Arsenal Mount Champions League Fightback!

theo-walcott-415x275

Arsenal fought back from two goals down to hold holders Barcelona to a barnstorming 2-2 draw in their Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Emirates.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s brace gave the visitors a deserved two-goal cushion before the hour mark.

But the introduction of Theo Walcott gave Arsenal a new dynamism and goals from the England forward and Cesc Fabregas gave the hosts parity on the night.

Barcelona take the away goals advantage into the second leg, although they will be without captain Carlos Puyol, who was sent off for a foul on Fabregas that gave him his goal from the penalty spot.

Fabregas will also miss the return tie at his boyhood club after picking up a third booking of the competition, although it is doubtful he would have been able to play anyway after ending the match limping around the field injured with the Gunners having used all three substitutes.

Indeed, it was a poor night for the Premier League challengers on the fitness front, with William Gallas and Andrei Arshavin both taken off with injuries in the first half.

Their replacements, initially wowed by the free-flowing Catalans, more than impressed with their fight-back although the injury to Gallas was key as midfielder Alexandre Song – forced to move back to centre-half – let Ibrahimovic escape him for both goals.

But the Gunners showed great resolve to draw level and by the end they were all over the visitors, reduced to 10 men and reliant on calm keeping from Victor Valdes.

Much had been made of Ibrahimovic’s failure to shine in the Champions League, particularly against English opposition, but he answered the doubters with a superb salvo early in the second half, having looked a touch nervous in the opening 45 minutes.

A similar level of hype accompanied the threat of Lionel Messi, but the Argentine – widely regarded as the best player in the world – was anonymous in one of his worst performances for the Blaugrana in recent memory.

Ibra’s finishes were majestic: the first, 25 seconds in, was a delicate lob from an angle over the onrushing Manuel Almunia, while the second on the hour was a blasted effort into the roof of the net after Arsenal’s defence parted for the Swede.

Both goals saw Almunia and Gael Clichy culpable, the former for his decision-making and the latter for his positioning, although the real culprit was poor Song, who was caught ball-watching when he let Ibrahimovic run clear twice.

Pep Guardiola’s side dominated the opening exchanges, racking up 12 efforts on goal and a possession ratio of 70-30 in the first half hour, with Arsenal restricted to a sole effort when Samir Nasri sent a curling shot wide of the far post.

The Gunners stayed in it thanks to some poor shooting from Ibrahimovic and an inspired first-half performance from Spanish goalkeeper Almunia.

Almunia, who has expressed an interest in playing for England after nearly six years in the country, made a series of top-class stops including one remarkable triple save to deny Ibrahimovic, Xavi and Messi.

Arsenal largely shackled Messi, and in the latter stages of the half Arsene Wenger’s side grew into the game and were a match for Barca, pressing higher up the pitch and going close on two occasions.

On 35 minutes, excellent wing-play by Niklas Bendtner culminated in a brilliant cross for Abou Diaby, who beat Gerard Pique and Daniel Alves to the header only for the ball to bounce wide.

Two minutes later, the blushes of both Bendtner and Alves were spared by the linesman’s flag when the Brazil full-back missed Nasri’s cross and the Denmark striker first fired against Victor Valdes before putting the rebound on the post.

Arsenal were struggling on several fronts: Andrei Arshavin and William Gallas aggravated injuries and were taken off, while Fabregas – who started despite carrying a knee problem – barely featured before picking up a booking that ruled him out of an emotional return leg to his boyhood club.

But 23 seconds after the second-half restart, Song allowed Ibrahimovic to get between him and Thomas Vermaelen with Clichy pulled wide, while Almunia was perhaps a little quick to race off his line to head off the danger.

Ibrahimovic, off form in recent months, spotted the half chance and lofted an inch-perfect chip over the onrushing keeper that curved delicately inside the far post.

Arsenal were desperate for a goal and almost levelled when Bendtner powered a header on target after good work from Clichy on the left.

But Valdes was well-placed and Barca almost got a second from the counter attack as Xavi headed wide from close range after Alves exploited Clichy’s up-field position.

They bagged their second five minutes later when, after Clichy was pulled wode, Vermaelen was dragged away from goal by Messi and Ibrahimovic was given the freedom of the penalty area by the slow-reacting Song.

His finish into the roof of the net was emphatic as his first was deft and the match looked out of sight for the Gunners.

They battled gamely enough though and, soon after coming off the bench, Walcott raced away from Maxwell and rifled a low shot in off Valdes to give Arsenal hope.

