CESC – READY TO GO?

fabregasjpg

“On the rooftops shouting out, baby I’m ready to go!”

Thus sung Republica’s lead vocalist Saffron in 1996. If what I’m hearing is true, then Cesc Fàbregas is currently singing the same song too.

Well-informed, reliable sources close to Higbury House today (Tuesday 18 May 2010) said that Cesc Fàbregas has almost certainly made his last appearance for Arsenal. One well-placed source said it was “90% certain” he would be leaving us to return to his boyhood club FC Barcelona in the coming weeks.

There is a VERY small chance that he may yet be persuaded to stay, at least for one more season. With the Catalan giants putting the pressure on, telling him that this is his time, I personally doubt that we will see Cesc in the red and white again.

He is reported by Catalan journalist Guillem Balagué, a correspondent who has great sources and is not prone to bullshitting, to be meeting Arsčne Wenger this week to give the manager his final decision. I now believe that he will tell the manager, “Moltes gràcies. Jo vaig.“(Thanks very much. I’m off).

If that is his decision it will be a very sad day for Arsenal. I remember how I felt when Liam Brady decamped to Turin giants Juventus in the summer of 1980. Brady went on to spend the best seasons of his career in Italy, playing for La Vecchia Signora (where he won two consecutive Serie A scudetti in 1980/81 and 1981/2), Sampdoria and Internazionale (where he formed a sensational midfield/forward partnership with the great West German striker Karl-Heinz Rummenigge at the San Siro). After a short stay with Ascoli at the start of the 1986/7 season, he returned for a brief swansong with West Ham United before hanging up his boots.

I believe the loss of Fàbregas could represent the same level of setback which Brady’s departure in 1980 represented for the club. A very promising side had been built with a good blend of experience and youth with Brady at its heart and a very Irish green hue, the great Pat Jennings in goal, a back four of Sammy Nelson, Willie Young, David O’Leary and Pat Rice. Graham Rix, Brian Talbot and David Price in midfield with Liam Brady. Frank Stapleton was up front Alan Sunderland. There were good reserves in Steve Gatting, John Devine and goalie George Wood.

That side reached three consecutive FA Cup Finals, losing to Ipswich Town in 1978 (from whom we bought Brian Talbot), beating Manchester United in an unforgettable Wembley afternoon in 1979 and losing the West Ham United in 1980 after a marathon four game, three replay semi-final series with Liverpool. We also reached the European Cup Winners’ Cup Final in 1980, losing to Valencia on penalties after extra time in Brussels.

If Cesc does decide to up sticks and leave we don’t want to go backwards as we did after the departure of Brady then Frank Stapleton. I blogged several weeks ago that we need a plan B up our sleeve if Cesc does return to Catalonia. We need to extract the biggest possible transfer fee to employ in buying replacements. Neither Brady nor Stapleton were ever satisafactorily replaced. We need to have plan B in place whilst moving heaven and earth to keep Cesc if it’s at all possible.

Apparently it isn’t a matter of money. His total package at the moment is in the region of £6.4 million a season taking into account on-costs. He won’t do much better than that financially. Spain’s concessionary tax break for ex-patriots won’t apply to him as a Spanish national so he’ll be paying 43% in income tax, not much different to here in Britain (50%), although employees’ social security contributions are less (6.35%) as the employer pays far more than here (29.9%). With the fall in Sterling’s exchange rate against the Euro from close to €1.50 to around €1.10, British clubs have lost a competitive edge in player salaries compared to countries in the Euro zone.

Anyway cash is not the big issue apparently. Lack of success on the park is. Cesc has only won one medal in his time at Arsenal, our last. He lifted the 2005 FA Cup at Cardiff. He didn’t feature in the 2003/4 Invincibles campaign. Liam Brady’s haul of one FA Cup winners’ medal and a runners-up medal in Europe (Cesc played against Barcelona in Paris) is another uncanny parallel. Cesc has made 267 appearances for us, including 30 as a substitute, scoring 48 goals, since making his debut as our youngest ever player in the Carling Cup in October 2003 against Rotherham United at home (a record he has since lost to Jack Wilshere).

I hope his 267th appearance wasn’t his last for us. I fear that it was.

I’ll blog further on the consequences and where next for the club if the little Catalan wonder does leave tomorrow.

Keep the faith!

I cant believe this, if true we should demand at least £50m! And with that money, invest on a world class goalkeeper, world class defender, Arteta from Everton would be a great replacement for Cesc!

Please dont got Cesc, you are just going to sit on the bench!

