We’ll soon be back on Song…

song1
by CARL ELDRIDGE Without wishing to belittle the competition, I throw my hands in the air at the delight of Alex Song returning to the Arsenal sooner rather than later after whoever he plays for on an international level lost to another inconsequential side in a pointless cup for which no-one apart from Angolan rebels gives a shit.

And so to this morning’s Daily Mail, which rerminds us our hero is heading for the plane back to Blighty. It reports that Cameroon’s early exit will be welcomed by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger since holding midfielder Song may now be available for the Gunners’ crucial run of league matches against Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool.
You don’t say.

And with Arsenal headlines thin on the ground this morning, let’s give some Stoke no-mark a chance to air his views to the great and the good who follow arsenalinsider.com. The Sun carries a (thankfully) brief story from someone called Mama Sidebe (got the name of an Angolan brothel madam, that one) who reckons ‘Stoke know how to get under Arsenal’s skin – and dent their title hopes’.

The paper says he helped dumpus out of the FA Cup on Sunday and reminds us that we have to go back for more of the same in the league next month. Sidibe said: “We know Arsenal don’t like it when you put too much pressure on them. We can beat anyone at the Britannia and that makes it easier for us. What we did was not to let them keep the ball too much.

“It’s always hard to play against them. They made changes but Arsenal are not a first and second team – all their players are very good and can pass the ball well.” How astute, Mr Sidebe.

Away from the glorious Gunners for a split second and when I saw this headline ‘Juventus bid to poach Benitez’ in the Mirror I thought to myself…surely lightly boiled would suffice. Moving on,  and elsewhere in the Mirror says AW has admitted to having major doubts over William Gallas’ fitness.

Gallas has been nursing a back injury and has been struggling to get through games and that is a major concern for Arsenal’s title run-in. AW says that 32-year-old Gallas has had to play through the pain barrier to finish some of Arsenal’s games, and that was a major factor in his decision to re-sign veteran Sol Campbell.

Wenger said: “Touch wood, until now he (Gallas) has been clear of injuries. But we have played him on the limit a few times where we didn’t know before the game how long he would last. He always manages to get through the 90 minutes. Gallas has played all the Premier League games. Once you are in a routine, winning keeps the confidence high. You have to rotate. You cannot always play with the same XI until the end of the season. That doesn’t work.”

And the same paper reminds us (although I would prefer not to reminded, actually as he is not good enough) that Vito Mannone has signed a new long-term contract – and immediately set his sights on becoming the Gunners’ No.1.

The paper says that Italian Mannone, 21, got an extended run in the first team earlier in the season when Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski were injured and wants another crack at being first choice.

Mannone said: “Every day when I go on the training pitch I try to show everyone that I’m the best. It’s normal – every goalkeeper does that. I’m not working for nothing,
I’m working to achieve something. I know I have time on my side and am very young, so it’s good for me that Arsenal and the manager believe in me. I will try to become the No.1 as soon as possible.”

God help us…Almunia, Fabianksi and now him…then again, AW has never been the best at finding keepers, as he?

I’m an arsenal fan, been for years and I’m glad Song is going back for the crunch games ahead. But to suggest the cup is nonsense and nobody except angolan rebels care about it is a disrespect to Africans. It is the biggest sporting event over here. It is more than a tournament… more of a tradition if you know what I mean.

I was just worried that we may find no replacement for him at gunners with Key games. This article is not worth the paper it’s written on. Im an Arsenal fan from Bombay – India and I agree with Kibir. To say that the Africa Cup of Nations is a “pointless cup” is so narrow minded and rascist. Even tho Im an Asian, I know how much football means to Africa. I feel sorry for the author who has no idea of Football apart from what goes on in England.I have no regard for the authors parochial views on the game.

the only reason anyone wud think there’s even a remote chance of England winning the world cup is if they think like Carl Eldridge! they dont know anything apart from what goes on in england. they stay there and give themselves accolades like wayne rooney is the best striker in the world. gerard is the best nidfielder in the world, terry is the best defender in the world. if you watched barcelona last season you would realise rooney isnt fit to clean eto’s boots but he plays in the pointless cup. like wenger sed you are brainwashed by the media and you aren’t even smart enough to know. tell me carl is football going home this summer?

