The Dream Is Over AGAIN For Another Year! Messi Is On Fire!

thirdkit

Lionel Messi scored all four goals as Barcelona thumped Arsenal 4-1 to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League at the Camp Nou.

The holders progressed 6-3 on aggregate as the Argentine scored a 21-minute first-half hat-trick before adding a late fourth after Nicklas Bendtner’s 18th-minute opener.

Barcelona will now face Jose Mourinho’s Internazionale in the semi-finals while the Gunners will need to lift the Premier League title to prevent Arsene Wenger’s side from going five seasons without a trophy.

In the absence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Messi played centrally and went close on two occasions inside 11 minutes to signal his intent.

A rifled diagonal drive was pushed past the post by Manuel Almunia before the 22-year-old curled a 20-yard effort just over the crossbar.

But it was the Premier League club who stunned the Catalan crowd by taking the lead on the break with their first meaningful effort on goal.

Abou Diaby bundled Gabriel Milito off the ball in the centre circle and he fed Theo Walcott on the right who squared for Bendtner. The delivery was a little behind the Dane, who saw his initial effort saved by Victor Valdes, but he smuggled in the rebound.

Diaby played a precision pass to bisect the Barca defence for the opener and moments later had another opportunity to put Walcott through on goal, but this time his pass was cut out – and soon after his team were pegged back.

Arsenal’s lead lasted just three minutes as Messi, who saw his initial pass only half cut out by Mikael Silvestre, smashed the rebound into the top corner.

Messi equalled Rivaldo’s club record of 22 goals in the competition with that stunning strike and he almost added to his tally when he toyed with Silvestre, preferred to Sol Campbell in the heart of the defence, only to fire his shot into the side netting.

The Spanish champions took the lead on 37 minutes when an astute pass from Messi to Eric Abidal opened up the visiting defence. The centre from the left-back was cut out but Pedro flicked the ball back to the Argentine maestro who glided past Silvestre and elegantly lofted the ball over Almunia.

And just five minutes later Messi completed his fourth hat-trick of 2010.

Arsenal were caught high up the pitch and Gael Clichy played Barca onside. Messi was clean through on goal and his finish was delicious, audaciously lifting the ball over Almunia.

It could have been four before half-time for Messi; but the man from Rosario proved to be human after all, over-running the ball when bearing in on Silvestre in the Arsenal penalty area.

Barcelona tightened up after the break, mindful of the two-goal lead they lost at the Emirates Stadium last Wednesday, replacing Bojan Krkic with the more defensive Yaya Toure.

But Arsenal did carve out a couple of decent opportunities.

Bendtner spurned a golden chance after Diaby played him through, a heavy touch allowing Milito to nick the ball off his toe near the penalty spot.

And Diaby’s long sweeping ball found Tomas Rosicky unmarked 18 yards from goal but the Czech swept his first-time shot horribly wide.

Wenger threw caution to the wind by sending on Emmanuel Eboue and Eduardo in the final quarter and Barca always looked likely to put some icing on the cake before Messi notched his fourth, two minutes from time.

Eboue played him onside and after holding off Vermaelen he saw initial shot saved but calmly tucked the rebound through Almunia’s legs to put his side a step closer to becoming the first side to retain the Champions League.

Beaten by far the better side. Arsenal have a long way to go.
Thought Clichy and Nasri did well tonight. Disagree with Sky about Diaby- I thought he was poor. Lost the ball too much though he did try hard.
Special mention must go to Rosicky- did one pass find its target all night? Shocking.
Project Wenger is over for another year. Silvestre, Campbell, Rosicky, Eduardo (sorry), Vela, Denilson, Almunia and a few more- time to go if we are to improve.

I’m more upset by how we played. Messi was made to look far better than he played in this game. Is he the best player in the game today? Most likely. However, he barely had to do any work for his goals and we simply handed him possession.

We played terribly by conceding possession every other second. If we focused and slowed the game down we could have come out of this much better. I’m mostly disappointed by our lack of concentration and effort and we lost this game, rather than Barca winning it.

With the injuries we have, it was always a big ask to win this game but we should have played much better because Barca played alot worse today than they did last week.

I will also disagree with many pundits – Diaby was rubbish. Aside from his part in the goal, he was caught in possession 9 out of 10 times otherwise.

Gerry I think you’re being a bit harsh on a couple of players, ie Denilson and Vela. I thought the former played well tonight and Vela hasn’t played enough. Listen, yes we were outplayed but we were missing our two BEST players in RVP and Cesc, not to mention missing Gallas, Song and Arshavin. Also Cesc was only half fit last week. Barca had their two best players in Messi and Xavi available for both legs.

Our squad has been stretched beyond belief in the last month or so and our YOUNG side have had to battle right till the end in games in recent weeks and I think that is a testement to how well the boys have done this seaason. We were absolutely knackered tonight and it didn’t help that we had to field such inexperienced players on the bench.

Our squad is a lot better than people give us credit for and no other top side in Europe has had as many first team injuries across the whole season like we have had.

Now we’ve got 8 days rest for the big one against the scum and this might be a blessing in disguise for our title push.