Pressing higher up the pitch and right in the tiring visitors’ faces, Arsenal were cutting Barca apart and, after more good wide-play by Walcott, Bendtner cleverly nodded the ball down to Fabregas, who collided with Puyol to earn a penalty.

Puyol was given his marching orders while fellow Catalan Fabregas rifled the spot-kick into the bottom left with five minutes left.

It was effectively 10-a-side though, as Fabregas appeared to injure himself and returned to the field after receiving some treatment, barely mobile in the closing stages.

Arsenal still had the edge though, with calm keeping by Valdes keeping them at bay, and a topsy-turvy first leg ended in a compelling draw that, while giving Barca the advantage, is finely balanced for the return a week on Wednesday.

The great season of Diaby was ruined by his terrible display of today. Anyway Nasri was awesome again, the same Song in the first half playing with that aggressivity that we need and the introduction of Walcott and Denilson was very good.

This is the first time that I liked a lot Bendtner, even that he didnt score for me this was his best game of the season. And dont you think this was the best dispaly of Almunia since he plays for Arsenal?

Barca without their two central defender will suffer a lot in the 2nd leg. Marquez is supersloooow and Milito is very average. Hope we play with Song-Nasri-Rosicky in the middle and Arshavin-Walcott-Bendtner up front.

Nasri was man of the match – I think he can take Fabregas’ role next week. Almunia would have been MOTM if it were not for yet another howler. Diaby looked like a deer in the headlights. The gulf in class and maturity between both teams was a bit humbling. For long periods we were not even on the same planet. Great English fight back – we’re in with a shout. We must attack next week – with abandon.

If in the second leg we can have a much better midfield performance then and only then do we have a chance. I thought our closing them down was non existence and the only one’s who seemed to be playing well were Clichy, Nasri and Bendtner. Forget about his mistake on the first Barcelona goal cause Almunia in the first half kept us in the game and the tie. We all know all the doom and gloom moaners will be out in the next couple of days calling this player and that player this and that but we have to remember we were playing without doubt the best team in the world and they showed that in the first hour. The way they played they’d of beaten anyone on the planet.

Agree that Diaby was particularly disappointing given his recent superb form. Bendtner continues to grow in stature while I thought the much-maligned Denilson was excellent from the moment he came on. Clichy good again too and if only almunia could play like he did in the first half more often. Overall, fair play to the team for showing such character to overcome yet more injuries to fight back and get a result against a class side that Barca clearly are. Not impressed with referee at all.

Yes Almunia was caught out but the main problem was Song not picking up the big Swede. If we hadn’t lost Gallas this wouldn’t of happened, a shame really, great result though, more than I expected.

and who do we have to thank.. Arsene Wenger!

i know i sound like a fcking wanker with all this moaning.. but really.. this kind of oversight is just unacceptable.. if u end up with the two worst goalkeepers in the league.. its not a coincidence.. its juz stupidity

first of all you have to say well done, Barcelona gave us a master class. That was Barcelona at thier best, I appreciate they were away from home but that should encourage all arsenal supporters. We didn’t play paticularly well and certian individuals were very poor and we still got a result.. This can only get better !! We can win at the nou camp we have more in our locker than Barcelona, let’s hope all injuries are minor. Come on Arsenal!!

Agree it was Song fault but we cant blame him he´s not a central defender and when he played in midfield he was great but in defence he looked a bit lost. Anyway I choose him over Silvestre and Campbell all the time.

I think the pace of the game got the best of Diaby but I think he’ll be ready for the next game. Almunia had a shocking moment but he really saved us from being down 3-0, at least. Bendtner played well for me, I can’t believe he is getting stick for the header…he went for power and it just went at the keeper. He was involved in both goals, don’t forget. Theo should start and just run at the fullbacks all game long. I think Arshavin, while talented, can’t track back and cover on the counter. We need better communication from the center backs to combat the slashing strikers. We’re not out of it yet. Come on you Gooners!!!

it’s confirmed yet but things are not looking good for him. Gallas is deffenitly out though!
So for tuesday we r without Cesc, Gallas, and Arshavin. Let’s pray no more injuries on saturday.
We r lucky to be stil in the tie. I thought Diaby had a night mare today but while critisising Diaby I must say that he might have been affected by the fact that Cesc today was only at 40-50% of what he is normally capable of. I thinks Cesc wasn’t really fit to start, but at the end he showed great reslient and his team responded. What a captain! Will be missed at Nou Camp.

