FTK Blog: “ Vengeance is a dish best served cold…”

crestclosup

Well now we can actually say that the quest for the title is over! I have taken time to compose my thoughts for this blog. I am extremely angry and ashamed of the performance put up against strugglers Wigan on Sunday. Arsenal were complacent and totally inept in the second half. They were not helped by an extraordinary decision by Arsene Wenger to take off Theo Walcott, which allowed the Wigan defence to push up 15 yards due to the lack of pace on the field from Bendtner. In my humble opinion this substitution error not only sealed our fate but compounded our complacency. Wigan overran the Gunners with sometimes only three at the back and SIX players in midfield and pushed forward in numbers. They knew that as long as they kept the ball in our half, they could get us to concede possession or set pieces. The best chance currently to score against this Arsenal team.

Losing a 2 goal lead in almost the same manner that we did against West Ham with comical goalkeeping is not only embarrassing but inept. Some of the players out there at Wigan played like softies. Diaby was pushed off the ball and Sagna played like a headless chicken. Fabianski was again just AWFUL, he was so indecisive at crosses and his judgement is clearly affected by his nerves from previous howlers. He lacks confidence and this game will have done him no favours. If he has the mental strength so often talked about by Wenger then the real Fabianski may emerge in due course. I actually do rate the fellow. Diaby? Very talented going forward, but can’t defend for toffee. In fact, without Rosicky we looked all out of shape. We cannot defend when we do not have the ball, and opposition players can make runs off the ball with impunity, safe in the knowledge that they will not be tracked by a covering midfielder whose gaze will be transfixed by the GPS bearing of the ball. Our midfielders are hypnotised by the ball’s position that I wonder if they are also wearing blinkers?

But please forget about sacking Arsene Wenger, that reaction is as futile as it is foolish. My worry is that the more dissent we hear from Arsenal fans, the more likely we are to have Usmanov exploit classic divide and rule tactics and bid for the club whilst the supporters are in disarray. I bet that are some of you out there who are thinking… Even having Usmanov’s millions will be better than this surely?

WELL DON’T EVEN GO THERE!

We have to keep our focus, and rebuild. Fans must not desert our Club. You are Gooners  ‘til you die no?

The person who should be resigning after that performance is our defensive coach. What ever he gets paid is an absolute waste of money. Some of these players are the best of their generation technically. But their football intelligence when they have not got the ball leaves something to be desired. This requires good coaching. The position of players when they do not have the ball, suggest to me that not even time is spent IN THE CLASSROOM teaching them football tactics. The other thing lacking is work ethic. Some of these players refuse to work their hearts out. They refuse to put pressure on the ball, and as for fighting to get back possession? Forget it. We need another experienced leader on the pitch like Sol Campbell, and that person needs to be in goal. Calm when needed and ruthlessly aggressive in the air. I said in a blog many months ago, that the language difficulties cannot help our defence either. English is spoken on the pitch, and in my opinion we need an English speaking goalkeeper!

Look, Arsene Wenger knows how badly we played believe me, and I am sure that some of those players who played today are in the last chance saloon. As for others in the squad?  I think that Almunia has played his last game for Arsenal In defensive midfield  we need cover for Alex Song which will probably come from the likes of Craig Eastmond who is developing very well.  In the attacking midfield department I fear that Fabregas will enjoy the World Cup with his Spanish colleagues too much and unless Arsene Wenger makes some serious buys, he could decide to go to Barcelona where he is guaranteed to win trophies. In fact keeping Fabregas is the key to success next season, and Arsene Wenger must be able to reassure him that others will be brought in to spread the winning mentality and desire to fight until the end. Will the likes of Denilson, Diaby and Eboue figure in Arsene’s plans? Who knows I think that Diaby is too good a potential player to let go, so that leaves Eboue or Denilson. I would keep Eboue. Fran Merida will almost certainly leave for Athletico Madrid if reports tonight are to be believed. Nasri and Rosicky are vital in terms of experience to our squad, and jack Wilshere should return from loan and figure prominently in starting lineups next season.

So which players should come in? What ever you read here or elsewhere, be assured that no one except Arsene Wenger and Gazidis know for sure. One certainty is that Chamakh will come to Arsenal on a free transfer leaving  money to be spent trying to attract the exciting prospect Eden Hazard who would be a wonderful attacking option.  Defensively there is talk of Bundesliga star Jerome Boateng whose 6ft 3ins will provide good cover to our defensive line. I do not think that we should keep Gallas, he will be injury prone and has too much baggage. The pairing of Vermaelen and Boateng would be a mouth watering prospect. Silvestre will depart in my view leaving Johan Djourou as a possible CB covering option. And finally yes, Arsene will buy a keeper, currently the best on offer from the point of view of home grown options is Man City’s Joe Hart. A very talented 23 yr old. He is much better than Fabianski in my opinion, the problem is that he would not want to be number two at Arsenal.

