Ftk Blog:Why selling Fabregas would be a betrayal

fabregas03092008

After twenty eight glorious minutes against Aston Villa, Cesc Fabregas showed why he is Arsenal’s best player, and above all convinced me that he must not be sold in the summer. Since the young Catalan came to our club, I was so impressed with his maturity and ability to read the game, that I became an instant fan. I recall getting my shirt number sorted, and it was then that not even the staff in the Arsenal printing shop were certain about how to spell his name. he was yet to appear on the official lists.Yet after scoring his goal in the 5-1 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Carling Cup, there was something about him that convinced me that he was going to be some player for Arsenal.

I managed to meet him soon afterwards and he seemed surprised that someone had his shirt number and even more so that I wanted his autograph. I treasure that shirt in my collection to this day. Each season, Fabregas has improved in some way, and perhaps since the mounting expectation of his departure to Barcelona I had resigned myself to losing our Captain. It seemed that Arsene Wenger would soon cash in on our player and accept an offer of 40 million pounds in order to strengthen the squad further.

There was something that unnerved me about his appointment as Captain, it followed the controversy about Gallas, and seemed to fit with Arsene Wenger’s strategy of giving the armband to the last two captains who were also the subject of intense transfer speculation, namely Paddy Vieira and Thierry Henry. It was almost a way to convince the player that to accept the captaincy and then leave the club shortly afterwards would be unthinkable. A form of emotional blackmail even.

The performance by Cesc yesterday was the most complete and potent performance that I have seen from the player in terms of the impact on the game and the significance of the result. Cesc has always been a big game player, and his goal against AC Milan in the Champions League 2007/8 season proved to all that he was world class and that he could provide the magic needed to become a match winner. This years World Cup will see him play more games for Spain and I expect the pressure for his departure to mount.

I had previously written that I would not blame Cesc if he left our club because of the failure of Wenger to provide the additional class talent alongside him. In fact I am now changing that view. I am changing it mainly because of the activities of the Arsenal Board in general and Kroenke Fiszman and Usmanov in particular. Arsenal Football Club will soon be the subject of a takeover battle and it is unclear who will win, but with only 17 shares left before Stan Kroenke is obliged to make a bid for the club, it is merely a question of timing. Alisher Usmanov seems unwilling to show his hand and continues to buy shares as a possible stragtegy to increase the base trading value. So many individuals getting richer at the fans expense, it makes me angry, when the playing squad is being starved of the investment needed to take this club to the next level. Finally through his transfer dealing and the intelligent selling of players Arsene Wenger has enough funds to make vital purchases as well as extend contracts.

I would first dispel any rumour that Fabregas is under a pre-contract agreement with Barcelona, Cesc is contracted to the club at least until 2014 and so under the rules a player cannot sign a pre-contract deal unless he is in the last year of his contract. The concerns about Cesc relate to the fact that he could buy out his contract for around 16 million next year. A sum that would be increased if additional contract extensions including a signing on fee were agreed. Fabregas loves our club and he wants to deliver a trophy to us. Yesterday he proved that he is now entering his prime. Remember that he is just 22 years of age. He is entering that five year window that world class midfielders of his talent seek to add trophies and victories worthy of their pedigree.

So if Fabregas’s best years as a player are yet to come, then this is why selling him next summer would amount to a gross betrayal of Arsenal fans who have been starved of success for the last five seasons. We could never buy a player of his class to replace him, so why do we need to replace someone that we already have? Arsene Wenger only sells players who have past their peak or who are unsettled. The selling of Thierry Henry proved that sometimes he gets it wrong. Barcelona were improved by the addition of Thierry Henry and he helped them to their most successful season ever in Spain. The inflated price received for Kolo Toure and Adebayor were opportunities to good to be missed. To sell Fabregas before he has delivered his best years for Arsenal Football Club would be just plain wrong.

I argue further that because we now have a transfer fund established, and with Arsenal Football club’s burgeoning academy of young talent, we have no need to cash in on Fabregas. If this were done it would only weaken our prospects of winning the Champions League. Yes we have Aaron Ramsey who would be a good replacement but he is not ready to take over the role of Fabregas in the first team. Denilson will never be in the same class, and unless there is something that I have missed there is one powerful message that we do not want to give to our best players, and that is if they wish to win the Champions League, then they have to leave Arsenal Football Club. This would be the greatest betrayal of all.

