Arsenal’s House of Flying Daggers and the Curious Case of the Missing Whopper Meal

stadiumdecoration
by JAMES CURTIS News is filtering out today, that the Premiership Managers Association has finished collecting funds for the giant gold plate they are planning to buy Alex Ferguson. Arsene Wenger was the only one not to chip in for the 24 carat gold platter-size plate which people say will be decorated with bits of diamond encrusted unicorn horn. It is supposed to be the plate they hand wino Fergie his Premier League title on, helped by a dismal Liverpool today, but not if Arsenal have anything to say.

It’s annoying the way Liverpool rolled over and asked for their tummys to be tickled by Manchester United. I wont rabble on to much, but why Rafa Benitez persists in leaving Yossi Benayoun on the bench with useless players like Lucas and Maxi Rodriguez guaranteed to start is beyond me. Not only do they look like burn victims but their creativity is at the level of some crappy one-hit teen-pop sensation. Let’s hope Bolton put up more of a fight.

The point though, is not to get frustrated. There is plenty of time for the others to drop points. It can be nervy seeing the chasing pack pass the 30 games mark but Arsenal are the team now pushing hardest. Like Liverpool, West Ham didn’t offer much even with the extra man and Arsenal ran out comfortable winners while displaying quality pass and move football. I guess I expected more from Liverpool playing their biggest adversaries than a team pitted against relegation, that’s all.

Perhaps West Ham looked every part their position in the league equates for. Still, what I love about Arsenal this season is their marathon-man attitude to slug through tough situations. Right now, every game it seems throws up a new testing challenge, like something from a wuxia style martial arts film where the hero faces massive plights to come out victorious. Ashburton Grove, the Emirates or the House of Flying Daggers?

Yesterday the ordeal was overcoming the ridiculous decision to send off Thomas Vermaelen. Franco would have needed a ladder and a mop to reach the bouncing ball which was never once under his control. The outstanding Manuel Almunia who has never once been rubbished by the Arsenal fans saved the resulting penalty, the confidence of the Arsenal players grew and the euphoria in the Emirates could be heard down Seven Sisters.

This is what happens when a team manage to answer every trial thrown at them. The belief grows that anything is possible and points can be won under the thorniest of circumstances. These are the stories of championship winning sides. Stoke, Hull and Liverpool away have been some of the gruelling chapters on the road, and at home, West Ham was the latest chapter to follow Everton, Aston Villa and Bolton.

Yesterday was one of those games where I couldn’t really remember exactly what had happened for being caught up in the rhapsody of the buzzing home fans. I’m sure the kid next to me was watching his first Arsenal game. By the look in his eyes he was a little shocked at the noise coming from my mouth and the hole it burned in the air, but when his dad looked away I could see fleeting glances of joy and a wry smile.

The atmosphere at the Emirates is recognisable at the moment. People know there is a change happening to end this baron spell of trophies. Something is definitely stirring and it’s the closest I’ll probably get to understanding what the hippie movement of the 1960s was like. It feels that big anyway and has certainly been a reason for sliding the noise volume up a decibel.

Sure, we will need some help from the teams Chelsea and United play. Earlier, Blackburn showed exactly what is required to upend the big boys. It was classic Prem; heads clashing to win crosses, three or four bodies slamming together to meet the ball first, shirt pulling and one quality fan who could be heard singing “CHELSEA RENT BOY CHELSEA RENT BOY”!

The Emirates has that touch of hostility to it at the moment and it’s working. In my own game today at Becton Pyramids, the players had to flee when a wild horse came charging onto the field. Quite strange. Now nobody is expecting horses at the Emirates, but if each player can become such an obstacle like they were yesterday then I’m confident the remaining games against Wolves, Man City and Fulham will be won.

The away games are a different question. There is one little fixture which could prove tricky but might also be the real clinching moment in this season. That will come around soon enough, so until then I have another question: Does anybody know what I ate on the way home last night? I vaguely remember getting chunky chicken, but have a feeling I also nabbed a whopper meal based on the empty bottle of Tropicana next to me when woke up. Oh how I needed Fergie’s golden plate last night! THE ARSENAL {jcomments on}

Benitez is a tosser! All the liverpool fans I know want the fat waiter out.