Not even 2 weeks ago he said he wasn’t in a rush. Now he wants to leave? No! Just because the Spanish Press have said so, and Sky Sports News “understand” that he has told Wenger (who is apparently abroad by the way, does not make it so. Sky Sports News also “understood” that Arshavin was flying back to Russia, when in fact he was having his medical and signing for our club. The only source Sky have to go on are those puppets in the Spanish press, who would swear black was white if Barca or Real told them to. How many times had Vieira signed for Madrid? And all these “Wenger Out” twats want to take a minute and consider what this man has done for this club. He is a genius.

please stop saying if he will go he will sit on the bench because in all the way Arsenal captain is better than that for any team in the world I wish that cesc will stay but if he wants to go then let it be we will say goodbye to him and I will wish him luck in his personal life but not on his professional one no one is bigger than the club
BUT we need some world class players to replace what we have now (some of what we have)
if we are going to sell him I’m sure that AW will get the best out of him and if AW does not want him to go and see that this is not the right time for the club so sell Fab then he will not and that is why there is something called Contract so lets wait and see I hope that he will stay but if not then we should keep on supporting our great Arsenal and not the persons who are running the club

I will only be gutted worse when Wenger comes out and says we have the talent on the squad so we don’t need to replace Cesc.

    Quotes of the upcoming summer:
“No need to replace the goalies, Fabianski just needs confidence and games.”
“No need to replace Cesc, Nasri has always been meant for that role. It will also give a chance for the 18 year olds to get some experience. A big name signing would just hurt their progression.”

It should not come as a suprise the blatent tapping up from Barca and their players for the last two season’s has been a total disgrace. Man U lost Ronaldo and I for one feel thay are no where near as good a team without him, I cannot see an Arsenal player who can currently replace him and you would need to spend a significant amount of money on a player who is ready made with Cesc’s talent o turn a game on its head. The bottom line is Arsenal need to service our debt, sellin players does this the clubs business plan no longer takes the Champions league in to account for it budget accroding to Gazidas comments last season when we looked like we’d finish fifth or sixth until Villa blew out so I don’t think we’ll replace Cesc it will be down to Nasri and Arshevin to fill the gap. I do feel very very sick this evening! and as usual the biased Sky Sports lot are totally loving it!!

In the games he didn’t start he came on at half time and as Xavi isn’t getting any younger he will get quite alot of games. Don’t forget he still has about 10 years or more of his career left.

Brethren, I am damn tired of this annual will he/won’t he ho to barca debacle. The reason I love this club is arguably why many of our fans criticise the club: we can wheel in any unknown youngster and he will do a decent job, and even if we don’t win the trophies we are not far off either. When I played (yeah, with moderate success) that was my spirit. I never let the reputation of a player I was marking intimidate me — my attitude was always: ‘does he have 3 or 4 legs’? ‘Is he 15 foot tall’?

So, if Cesc wants out, by all means lets thank him for his services and let him go. I will throw a party that this annoying yearly situation will come to an end, and wish Cesc well and pray he does not warm the barca bench too much.

We should extract at least £50-60m for the deal, and go buy ourselves a couple of ready made (no prospects this time, please) world class play-makers.

    Possible targets:
kaka (value will be around the £30m mark)
    iniesta/xavi

Add another playmaker (arteta, milner, gourcouf) and decent defensive midfielder/centre back (yaya?) and another 7 foot CB and we are set to continue as if nothing had happened.

We are the mighty arsenal, and we are bigger than any one player. Cesc was a great servant of the club, so we thank you sooo much. But the beat must go on for the mighty arsenal, and the annual blackmail needs to end.

This is like a bad dream it really is, but if he wants to go then there’s no point in holding on to him. I am dissappointed by Cesc though don’t going around saying you’re happy and the next thing we know he’s asking for a transfer, the fans deserve more respect then that.

Also I am not sure we will sign a replacement Arshavin has always stated he wants a more central role and I think that is what he’ll get. Our midfield will probably be Arshavin-Toure(if part of the deal)- and Song.

Lastly for those calling for Wenger’s head, thank God you’re not in cahrge of the club, the last thing we need is to lose the manager along with our star player. A new manager will require funds to build a new team which clearly we do not have, and then we’re back to same dicussion of the new guy not being good enough. The fact is the new stadium took up a lot of funds but it had to be built to ensure the team will be able to compete in the long term. one only needs to look at Liverpool and the more extreme example of Charlton to see where the club could find itself without proper planning.

I’m afraid I’m not in a position to be more explicit about my sources. I promised them confidentiality. I’ll only say that I HATE transfer rumours. I honestly believe my sources are relaying accurate information. All of them would love Cesc to stay but doubt there’s any real chance that he will.

Those who read my blogs regularly will know that I’m on the sceptical side when it comes to the board’s intentions. I am worried that they’re putting their own interests above those of the club. That said a real good way to damage Arsenal as a business is to let great players like Cesc leave.

I honestly believe he’s made his mind up to go home. Whist the most irritating aspect of Barcelona, a club and an institution I generally admire, is its contant tapping up of players, I don’t think this is a case of them unsettling him, more Cesc’s own decision to go home.

I hope so, so much that the word I’m getting is wrong. I won’t give a monkey’s if I’m ridiculed if Cesc announces he’s staying. His continued presence at Arsenal will be more than enough for me.

I fear we’ve seen the last of him in Arsenal colours though.

