Arsenal Slip To Third – Match Report

thirdkit

Arsenal slipped to third in the Premier League after being held to a goalless draw at Aston Villa.

Cesc Fabregas and Tomas Rosicky both hit the woodwork but the Gunners were unable to break down a staunch home defence superbly marshalled by Richard Dunne and James Collins.

The Londoners now find themselves three points behind Chelsea, who also have a game in hand, and a point behind Manchester United ahead of Sunday’s big clash between the sides at the Emirates.

An open game that benefited from neither side fielding a midfield destroyer saw Fabregas come closest to breaking the deadlock in first-half injury-time when he struck the post.

The Arsenal captain beat three men with a surging run from deep before driving a diagonal shot against the far post. Rosicky then looked to turn in the rebound but Aaron Ramsey was in his way and eventually the Czech screwed his shot wide.

Brad Friedel’s only real save of the opening period was when a corner dropped into the path of Denilson whose 20-yard drive was turned around the post by the diving American custodian.

At the other end Manuel Almunia had been called into action early when Emile Heskey’s reverse pass was deflected into the path of Gabriel Agbonlahor whose shot was pushed away by the Spaniard, diving to his left.

Ashley Young also curled a free-kick just wide of the post and then set up a good chance for Stewart Downing but the former Middlesbrough winger volleyed a deep cross over the top.

If the first-half was even then the visitors certainly had the better chances in the second period.

Arsenal came close once more three minutes after the break. Gael Clichy’s low cross from the left was only pushed away by Friedel into the path of Fabregas but Dunne was on hand to make a crucial close-range block.

Then the woodwork saved Villa again after a superb run from Arshavin who picked the ball up on halfway and beat Carlos Cuellar and Collins. His shot was blocked by the onrushing Friedel and dropped to Fabregas who fed Rosicky but the Czech hit the crossbar with a toe-poke from eight yards.

Villa were not without chances of their own as Downing nodded wide from close range after Bacary Sagna failed to deal with a deflected cross that looped into the air.

Ahead of a busy period, Arsene Wenger was dealt a double blow with Thomas Vermaelen forced off after 35 minutes – meaning Sol Campbell came on for his first appearance in a Gunners shirt in the top-flight since May 2006 – and then Eduardo hobbled off in the second-period, also with a muscle injury.

But despite the changes it was Arsenal who continued to press only for Villa to show why they have the joint best defensive record in the Premier League with three crucial blocks on goalbound efforts by the impressive Collins.

Arshavin did carve out a shooting chance in stoppage time but his curling effort was safely held by Friedel and Wenger continues to wait in his quest to become the second manager to reach 300 Premier League wins after Sir Alex Ferguson.

Vermaelen has a fractured leg and is out for the season.

    Typical.

Should have got a striker and smalling! Thankfully we got Sol.

yes but now sol is going to have to play a big part rather than being a back up and nobody knows if he has the fitness to cope.

i don’t normally say this kind of thing because i have faith in the players we have but if we’re going to win the league we need at least a top centre back to play for the rest of the season.

Sol can be used with specific matchups (like against Heskey today), but if he ever gets in a mix up with Gallas and has to defend Rooney in a 1 on 1, we’re screwed.

Even with Bendtner looking very rusty, just the option of having someone to win long balls really gives us a better chance of getting into the final third with space.

Nasri also looked good in the limited action he had after coming back from his injury.

WENGER IS STILL BY FAR THE WISEST COACH IN THE LEAGUE. he knew sooner than later one of our defenders would get injured, so he sold senderos and brought in a player approaching 40.we are now left with, sylvester, gallas( who by the, is just waiting to get injured )and campbell.

And after watching today’s game. i totally agree with him that we dont need any striker, bendtner and eduardo would do just fine.

And for those who say manure werent going to win anything this season, well, they are in the carling cup final again. (OFFCOURSE WE DONT NEED THE CARLING CUP ), and despite having the best defenders in the league they still beat us to smalling, well i guess he’s too english to be arsenal, afterall we are a french club.

Boozy- Get a life you sad miserable person. That wasn’t a bad result lt me just remind that Aston Villa have beaten Manure, Chelsea and Liverpool they are a good team. We were close to nicking all 3 points. Sol looked good we rather have him than Senderos.

Over reliance on the same set of players without sufficient dept and backup will always make you second best! I had hopes this season, but with injury to our best defender and no replacement in place, ……….hmmmmm.
Sol did fairly yesterday but he is not in any class to match Rooney. Lets keep our fingers crossed and see what wenger will put in place against man u on sunday.
By the way, the fixture on the site suggest Arsenal is playing away, please who is the spurs supporter in our midst? That should be corrected immediately.

Well Wenger’s reluctance to spend money is straining our squad at the moment the gallas and Vermaelen partnership was just waiting to explode and now we have Sol to cope with the 3 most important games of our season so far.

Despite having the best goal scoring record we dont have a fully fit striker and Wenger refuses to buy a one relying instead on Eduardo(Injured), Wallcott (Coming back from injury), Nicky B (coming back from injury)and Vela (Pretty damn useless)

He’s a confusing manager to say the least

yes nasri looked good. and its good that we have someone to win long balls but i don’t know why we keep playing the long ball. almunia refuses to play it short even though we rarely win it in the air. even with bendtner winning headers the other players around him never win the second ball because they don’t know where a striker in that position might head it. lets play to our strengths and keep it on the floor.

now that eduardo and vermaelen are injured it doesn’t seem like a good decision not to strengthen our squad. nothing we can do about it now though.

So Wenger has to turn into Mystic Meg in order to predict which of his players will be injured next. Some of the comments from Boozy, Jaguar, Ehibaba and Remi are just ludicrous. They are obviously gifted with 20/20 hindsight. Unfortunately, the rest of the human race, Wenger included, are not so lucky as to have this precious gift.

How ironic,AW refuses to make a sensible offer for Smalling manure snatch him and the verminator gets a serious injury.

Gallas has been struggling with injury and if ends up on the treatment table we’ll be short on CBs.

Our reluctance to buy may cost us again this season.I can understand AW not buying a forward because January is always difficult, but Smalling should have been an Arsenal player.

Roll on Sunday we’ll beat manure draw against chelsea and beat liverpool, all is not lost.

Funny i predicted that RVP would get injured on duty with Holland but why you ask……..BECAUSE IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME!!!!!!

This injury crap isnt new it’s the same thing for the last 4-5 seasons.

Wenger decided not to replace players he sold and rely on the ones coming back from injury then he says “their body has been out of action for 20 or so many months they will pick up injuries” so yes he should know. He should also know that playing gallas and vermaelen constantly will eventually end up with one of them getting injured.

He is the one who chooses not to buy or to even get someone on loan

player most missed last night was song followed closely by diaby. funny to say that but they have really filled that midfield and seemed to be the missing link last night. ramsay was not impressive last evening.