What a lot of nonsense. Cesc does not want to leave and Arsene does not want to sell him, so what exactly is the point of this drivel?

The only problem would be if AW leaves ARsenal to join MC or RM.In that case he could bring with him the talnted players at Arsenal who will shrivel. Once that happens sets in it’s diificult to recover. Just look at Leeds.
Howevr the scenario is the worst case .But you never know. To quote Vira’s words: “You can never say never”

I do believe Cesc will leave at the end of the season and I was just starting to come to terms of it happening till yesterday. The guy is such an amazing talent he literally came on for 23 minutes yesterday an one us the game, the most worrying thing is that the team just doesn’t seem to tick when hes not in the side. The way he can pick a pass and tun away from opponents with his touches has to be a gift from God. Remember Cesc has no pace so u would think it would be hard for him to do but no not are little magician, He makes it look so easy If he hadn’t of came on yesterday I really don’t think we would had not one the game.

Somehow i dont think Arsene would even contemplate selling Cesc. Its clear to me that he makes our team tick & when the lad isnt playing, the team play well enough but dont have that final edge to knock teams out of the box. Dont get me wrong, i think the players we have a are outstanding & other teams will be jealous of the talent we have but we do need strengthening in the right places. AA23 & TV5 are awesome examples. If arsene can just bring in another midfielder & a proven goalscorer we are laughing but again theres no way AW will let our captain & heartbeat of the club leave. Plus cesc doesnt want to. Dont know how many times the lad has to say that he loves the club & wants to stay. People should start listening a bit more!!

Cesc seemed to have at least some pace when he kept up with Theo’s run for the second goal yesterday!

Pretty harsh comments here- It surely is not rubbish that Barca think they own Cesc and Madrid think they can buy anyone- and Arsenal have a recent history of selling stars thus giving the clear impression that they will sell if the price is right -like 80m Euros. Only last year Wenger stated that the club had to sell a star a year to break even.

It all comes down to what the player wants in the end, If he wants to go he will go but if he’s happy at Arsenal he will stay, A lot depends on what Arsene Wenger does as Fab sees him as his mentor

Thank you all for your comments

I do not write pointless blogs, I write blogs based upon the thoughts that occur to me either during the game or shortly afterwards.

this blog came from a thought that flashed thorugh my mind as i left the Emirates after that wonderful win…

What if Arsenal decided to cash in on Fabregas because of the fans whining about the lack of transfer monies?

It is not beyond reasoning to see a scenario where had Toure and Adebayor not been sold, then the sale of Fabregas would be the next logical move.

As it stands, I do not think that Arsene Wenger is contemplating selling Fabregas, so this blog is in a sense a shot across the bows of anyone at the club who may even be nuturing that possibility. They must know that any sale of the player would be be seen as a betrayal of the grassroot fans who live think and breathe Arsenal.

FABREGAS IS ARSENAL THROUGH AND THROUGH!

We must make noise in support of our skipper and make sure that he feels loved.

Excellent post. Certainly not rubbish. It is not inconceivable that Fabregas might leave in the summer. And adding a deeper perspective to its possibility is welcomed.

    Well done sir.

Fabregas should not leave Arsenal before hes 26. That way he would have giving us a good chunk of his best years, and become an Arsenal legend. Whilst still having enough time to produce a good chunk of his best years at Barcelona and becoming a Barcelona legend also.

Can we just forget about what might happen next season and concentrate on winning tropies this season? It will be a great disservice if by making so much noise about this and end up unsettling this guy. Granted we struggle wifout him so does chelsea without drogba n essien, and man united without vidib n rooney. The best we can do is get behind these boys and let them know we love them no matter what might happen next season. Meanwhile it luks lyk sm1 in blue myt drop point again today i do hope we’ll take full advantage of that,GOD BLESS AFC.

On the issue of AW getting it wrong when letting TH14 go, I’m not so sure, after all Thierry wanted to leave so Arsene probably felt his performances would drop further as his body language and or fitness was already going South.
Additionally I also remember reading that his insistance of always receiving the ball left the likes of Cesc totally intimidated by his strops. Don’t get me wrong I loved the guy but perhaps Arsene got it right if only for the fact that Cesc is still at Arsenal.

