Chamakh’s a Gooner, but how will he fit in?

chamakh

by JOSH BEDNASH In a week in which Cesc Fabregas’ future at Arsenal is beginning to look increasingly more uncertain, the finalisation of Marouane Chamakh’s inevitable move from Bordeaux may well go largely unnoticed. Months of speculation, exchanging of comments between the two clubs and careful insinuations from the player have resulted in a lengthy and often tedious saga of will he won’t he, and that it’s climax is set to arrive with the triggering of the Bosman ruling, one may be forgiven for not paying Arsenal’s first signing of the season that much notice. However, Marouane Chamakh’s arrival could prove to be a key signing in the months and seasons ahead, as he may well provide Arsene Wenger with a variety of extra dimensions to a style of play that has become predictable and worse still, fruitless.

Although Chamakh won’t arrive with a huge reputation and price-tag, as will be the goings-on at Eastlands this summer, he has all the promise of being an immediate hit at the Emirates. Not only does he possesses some welcome characteristics typical of a Wenger purchase, but refreshingly, he seems to offer something different, a third dimension to our often 2D play. Signing a player for pittance from the French League 1 is not uncharacteristic of a Wenger purchase, the majority of which have been unbelievable success stories in North London, yet this time he has gone for something different. Marouane Chamakh is a tall lad, 6 ft. 2 to be precise, and although indeed Nicklas Bendtner offers an adequate physical threat and old-fashioned target man outlet, his form has been sporadic throughout the last couple of seasons in which he has had enough chances to stake a claim to be Wenger’s first choice centre-forward. Although having redeemed himself, along with Eboue, from being a much maligned figure amongst the Arsenal faithful with a handful of crucial goals last season, he continues to underline the fan’s worries with regular poor touches, a lack of pace and erratic finishing. Chamakh seems to be a more refined player, with a delightful touch, clever link up play and a mature footballing brain. His goal scoring ability further proves his worth, and although 31 goals in two seasons isn’t a barnstorming total, his goals have accompanied Bordeaux’s gradual rise through the European ranks, helping them to first a Ligue 1 title and then a Champions League Quarter-Final.

Whether Chamakh will immediately slot into Arsene’s starting line-up is another debate entirely. Robin Van-Persie is unquestionably Wenger’s first choice centre forward in the 4-3-3 formation he now favours above the 4-4-2 utilised throughout much of the glory years of 1998, 2002 and 2004. Van-Persie is maturing into a world class striker, and it would be self-suicide to muse as to how our season may have ended had he not damaged ankle ligaments in November. His opening to the season, and indeed end was fantastic, slotting into the central role of Wenger’s attacking triumvirate as well as anyone could have hoped. Nevertheless, injuries continue to be a concern with him, and if Chamakh neither starts nor is deployed as either a second striker or winger, it seems he will provide apt cover if Van-Persie should fall ill to an untimely injury once again.

As for the players Chamakh will be leapfrogging in the Arsenal pecking order, his arrival may induce the unfortunate exit of Eduardo, and continued alienation of Carlos Vela. Both have been disappointing this season, but in the case of Eduardo, his demise has been unpleasant to witness. Since his horrific leg-break in 2008, all the attributes which helped him to score a succession of ‘striker’s-goals’ that season have since vanished. His anticipation, pace, finishing and, almost inevitably, bravery have all gone, leaving him an isolated and impotent figure in a tragic turn of fortunes. Although his potential departure will break most Arsenal fan’s hearts, Chamakh will step into his place, hungry to prove his worth in a demanding and scintillating division; ‘At Bordeaux I was the club’s child. At Arsenal, I won’t be a kid anymore. I have grown, I have things to prove and I am motivated to achieve it.’

His power, strength and all-round impressive hold up play will provide an interesting variety to Arsenal’s intricate passing triangles and he will be a much-welcomed physical presence amongst a group of dainty and lightweight attacking players. His aerial prowess will also tick this box, as he boats a brilliant record of headed goals, scoring 9 in the 08/09 campaign, more than any other European player, and notably a further two in each leg of this year’s Champions League Quarter final. It is no secret Arsenal pose little aerial threat, scoring very few headers, a sum not helped by the worst cross success rate in the Premiership, and often wasting corners. Chamakh’s arrival may well be the perfect antidote to this, and his ability to offer Arsenal with a variety of attacking options may well lead to him staking an impressive claim to a starting place next season.

What a wastle of space this player is so much hype but what has he actually done. Scored 11 goals all season? Highly overated, but on a free thats probably exactly how much he is worth… Nothing!!! He will show some promise in the begining then fade away like the Eduardo, £10m waste of money. Fabregas leaving shows exactly there is no desire of wainning anything here…

sweet lord, no-one was singing the praises of Vieira or Pires before they arrived, but they turned out alright… i think his size, pace, heading ability he could be a new Torres.
He might not be razor sharp on finishing just yet but neither was Henry, now he was an alright player wasn’t he?