Wenger needed to take the nothing to loose attitude into the match. He would have tried Cambell in the Defensive Mid role, brough in Sagna in the centre for Gallas and ebue on the right back. then he would have brought Walcott to the centre and played 4-5-1, Clitchy was playing like a never before. Denilson and Silvestre should have started in the Bench

lutongooner- do you really think vela is or ever will be good enough to improve us at the highest level? Sorry I don’t. Eduardo is not what he was and we know it. Denilson- maybe a squad player at best. Almunia- good enough for manure/ chelsea? No.
I’m just being honest. If this team wants to go to the next level some players just don’t cut it.

Lutongooner – i agree that Denilson had an ok night. Out of all the players on the pitch he was only one of a few who came out with any credit. Yes we were depleted but that doesn’t excuse the fact that they showed a lack of fight in such a big game. Would Cesc and RVP made a difference? Not really! It shows how far behind we are. After 5 years of building has the team progressed??

We do have young players but it is not as if they inexperianced! Denilson has played over 100 games!

Doesn’t it say something that we have all these injuries? Shouldn’t the squad be made up of quality replacements for when this happens (as it does every year!).

Diaby – less said about him the better!

Agree – to many hanger ons in this team. Wengers loyalty can only be streched so far. How many ponits has Almunia cost us this year? We probably have the worse GK in the PL!!

Diaby has a great game then disappears for the next month or so!

Agree about Eduardo too! He doesn’t look half the player he was and maybe it is best for him to move on and start again. Clearly his head and heart isn’t in it again!

We lack intelligence in our team,Theo, Rosicky, Diaby just did not have a clue where there were passing too, most of the time they lost possession. Our players need to take a long hard look at themselves before opening their big mouths. What I’ve seen today, we are simply winning nothing. The team that was on the pitch today will be the team that will play the last 5 games in the PL and I cannot see how we can win all our reaming games with Almunia, Sagna, Silvetre, Campbell, Eduardo, Denilson, Diaby, Walcott, Eboue Rosicky in the side Yes we have injuries but that’s not an excuse, AW should have strengthened his squad when he had the chance. We have a goal keeper who doesn’t have a brain, if you watched him today’s he booted the ball up field and it either went out for a throwing or he gave possession back to Barca. The four goals that were conceded today was Clichy playing messi onside for one of them, the last goal Eboue played 3 of the Barca players onside, and the other goals Vermalem and clichy exposed their own defence by going forward up the pitch where we lost possession by our midfileders. We were total garbage today, I’m fed up of hearing that we have injuries to our key players, but you could argue that Barca also had key players out such as their two main central defenders, Iniesta, Ibrahimovic, Henry (on the bench but did not feature) from that it’s clear that we don’t have the strength in-depth any injuries to 2 or 3 of our player first team players we cannot compete, let’s see how Manure get on tomorrow without their one man team star player (i hope they lose) if they win it will prove my point. It is simple maths Arsenal need to get shut of Sivlestre, Almuina, Eduardo, Rosicky, Denilson, Walcott and spend and buy some quality players, starting off by getting a replacement for glum clueless face Alminua, 2 recognised central defenders, a 30 goal a season striker, a defensive midfielder and plus attacking midfielder.

Well according with a lot of people this Barcelona team is the best of the history and saying that I dont think it was so bad considering that we play with only the half of our team. Without the best payer of the planet it could be a very equal game.

Diaby and Denilson were very good. Clichy the best of our team. Bendtner was ok honestly I didnt expect anything for him and he scored a good goal after that horrible assistance of Theo and then he hit the bar later so it was much more of what I expected for him.

The 3 players who I expected more were Theo, Nasri and Rosicky who played probably his worst game since he´s with us but I cant be hard on him he was only 50:50 for this game. And Eduardo not even deserve a word simply I didnt seen him.

    Messi destroyed us tonight, simple.

He is impossible to mark, such a special talent. Pedro kept on skipping between the backline also, while Bojan was doing some tricky little runs. Xavi was just cleaning up the mess we created.

Our fullbacks were nowhere to be seen tonight. Sure, Clichy was making some good runs on the left, but the end product was useless. Denilson and Diaby started fairly well, both were playing with heart, but that soon faded as Messi stole the show. Walcott was trying to get into their backline and did succeed at times, but his crossing and ability to find a lost Bendtner was impossible.

All we can do now is focus on the league with whatever players we have available. As for next season, I don’t know where to begin.

We were beaten at our own game tonight by simply the best team on the planet.

The players was totaly lost on the field,no game at all, no passing, nothing at all. I just wanna say that even if AW want to make young players and build a powerful and young squad,he must to find way to keep them together and trow the rubbish out. We lost Flamini,Hleb,Vieira,Henry,Ade,Toure, cole… maybe all of them are not something special but the were a team and if one team stay together with few changes(BETTER CHANGES) we can win a lot of titles. should be the first out till now he did not show us that he can do anything special there are some other players who should be sold for sure also we all saw them not only last night but a lot of times letting AW and US down.
One thing I do not want to hear that we are young and specially Walcot please just take a look at Messi and the Ronney

Sometimes it is embarrassing to know I am an Arsenal fan and that alot of people on here put themselves in the same bracket. Why do so many of our fans lack intelligence and are able to see things as they actually are:

Some talk about this player has to leave, this player is not good enough, this player should have played, this player should be in this position.

