Fear and Loathing with Howard Webb

haward-webb
by JAMES CURTIS It’s mid-way through the second half, and Lee Bowyer, the thug and unsightly reptile that he is comes careering through Theo Walcott with an intention only to wipe aside the Arsenal winger and teach him a lesson. Over comes the treacherous Howard Webb, whistle in his slimy mouth awarding the free-kick but with no purpose to claw into his pocket and produce the yellow Bowyer deserved. No, no card but just a pathetic warning. It came as a harsh confirmation that Webb was out to stop Arsenal while protecting his friends in blue.

Gael Clichy had been sentenced earlier for what was actually a limp dive on him. Alex Song had felt the wrath of dirt-bag Webb for what was nothing more than a mistimed trip. These robot referees who the FA produce on mass were once again out throwing cards at Arsenal and treating the opposition’s malignity as good old ruff-and-tumble. Webb’s stern face and proud chest was the character symbol of the official English absolutist, who laps up the limelight like a filthy excited dog and refuses to do his discharge of a job that his days of playground neglect has led to.

And if we needed more confirmation than the murdering of Abou Diaby’s goal. In the opening minutes Walcott was turned by the shoulder of a blue shirt just as Diaby had done to set himself up. Only Diaby would be punished though. The torturing sound of Webb’s whistle came early and Diaby was stripped of his footballing rights, because of course it wouldn’t have suited the ego of Webb to have the home fans plague him for the remainder of the game. Again, Webb was soaking up being the home team’s tin god and depressing champion.

Only when Arsenal had taken the lead could Webb punish his team of choice, Birmingham, regrettably so of course. Stephen Carr pulled back Andrey Arshavin and then Craig Gardner was also branded yellow for unsporting behaviour, Gardner, who had taken as much of the ball as he had Cesc Fabregas (a massive chunk) which left the prize Spaniard twisted for the second half. Birmingham had played for every little foul to deliver deathly balls into the box from set-pieces. St Andrews was a circus of nasty beasts free to run wild by Webb’s sick fancy for some action to be a part of.

It smelt of bias and the age old doctrine that Alex Ferguson must be helped to his title at all costs. In the three o’clock kick off at Stamford Bridge Yuri Zhirkov took a dive. It was outrageously clear to see in real time on the screen in a tense north London pub, made easier by Zhirkov’s bashful glance back at the referee. Quite laughably though the penalty was given. Back in the Midlands, Chelsea were being helped even more by Webb’s sinister theatre of shit officiating, all the while the innocent Thomas Vermaelen had to watch on as men, guilty of uselessness, stole the stage.

The fear was always Webb’s incompetent role. The loathsome performance was the shameful Manuel Almunia, plucked from the Spanish second division to play in the greatest league worldwide. And that is where he belongs, down in a dark pit of mediocrity, along with Webb. Almunia had sat relatively idle behind a hardworking makeshift defence. When called upon, his soulless body was dead and his limp wrists could do nothing to clean up the situation. The talentless lummox had once again let Arsenal down. How much longer will this nightmare go on for?

Nearly as loathsome was Arsene Wenger’s choice to leave Samir Nasri and Arshavin on the bench. Then it took a love-in with Gardner to realise that Denilson was in action. It was despondent too, that Nasri overcooked the passing ethic of Arsenal when he refused to shoot and kill of the game, instead looking to square a good opportunity to his Russian team-mate. In the end it came back to haunt Arsenal when the mad monstrosity of Kevin Philips’ goal made a bitter draw extremely hard to digest, horrid enough to almost make you vomit.

The atmosphere around north London was like a funeral. Should Emmanuel Eboue have played? Why did Walcott turn back into his amateur ghost and where was Nicklas Bendtner of the last few weeks? These were the questions being asked as I walked miserably in the spitting rain to the place where I would begin drowning my sorrows. That the rain was only a light drizzle symbolised how the season stands, and how it isn’t pouring just yet. The tragedy though, was having to embrace it all with that rat Howard Webb.{jcomments on}

Bendtner played well i thought, help the ball up and even came back to do work thats others werent doing. He was getting crap service the whole game.

