Blackburn loss highlights Arsenal’s dumbing down on standards

emiratesempty
by JAMES CURTIS As if having to travel to Blackburn on a bank holiday for a 5.00pm kick-off  wasn’t bad enough for the Arsenal fans. And then to witness such a lowly effort of football, well, it made writing about it pointless. What is there to say other than bollocks? I pondered, and then decided that the least I could do was try and put some sort of ramblings together, because if not I’d be no better than Arsenal’s performance yesterday: lazy! At the very least it will give you a place to let off some steam.

If anything, the game at Ewood Park did help me to understand a very important part of life: child birth! One day I guess I’ll be there at the bedside in the hospital unaware of the pain of child labour, but then I’ll think back to a run of Premier League games towards the end of the 2009/10 season, squeeze my partners hand gently while staring knowingly into her eyes and say, “it’s OK dear, I understand exactly how it feels, just one more push and it will all be over.”

That final push will be Fulham, and then this season shall be finally be finished. There can’t be a fan anywhere who wants to prolong it and when things finally come to a close next week the summer will become enjoyable and fun-filled. For the fans or for the Arsenal players? Both I guess, although Arsene Wenger’s team looked to have already begun their holidays, while many fans crawl in the front door late and then crawl even slower out of it heading for work in the morning.

Playing nonchalantly might be understandable if the players didn’t have something to prove. Since losing to Spurs, Arsenal were not pushing for the title and qualification for the Champions League was all but sealed. For a few though, it’s not as if their position in the team next season is guaranteed. So, with Wenger poised to get the chequebook out in the summer, you’d have thought certain players would be carrying out their duties with enough panache to fill the manager with utter confidence. None of this was present.

I thought, listen to Wenger and hear him out about poor decisions from the referee, but I couldn’t. We’ve heard it all season and there comes a time when blaming somebody else draws a sigh from even the most bias Gooner. There was no foul on Lukas Fabianksi for the winning Blackburn goal, just more readiness to reach the ball from Christopher Samba. Instead of being powerful the Pole flapped, and despite Samba’s huge frame the Arsenal players did little to push him off the keeper. It was a sign of Arsenal’s naivety and rather than deal with the situation themselves, the easy option was to wait for the referee’s whistle.

Perhaps Wenger is an easy touch. Or, maybe he isn’t and instead the players are completely deluded by their own ability which they see as enough to remain healthily in the pecking order at the Emirates. The likes of Diaby, Nasri, Sagna and Walcott have all had patchy seasons where we have witnessed their greatness in one game, only for it to be followed by their anonymity in the next. Either they are replaceable, or have the talent yet just seem content to show off on one day and see that as enough for a couple of weeks.

The likes of Rosicky, Denilson, Arshavin, Eboue and Eduardo all fall into that category. Tie those nine names together and you have some serious talent, yet sadly in the 21st Century Premiership it’s not enough to succeed. The elements that should be judged are desire, imagination and reliability and it would appear Wenger is over-marking on technique, congeniality and potential. Sadly at Blackburn, the feeling was as if the individual results for this campaign had already been leaked; everybody it seemed had achieved the C grade required to advance to next season. {jcomments on}

Good article, i know AW says we need 2-3 players but i can think of 8 that can go straight away, 3 keepers, Arshavin,Silvestre,Eduardo,Vela,Denilson are definately not up to it. I think the thing that angers us is where is the passion, Blackburn had nothing to fight for yet they wanted it and other than SC no-one did our end, we need Flamini back, Cahill, players that can fight and play…Diaby, Nasri, Eboue, Walcott are all squad players not first team players!

Once again, as always, Arsenal players fell to the trap of being unable to handle physical sides while their manager, also sounding like a broken CD, blamed everyone else except those paid to get the job done. And it is so painful that for 5 seasons, we have been unable to respond to the English game(at least the rugby-like side of it) and while all the so called ‘less technical sides and their dumb managers ‘improved’ on how to bully, intimidate, systematically foul and even beat Arsenal, Wenger and his overgrown, lazy and petulant ‘babies’ have refused to this (now terminal) Achilles heel.
The situation is further aggravated by the knowing, looming and disturbing signs that show that once again, the mediocre as well as the lazy and the nearly great will be group together by our ALL-KNOWING Professor!

