Citeh Looming

man-city-vs-arsenal

Manchester Citeh at home looms up on the horizon this Saturday tea-time. It’s an important game. Not for the reasons we’d have liked to have been though. We need six points from our remaining three games to nail down a third place finish. Draw or lose on Saturday and we’ll have to win away at Ewood Park and home to Fulham on the last day of the Premier League season to be absolutely sure of not dropping to fourth.

I’m probably one of a small minority of Gooners who holds this opinion, but I’d swap a fourth place finish for the FA Cup. I’m still irritated at the way we went out in the fourth round in the Potteries this season. It’s starting to happen too often in this great old competition. Our team selection at Wembley in the semi-final against Chelsea last season. Our supine surrender against United at Old Trafford a couple of seasons ago. It’s an issue that needs to be addressed.

I’ve always enjoyed the Carling Cup too. Although it’s a “Johnny Come Lately” as a competition it’s both broken my heart (1968, 1969, 1988, 2008) and raised my spirits (1987, 1993). I support Arsčne’s decision to play the youngsters in this competition though. They’ve given us some great cup nights to remember. The FA Cup we should be taking more seriously than we do. Having said that, Wenger does have a good record in the great old competition with four wins, a runners-up spot and two losing semi-finals. In the last few seasons he’s been far too cavalier in team selection in the FA Cup for my taste. His lack of concern for this competition transmits itself to the players. Asking good money from fans is a bit much when the club isn’t taking the tournament as seriously as it should. The Carling Cup is one thing. Neither we nor Liverpool entered the competition until it was made compulsory by the Football League. The FA Cup is another. It deserves more respect.

That off my chest, we need to concentrate on securing the six points necessary to guarantee a third place finish before our international players all go off to join their national teams for the World Cup. Off the field, I hope that Arsčne is working with Ivan Gazidis and Richard Law to identify and sign the manager’s transfer targets for the coming summer window. If any of the players he wants are going to the World Cup then there is a tendency for their fees and salaries to shoot up on the basis of a good performance in the tournament. With our scouting network we should know exactly who we want. Now’s the time to go and get them.

On the field Arsčne needs to fire a severe rocket up the rear end of the players for a horribly lackadaisical performance at the DW Stadium last Sunday. Any repeat of that this coming weekend won’t be acceptable. We need all minds on the job in hand. Whether the players are heading for South Africa or the beach that can wait for a few weeks.

Keep the faith!

Isn’t it interesting how Inter beat Barcelona last night? Just went to show that good management can overcome great players. Arsene is an idiot.

I totally agree on anything less than 100% against city is unacceptable, greedybayor will be well fired up, so will Tevez, let’s hope his (Tevez’s) enthusiasm and drive reminds some of our plodders to put in a full shift.

Vic, I had the ‘pleasure’ of being at the DW on Sunday and also the ‘Shittania’ for the Stoke Cup game.

With regard to the Stoke game, we were drawing 1-1 with 10 minutes to go and were comfortable. Then AW decided to make changes to win the game as he did not want a replay. From memory, Ramsey, Nasri and Arshavin then came on. We actually lost the game because we went for the win. I don’t think the team selection was to be criticised as we held them for 80 minutes and had AW decided to settle for a replay, we could have held them for 10 minutes more. So I would say that is was AW’s decision to ‘win or lose’ which was the mistake he made in that one.

As for Wigan, I was also at West Hame this season and the games were alarmingly similar. 2-0 and cruising, then we took our foot off the gas. The whole first half, Theo tormented their defence. The second half, he never got a kick as we decided to go down the left.

I am an AW fan and always will be, but he is beginning to come up short on the tactical front. This concerns me more than anything. On our day, we can and will, tear teams apart. But when we are having an off day, which has been a few times this season, or when we are 2-0 up with 15-20 mins left, we need to show more tactical awareness.

By all means still look to score more, but let the front 5 do that and the Back 4 and DM stay in position to ensure at the very least we don’t concede.

We have done it on occasions this season, but it seems to be forgotten very quickly and we make the same mistakes. This should not happen at a top club like ours.

    Rant Over.

Now bring on that scumbag Adebayor at the weekend. RvP hopefully will start also. Interesting………….

I think this year at Stoke was bad luck for us. We had 10 players missing, had he played his strongest team and lost one or two I am certain people would have moaned saying they didn’t need to play.

    @ Vic Crescit

I echo your thoughts regarding our FA Cup exit. It still irks me that a number of Arsenal supporters weren’t too bothered about the team exiting the contest as they viewed it would increase our chances of winning the Premiership and the Champions League. This (sadly) wasn’t proved to be the case. I bet a number of supporters wished we were still in that competition, especially with the way recent results have gone against us.

In regards to the Carling Cup, I think Wenger should change his methods in this competition by playing five of the best prospects/fringe players alongside six first team players. This will ensure that the youngsters/fringe players are gaining additional experience by playing alongside the senior players, whilst improving the team’s chances of winning the competition. The club needs to show both of these competitions (which I love) a lot more respect than they are currently doing, however I feel Wenger will continue to prioritise the EPL and the Champions League over the two domestic cup competitions.

Totally agree with you even though major decisions went Inters way, Inters EXPERIANCED players showed how to play tactical football unlike our idiots.

    Vic,

You’re not the only one hoping our highly paid Chief Executive is working with Wenger to secure the reinforcements that are so obviously needed.
Despite the club not having a single fully fit centre back available, neither Campbell or Sylvestre can be considered in that category, I doubt if there will be any movement on a signing, it will be “just wait and see if Djourou comes back fit and well”. Remember the January transfer window and the Bendtner situation!

In any well run club the obvious targets, goalkeeper, centre back, holding midfielder and striker, would have been identified, approaches made and pre-contract agreements signed.

There is little evidence that anything is happening, I suspect that the board are waiting to see if Wenger is prepared to carry on for another year or whether he will depart for pastures new.

    JIN

I think you’re being a bit harsh on Sol, not that he’s going to be the long term solution but his pace has surprised quite a few of us recently, including the commentators. His experience is invaluable as is his dominant presence, all that can only be good for a youthful team so often found wanting an experienced head in the team.
Admittedly he was there at that shambolic performance at the DW but it’s still early days, on top of which he’s probably still not up to his optimum fitness yet.

As for the other twerp, fair enough.