Im not one to badmouth an arsenal player, but honestly, how many mistakes does it take for us to sort out this keeper situation. Thats our title out the window.

Yea to be honest Acheron I didn’t think Bendtner was awful. I just thought he would be on a real role now until the end of the season. I expect him to score at home against Wolves but I was getting the feeling there is more to Bendtner than we saw yesterday.

But yea the serive was shite!

    Brilliant piece.
Totally correct in all points, except maybe Nicky B wasnt that Bad…

Arsenal have had to time and again put up with WEBB and his zenophobic ego….

Arsenal deserved to win yesteday , not because they were the better side but they scored 2 goals….

He cost us again as did Almunia but all is not lost…this season is far from over and i can see some very weird results from now on in…..
Yes, Arsenal will probably need to win all 6 of their matches, but if we do………..!!!!

Gallas and RVP will both be available for Spurs on April 14th and that will help big time….

Yea Prez the games United and Chelsea have played over the last few weeks have not been the ones where they will drop points. Apart from Chelsea vs Rovers.

They both have hard games coming up but to lose it how we did yesterday at this stage is so frustrating. Cesc was limp but still put Nasri in. He might have hit the keeper if he shot, of course, but he has the ability to score from there and I thought he should have had a dig.

And yes again, Webb took the first Arsenal goal away for absoulety nothing. It never once occured to me as I was going mad celebrating that there was a foul leading to the goal. Fucker!

I’ve not seen the actual stats but it seems to me that Webb’s party piece is booking black players. Every game he allows good old British pros to kick us on a rotational basis yet cards our players for their first fouls. I may be wrong on this as Webb’s a policeman and they’d never be racist would they?

We shouldn’t really point fingers coz what has happened, happened. Taking Arsene’s team selection to task considering our fixture list is also a bit much. Andrey Arshavin, he’s good but has been missing sitters. Nasri didn’t set the team alight in the last match he played in as far as I remember. Almunia was undone by an offside that was never given.

I feel that perhaps we’ve all been here before, the game has to be won, yes we’ve even won it and then we give away a goal that I saw our local pub team concede last week, your article is spot on I agree with everything you say but we just cannot carry on throwing these points away, what really worries me now is that come Wed. no Fabregas to boss the midfield a pathetic display from the rest and then all downhill. Somebody please tell me I’ve got it all wrong and that we’ll stuff them 3-0.

Yes we have been here before Lennie, but the way we took the lead was quite similar to how we have won games recently. It was the same pattern. We push the hardest to score and then fianlly get the goal we deserve (and what a goal I might add). Then it’s always in the messiest fashion we throw it away. 6 wins and a draw is good form, but you feel there is no room for error right now, all that room disappeared earlier in the season when we were poor.

We know that we cannot keep a clean sheet but how we were the second top scorers before yesterday is quite amazing considering most of our players proved against br*m they couldn’t finish. Theo, Arshavin, Bendtner, Nasri, diaby all had great chances that they should have put away.

Also why don’t we fucking pack the defence after we go one nil up with five minutes to go? I don’t understand it. Before manuels mistake the ball should have been cleared several times but there was only the four defenders and diaby in a position where they could actually do some defending for a set piece that we know was going to be hoofed into the box. Why wasn’t Bednter back helping out. Where was Denilson and Cesc and why was Arshavin standing a few yards in front of the keeper instead of marking the right back and he could have been in a position to block the cross???

Yea you’re right db. But the guys who missed chances have been producing some quality stuff recently. Almunia has one save to pull off, one moment to be our fucking hero and he can’t. I loved his penalty save, but I can’t remember one game this season where I’ve gone, Almunia kept us in it. Een Boaz Myhill managed one of them !!

The team needed to give a little extra yesterday, but it’s so annoying to see Almunia just look so pathetic again.

As a defence we sat way to deep for the goal. It caused a problem because the ball came down practically on the edge of the box. The mess ensued. We should have been higher up.

