Wenger has a dig at Drogba after dismal defeat

paper

by CARL ELDRIDGE Arsene Wenger comes in for a bit of stick this morning in the papers after the dismal 3-0 defeat to Chelsea at the Emirates yesterday.

The Daily Mail says AW ‘astonishingly’ questioned Didier Drogba’s contribution as Chelsea moved five points clear at the top of the Barclays Premier League with the commanding win.

The paper points out that Chelsea striker Drogba scored twice, including a stunning free-kick, to take his goal tally against the Gunners to 10 in nine games.

But AW was not impressed with his performance, saying: ‘It’s funny because he doesn’t do a lot. You would be surprised by the number of balls he touched today. Drogba is in a period where he kicks the ball and it goes in.’
Sun columnist Steve Howard is in typically robust form with his views on the Arsenal and he writes: It does not get much worse than this for Arsenal.

Just two wins now in 15 against Chelsea, 11 points behind the leaders, the title as good as conceded and another humiliation to go with the 4-1 thrashing by the same opponents at the Emirates late last season.

We are not even in December and Arsene Wenger’s side have already lost four league games out of 13. At this rate, it could be a record-breaker under the Frenchman – for all the wrong reasons.

In the Mirror, AW has his say on referee Andre Marriner who denied Arsenal a way back into the game when he chalked off Andriy Arshavin’s 49th-minute goal because Eduardo had kicked the ball out of Chelsea keeper Petr Cech’s hands.

Wenger added: “It was the turning point. It was very unfair. How can he see Eduardo kicking the ball out of Cech’s hands when there was a Chelsea player who stops him from controlling the ball?

“Two-one is very important in these kind of games and has a big impact on the psychological security of Chelsea. That was a big mistake by the referee.

“Yes, Chelsea have strong players. Physically strong players. But that’s an impression as well when a team is 2-0 up and just defends in their half and plays on the break. It’s too easy to have that impression and I don’t share that point of view.”

Wenger also refused to accept that his team our out of the title race and maintained rampant Chelsea are still there for the taking.

He went on: “We are 11 points behind Chelsea. At the moment, our title race has taken a big blow. We have to win games before we speak about titles. The damage done at Sunderland was deeper, confidence wise, than it should have been.

“Theyíre in a very strong position. But, for me, they can still drop points. I’m convinced of that. That’s the impression I have. Like you specialists, I’m entitled to have an impression as well.”

If you pay a striker to score goals and he scores 2 against on of your title rivals does it really matter if he spent the rest of the game on the bench? The so-called professor would be better off looking at his own failure to bring any backbone ino the Arsenal team – where is your Adams, where is your Viera, where is yor Keown, where is your Bergkamp – these are people who win titles, not Bendtner and Arshavin.

With clubs like Chelsea, Man Utd and now City always outspending him and having the squad power to cope with injuries they are always going to be better placed to challenge.

Well done Chelsea on another bought win over Arsenal, you must be really proud with your record signings playing so well. Russian oil, that’s Chelsea’s backbone.

Shut up wenger, save your slabbering for those who deserve it, your own team, why dont you just put or shut up. We were ment to stand as men yesterday, well we failed miserably, the team simply is not good enough, i do think VP would have made some difference but he only papers over the cracks that are already there, yes we have a good sizable squad, but no way near good enough, to many midgets and like for like players. We still would have got beat by chelsea even if we had van playin, the painful truth is we should look at chelsea and see how they work, like a machine, wengers trying to be like barca, well barca we aint, look at there team and look at ours When january comes we need 3 new players which I said in august and we already had Verm but no1 else, we drastically need height in defence, midfeild and attack, until then we will be no better than w are now, and who knows spurs might even end up ahead of us.

Sorry Gareth but you’re trying to undermine the clear difference in ability between Chelsea and Arsenal by suggesting Chelsea spent more, so are somehow at an unfair advantage.

Wenger stands by his team when people say he should buy. £6 million on Chamakh might have given us someone to aim for up front on Sunday, who could hold up the ball, be physical and get on crosses.

I’m not saying it’s as easy as that, but Wenger claims he’s not buying because he doesn’t need to. In the meantime, Chelsea DO buy players – and the difference in ability is clear.

I should point out I would love us to build a successful team in Wenger’s image again – but he needs someone to make him more competitive. We’ve need built an entire team from developing young players – it’s a myth.