Lets have a bit of a reality check. We played against Barcelona. They are far and away the best team in world football at the moment. They have the hottest striker in world football who has scored 43 goals in 43 games.

We held them to a draw at the Emirates after being 2-0 down, whilst missing half of our strongest team and with others carrying knocks.

Barca will beat anyone on current form and as long as their key players are fit, Xavi, Messi, Alves, they will beat the majority of teams unless they have an injury.

If they entered the World Cup, they would win it by a distance. They have been playing this system for years now, the 4-3-3, pressing high up the pitch. They have perfected it. No matter who comes in, they will do the same job.

Any fan with half a brain will see that AW is trying to impose a similar style at our club, because he has seen it works. Barca won 6 trophies last season.

This is our first season trying to play this way and it was clear that at the start of the season, with RvP fit, we had started to get to grips with it. With all the injuries and changes we have had to make of late, it has made it hard for us to continue this.

We are 3 points off the league and still in with a chance, despite missing our best players.

Give the team and the manager a break.

And how do you plan to fund this “quality cover”?

If we can’t compete with teams like barcelona financially (which we can’t) then we must focus on keeping our 1st team fit not on spending whatever it takes to have a bench full of overpayed internationals.

How do you know that Vela won’t be good enough in 3 or 4 years? He has lots of potential and how many players have started their arsenal careers badly and then gone on to be greats (bergkamp and Henry took a long time to score their first goal whereas vela scored a hat trick on his debut).

Denilson is a squad player currently with Cesc, Diaby, and Ramsey all ahead of him. And Denilson played pretty well yesterday especially in the 1st half.

And we can’t just get rid of half our squad and replace them because of the home grown players rule that comes in next season.

Henry obviously isn’t a key player considering he doesn’t get in the team.

Comparing our squad with theirs is completely pointless as we don’t have as much money as they do. They spent 22 million on Chyrgrinksy and he didn’t even play when they had 2 centre backs out. they spent more on their 5th choice centre back than we have spent on any player in our squad.

Its obvious that if you spend as much money on transfers and wages that barca do they will have stronger strength in depth. And if you don’t have the money then you won’t. we don’t have the money and we are doing exceptionally well with the amount of money we have spent. get that into your thick skull.

Barca have taken years to be where they are now. AW is trying to emulate it and good luck to him. It is no coincidence players like Pedro, Busquets, Krkic come through the ranks. It takes years of development and lots of money.

We will get there and to do so, we need AW to stay. No team in world football would be able to cope with the amount of injuries we have had, in a supposedly weak squad already. and we are just 3 points off the PL leaders.

After watching lasts nights game I laid in bed unable to sleep and went over in my mind which members of the first team squad, if fully fit, would have made a real difference on the pitch. I came to the conclusion, about three-thirty this morning, that none would have won us the game.

Arsenal just do not play the type of football that could overcome such a superior team as Barca. When we do not have the ball we are unable to get it and keep it long enough to create any chances.

We play a zonal marking system which relies upon opponents doing the expected thing and being in the expected areas, we cannot cope with the unexpected.

Our players very rarely win the ball in a tackle, we make it easy for opponents to pick out colleagues with passes as we don’t mark tightly. Every time an Arsenal player received the ball he was immediately surrounded by two sometimes three Barca players. When a Barca player received the ball he had time to pick out his best option and make the pass, often before an Arsenal player got with six feet of him.

Ball retention is a vital part of our game and last night, and last Wednesday, we were given a comprehensive lesson in how to do it, our efforts to do so were frankly pathetic. The biggest culprit being Almunia who on several occasions kicked straight into touch when under no pressure whatsoever.

The almost total lack of possession meant that our strikers were completely starved of any sort of service, the only occasion when we did nick the ball Bendter scored.

It seems to me that we are going to have to resign ourselves to our current level of achievement, Champions League quarter finalists, Premiership top three and CL qualification, for some time to come. Continued…..

There just does not appear to be the money available to fund the purchase of the top grade players needed to improve further, nor does there appear to be the ambition in the management and directors of the club to move up to the next level.

The 2009/2010 season has not been a disaster but it has been a nightmare from an injury point of view. As next season will almost certainly be Wenger’s last I find it impossible to imagine in which direction the club will head.

What this game shows is how inferior the Premiership is to La Liga in terms of actually playing football.

Chelsea would be one of one teams who would be able to beat Barca at present. and that would be by boring football, marking their best players out the game, playing direct football and trying to nick a goal and relying on a solid back four.

There are no Stoke, Hull, Birmingham, Wolves cloggers in La Liga so Barca inevitably coming out on top. Madrid also, but not in such style.

We have top class players, we also have outstanding youngsters. We need new players, a keeper, a defender, forward to name three.

Ask yourself this. would you rather have chelsea’s squad, or our squad? The next 5 years will be good for us with the necessary additions. Not sure the same could be said for Chelsea.