I simply cannot understand why anybody could believe that Bendtner had a decent game. He was shit. His brain is slow and his first touch abysmal. Liverpool have Torres, Utd have Rooney and Chelsea have Drogba. Yes, I know RVP is injured, but we have Bendtner. Arsenal need a world-class centre-forward and we have Bendtner. And we have Almunia. Now there’s a problem if ever I saw one. Despite all this and the combined incompetence of the PL referees, like Webb, Atkinson et al, we are still close-ish. If we start next season with this bloke in goal and Bendtner up front then something is seriously wrong. As it stands I believe that the FA and the referees have already decided where the title is heading.

Bendtner’ touch was what let him down yesterday. When he gets that right he gets everything else right because he has a big body and can use it to hold off defenders. When he has a lose touch, most defenders are more mobile than him and nick the ball away. Puyol and Pique are both mobile defenders which is why Nik must ensure his toch is clean everytime come Wednesday!

Almunia has been a liability all season. Remembering back to home games earlier in the season Pompey & Birmingham he had a couple of shockers. At the business end he is going to be found out again and again. Would mad jens have pushed that one into the net at the end? Not a chance!

as i read through the various comments i would share the same view about Referee Howard Webb, poor and bias decisions….despite the rules of football you will always have Referees supporting teams undercover….believe it or not…as this was quite evident with “ANANCY WEBB” decisions yesterday…there is politics and there is politics in this game of football which should left with no denial…but how can it be eradicated?…it is time for these referees who made blatant bias calls to be penalized too!!!!!!…nonetheless as an ARSENAL supporter there should be no excuses at this time…there was the chance to won that game….what matters most is for us as supporters to drive a positive energy in our team and send them to victory…possibilities are chelsea and man utd will drop points…most essentially we need to maintain a high level of concentration as this was lacking yesterday in our final part of the game which cost us….

Lay off Almunia, he made a mistake, get over it. Arsharvin made a mistake from 9 yards missing a relatively simple shot that nobody will remember that would have sealed the points.

Manuel had made some good saves earlier in the game and we must not forget the penalty he saved last week we would not have gotten all 3 points there had he not!

He isn’t the best goalkeeper but he is the best we have at present so we need to back him. At least till the end of the season.

Keep blasting our players for every mistake means they will be more nervous about making more and therefore more likely to make them.

If we want to win something we need to back each and every player 100% from now till the end of the season.

I’m sorry but am I the only one noticing that these s..t bottom dwelling teams keep making their pitch ridicilously bad, especially in the middle of the park against Arsenal. When we played Stoke away, their ground was disgusting. Few days later against Villa, their ground was in great shape. It seems this is a new way to play against Arsenal. I’m really looking forward to seeing St Andrews for the next match. As far as the game goes, you can blame Almunia all you want. But the attitude of some players has to get looked at. I love Nasri. He will be one of the world’s best players very soon. But one-on-one with the keeper at 0-1 with 5 minutes to go and doing what he did was childish. Kind of stuff you see kids doing in the park. Who saw Bendnter run into the box on his left with a chance to shoot, only to pass it to Arshavin who missed the ball. Who saw Diaby turn his man in the box giving himself a yard of space to shoot only to turn and pass it backwards. I think this Arsenal squad is class and will win titles soon. But Wenger has to work hard on developing them to be ruthless. Having a will not to just beat these kind of teams, but to smash them. I still think there is a chance for the title. The last 6 games are not easy, but are very winnable. Let’s see it through boys

I think in a game where almost any tackle goes, the turn by Diaby was nothing more than shielding the ball, something that every defender does when letting the ball run out of play, moving their body any direction to prevent the attacker any chance of reaching the ball but with no intention to play the ball themselves. Diaby’s was just a turn and shot, what did Webb see to give the foul to Birmingham. This when we were camped in the opponants third of the pitch and would have platformed us on to better things. I would love to see refs come out and explain themselves and their decisions. Everybody makes mistakes but the ref seems to be able to make game deciding ones and get away with no explanation. Like how can their striker not be interfering with play when he stands right next to the defender trying to clear, surely he is active as soon as he moves toward the ball blocking a clear path to the ball. Proffesional refs was supposed to aradicate a lot of these problems but it has just made them less approachable and more arrogant