Its importaint to note the missing billy g and thomas V. As well as being the back bone of our defence they are also very importaint for our attacking play, we are a team that builds from the back and yesterday with the two old farts this was impossible, silvestre is a terrible passer and often just hoofs the ball up to walcott, Song is also very importain because he picks the ball up from the defence and then allows the other CM players to get foward, I would also say that Denilson was sorely missed yesterday as he is a great short passer of the ball and that was what we really missed yesterday, the old mantra of pass and move was no where to be seen, Please do not forget that when this team has its full starting eleven rested and confident we are as good as any team in the world this is not my opinion this is fact,

Fact you say? Fact backed up by silverware by any chance or FACT as in according to FIFA 10 for the PS3?

Yes it COULD have been oh so different if we had a whole team of players available but the only FACT is that we didn’t.

Will RVP (if he’s still here) be fit all of next season? Doubt it very much as he has not managed a full season for 5+ years now. One 1st class player needed.

Gallas here next season? Doubt it. Another player needed to partner TV.

If Almunia/Fabianski have not been replaced with a world class goalkeeper by the end of July, Wenger can fuck off now as. He’s had 3 seasons to address this position and hasn’t & that is what has cost us the most this season.Another postion that needs filling.

So thats at the very least THREE 1st team positions that need filling. Now if its as widely believed the player we will definately sign in June is Chamakh from Bordeux on a free (?!) is that the world class forward we need? Presume it must be….

Wenger says that he is looking to add 2 maybe 3 players to this squad.

I’m not looking forward to next season at this rate.

Black clouds over N5, something needs to change.

Arsenal supporters who less than enamoured with yet another season of relative failure, and finishing in the top four without a significant result in either cup competition and only a quarter final in the Champions League, is failure for a “top four” club, should give the final game of the season a miss.

Perhaps when the board look at The Emirates with only 15,000 people in it they will realise that unless the club buys top quality players then the likelihood is that in two or three seasons that figure will be regarded as a good crowd.

Manchester City are in poll position to overtake Arsenal next season and it’s likely that Spurs will up there as well.

Neither Chelsea or Man. United are going to suffer a disastrous drop in form so we will be scrambling for fourth place at best.

Fans have only to look at Liverpool to realise just how cold it can be outside of the privileged elite.

Wenger has been papering over the cracks for the last two or three seasons, well now the paint is peeling off the woodwork and the ceiling is about to fall in.

We have a threadbare squad that can play pretty football but it can’t defend and does not have any sort of killer instinct.

Wenger has faced teams put out by Alladyce for years yet he has not once been able to come up with tactics to combat the combativeness. He just does not have a Plan B.

I can’t see our supine Chief Executive and equally remote board putting any sort of pressure on the manager and I fear he will be left to stubbornly pursue his own agenda to the further detriment of this once great club.

    Danish Gooner,

By proper football do you mean the proper football his team played against Barcelona? Diving, cynical fouls, feigning injury, trying to get opponents booked, time wasting and every other negative tactic in the book.

    Mourinho? No thanks!!!!

With Arsene, it is mainly about “economics”, maybe his masters in that field is leading to a P.H.D. (permanent head damage). Stubborn in making decisions and wanting to be acknowledged to be right most of the time, he is not helped by his “not-so-effective” coaching staff:

Asst Mgr: Mr Yes man – Pat Rice (please give effective solutions to help the team, even if they might contradict with Mgr’s ideas. Say “No” sometimes)

1st team coach: 2nd righthand man – Boro Primorac, who advice Arsene on decisions in team tactics, players recruitment, training etc.

GK Coach: Gerry Peyton – what has he been feeding Almunia, Fabianski & Mannone ?!?!