So let us all concentrate on the facts… We need 77 points to be assured of third place that must be a priority. There after the clear out must begin and then we must wait for the conclusion of the Wiorld Cup to see which players remain free of injury. Big transfer deals are unlikely to be struck before the World Cup as agents hope that their prospects will shine and push up the size of their commission, but if we can secure targets before, then we will avoid the Nasri saga of the last World Cup. We are not so far from making that break through. We need more focus, more desire to win and a return to high paced pressuring ruthless football that will once again terrify defences that we face. Get a good goalkeeper and we WILL win the title. So lets all calm down. Bite your tongue, breathe in deeply and ignore all the anti Arsenal jibes that will follow this week. We must slaughterAdebayor’s Man City next weekend and end our season on a high against Fulham. Lets make the Arsenal hating media eat their words next season by remembering the saying “ Vengeance is a dish best served cold…”

    FTK, good blog.

I’ve reached the end of my tolerance, tho. Enough.

At the end of every single recent season, I feel like I’m feeling now: PLEASE LET THE SEASON BE OVER ALREADY!

At this point, I would have absolutely no problem seeing both Diaby and Denilson leave. And that’s from someone who’s supported both players. Diaby, at 24, shows no sign of getting rid of his basic football stupidity. Just when he begins to show what a player he could be, he goes back to his old habits. He has absolutely no football brain to speak of. His display at Wigan was a disgrace. I’ve lost all faith in both players.

But it wasn’t just the players, FTK. Arsene himself approached the game with no urgency. It’s like he’d already given up on the idea of winning the league. I really am beginning to fear that he’s lost the understanding of what it means to win.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE: WE HAD A DECENT CHANCE OF WINNING THE LEAGUE IF WE’D WON AT WIGAN.

We had a serious chance if we’d won at WHL and Wigan.

A team and a manager with a winning mentality would’ve made that happen, regardless of injuries.

I do disagree entirely with you about the language issue. Almunia speaks perfectly acceptable English. AW’s previous teams had Lehamnn and plenty of non-English players in front of him. I really don’t think this is an issue.

Cech has Portuguese-speaking defenders in front of him. VDS has a Serbian defender in front of him.

    Awesome blog…

I’m worried about Wenger. He has a brilliant footballing mind, but along with that comes this blind stubbornness.

Everyone one on the planet knew exactly what we needed before the season started – primarily a central defensive midfielder and a top international quality striker.

Van Persie hasn’t given us a full season yet. Wenger had to replace Greedybayor immediately! I mean “Super Nic” isn’t, hasn’t and probably never will be that super, in my opinion. Eddie’s not been firing and unfortunately it looks like he may be off. (Gutted about that.)

We play Arshavin out of position too, which kills me! Left wing with Clichy still? Sorry, there’s been no footballing chemistry all season there!

Without Song Arsenal lack any kind of metal in the middle of the park. Eastmond? Play him alongside Song and perhaps we may concede fewer goals but I can’t see Eastmond dictating on his own just yet.

I love Diaby. Sorry! I feel he’s mis-managed. He probably needs an inspirational hug before each game. The guy is “sick” on his day. Eboue too has improved, while Sagna has quietly slid the opposite direction and doesn’t look the player he was when he first became a Goon.

Denilson, Silvestre, all our keepers our nothing short of crap.

Generally speaking, we have no movement, no fear factor, no (excuse the phrase) bulldog spirit, no physical presence and our cutting edge has fizzled out like a bad date… with no backup plan!

The difference is, Sir Alex came out today and blatantly said he has no intention of retiring. Wenger on the other hand says he will honour the year left on his contract. To me, that totally sums up our season.

Wenger is a genius but is not bigger than Arsenal Football Club.

I hope the lads turn up ready for a fight tomorrow. If not, bring on the World Cup.

for Gk position I think Mark Schwarzer would be a good option. He’s experienced in the prem, good shotstopper and handling with the ball. he’s doing really well for Fulham at the moment. He’ll be a really good buy in my opinion.
Defo we need another DM and a quality CB. really short at the back. shud hav kept senderos. he wud hav been a much better cover than that shitty silvestre

At last, I’m sick of reading what great games Diaby has had when I’ve thought he was sh*t. He’s had more than enough opportunities but bumbles along squandering possession, either passing to the oppo or running up an alley and getting his pocket pinched. I don’t find Denilson that bad though he isn’t the answer at this point in time.

    FTK

Gerry Payton certainly needs to go, our 2 main keepers are too indecisive, yes they make some spectacular saves but at least as many gaffes and this is unacceptable for a keeper, he has to be near perfect. Bring back Szcezny as back up to Joe Hart.

Its obvious that the defence needs sorting out so i’m not going to go on and on about it (unless nothing is done in the summer).

But i think the most worrying thing about our recent performances is the lack of urgency and ruthlesness from the front players. I can’t remember the last time I saw Bendtner, Nasri, Diaby, Arshavin, Eduardo sprinting off the ball. The passing football needs to have lots of people making good runs off the ball virtually all the time and our play going forward is all too static.

I can’t remember the last time we scored a goal where the forward made an intelligent run behind the defence (ljungberg style) and was put through one on one by a slid pass.