Well Eldo I guess you deserved a few of the foregoing comments for your rather silly references to the ACN. Obviously this competition is of significant importance in Africa and beyond.

Having said that, it is sad that so many people cannot express their disaproval of your comments without resorting to abusive and racist remarks.

On a more sensible topic, Alex Song cannot return soon enough for me, I would even welcome the early return of Eboue ;-)

hey calm down people. the man is allowed to have an opinion. just because you may disagree with it, why not make your point and leave out the abuse?

as an arsenal fan first, i would prefer that all international tournaments were either not played as often or were much shorter and i would get rid of all friendlies.

as for the acn i have to disagree with you eldo. its not pointless to the millions who watch it from all over the world and often the mathces are very entertaining due to terrible goalkeeping awful refereeing and and such high intensity with loads of goals because most of the teams don’t bother to do that much defending. the acn and the copa america are arguably better than the euros because of the focus on attack (rather than eg. italy and germany) and almost all the games are exciting with lots of chances and usually goals at both ends. these are some of the reasons why i quite like the tournament although i would prefer it if it wasn’t so frequent or during our season but we can’t help that.

    keep the articles coming…

good article eldo. the people who are crying racism here are about as intellectual as those people who have a go at you about the daily news round-up (some still havn’t grasped the concept that the roundup is designed to save time, so we can view one site instead of multiple).

Yes im sure african people care about the african cup of nations, but in the grand sceme of things i couldnt care less either. This is an arsenal website, therefore we want arsenal to win it all, and by song and to a lesser extent eboue are away its costing us. Just like the stupid friendly between the dutch and italy cost us due to rvp’s injury. The ACN is to regular and smack bang in the middle of the year so its a liability to alot of teams. Yes we are all patriotic to our countries but stop throwing around words like ‘racsist’ because its such an ugly word that gets thrown around far to often.

Its eldo’s opinion, and he has every rite to call it a nothing cup if he wants, i agree. Just like i think the asian cup is a nothing cup even though australia are in it. the world cup is another story. Keep up the good work eldo

he had one good game. he made quite a few mistakes in the other games he played though. he is still very young for a goalkeeper. casillas was probably the youngest keeper to play in a top sides first team at around 23 so he still has a long career ahead of him but at the moment he’s not that good. also when he went out on loan he played like 2 games and was so bad they didn’t want him anymore. hopefully he’s improved since then.

he did do well in that game, but he wasnt to crash hot in other games. Fabs is surely the best out of the three. Fair enough he had a shocker against stoke but his other games have been really good. We all know almunia will make another howler proving how average he is, we just dont want it to be a costly one. He flaps at everything and gives no confidence to the back four. Surely his time is numbered

“a pointless cup for which no-one apart from Angolan rebels gives a shit.”

Literally hundreds of millions of Africans certainly give a damn about the cup. What an incredibly ignorant comment. Just because YOU don’t care about it doesn’t mean you can speak for everyone else.

Look mate, I support the Arsenal, everything else in football comes second, including this tin-pot tournament. No matter how many Africans, Australians, Aberdonians or whoever watch it, and enjoy it, it is not for me. No doubt you scrutinise every kick on whatever channel it is shown and fair play to you. But my only interest is getting players back on AFC duty — as is the case with the majority of blokes I know who go to the games — because the Arsenal come first. Song comes back is the story. And of course I give it recognition, simply by mentioning it. How much interest did we pay to the event before Arsenal/Premier League players were involved? Nishmans. BTW, Song is a mentally tough character having lost his dad aged three and recently losing a brother I believe. Don’t kid youself that even if he is ‘sad’ at going out with Camerooon that he will let it affect his performances.