Well-done for pursuing with the likes of Abou “brains” Diaby & Denilson & rubbish goalkeepers who are either good blokes in the dressing room…(MA)…or look pretty between the posts…(LF)…or are French or West African.

Well-done for letting Flamini & Hleb go in 2008!
Well-done for using the transfer windows so well(particularly in Jan 2010)
Well-done for preparing tactics so well in the big games, especially in the last 2 seasons.

Spending big isn’t the same as spending wisely. I’m all for splashing the cash on both transfer fees and wages for the right players. I’m against spending money a) we haven’t got or b) for the sake of spending it.

The trouble with british players is that they are over priced (and will be even more so with home grown rules) and the current generation are not as technically gifted as their european and south american peers.

Hopefully the next generation of british players at arsenal will have the technical ability as well as the loyalty to arsenal.

Well I really did not see this coming. Of course we all knew he’d go to Barca eventually, but I thought it would be next summer at the earliest. The whole things poses a lot of questions. Will Barca stump up the cash needed? 30 million is an absolute joke for a team that paid €69 for Zlatan. Cesc is 23 years old, meaning his best years are ahead of him and his re-sale value in the future will still be high for the next 5 years. In short, Barca can cough up or piss off.

As for Cesc, well his desire to move is ultimately understandable. He feels about Barca the way we feel about Arsenal. Barca are winning trophies right now, Arsenal are not and do not look like they will without serious investment in new players. I very much doubt Cesc trusts Wenger to buy the required players after the past 5 years. Playing against Barca at the Emirates and witnessing first hand the enormous difference between us and them may have been a turning point for Cesc. He won’t be a first choice player for them, but Iniesta is very injury prone and Xavi will need a rest. Cesc will get enough games and a lot of trophies.

Where do we go from here? Well we won’t find a direct replacement for Cesc. They are all at Barca and won’t be moving to us. It will require a different team, and a different style. I’m not convinced that’s a bad thing. Cesc thrived in the 4-3-3, but not too many others did. Ask Sagna and Clichy what they think of 4-3-3 and the reply will not be very positive. It left us too exposed at the back. A return to the 4-4-2 of 2003/2004 may work out, with solidity in the middle (Song and Toure perhaps?) and creativity from the wings.

Cesc is a great player, but ultimately he’s won nothing for us. It’s sad, but nothing compared to the day Vieira left. I was depressed for about a year after that.

There was life before cesc, ther will be life after him. I for 1 wish him well, in the main he has played his heart out and in my opinion has been let down by either the board or AW who-ever controls the purse strings, average beside quality dosent mix, so y should he stick around for another year with average players and MAYBE get a trophy, for the 1st time in 5 years. All this and still no sign of quality players coming in, i seem to remember AW saying we would only sign quality players for 3 years now only then to say when the window closes that there was no quality players avialable, e cant get them all on free transfers, and it wudn surprise me if that 1 went tits up over money(wages).

I think this is the final straw.Arsenal’s lack of siccess is the cause. Anyone in his shoes would love to go to a club challenging for honours.
Arsene better get it right this coming season meaning he better plug the problem areas.Failure to do so would be the trigger for more players wanting to leave.

Keith, are you a spurs fan having a giggle? I can half understand where your coming from saying we need to replace the big guns when they go, with “Arshavin-like” signings. But then you go and say stupid things like get rid of Wenger and buy Torres! A lot has been said about Wenger being a victim of his own success and it’s definitely true. And Torres is said to cost £70m – we already have RVP who also suffers from a terrible injury record.

And to the other “fans”, who say Cesc won’t get in the Barca team, are you sure?!?! He certainly wasn’t just the 12th best player on the pitch in the first leg, and will undoubtedly be the future of Barca alongside Messi and Pique.

Fingers crossed Wenger persuades him to stay for a bit longer with the promise of some big (but realistic!) signings in the summer.

    Agree with “omm”.

Bordeaux president doesnt like Arsenal very much.

But Gourcuff is the only real replacement for Cesc.

In my opinion he´s better and is the same age.

I know Arsene never paid more than 16m for a player. But maybe Gourcuff could be the first considering that in no more than 3 years Real Madrid, Inter etc will come to offer more than 50m for him.

For some reason I can see wenger replacing fabregas with no one I firmly believe this I would put good money on it. He’ll probably move nasri, wilshere or even henri lansbury…..

Lets face the facts, Cesc is going to go, this year probably, maybe next. What we’ve got to do is get the maximum amount of cash out of the deal – not like what we did with Henry.
To be honest, I’m not convinced that he’s the player that the media has hyped him to be, I’d much rather see him go and get the flamster back.

i think wenger has always known cesc was leaving this summer and he was fast tracking Ramsey to take over from him, lets face it, Ramsey was doing just fine scoring goals and giving decisive passes, but the injury spoilt all wengers plans as there is now a gap between when cesc goes and when ramsey comes back to match fittness, i trust wenger had it all covered up cos he is not stupid, he loves the club more than me and you.