In france the top scorer only managed 17 goals i think. France isn’t a particularly high scoring league unlike spain and england and holland. Bordeaux is a pretty defensive team as well. According to espn (i don’t know how up to date their stats are) he has only had about 45 shots all season compared to messi and ronaldo who have had over 200 each. I wouldn’t be surprised if he scores lots with the amount of chances arsenal create. I was looking forward to seeing him team up with Cesc…

Chamakh as the article quite clearly stated is here for more than scoring goals.

He is here for cover for RVP or to add something we all crave. No striker that holds up the ball well or has a good header scores lots of goals, bar maybe Rooney.

The Cesc saga has taken a more positive twist today, and a keeper must be on the cards.

    COME ON THE GUNNERS

He’s free and will be a squad player to start, he seemed to score whenever I watched the champions league highlights, one thing Wenger does get right is forwards so fingers crossed he’ll make an imediate impact. Think this may mean Eddie goes as well just never the same after the horrific injury.

Cesc is gone, its the usual stuff that is happening. Reminds me of Ade saga! Come get me qoute, all thats left is fee to be agreed…we aint selling him…Im staying…We wont him but he is an arsenal player etc… It will drag on for a week or so and then he will be in a barca shirt! Best to look to the future signing now!

Joe Cole could be an ideal replacement!
But think Arteta is the best option, he is in the mold of Cesc, only thing is he would probably shine with us for 2 seasons and then madrid or barca rob him! Buy english, safer bet…Milner maybe!

Pool and Spurs both wanted his services. We aint expecting the world from this kid. He was a free remember and (for me)will be so welcome at The Emirates just because he can head a f’kin ball.

Joe Cole is a very good shout.

The chance of first team football is sure to be a factor that would turn his head our way. However, he would possibly need a pay cut and is injury prone. Same for Arteta.

Ireland would be good for us as well.

Ok, just one thing, to the many people who argue “He cant be good if he’s free, how comes other big teams haven’t gone for him”

Why did no big teams go for Patrick Viera when we got him for 3.5 million, why did no big teams go for Anelka 500k, why did no teams go for Kolo Toure, Fabregas,Petit, Pires… The list goes on….

Because Wenger looks for potential you twats…thats why hes signed a player on a free, did people think seriously that players like Drogba, Henry and Ronaldo would take the premier league by storm when they first joined…. I cant remember that being the case. Give the guy a chance before you start slagging him and Wenger off you impatient inglorious bastards…

Chamakattack has had more exposure than people like Vieira, Henry, Pires got. This isn’t to say those players were not unknown as talented players’ names do the rounds. So I’d say Chamakh isn’t so highly wanted worldwide but caused interest. Hopefully he will fit in more to Arsenal than any other club and from what I’ve seen getting him on a free is a good deal. I think I’d like to see a partner for RVP and maybe revert to a 442. Depends on what else we buy.

In an ideal world, I’d try replacing Cesc with Steve Gerrard. I repeat, in an ideal world …

JimC great blog as always mate,
With some Insiders, I just wonder if the highlight of their existence is to make a totally asinine public comment which tends to indicate that their IQ rating match the length of their penis in centimetres.

    Anyway that observation aside,

I predict that Chamakh will have the same impact at Arsenal as Thomas Vermaelen. Those (including myself) who have followed his progress after his link with the club will not have seen the best in terms of goal scoring, but his performances for Bordeaux during the Champions league showed his ability to make moves off the ball which were not only intuitive to the highest degree, but the timing of his runs especially were sublime.

He was not aided by having quality midfielders behind him who could read the flow of the game and provide the service that he will get at Arsenal.

That having been said, I hope Aaron Ramsey will be fit enough to play at the start of the new season, otherwise with Fabregas departing, there is absolutely no-one left at Arsenal who can make those incisive passes. His aerial ability is better than Cahill of Everton or Torres or Rooney. So I am looking forward to seein the return of the 4-42 with van Persie and Chamakh as our combined strike force.

People who said that he sucks because he dont score many goals are just idiots.

Henry didnt score so many goal in France or Italy and then in England you know the rest of the story.

In the opposite way, Eduardo scored hundreds of goals in Croatia and in England he kinda sucks.

The magic of Arsene is that he find the players who can really fit in our team and he make them play better than somewhere else.

Its very rare the case of some guy coming and sucking here. But its very usual that the guys who shine here when they leave they sucks.

Even that VanPersie was great as a central striker I think someone with that talent should play some steps back. It will be perfect if we play like this:
    Arshavin – - – Chamakh – - – Van Persie
    (Vela) – - – (Bendtner) – - – (Walcott)
