Arsenal Go Top With 10 Men – Match Report

Thomas-vermaelen-3

Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win over West Ham despite playing half the match at the Emirates with 10 men.

Denilson opened the scoring early on for the Gunners, but they then had Thomas Vermaelen sent off just before half-time. Manuel Almunia saved Alessandro Diamanti’s penalty, garnered from the foul that saw Vermaelen walk, and Cesc Fabregas scored a spot-kick of his own late on to bag a deserved second for the home side.

The Gunners end the day one point above Manchester United and three above Chelsea, who play Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers respectively on Sunday.

Arsene Wenger’s side took the lead after five minutes through Denilson’s sixth goal of the season. The Brazilian played a one-two with Nicklas Bendtner on the edge of the box before sidefooting a clinical low finish past Robert Green.

At that point it looked as though the Gunners were going to run away with the game, as they served up several prime examples of the stylish quick passing game that has come to define them under Wenger.

Denilson had the chance to double his tally but miscued his acrobatic volley, while the returning Cesc Fabregas had a shot blocked inside the area.

Sol Campbell was perhaps fortunate to stay on the pitch after he escaped any punishment for a two-footed challenge on Diamanti, before collecting a booking for a nasty foul on Junior Stanislas that caught the young forward’s ankle.

However, for all of Arsenal’s mesmeric football, West Ham had the chance to level just before the break from the penalty spot. As Vermaelen and Guillermo Franco tussled for a long ball, the Mexican striker hit the ground and the referee’s assistant signalled that his shirt had been tugged as he entered the box. Referee Martin Atkinson immediately showed Vermaelen a red card, even though the Belgian defender had actually failed in his attempt to pull the striker back.

Nevertheless, Diamanti placed the ball on the spot, only for Manuel Almunia to save the penalty.

Despite the red card coming just before the break, Wenger did not make a substitution until the hour mark, with Alex Song slotting into defence sufficient cover for Vermaelen’s absence.

Arsenal’s numerical disadvantage counted for little against a West Ham bereft of creativity, and they continued to dominate the possession.

The introduction of Carlton Cole did eventually add some degree of potency to the Hammers attack, and the England striker hit the foot of the post with a neat shot from the edge of the box.

A second Arsenal goal was fully warranted and it arrived on 83 minutes when former Arsenal defender Matthew Upson handled from Fabregas’s chipped pass.

The Arsenal captain fired his spot-kick low down the middle for his 15th league goal of the season to ensure his team’s sixth-straight league victory.

it wasn’t a red card. I read mischief in all these. Ferguson surely have a hand in the refs goof. Soldier on Arsenal…..we surely winning the league now…even without Verminator and Gallas

It’s getting exciting now! Hopefully Liverpool and Blackburn can do us favours tomorrow. This is one of the very few times I’ll be supporting Fat Sam’s thugs. Vermaelen’s suspension will be a big blow, though.

I wonder what the English FA have against Arsenal!!! How could that have been a red card offence? It is obvious they dont want us to win the EPL, but i think that is too late now because this season belong to us. Vidic brought down agbolahor and he(vidic) wasnt even giving a yellow card even though a penalty was awarded. This double standard displayed on weekly basis by the ref is a shame and a disgrace. The FA should beware or they will certainly go the way of the Italy league. Note that before the match fixing scandal, the Italy leaque and their clubs were superb! once again, the English should watch out. This is a time bomb waiting to explode!!!!! ARSENAL FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If that shud happen where am from…that refree/linesman especially will be beaten to coma after the game…he easily wud have cost us with is blindness…wenger must go for an appeal..this is becoming too much..they shud start using lawyers in appeals and vidic’s case shud be used as a case study..that was even a final…..lazy and blind ref and linesman..he was 500kilometers away from that call….HOW CAN…so once aplayer goes down under fair challenge/chase a penalty and a red must be given..thats why yu are paid stupid ref…you shud be close before you make a crucial call..once your are not sure, you give a yellow…that makes it a fair judgment..you can give a red if and only if you are sure…its our year nomatter thier plot.against hull was a stupid penalty, now again.

Pretty sure its only a one match ban and i think we should be ok for one game.

Song did well there as he has done in the past so i would stick with hinm instead of silvestre because we have more cover in midfield.

Wenger’s hinted that Campbell needs a breather to recover. I think for Birmingham our CB partnership will be Song Silvestre. The latter does not fill me with confidence but if we’re going to win the league we will need to use all our squad. The plus side is that this will give us a very fresh pairing of Vermaelen and big Sol for the first leg against Barca.
Hopefully Gallas won’t be too far away after that. Sol has been an inspirational signing but he hasn’t got the legs to keep it up week in week out.
Come on Arsenal!! The belief is growing….

Heard the news that RvP is back in training this week and is very sharp?! Wenger’s said it’ll be a month before we’ll see him but what a bonus to have for the final run-in…. and maybe champs league final?

Also Ramsey’s been to the training ground to see the squad… walking without crutches!

Positivity is flowing through the camp. Just need wild bill back…..

i read that about rambo and i can’t believe how quickly he is walking without crutches. truly amazing how fast his body has recovered.

strange that for the first time in a while we don’t seem to have a youngster who would be able to come in and do an okay job for one or two matches.

Shame. Still feel we have the squad to do something this year. (An amazing double…?!) Will be watching the games tomorrow with a big interest! The pressure’s on the chavs and mancs to produce now.

Wenger has done an amazing job of rallying the troops. The pressure just isn’t on us for both of the trophies. Everyone is expecting barca to turn us over (…that’s everyone not in the arsenal camp!) and Wenger constantly tells the squad that we are above expectation already in the league- removing the pressure and allowing the players to express themselves. A Wenger master stroke! The players are starting to believe!!!

Song was brilliant, one of the best dm this season. Eboue was great too but he should not try to get free kick whenever there is a slightest brush.

I don’t understand how that can be a red card it is just crazy and the last game against Hull another crazy penalty.

Why is wenger not using Walcott?Walcott looked in brilliant form in the hull city match and I was expecting him to start alongside bendt and arshavin.
We need to use either eboue or Walcott in the right wing not Nasri. We need their pace so that fabregas can easily release them instead he himself taking the ball to the Box.
Nasri should be played in the central alongside cesc if not put him on the bench. When sagna came him in nasri ,eboue was pushed forward and we looked like different team with eboue’s pace.

I hope Gallas isnt up to the same trick he done at Chelsky. He said if he hade to play for them whilst he was still thear, he would score own goles if they didnt sell him.
Its strange a ingery that should clear up in 2/3 weeks has gone on for so long.
If he is a profesional he should play the next game & honer his contract to the end of the season, not use this injery as a bargening tool

the reason he was unhappy at chelsea was because he was playing at left back and this was the reason why he wanted to leave.

also i doubt any player would be able to fool the doctors and physios into thinking they were still injured when there are scans and other symptoms of any injury that he won’t be able to fake. And why would he want to? He is in with the chance of winning two major competitions. And if he wants to leave at the end of the season he is free to do so because he is out of contract.

Is it only me, or was the mancs’ penalty against Liverpool a gift from the referee? This combined with the Vermalen incedent feels a bit like conspiracy :-*
