’t want to watch it every week.

The balance of our squad is not quite right at the moment and this is something that AW needs to address. you can look at all the stats you like, but the key one yesterday was that for all the possession we had, we did not score. Our 3 most powerful players, RvP, Bendtner and Diaby were all missing and it cost us. We need more power to add to the technical ‘dwarves’ that we have.

    FTK,

I just can’t agree that we had “a perfectly good goal” disallowed. Eduardo’s boot was almost in the keepers face. Wenger’s gripes about the referee are just smoke and mirrors to deflect criticism away from the poor performance of his “big” players.

Surely it was a mistake to take off Song when both Arshavin and Nasri were so poor and either could have been replaced by Walcott without wrecking the defence.

Fabragas, by showing his petulance towards the end of the game let himself down and demonstrates his lack of leadership, can you imagine Adams or Vierra behaving like that?

Buy a striker Mr. Wenger! Or suffer another trophy-less season.

    question,

What do the arsenal fans really want?
do they want to be title contenders or do the want to just play fancy football and finish fourth every year trophyless?

If it’s the former I strongly suggest we as a fanbase get on his back and put him on his toes to change things.

If it’s the latter then I do not understand what all the bitching and commotion is about when you lose 3-0 to a team like chelsea.

Players like Bergkamp(Legend ), Pires, Viera, Keown, Henry(Legend), Adams(Legend), Edu, Overmars and Seaman(Legend) can win you the league and on a good day the champions league.

on the other hand players like Denilson, vela, walcott, bendtner, song, Nasri and Almunia can only finish fourth and get Arsenal to the CL and on a day like yesterday lose 3-0 to Chelsea.

I’ve never felt so ahamed of Arsenal all my entire life. It didn’t take much for chelsea to rip us apart.

I for one can say if we had defenders like adams and sol campbell on the pitch yesterday Drogba would be begging ancelotti to take him off.
offensively if we had bergkamp and henry up front John terry and carvalho would wish they were playing for the opposition.

This is what really annoys me the most.

MAN UTD Plays well = WIN
    LIVERPOOL Play well = WIN
    CHELSEA Play well = WIN
    ARSENAL Play well = ?

Football has changed a lot. it’s dead as far as am concerned. it’s not the way it use to be anymore thanks to Abramovich.

    Then again it’s an incentive
And wenger needs to realise this or get his skinny ass out of Arsenal.