Fitness & Conditioning Coach: Tony Colbert – Have our players been getting body core strengthening exercises in minimise serious injuries and fatigue?

Physio/Asst Physio: Colin Lewin/ David Wales/ Neal Reynolds – Slow recovery rate from injured players, can the process be improved?

Club Doctor: Gary O’Driscoll – Any prescription for the state of our first team players?

Offnote: Chief Scout, Steve Rowley, and team: Please recommend useful players for recruitment to Ivan and Arsene (not Primorac) this end season (before WC10).

If the players do not wish to put on the Arsenal jersey with pride and are in no mood to play and win against Fulham next, we could just inform the FA that team Arsenal shall forfeit the match, giving Fulham a default 2-0 win.

No, we don’t want that, neither would I want Mourinho at our club, but surely there’s a compromise between Mourinho and this pathetic, laughable, weak-minded, prima donna, undisciplined AW-inspired team.

We could do with some of what Mourinho brings to his teams: discipline, toughness, a bit of cynicism, total commitment, fight. This Arsenal team are easily bullied, easily figured out. Our players offered absolutely no protection or support to Fabianski, who was targeted by Fat Sam’s players all game long.

Would Adams, Keown, Dixon have just left Fabianski out there to deal with all that deliberate gamesmanship all by himself?

This team is pathetic, utterly utterly pathetic.

A top class team should have back-up players who are just as reliable, just as determined to fight, just as willing to defend the shirt as our best choice players. And when the hell can any of us expect to have all our best choice players available anyway, with this brittle squad?

when arsenal defeated porto 5-0 in CL,main here argued that Nasri will easily replace Cesc..After watching these matches I doubt whether that will ever happen ..
As far as the next season goes, our prime objective should be to keep hold of Cesc and Robin ..They are key to arsenals success…

I would like Fabio Capello to be our new Mgr, if Arsene decides not to renew his contract after season 2010/2011.

Capello has won La Liga and Serie A titles and he is only missing the EPL title (for 3 of the big leagues in Europe). Lure him with this carrot to help achieve something for himself and the club as well. (over to you, Mr Ivan Gazidis)

Come to Arsenal, Fabio, after you are done with the England national team after WC10. (PS: Fabio’s contract with the national team ends in summer 2011, after signing in Jan 2008 for 2 1/2years)

it felt like diaby never had mind to create da pass and walcott would should try to get inside and give something to robinson instead of striking da defender most of da time. he should really improve his dribbling abilities and try some left footed shot as he had done before.

Inter might not have been everybodies idea of what football should be based on the second leg. But over 180 minutes Barca had only one plan where Inter had two. We forget quite easily how good Inter were in the first leg, quite attacking and outgoing,

Arsenal completely lack any sort of imagination Inter have shown in the Champs League this year. These players have no imagination.

Joshhh, I don’t think anybody has forgotten we were in the title race four games ago, and that was a great achievement, yes, because as you point out we had so many injuries too.

But the anger on this thread I believe is born from the last three games. As soon as there is nothing to play for, guess what, the team don’t play.

The fact that the same players were performing before the defeat at Spurs (again, as you rightly point out, performing well) but are not performing now since the title race is over, is what hurts the most. So they proved they can, but when they don’t have to they wont. I think this is what hurts the fans at the moment.

    Last 8 games

    won 1
    drawn 3
    lost 4

You’re right of course that we were in with a chance before the tottenham game and I think that is why we are all so disappointed with the complete collapse since then.

The main thing which disappoints me is not that the squad players lack ability but that most of them seem to be coasting through games and they don’t appear to be motivated.

And the other thing is that we didn’t focus on the defence sooner. Remember last year when Rvp got injured we suddenly put song and denilson in a holding midfield role together and got several boring 0-0 draws and then built on those to finish the season strongly with boring 1-0 and 2-1s. Really i would have liked to have seen the manager realise that over the past 2 months or so we have been rubbish going forward and not really creating many chances and decided that we should be more defensive, not give away many goals and try and win some tougher games more boringly.

and i love arsenal so that is why i do care where we finish.
