Tommy Gunner a crock as we drop points at Villa

Thomas-vermaelen-3
by CARL ELDRIDGE We needed Lady Luck to smile on us last night at Villa Park but all we got was a grimace from the old bird. Woodwork cost us the three points in the end and we lost Tommy V and Eduardo to boot. Then we had to put up with the charmless goblin that is Martin O’Neill talking hogwash and doing his best with inanimate facial expressions to prove he is in fact a waxwork dummy.

Anyway on to a delve into this morning’s papers for their take on proceedings and the Daily Mail tells us that Vermaelen suffered a suspected broken leg as a ‘furious war of words between AW and O’Neill soured an engrossing game.

The paper says TV5 will go to hospital this morning with AW fearing he has cracked his fibula. And no sooner had AW confirmed the probable prognosis is either a broken leg or damaged nerve than, claims the Mail, a slanging match broke out between himself and O’Neill.

Wenger said: ‘It was a very difficult game because they stopped us playing when we had the ball. They played a very long-ball game. So we couldn’t find our passing game. You know when you come here what you get and we were not disappointed.

‘We got a very English game, very physical, counter-attacking with their fast forwards. They want the ball and they are quick. That’s why it was always us creating chances and then them trying to get Agbonlahor or Heskey away with a long ball.’

The paper adds that ‘O’Neill did not take kindly to the perceived slur and hit back with a barb of his own as the heat rose after the final whistle’.  He said: ‘If that’s what he saw tonight, that’s as ridiculous a statement as I’ve heard. He’s made a few ridiculous statements in his time here and that’s probably as good as any.”

Maybe he is coming round to the idea that despite being in the final of the Carling Cup he is in fact not in charge of a ‘big’ club as the rows of empty seats proved last night along with our chant of ‘Your ground’s too big for you.’

The Sun reminds us that Eduardo tweaked a hamstring badly enough to rule him out of the United clash – and maybe games against leaders Chelsea and Liverpool in the following 10 days.

AW added: “Vermaelen is on crutches. We do not know if it is a nerve or the bone but we should find out in the morning.”

The redtop adds that we stretched their unbeaten run to 10 games but they still dropped to third in the table, two points behind Chelsea – who have a game in hand – and one adrift of the Mancs.

He added: “We are on a very strong run and it maintains the positive vibes.  But any game you have to win at the moment, compared to Chelsea. They won and so we have dropped two points.”

O’Neill has another bleat in the Mirror, saying: “Anyone who saw the game won’t take that viewpoint. Ashley Young didn’t have the time to do long ball when he was taking their left-back to the cleaners. It is an appalling insult.”

The paper says Young was the Man of the Match, creating two gilt-edged opportunities either side of half time which were both missed by Stewart Downing.

So the Mancs at home on Sunday and with Shrek in reasonable form, it has to be said, Sol Campbell will certainly have his work cut out in the absence of Tommy V. Come on you rip-roaring Reds.

Are the medical staff underpaid because they have been bloody useless so far this season?

Aston Villa showed the mettle that some Arsenal players lack. A scenario with Clichy knocked off the ball and sits on the touchline whilst the Aston Villa player invades our penalty area! Another scenario, an Aston Villa forward chases after the ball from one side of the field to the other in the Arsenal half!!! It is this English trait that is lacking in the Arsenal players, the mettle to chase a lost cause. Aston Villa are a very good side. Eldo, I would take Martin O’Neill for an Arsenal manager any day of the week. After AW retires in 2012?

    Well Not over the hill..

I guess Sol Campbell owning Emile Heskey to the point that he made a fool of himself wasn’t enough for you?

Or Fabregas, Rosicky, and Ramsey one-twoing there way through the Aston Villa midfield having Milner and Petrov looking like they saw a short pass for the first time.

The only one lacking in the department you describe is Denilson who was terrible in all aspects of the game yesterday

Its obvious that we need a striker, it will take bentnder 5-6 games to get going, dudu is out now for a week or 2 and he has be dire the past few weeks, he looks so average lately! And dont get me started on arsehavin, looks to me his mind is elsewere (barca)! Wenget get your act together and get a striker on loan even till the end of season, if not then we can kiss the premierleague bye bye! :(

No it,s not Denilson who is the problem rather Ramsey who runs around like a blue assed fly getting in the way of his fellow players. That shot from Cesc that rebounded off the Villa goalpost had goal written all over it until Ramsey got in Rosicky,s way with Rosicky coming onto the ball frontways and not from the opposite direction, please.

Two more down, seven on the operating table, three nowhere near match fit… This could just be the act that saves our season. Forces the hand of the only man stopping us from buying reinforcements. Mercenaries? For certain! But only to hold this band of motley young guns together and still give them something to fight for when they heal in the broken places. Wenger, don’t be a fool!

We have only 3 x half fit CBs (Gallas/Sol/Silvestre) & either an inconsistent GK or out-of-match practice backup GK b/w the post .. vs Man United, Chelsea and Liverpool next. Not good odds.

Would Bendtner be leading the line after Eduardo is out of the United game? Could Sol handle three big matches consecutively? Could the body/legs of key players Gallas/Rosicky/Fabregas/Arshavin/Nasri suffer further abuse and worse while playing tactical matches against those 3 teams?
Would Walcott/Vela/Ramsey rise to the occasions?

Eboue & Song coming back from ACN is a welcoming sight.

ramsay disappointed. song was missed. denilson was poor. the second half was a much more dangerous AFC. and looked the much more likely to get a late winner. mon was bleating about foul on dunne on the break and the general feeling of hard done by, by the ref. i thought ref got it right in second half and let them get away with very physical play in first half so all a wash. didn’t understand his early attempts at blowing up “touch” fouls when an obvious advantage. that really cheeses me off, and then gets pedantic about the spot for the free kick. thanks for the advantage of a free kick! not.
we were the better side and mon knows it.
