AW: No trophies but my best years as boss

arsene

by CARL ELDRIDGE None of us need reminding of the silverware drought at the Emirates over the past four years. But reminded we are this morning in today’s Sun as AW claims the trophyless years at Arsenal have been his best as a boss.

The paper says the Frenchman insists moving to a new stadium and keeping the team challenging at the top on a budget has given him more satisfaction than winning trophies.

Arsenal last lifted the title in 2004 while their last trophy was the FA Cup win in 2004. But AW said: “The last four years have been the most challenging period of my career. But it is not linked with not winning a trophy.

“Moving into a new stadium and keeping the team at the top means, for me, my best period has been in the last four years. To move into a stadium with less resources, respect the fact we have still made some money every year without the team dropping down a level.”

Some good news in this morning’s Mail, which reports that Samir Nasri has escaped punishment despite a stamp on Hull City’s Richard Garcia missed by referee Steve Bennett but seen clearly by millions of TV viewers.

Our 3-0 win at the Emirates was shown live on ESPN on Saturday and BBC’s Match of the Day later focused on the flashpoint which triggered a mass confrontation of players, pushing and pulling at each other, says the paper. On the replays, Nasri can clearly be seen lifting his boot and sinking his studs on to Garcia’s ankle and foot during a stoppage. Garcia collapsed in pain and a skirmish broke out, it claims

When he got the situation under control, Bennett showed a yellow card to Nasri and Stephen Hunt but told Hull’s players the pair had been booked for their roles in the fracas. The referee then admitted to the Football Association he had not seen Nasri’s stamp and agreed to examine the TV footage.

But, after reviewing the evidence yesterday, Bennett decided no further action was necessary because he could see nothing worthy of a straight red card for violent conduct.
The Mirror today claims an exclusive saying AW will come under increasing pressure in January to splash out on a top class striker in the transfer market.

They say AW is publicly insisting that he will only buy if the right deal becomes available but is acutely aware that some of the club’s hierarchy are very keen for him to make a signing. Shareholders have made it clear to board members that they believe Wenger should buy in January to appease fans and also show that the club are genuine title contenders.

And with the club’s ownership at the centre of a power struggle between US tycoon Stan Kroenke and Uzbeki businessman Alisher Usmanov, the board know they must keep influential shareholders onside. The paper says AW is keen to bring in a striker and has got West Ham’s Carlton Cole, Bordeaux’s Marouane Chamakh and Toulouse’s Andre-Pierre Gignac on his hit-list.

But the paper says AW steadfastly refuses to be bullied into making signings – especially if he feels his targets are over-priced. It adds that we can get Cole for around £9m because of West Ham’s financial problems, Chamakh is a free agent next summer and Toulouse want in excess of £15m for Gignac.

We are also said to be watching developments on Bayern Munich’s Luca Toni, who is available on a free transfer and may be a last ditch option as Nicklas Bendtner and Robin van Persie are both out injured.

One shareholder insisted to Mirror Sport that Wenger’s dealings in January could be crucial in keeping people onside with Kroenke’s takeover bid ahead of Usmanov. Kroenke has taken his stake to 29.9 per cent and may launch a full-scale takeover bid after next May. But Usmanov has also increased his stake to 26 per cent and may be able to buy Lady Nina Bracewell Smith’s 15.9 per cent stake.

Elsehwere today, the Times reports that the surgeon who operated on Robin van Persie’s ankle has promised the Arsenal forward that he will make a full recovery from the damaged ankle ligaments that effectively ended his season.

AW has revealed that the operation had been a success and that the Holland international could target May for his comeback. The Frenchman added that he had yet to relay the good news to his player.

“When you have such a big surgery, the opinion of the surgeon is important,” Wenger said. “Will he be the player he was before? We had a clear answer, ‘yes’.”

Van Persie damaged his ankle while playing for his country in a friendly international against Italy last month. “At the moment, he can’t do anything,” Wenger said. “He’s just sitting at home and waiting to work again.” AW added that Van Persie has an outside chance of being fit by April. “It’s virtually the rest of the season,” he said. “I haven’t said that to Robin. Hopefully, we’ll have a good surprise.”