Wenger has a great scouting system and an eye for potential he can nurture – but that has got him 80% of a title-winning squad. We need to add players to that, in the same way we had Adams, Keown and Bergkamp to complement Vieira, Petit and Anelka; and when we bought with Campbell and Pires to help blossoming players like Henry, Edu, Toure and Cole for the Invincibles.
What can he do? He’s fighting the tide. With clubs like Chelsea, Man Utd and now City always outspending him and having the squad power to cope with injuries they are always going to be better placed to challenge.
May I make a couple of comments as a Chelsea supporter at the game yesterday?

It seems to me that there is a fundamental difference of opinion about what sort of club Arsenal is or should aspire to be.

In my view you can either be a “big” club who challenge for everything they enter and would expect to win trophies, or you can be a “well run club” who look at financial considerations first and foremost.

If you want to be the former then you are underachieving and if the latter then you are about the best possible example it’s capable of being.

Reading some comments this morning bemoaning the lack of a big strong centre forward – you had one for the last two years and sold him!

Arsenal are a selling club. With the exception of Van Persie and Fabergas, Wenger has sold many decent players over the years and not properly replaced them.

Wenger’s first instinct is to play youngsters, build them up and then accept big money offers, replacing them from the ranks with the cycle starting again; how Everton would love to be that successful.

But Everton don’t get revenue from 60,000 high paying patrons at every home game, their owners are not a succession of the worlds wealthy and their fans don’t expect to win everything (or even anything).

Perhaps if you are the worlds best at being the “well run club” then it may be possible to get the success you want from being a hybrid but that doesn’t seem to be Wenger’s way.

So come on – what do you want to be?

Gareth, you are right about the initial Abramovic surge, but two things, a) we were anyway challenging the top of the PL before him and we had already had a good run in the ECL – so no comparison with Citeh and b) very little has been spent recently but the best is being got out of this squad of what SAF refers to as old men! The fact remains that Arsenal do not have the physically strong players to compete at the very top in this league and some of those who would have done that job have been sold by Wenger – presumably not because he was told to raise funds, therefore by his choice. With one exception, you cannot win anything with kids – but those kids were an exceptional generation for Man Utd.

you are right about AW. He is a bad loser. Actually the current failings in Arsenal are his responsibily. He shd have strengthened the defence and midfield.
    Arsenals defence is a joke.
AW wants to play pretty/attacking soccer. When the attack breaks down the gunner defenders can’t cope with the fast breakaway.
He better know all the epl sides have wised up his game paln and if he persists he will bring down Arsenal to mediocre status.

    question,

What do the arsenal fans really want?
do they want to be title contenders or do the want to just play fancy football and finish fourth every year trophyless?

If it’s the former I strongly suggest we as a fanbase get on his back and put him on his toes to change things.

If it’s the latter then I do not understand what all the bitching and commotion is about when you lose 3-0 to a team like chelsea.

Players like Bergkamp(Legend), Pires, Viera, Keown, Henry(Legend), Adams(Legend), Edu, Overmars and Seaman(Legend) can win you the league and on a good day the champions league.

on the other hand players like Denilson, vela, walcott, bendtner, song, Nasri and Almunia can only finish fourth and get Arsenal to the CL and on a day like yesterday lose 3-0 to Chelsea.

I’ve never felt so ahamed of Arsenal all my entire life. It didn’t take much for chelsea to rip us apart.

I for one can say if we had defenders like adams and sol campbell on the pitch yesterday Drogba would be begging ancelotti to take him off.
offensively if we had bergkamp and henry up front John terry and carvalho will look like would wish they were playing for the opposition.

Football has changed a lot. it’s dead as far as am concerned. it’s not the way it use to be anymore thanks to Abramovich.

And wenger needs to realise this or get his skinny ass out of Arsenal.

I was pretty much agreeing with you Vash until you got to the Abramovic tirade. At the end of the day its not about the money its about who you sign and, in your case who, you let go. Your board chose to buy a fancy new ground so now all your money goes in repayments to the bank. I would rather have our cranky old stadium and challenge properly every year, maybe it is different at Arsenal, though any Gooner I know is well fed up with being so far off the pace for 4 years now.

there’s only one word for arsenal’s performance yesterday; SHAME. did you realize the tactics of chelsea. cashley cole never came out until the last third of the first half and boom, he led to the goal; cashley, for all the boos, forced vam’s error blah blah blah. in a few words, AW needs the highbury grove or he gets out of arsenal.
