That Was Sunderland Next Up The Potters

arsenal-v-stoke-city

Three points but not a really commanding performance on Saturday. Our defensive and goalkeeping frailities were revealed yet again. Fortunately it didn’t cost us, principally due to the Mackems’ poor finishing, particularly from Kenwynne Jones who missed an easy chance when left clean through in the first half.

Manuel Almunia, preferred over Lukasz Fabiański and Vito Mannone, went on one of his inexplicable walkabouts during the game. Again, Sunderland were unable to exploit it.

Clear Arsenal man of the match for me was Alex Song who really is developing very well as a holding midfield player. If he keeps on progressing as he has he could be our Claude Makélélé. The only holding midfield player better than Song in the Premier League at the moment is Javier Mascherano at Liverpool. El Jefecito (the little chief) is the best holding midfield player in the world at the moment for my money. Oh how I wished we’d signed him from River Plate in 2005 before he de-camped to Corinthians of São Paulo and hence to a bizarre interlude at the Boleyn Ground where he couldn’t get in the ‘Appy ‘Ammers first team before going to Anfield. Not good enough for West Ham United yet good enough to help take Liverpool all the way to the Champions League Final in Athens. Stranger than fiction.

As we enter the closing stretch of the season Song is currently my Arsenal player of the season. He’s consistent and has substantially improved the accuracy and range of his passing. Cesc Fàbregas has been spectacular at times but Song has been the glue that keeps the team together.

Next on the horizon is a visit to the Potteries to play Stoke City, authors of our exit from this season’s FA Cup. Results at Goodison Park and Eastlands went for us over the weekend. Unfortunately neither Wigan Athletic nor Wolves could do the job for us against the Spuds or Chavski. Spurs are now nine points behind us in fourth, Citeh a point behind them in fifth but with a game in hand. Unless we self-destruct we’re currently on course for a minimum third place finish. We need to keep up the pressure with three points against Stoke next Saturday. The Britannia Stadium is not a place we like to go with their long-throw Blitzkrieg. We can but hope that this is being addressed during the week at Shenley. We need to go into the game with our tin hats on fully prepared to go to war if necessary. If we don’t prepare for the long throws and display the same lack of organisation and concentration we’ve seen in Oporto and the Grove in the last two games it’ll cost us.

Still, let’s look on the bright side. We got a result on Saturday. Let’s try and construct a run in the two competitions we’re still in. We’re almost certainly not good enough or organised enough to win either but let’s give it our best shot, both on the park and in the stands.

Keep the faith!

It’s a bit difficult for anyone to “give it our best shot on the park and in the stands” when you’ve just about slaughtered the team. Either one or the other mate.

Eboue had to be man of the match.

Manny made some good saves in goal. Defensive errors were made, but not as bad as usual in my opinion – the keeper is allowed to have to make some saves (see Cech against Wolves)

strange post today, almunia played ok, did what had to be done, sorry but mascherano isint better than song nevermind the best in the world, all he does is annoy other players he cant pass or shoot and is constantly moaning to referees about this and that,he hacks sombody down them starts on the ref for giving a free,i think that you are one of these doom and gloom arsenal fans if you think mascherano is better than song and you think we are not good enough to win anything,11 games to go 6 points behind and you still dont believe, why dont you stop writing shit and forget about arsenal,if you dont think were good enough to win somthing this year dont watch the games, come back in august then saying we wont win anything, pathetic attitude from arsenalinsider today really pathetic

Irish gooner, you are absolutely right.Mascherano is useless. He goes and tackles someone and acts as if they injured him.Song is miles ahead of him.
To be fair, almunia played well.Made a vital save against Bent.
Hope we get Diaby back for the stoke match.

I reckon we’ll smash the Potters, we definitely owe then one, hopefully we’ll have Sol back that game. I wonder if the lads are practicing defending the long throw-ins.

How can we practice long throw ins if we have no one in our team capable of doing a long throw!!

It the same problem as the wingers – no one in our team is able to run at full steam (with the ball under control) at defenders. hence we have a problem against nani, ronaldo, rooney, drogba etc etc (thankfully the pool dont have anyone as good either!)

Like many others I’m at a lost to know when Almunia went ‘walkabout’ maybe it was when you left 10 minutes early in the first half for your walkabout for your half time beer and burger? Don’t get me wrong Almunia ain’t great but criticism of him when he done nothing wrong is a insult. Song was fantastic as always and is better than Mascherano. The only thing Mascherano is better is picking up yellows/red cards. Eboue was our starman saturday but I suspect your one of the fans who love to abuse our players and can’t give praise to one of your boo boys

I was at the game and almunia did come running out and made a hash of a clearance kicking it straight at one of our own players in 1st half. not sure how nobody seems to remember that. Also people saying he played well? He really had almost nothing to do. We dominated apart from a couple of silly errors. And the media reported walcott played well. He was the player who frustrated the fans the most on the day. He gave away the ball repeatedly and wasted so many chances with horribly poor end product.
Best players on the day were song, nasri and eboue. nasri stood out as exceptionally skilful and quick. i personally think he can develop into one of the worlds best.
I still think we can win the league but it doesn’t deny the fact we need new players.
Anyone looking for a load of horse shit to read go over the myles palmer’s arsenal news review. that guy knows how to spout it. I’d go so far as to call him offensive to the club and our fans

    Vic,

Love your posts…agree with some of the things you said in this one! Mash is up there as one of the top CDM in the world, Song aint that far behind him! What a turn around from the young guy and i saw an interview on the arsenal dvd review that he was an arsenal fan from a very young age! Great to hear!

With regards to not winning the league, I agree we aint got the best squad due to injuries, but i defo think we have a great shot, due to how poor manu are this year and how old chelsea have got! With some luck we might just do it! We got t believe!

Another thing, Walcott should quit football and become a runner! He aint gonna make it, he cant run with the ball to save his life! He is a runner and thats it! By now surely he could have learnt to dribble with the ball at speed and have a few tricks!

Like come on its his job, if i worked at dribbling the ball day in day out i would be amazing. Either he isnt thought how to dribble with it and DROP THE SHOULDER or he has been thought it but cant do it when running, then its time to cut him loose!

the mackems are done & dusted-what concerns me is the harry potters on saturday-WE HAVE TO STAND UP & BE COUNTED or they are going to batter us again!i’m hoping our coach/coaches have a few ideas as how to deal with stokes one & only game plan-which is “rory delap”because last time was embarrasing.i would advise sticking bendtner in front of delaps throw every time-means he has to lob it in instead of an excocet-secondly have 2/3 players constantly giving the ref earache over their time wasting in cleaning the ball-at least 30 secs every time-that ought to helpp-& get stuck in!!

Alex Song is far and away the best defensive midfielder in the Premiership and Arsenal defensively was sound for a change even though Jones missed a sitter for Sunderland,no Sagna and Gallas or Campbell to confuse Almunia with their ball watching abilities .

Are Sagna ,Gallas ,Clichy and Campbell aware of Delap,s long ball capabilities from throw ins and what will they do to prevent these long balls from getting into the Arsenal box?

Walcott can,t trap the ball first time ,can,t run with it keeping close control Nasri or Rosicky style ,can,t shoot or header move him on already.

Mascherano is limited. He is purely a holding player. Song has much more to his game. I think Lass Diarra is better than Mascherano.