Diaby is on and off but ramsey would have been ahead of him by now and may still be ahead of him next season (hope so). You can never have to many quality centre midfielders (look at chelsea) and i would like to see another in the squad (although i don’t know who) without selling diaby.

I think for next season a new keeper, 2 new centre backs, a new midfielder and apparently chamakh is on his way. Normally I’m not one to scream buy buy buy every summer but this year I’ve had enough.

And next year please play a full team in every FA cup tie.

is it just me who thinks that Joe Hart isn’t really good enough? Or am I aiming too high?

I know there is a shortage of good keepers. Yes he’s had a really good season (for Birmingham) but I don’t think he is that commanding in the box and I’m not sure about his positioning.

So the answer is: Sign Tony Adams as a coach of our defenders!

Im agree about Gallas, let him go. But not sure about Boateng.

And there´s some people in Barcelona claiming that Pep will try to make a deal with Arsenal to change Yaya Toure for Arshavin without any money involved. They say that Toure had a bad relation with Pep and he also lost his place for Busquets and Keita so Pep wants Arshavin to replace Henry.

I thought that we only need a cheap, young cover for Song and not a big one to replace Song, but I think they could rotate evry week and we can also play with both as DM´s when we could need it. Also Toure could play as CD.

Approach and sign Paolo Maldini as our new defensive coach.

His sons, Christian and Daniel, would train in our academy and become legends themselves.

It is in the Maldini gene. :-)

Considering Silvestre’s no good anyway, Arsene should get him to run around the pitch with a wad of cash.. Atleast that way one of City’s strikers won’t be focussed on the ball ;-) The rest is upto Sol.

Lloris would be better but if reports are correct he won’t be leaving Lyon, but that may be a smokescreen put out there by AFC.

Ajayan……ROFL…………anyways…we need the following according to me in the summer..

1)GK and a new GK coach.sell fab and let Al be the second choice.

2)2CBs – 1 experienced and 1 potential.let JD and the new CB be backups while verma plays with the experienced CB.sylvestre, gallas to leave.campbell on pay as u play contract and also as a defensive coach.

3)Sell diaby and deni.both are not upto the standard of gunners.buy 1 dmf and bring back jack. let JET,coquelin or eastmond step up.

4)wingers-sell eduardo and buy chamakh…vela has 1 more season before hes up for chops…we have to show some strong policy with non performers….let barazite step up.

we need a new no.2 for AW.i think rice maybe too complacent.also AW himself needs to be given an ultimatum by the board.the next season should be his last in the club as a manager if he fails to win anything again.we need winners and a winning attitude and that is possible with an injection of new blood.UTG

Great point about Gerry Payton. It’s painfully obvious that his coaching is not up to scratch. The most improved keeper at arsenal has made his progress away from the club (at Brentford). All the others have declined the past year. I wouldn’t want Joe Hart though. Lloris may not be possible, but I’d rather we used the whole transfer budget on him than buy someone who’s not up to the job. Winning the league without a top, top keeper simply won’t happen.

Diaby is a very talented player, but not a winner. He looks happy to just play pretty football (as do numerous other players). I still cannot understand the comparisons with Paddy V. At the same age vieira was dominating the PL, and winning titles for arsenal. Denilson is by no means good enough to be a starter, but as a squad player I like him.

The point about a winning mentality is an important one. Sol Campbell has highlighted just how much this team lacks the hunger and desire to win trophies. Sol, at 35 and having won countless trophies, has shown more desire than all his teammates put together (with the exception of Cesc) since his return. The fact that Arsene hasn’t already handed him a new contract despite Sol making it very obvious he wants to stay is very unimpressive indeed. If Silvestre got two years, Sol should get at least a one year contract.

And we lack someone good to come on at two nil and shut the game down like grimandi used to. I can’t see many teams scoring late on with Song and Yaya playing centre midfield together. Personally i would love to see Yaya at arsenal and I don’t think that because we have song it means that he wouldn’t play.

Didn’t ray parlour say that if Wenger left the only people to go with him would be primorac, colbert and Gerry Peyton?? If Wenger likes him so much I don’t think he will be sacked. And wasn’t there something about Mart Poom becoming a goalkeeping coach after his year on loan here??

Yeah its not realistic to hope for Lloris but i still think that Neuer, Adler, Akinfeev, Frey are all better than Hart and they are all affordable (probably).

I am normally a very patient supporter but after that disgraceful diplay last week it is painfully obvious that it is now time for major surgery with this squad. Too many of those guys are in acomfort zone- Arsene needs to frighten the S**t out of some of those guys

We need a keeper that can stop a ball and dive under it- this goes for both Almunia and Fabianski
Silvestre needs to go – he’s collecting a lot of money each week and is nowhere near good enough
    Denilson is not good enough
    Diaby is way too inconsistent
Eduardo is not the same player he was and is obviously sfraid of getting injured again
Arshavin has gone backwards and seems to be too busy on his blog talking about himself- he should shut up and put up