Why is Nasri treading on Garcia’s foot described as a stamp?

‘Stamp’ reminds me of the Man City game when he-who-must-not-be-named almost blinded RvP and kicked/stamped Fabregas.

Those are stamps. Nasri stepped on Garcia, who went down like he was shot. But I’ve not heard anyone in the media even looking at what Garcia did.

And what about the penalty Hull got? Completely bizarre. See the replay. Fagan dived.

And people say you’re paranoid if you say that the media is Anti-Arsenal;….

It’s not just the media that’s anti-Arsenal it’s also the majority of the Arsenal blogs, who rather than support an Arsenal player are parroting crap about a non existent ‘stamp’ manufactured by the media. It was no worse than anything perpetrated by the Hull players and Stephen Hunt should not have been on the pitch at the end of that match for his behaviour throughout, but where’s the comment on that? Where’s the outrage? Our players are accused of being soft, but the minute they stand up for themselves, they have to face a chorus of holier than thou disapproval?

after watching yet again as taped game. nasri cheekily clipped the heel of garcia and then put his foot down on garcia’s foot. inadvertant? erm, being that type of player me self no, payback for… 15th minute ref blew whistle for offside yet hunt clattered almunia when simply reaching down to gather ball at a stoppage, almunia was pissed and caused not expecting to be clattered could have really been hurt, 18th minute again hunt late nick at almunia for which Big Al, rolled the ball out to defender directly in front of hunt which could have been an egg in face move but …
23rd minute hard tackle up field on one of our lads not punished with a card but again could have been an eduardo.
at nasri incident free kick. hull players grabbing ball and standing on free kick spot stopping us from taking the kick which led to incident. at incident interesting that Big Al ran length of pitch to participate, probably due to unfair treatment he had previously endured.

there were a couple more incidents tackles on us which justice was not fully meted out by ref through the half, all dealt with so deftly with denilson’s goal from second free kick incident near same spot as previous in injury time of first half (received goal of week award from Fox soccer channel in USA)

and in payback, Eboue absolutely clatered hunt from behind to weight bearing leg which was so blatant and deliberate as to be laughable (erm like LOL) for which he did not get booked.
actual headline for the game to the league was “try to f*ck with us and we will bite back” It was the game which epitomized this team and its backbone and that it has bottle.

we should all be very proud of this display and I suggest a rewatch to each of you. not our first 11 as vp out but… our sicknote 11 can still kick your ass!!!!

    A bit of “Breaking News”

Plus Markets have announced that Sir Chips Keswick, a director of Arsenal Holdings PLC, acquired fifteen ordinary shares in the company at £8,500 each. This brings his total holding to fifty five shares or 0.09% of shares issued.

That’s fifteen less shares that that the Ugly Uzbeck and Silent Stan can’t get their hands on.

While I agree that a lot has been done to keep Arsenal afloat financially which is good, but this does not take away the fact that Arsenal has failed in the number one football objective – win trophy!

WRONG, Passenal – a majority of Arsenal blogs are defending Nasri and attacking Hunt and the Hull players, that’s FACT – but that fact doesn’t fit into your black-and-white view of Arsenal blogs.

The one criticism I have of Arsenal blogs on this incident is going along with the word “stamp” – Nasri never stamped on anyone, he trod on Garcia’s foot.

Yet another incredibly boring, predictable, one-note scolding from Passenal, who hates Arsenal blogs and gooners so much that he spends all his time on the net visiting Arsenal blogs just to post lectures and scoldings from his self-righteous sanctimonious perch.

Passenal, if you hate gooners so much, then don’t read Arsenal blogs. You never try to ENGAGE anyone in actual discussion or debate, you just scold scold and scold.

People are blinded by “win a trophy or go win a trophy or go”.

But I really think keeping the team at this top level, moving to a new staidum and being recognized as the second team in the world that play the most beautiful football is a bigger trophy.