Yep I know I read on goal.com the words of Cesc and he said that he´s afraid of being out for the rest of the season and that he really thinks theres something very bad. Fortunately is the position that we have best covered with Rosicky, Nasri, Diaby and Denilson.

Im more afraid to lost Arshavin or Gallas for next tuesday.

The most important thing for me was that we didn’t stop believing. But if we give them space next match as we did yesterday, I am afraid they will run all over us. It took an inspired strike (and poor goalkeeping) from Theo to galvanise us.. we cannot rely on a moment of brilliance to revive us. Arsene, we MUST go for closer marking, and please increase our bench depth..

I hate to say it but as much as i like the guy I think Song looked a little out of it before he got moved back to CB, never mind the errors leading up to the goals. I think Messi may have had a better game if Song had been able to continue as DM. BUT… focus on the positive… thats ANOTHER Arsenal like performance in the bag and at least NB wont have that brick wall Puyol in his way in the 2nd leg! I can see him bagging an important goal on tuesday!!seriously looking forward to the next game!!!

I hate to say “I told you so” but yesterday I questioned the advisability of playing half fit players.

The facts that Fabregas was largely ineffective, apart from the penalty, and could now be out for a considerable period and the breakdown of Gallas merely confirm my worst fears.

Wenger must take a much more pragmatic view of injuries, we have seen throughout his time at the club that rushing injured players back into action just does not pay-off in the long term. Rosicky, Walcott, Fabregas, Diaby and now Gallas and Fabregas again are all testament to this ill considered approach.

I,m afraid that sentiment and the player’s desire to play against his boyhood team seem to have over-ridden commonsense. Add to this that he was already on two yellow cards and was bound to be “committed” and the decision to play him looks even worse.

gallas will be a bigger miss than cesc. Nasri has been performing better than cesc recently whose ego has lead to him getting injured. Refusing to come off against birmingham cost us and i know he won and scored the penalty yesterday but for both games we were carrying him.

Our lack of centre backs will be worse because if Campbell is unable to play in the big games then song will have to play there and we will have a much weakened midfield. Maybe its time to bite the bullet and recall big phil senderos??

We showed great fighting spirit yesterday and a year ago we would have given up after going two down. However, although Barca were very good, we played poorly for most of the match and let them have the ball without putting pressure on them. Then when we got the ball it was as though we had forgotten how to play. The passing was slow and sloppy and although we made some chances we have to be more ruthless and take them.

Overall though I have to congratulate the team for their fighting spirit but if they can combine that with out normal level of technical play then we will have a chance at the nou camp.

by the way why did most of the fans chant henry’s name more than any of the players who were playing for us?? it’s ok before and after the match but during why don’t we shout for the likes of Bendtner, nasri, clichy who had relatively good games and support the likes of diaby who had a tough time?? Henry’s gone and he isn’t coming back. Let’s stop living in the past.

at the start of the season basically all the fans and presumably staff were happy with manuel in goal because of his form last year. And if you’re such a fucking genius who would you like us to buy who is available and who we can realistically afford.

And you must have missed the fact that Bedntner assisted both goals.

We need to play with more width. as soon as theo came on he started causing them problems just because he stayed wide. And Barca showed us how to stretch the play by keeping their wingers wide and high all the time. We must push our wingers higher and wider up the pitch to stretch out the game but unfortunately our wingers are not real wingers but they all like to play behind the striker. Play Vela on the left and theo on the right and stick with diaby for now because he has the speed and size to get in the box and do something.

This will stretch the game and make it harder for them to press the ball so aggressively.

I have to agree with you DB10 about our captain’s ego. Gallas will be a bigger loss than Fabregas and the fact that our play will not now be centred around the Spanish Maestro will give opposing teams more4 problems as they will have to find someone else to clatter.

I don’t think Arshavin will be missed, he seems to have been missing for much of the season and never looks fully fit.

Let’s hope Walcott can get a run in the starting eleven, his pace last night ripped the Barca defense apart. A few more runs like last night and some crosses onto Bendtner’s head could just provide the lift that we need to see us through the rest of the season.

I said before the game it would be 2-2 but to be honest i would of rather we would had lost the game 1-0 and put on a better performance. We were awful last night when this draw was made i said Barca would eat us for breakfast if we try to match them playing a 4-3-3, that idiot AW must switch to a 4-5-1 at the nou Camp if there is any chance of us making the Semi finals. I think certain players were expose as to being proven that there not as good as what some fans think, for example Song he was back to his old donkey self yesterday and Bendy is just unbelievably crap. what people see in this guy only God knows i think its time deluded fans stop with all this Bendy praise.
