Is Theo Gunner come good?

theo-walcott-415x275
by CARL ELDRIDGE The spotlight falls on Theo Walcott this morning after his fair-to-middling display in the Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Sunderland at the Emirates on Saturday. And the papers carry quotes from Walcott and Arsene Wenger as the assessment of his abilities and potential continues. The Daily Mirror says AW has absolutely no doubt that Walcott will make Capello’s final 23 for South Africa and believes the signs are good that he is returning to form and full fitness.

AW said: “It’s terrible pressure, but that’s the modern media. When I played, there was no television, no cameras were on Capello and yet everything is analysed on Match of the Day and then people will try to get Capello to analyse it. The World Cup is not today, it’s in July. I think he will make the squad, yes.
“The problem is that everyone has the England national team in their mind and because you want to bring the World Cup back to London you want everybody to be on top today. They will be on top in the long run but when players have been out for a while it takes a while to get back to your best with confidence, sharpness and the zip. That will come back with Theo.

“He is getting there. He gets harsh treatment on the pitch, but we see signs in training, we get a response, and now even when opponents kick him he responds very well. It’s part of the learning process. I’ve said many times that players get there when they are 22 or 23 and yet Theo is still 20.”

Theo tells the Telegraph: “I’m starting to get there now, it’s just getting that final ball sorted,” acknowledged Walcott. “This season has been the most frustrating in my career so far — just on, off, on, off. I don’t think people realise that you can’t be at your best just like that. In a couple of games’ time I think I’ll be up to full fitness and hopefully I can show people I’m back.”

The paper says that Walcott even admitted that he had lost count of the times he had returned this season only to be struck by a new injury but, if he can now put together a sequence of matches, his freshness could be imperative both to Arsenal and England. “I feel fit as anything I’ve felt — and I do feel fresh,” he said. “I’m still developing — I’m not 21 yet and Thierry Henry didn’t really come through until he was 23.”

The Sun says Walcott will have a clearer picture of where he figures in England boss Fabio Capello’s World Cup warm-up plans today. England Under-21 chief Stuart Pearce names his squad for their match next Wednesday against Greece.

Walcott has not figured for Capello’s senior team this season – due to injuries to his shoulder, knee and hamstring and has been restricted to just five Premier League starts this term. But the paper says that Capello was at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday to watch Walcott perform well for the Gunners. And the Italian may decide Walcott is ready to be thrown back into his senior squad for the friendly against Egypt the same night instead.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail says AW is set to be linked with the Real Madrid job again. The paper says Jose Mourinho went out of his way to play down the reports linking him to Real Madrid in the week, with the Inter manager preparing for his Champions League tie against Chelsea.

Nevertheless, says the paper, the circus surrounding the Real job is sure to start up in earnest should the Spanish team fail to overturn the 1-0 defeat inflicted on them by Lyon, meaning AW is sure to be touted once again. Current coach Manuel Pellegrini was the second choice of Real president Florentino Perez last summer, after Wenger. The Frenchman went further than ever before in listening to Real’s offer then, but Arsenal are confident he will sign another deal to stay with them next year, says the Mail.
A bigger load of you know what I have never read…AW is Arsenal for life!

We could really use a fit and confident Theo back in our ranks. He really does have pace to burn and having that as a viable threat week in and week out offers a new dimesion to our attack. This season we have not seen the ball over the top much as we haven’t had the pace up front to exploit the space behind the oppos’ defence. With Theo in the side, we can use that to combat opponents pressing high up on the pitch.

His final ball has always been so so, but he carries a scoring threat and his ace, pace and more pace is really a useful weapon.

…a run of games, bit of confidence and avoiding injury and we’ll get the player we know he has in him…

It’s Monday and so far Arsenal haven’t been linked with any new strikers amazing!

What manager in his right mind would even contemplate taking the job at Real Madrid, the only club where the managers office has a revolving door. Well actually there is one Mourinho!

Some dodgy refereeing over the weekend saw several players stay on the pitch when they should have gone off, Defoe for a wild and spiteful lunge, Rodwell the Everton prospect for two bookable offences but only booked for removing his shirt and not for jumping into the crowd after scoring. Finally Cana should have gone for a whole series of fouls but was only booked. Oh! one more Mascherano, don’t know how he stayed on.

All we ever want from referees is consistency.

the only problem with giving him a run of games is that we have better players right now and we should be thinking about what is good for arsenal right now and not what is good for theo or england. personally i can’t see him in the team ahead of any of nasri arshavin eboue rosicky.

Of course i want theo to do well and at some point he willl need a run of games to get confidence and some form. the question is whether letting him get that this season will hamper arsenal with better players sitting on the bench.

    db10,

Walcott certainly needs a run in the starting eleven and it would be best for Arsenal if he could get it. I think he deserves the chance for the way he has fought through a whole series of injuries and setbacks.

It’s clear that going out on loan isn’t the answer, look at poor Jack Wilshire I think he has played less than ten minutes since going to Bolton and was on the bench throughout yesterday’s three nil thrashing by Blackburn.

Is sitting on the bench during a relegation dog-fight going to do anything for our future star? I don’t think so.

agree that going on loan would be bad. and wilshere’s loan is a disgrace.

however i don’t agree that his is owed a run of games because he has been injured. You could say that about most of our team.

Of course it would be good for arsenal if he were on form but in the short term if we were picking the best team for every match, which we should be doing if we are going to win anything, then i don’t think theo is better than the other players mentioned.

my point is that the manager should do the best thing for arsenal and in my opinion that would include playing nasri and arshavin either side of bendtner right now. And if arshavin isn’t ready for stoke then Rosicky would be next in line. Just my opinion.

JIN, what get’s on my wick more are the refs who do the opposite, give out cards for nothing. There were plenty of those too, mostly for Wigan.

Got to say, I loved Clarke Carlilse’s tackle on Ashley Young

my problem with walcott isnt really the final ball. if he gets in positions enough he will sort that out. ive seen enough of him to say he can finish (croatia) and that he can assist (solo run against liverpool).

i think his biggest problem is understanding the game. most of the time he looks lost and just drifts around without a purpose. on saturday it was better, but this for me is the part of his game that we are waiting to develop, like wenger says when he is 22 or 23 …

for now keep him off the ball mostly making runs onto long balls. then get usain bolt to play in midfield to catch up with him in support.

Hey guys, just so you know I am a Manchester United fan and I am truly angry at our defeat to Everton. Anyways I think your Arsenal can win it this season. You have something that no other team has, ……….. I can think of anything!!! You guys are gonna fail and horribly. WAYNE ROONEY!!!!! He is a real hero. XD Theo Walcott needs to get his head out of his ass and start dribbling. Stoke is going to kill you guys, Rory Delap, remember him. Your defense is woeful.. at best.

Hahah Frank, Youre second top goalscorer is “Own Goals” so when Rooney aint on form e.g Everton, youre team is shit, especially now youre only other half decent player, Giggs, is also injured. Youre a one man team and you cant rely on that for the rest of the season

Theo really needs to improve vastly his dribbling skills instead of just running straight into opponents with the ball.
He needs to forget about Ferraris and playstations and practise 2 to 3 hours 5 days a week with a skill coach for next few months!

Well guys I did that just to see what you thought about Manchester United. I’m an Arsenal fan. :D . Anyway, hopefully some of our players learn something from Eboue and go at defenders. Fabregas is gonna get back to form. We have a good chance of winning, :D .