    Thanks Damien…

Tunde Bello, I understand your point, but surely we need to see the bigger picture, currently as I write those Russian tarts are 1 -nil down, so losing 3 points on us is a possibility, but we have 30 minutes to go.

Berg10, you are indeed right, i recall the way that Thierry Henry’s presence caused several palyers to feel uncomfortable. Reyes?
But his ability to win games on his own made up for that, I’d welcome Thierry Henry back with open arms

I see we have Passenal’s daily dose of scolding on Arsenal blogs. What a boring troll. Passenal obviously has no friends because no one can take the constant scowling and self-righteous bullsh!t.

I don’t think AW wants to sell Cesc, FTK. But I do worry about Cesc. I know he’s loyal but he’s not a saint. He’s a young, highly talented footballer with big, glamorous clubs offering him lots of money and trophies. How long can we rely on his loyalty?

And I have to rant about the media this weekend: what the hell is this hysterical media gushing over Rooney and Utd’s defeat of HULL as if it was an achievement equal to beating the 4th place team? We beat Hull last week and got no media attention for it at all, despite 3 great goals. You’d think Utd and Rooney beat the European champions, ffs! Skysports profiled Rooney and Cesc as the two men of the weekend — they talked about Rooney as if he’d slayed a dragon.

But they did provide some interesting statistical comparisons between the 2 players. Cesc v. Villa – played 27 mins, scored 2 goals, 0 assists, 3 key passes and 92% pass completion. Rooney v. Hull played 90 mins, scored 1 goal, 1 assist, 2 key passes and 64% pass completion. In the PL this season, Cesc has played 16 games, scored 9 goals and made 12 assists. Rooney played 18 games, scored 13 goals and made 2 assists.

No Harper Rooney showed great desire yesterday to make up for his mistake he made of helping Hull get a penalty when they scored to make the game 1-1. Only great players like Rooney are capable of producing so much drive and quality this is a sign of a great player.

James, rarely do I agree with your opinion but it’s true Rooney did show great desire but as performances go, no better than Cesc’s indivdual Captain’s effort which didn’t seem to capture as much media attention. Always!!

For the record, although we stuttered in the first half this is not unusual, with or without Cesc, but after the half time “pep” talk and a few tactical changes we often come out looking better for the second 45.
Don’t forget we were up against the meanest defence in the Prem this season and Sky’s analysis presented by Andy Gray, (though probably a back team effort)showed how well organised they were so we shouldn’t ridicule Eddy and Arshavin for their weak efforts on goal as reported widely but recognise the strength of the Villa defence so all in all a great result.

Oh spare me! Yeah Rooney showed great desire, I never said he’s not a great player – but sorry, no, there’s no comparison between what he and Cesc did.

    block 30 row 4 .
    great post.
whether or not arsene wants to sell hom or not. you have to remember the following he was a barca fan and a catalan . All his family .. friends from childhood are there. It is every ‘catalan kids’ dream to play for barca .. and dont forget he was originally from there school of excellence before we cheekily pinched him for peanuts. going on.. he is a ONLY natural replacement for either of the ageing xavi or inesta .. hes spanish .. very similar player and a catalan.. You can bet 1000% they will put in a massive bid for him.. contact or not. and if we do not (a) give him a massive pay increase & (b) buy a 1st class striker and defensive midfielder along with a goal keeper ( all of which should have some height) which would mean £40m at least. i imagine the pull will be to much for him.. maybe not (b) so much but when you look at all the pros and cons which he will. all of this will be taken into consideration.. who hes playing with , possiblilty for trophies.. life in spain.. new english tax laws.. 50% anything over £150k he will be under pressure from everyone..
Lets just hope the board put there hand in there pocket pull out my 5 lots of season ticket money for the last 19 years and offers a decent contract and buys one or two to make us the real deal. because we are falling at the final fence right now.. One love people ..
P.s excuse the mistakes havent bothered to check grama

Guys, do NOT ever underestimate the magician, Arsene Wenger. He will Not contemplate on selling Cesc Fab. Cesc is the NUCLEUS of the team presently, and it only stands to reason to use him as the glue for the rest of the players.

People speculate about Cesc moving on because he is Spanish and not English and WRONGFULLY, believe that ALL Spanish lead to Rome…Cesc LOVES Arsenal :)
