Three points, just 33 to go: Homage to Arsenal’s Crystal Maze

fabregasjpg
By JAMES CURTIS The winter freeze is catching up it seems, to the point where my Sunday side are now expected to play back-to-back games each week. It’s nothing new for the Essex Combinations League, although I doubt anybody has ever come across the term “12-pointer” before. So my apologies for the late post, it would seem, on this day of apologies and redressing, as we pay homage to Manuel Almunia and Emmanuel Eboue.

Eoin Morgan hooked Umar Gul for six on Friday, to win the Twenty20 match for England against Pakistan. Morgan had made light work of the worlds best 20 over bowler, but after the game he said that one bad performance doesn’t make Gul bad with the ball. The same can be said of Almunia because one good performance still doesn’t change my mind about him. I doubt it does yours.

On they day though, Almunia pulled off a vital save from Darren Bent late on. He did the same against Everton a few weeks back. While I doubt Almunia will be remembered for these two fine saves, what he has done with his block against Sunderland is save the blushes of Arsenal’s defence. It was route one stuff from Steve Bruce’s side and clumsy of the central partnering of Thomas Vermaelen and Mickael Silvestre to allow Bent to squeeze in between them.

Eboue, Eboue, Eboue! The most energetic hare on the luminous green turf yesterday, dashing around like a freed injured animal. Either he was merely enjoying a rare start in the side as much as he could, or he was serious about Arsenal winning the Premiership. The rest of the team were trying to attack, but none were as urgent as Eboue. It was one of the most creditable performances this season and an example to everybody of the energy levels needed for the remainder of the course.

Arsenal were clearly in control of the match yesterday. The passing was more crisp that it has been in recent weeks, overlaps were encouraged and the mentality was positive off the back of a European defeat in the Estadio do Dragao. So why was I still looking to my friend with that all to knowing strained face, the one that says this will end in tragedy?

Arsenal got the deserved win, but why did the fans have to go through that agonising moment of dread, when two bodies collide on the edge of the box and the referee extends an arm in the direction of your teams goal? The wild American writer Hunter S. Thompson once requested his ashes to be blasted into the Colorado sky, to drift slowly back over the crowd at his funeral. When Sunderland were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box late on, I was preparing for the same dark feeling of obliteration.

Thankfully the wall did it’s job and Cesc Fabregas bolted the final nail in Sunderland’s coffin by slotting home from the penalty spot. The Black Cats had been extremely piteous and wretched as guests to the Emirates, so I loathe the fact more that Arsenal had to feel pressure when it should really have been a day at the beach.

Having said that, Arsenal are constantly under their own pressure to bounce back from defeats, and once again came away jovial after what was certainly a must win match. If the Premiership was a game of Crystal Maze, Arsenal would be the contestant always scrabbling around in the muddy, watery pit for a key, or fumbling with a lock as the seconds tick away and team-mates scream “GET OUT, GET OUT”.

Somehow Arsenal are still collecting crystals and adding more time to their Premier League title chase. The fact that Chelsea win most of the time and rarely put themselves under the sort of pressure Arsenal do makes them a better team, that is their specialty. It might be to rich to call it their own speciality, but Arsenal can overwhelm with the amount of times they win after a disappointing loss before.

Each night, the Sky control in my living room is down to it’s last drop of battery juice, but every morning it rises to new life. Just like Arsenal I guess, a jittery squad of never say die. Perhaps Arsenal’s fate will dry out like the channel changer is sure to – still, you can’t fault their efforts to stay in the conversation. Here I pay homage to the nervous Crystal Maze playing, life-squeezing remote control that is AFC. There isn’t much else to say really, except: “Will you start the fans, please!”{jcomments on}

Eboue, Eboue, Eboue! Would he ever replace that forever promising player name Walcott?

haha eboue will not replace walcott. i thought theo was much better for getting involved in the game more than usual, and looked dangerous when he was off of it rather than on it – long balls. but in the end, what did he have to show for it. not much !!

That was a much needed win after a difficult week, Lets hope the team kick-on and finish in top spot, that will certainly put the cat in and amongst the pigeons. C’mon you Gunners

Lets all get behind all the players, that includes Theo, Almunia, Fabianski and Denilson.

Lets face it Wenger has proved us all wrong time and time again.

We booded Song, Diaby, Eboue and even Gallas at some point in the last two years.

All these players have come back to be fans favourites now..

I think we need to be positive like some of our players.

I think our fixtures show we can win the league, lets just see.

Totally agree, Walcott will only get better this season with more games.

The boy will be class, all should just let him play.

its all anybody really needs in this arsenal team. i hate how diaby is injured again, how bendtner comes back but doesnt have a partner and how arshavin in out when he would likely have scored yesterday against a really slow sunderland defence.

i watch villa today and see the same 11 out week after week after week. do young, milner, agbonlahor or petrov ever get injured? collins has blood pouring down his head and slugs on. didnt nasri feel a bit dizzy last week and get subed?

stoke, burnley, hull, west ham, birmingham and wolves are our next games before spurs away.

chelsea have to play man city next, ans still villa (both home) but united, spurs and liverpool (all away). surely some points dropped and man utd are already in sight … they have liverpool and spurs, also man city away.

i can see spurs helping us to this title, how rich that would be

it was a good win after another crap midweek. it is astonishing how many times arsenal HAVE to come bounce back. of course it’s always their fault for losing in the first place, but wenger is right when he says the team have character, spirit and all that. i think i would have given up by now if i was an arsenal player. they are still in the league, and if they are to get through in the champs league, well there is yet another turn-around !!

agreed, its either we have the weakest team in history or our medical team wrap everyone in cotton wool everytime theres a niggle. I dont know how many times a player finishes the game and you think ‘beauty we had a win, and no injuries’, then you read midweek that this person is out for two with a hang nail, and this person is out for two with a headache. Yeh we get unlucky with people like gibbs and rvp, but diaby, eduardo, rosicky and a few others are constantly getting injured. everyone says its an ‘injury curse’, i just think our players need to toughen up and show a bit of back bone.

As you said villa are always up for it. Its so very frustrating when we get on a roll and are contenders, then someone gets a niggle and cant play. They should look at the likes of the verminator and fabregas. They have a heart and some testicular fortitude!

Jimmy, you make the point about Chelsea always winning etc. did you see the game against wolves? It wasn’t much different to ours. They won 2-0 but were hanging on more than us. Their keeper had a great game and kept them in it.

yes it was similar, but i dont think chelsea put themselves under the same pressure as we do. they are more than likely to win in europe and come back to the prem with less pressure.

arsenal had won only won once in 6 games (i think) before the sunderland game, and WE labelled it a must win. this added pressure to what was quite an simple three points really.

cech did make two quality saves tho. but how annoying was drogba’s clincher? when do we ever score a cheap route 1 goal?