On the TV5 1 game suspension, the only consolation is he’ll get a well earned rest and in Song we have a more than adequate replacement, not sure about his sidekick though against the blue scum of brum with Campbell likely being rested hopefully Silvestre will prove me wrong.

i’m pleased it’s only one game suspension. to be honest i’m not sure why red cards like that have to have a lasting effect. surely the punishment of getting a red card in the game is enough???

rafa is gutless. 18 mil or whatever it was for aquilani and he sits on the bench. anyway, im convinced united can be got at. at the moment teams cant get the ball from us and its on from here…

Aquilani on the bench but i also don’t know why benayoun doesn’t start every game. And if that wasn’t bad enough he waited until too late to bring him on. I haven’t been impressed with kuyt in the past but today he looked like one of the few liverpool players who was capable of producing something and he gets taken off. Gerrard was terrible. He hasn’t been himself this season which as an arsenal fan i’m pleased about but as an england fan its worrying. Also i know riera shouldn’t have opened his big mouth but surely he is better than maxi who has only just come to this country and needs time to settle.

I think i hate liverpool even more now than i did before.

haha classic winding yourself up there db10. liverpool are a joke mate! id take yossi for a small fee.

birmingham dnt worry me to much. their defence has run it’s course too i think. but having no verms is a small concern. i think we’d be better keeping song in the midfield. surely sol can get through another game!

Imo I think the refs are deciding the title race. Samba was the last defender when he shoved Drogba to the ground. He shd have been sent off and the blues given a penalty.Lampard was pushed to the ground by a BR defender. How a penalty was not awarded is beyond not only myself but hundreds if not billions of neutral fans.
Valaencia is tackled outside the box and a penalty is awarded to the rfc to help him win.Arsenal shd have been given at least two to three penalties in the games against Stoke and Burnley.
There are hundreds of cases of underperformance if not biased decisions every weekend.
This helps the red to win games and trophy after trophy.Fortunately he is unabale to transfer his domination in the cl where the refs are their own men.

I agree with William on the role of refs.If Mu carry on winning titile after every with the help of refs, i am going to give up watching soccer. England will be like Scotland where it’s R and C.

its starting, can you feel it??..
    as Phil Collins once said…

#something in the air tonight, ohh lord#

enough of that, must say that the lads are starting to gel and mould themselves into winners, all us true gooners know something magical is starting to happen at ‘de Grove, Le Prof has known for years that we have an amazing group of players coming through, even though we have had a bad run of injuries we STILL have come through and are chasing the title…all i gotta say is we need to all get behind this great set of lads, and cheer our socks off every game untill May…

fingers crossed, toes and arms…come May when i’m in Sri Lanka, i get the best holiday present!!! a nice shiny trophy!!

COME ON YOU RIP ROARING GUNNERS!!!

Exactly, Benayoun should be the one playing on Sunday’s match against MUnited. He could have nicked in a goal for Pool. He played well with Torres and Gerald. Very unfortunate!

i agree the SolMan is freekin rock…
wish he hadn’t buggered off seeing as he’s been playing so well, he surely would have made a difference in gelling the team when Dudu had that awful injury, i’m sure he is 10,000% better than the Manure reject!!

I wouldn’t be so quick to point fingers at Liverpool, Jimc. After all they weren’t the ones who got spanked at home by a manure side missing 3 of it’s back 4. The 3 points the scousers took off them in October could be crucial for us in the end.

the refs are so frightened of fergie. the man has been a bully for 20 years and over the course of the season it pays off. ours refs need to have more of a spine and like id care how angry fergie gets.

im sure sol will bow out at the end of the season. we need to get djourou involved and rid of silvestre. i can only judge him on the one crappy barnet friendly i saw him play, but nordveit looked like a prospect. sol’s best bet is to lift the trophy and leave the emirates for one last time on a high, and not in any sort of ‘bobby zamora raped me’ kind of way … :-)

:D yea that’s true lagooner but looking soley at the game at the weekend and nothing else, i thought it was poor from liverpool.

we can only look at ourselves for being chasers rathers than leaders at the moment but god i hope somebody puts up a fight against united, otherwise fergie will bully his way to the league. they are there for the taking.

surely the lads have been on the phone to wilshere … id love him to deflate their tires next week

Maybe it will also depend a bit on big bad bill. if he leaves wenger may consider keeping sol.

On Nordveit. He is an excellent prospect. He was described by the danish national manager as the best young defender in the world. He was playing regularly in the bundesliga for nurnberg at the start of the season in the song role but they have changed manager and now he isn’t playing as much.

We could see several new signings in this area and i think we need it.

All it needs is Rooney’s injury and Manure are finished. Same for Drogba and Chelsea. We have to do without Van the Man and are still doing great. Perhaps there is some justice in this world and we do win the league this season.
