The clubman: a slowly dying breed at Arsenal

tony-adams

by JAMES CURTIS The years came rolling back to me over the weekend, when Arsene Wenger stepped out with Marouane Chamakh for a photo shoot. Posing with the Moroccan at his official signing, Wenger had chosen to wear a dark mustard half-pullover, half-polo combination thing. Had Chamakh’s gran come to support him? It really was a blast from the early Nineties. It was also the sort of cheesy fashion Wenger brought with him when he first joined the club, and for just a moment amid all the hysteria of the past week, I was able to dwell on some much needed blissful nostalgia.

Was Wenger trying to send out a subliminal message to calm the Gooner nation? Was the stunt purposely set up to bring back memories of the early Wenger years when Arsenal were winning league and cup doubles? Perhaps Mrs Professeur was having a wardrobe sort out. Or, maybe Wenger was just conscious of the weekend heat-wave and chose to wear something comfortable despite its horrific colour. Either way, it gave me a small lift in-between all the other heat being generated about the future of Cesc Fabregas.

More likely, the mustard sweater was a sign of an aging Wenger. Next he will be jumping out of his dug-out seat with his arms extended and clapping like a monkey with a cymbal like that senile old man down at Old Trafford. Whichever way I looked at it though, one thing played on my mind: Wenger has undoubtedly given his life to Arsenal since his arrival in 1996. He came during the Eighties hangover, a time of hideous fashion and is still here bringing it back all these years later. It’s far more than can be said of the modern footballer.

What happened to the clubman generation? Where have the Tony Adams’ of this world got to? As Wenger remains loyal to the club preparing to go loggerheads with the critics once again in September, others around him look likely to leave. Can we say Wenger, backed up by a small trusted troop in the shape of Pat Rice and Steve Bould, are the last of their kind, those whose allegiance is to Arsenal first and to themselves second?

On Cesc, I guess you could say it’s an unfortunate case of our best player happening to be from the most colourful team in world football right now. Robin van Persie fits into the same bracket at Arsenal but you don’t see him thirsting to play for Feyenoord. It’s understandable that Fabregas would want to go and play with his mates under the guidance of a childhood hero.

Things are different now to when Wenger first came to Arsenal. Since the defence of Bould, Adams, Lee Dixon, Nigel Winterburn Martin Keown and David Seaman broke up, who can we say slots into the same legendry category? Keown was the last to leave in 2004, and following him there is only Ray Parlour, Patrick Vieira, Dennis Bergkamp and Thierry Henry who make the grade.

Let’s break it down:

Tony Adams 1983 – 2002 (504 appearances)

Cesc Fabregas 2003 – ?? (187)

Firstly, we first have to distinguish what makes somebody a clubman? Goals and appearance will of course score highly, but the time spent playing for one club might count for more because it is this stat which proves loyalty and duty. Substitute appearances should also score well; being relied upon for whatever role in whatever game. I’ll be so bold as to speak for the rest of us and say these players are more often cherished by the fans.

How does the table change when we put this list in order of years spent at the club?

Tony Adams 1983 – 2002 (19 years)

Cesc Fabregas 2003 – ?? (7)

Of course we have to take into consideration a few other factors. Dennis Bergkamp had to ply his trade in his homeland before making the move to the Premiership – It’s easier for a local boy to join the Arsenal ranks early and remain there. Perhaps that’s why the Dutch Iceman falls comfortably into a net with the likes of Adams, both finishing their footballing days at Arsenal.

Along the way you get special idols whose style and character inspire an era, and so we can add to the list the likes of Robert Pires (189 games) and Freddie Ljungberg (216). Need I say Thierry? Overall though, it’s obvious the days of the clubman are coming towards an end at Arsenal, when we look to the bottom of the list and notice it’s those who are active well into the Twenty-First Century.

It’s ironic that while Wenger is the cornerstone of dependability, his own odours of devotion are not being smelt by those he nurtures today. Do we lay blame on Wenger then if Cesc leaves for a European rival, just like Hleb and Flamini before him? Has he only himself to blame by not giving a chance to the next Tony Adams or the next Ray Parlour, instead dusting the way for France’s new talent? All of a sudden it doesn’t seem so easy for “a local boy to join the Arsenal ranks early and remain there.”

The global pull and the steady growth of foreign players across all the leagues is certainly a major contributor. Take a look at Inter Milan and see that even in Italy, the pinnacle of progressing domestic talent first, attitudes are changing. In this year’s Champions League Final not one Italian player was named in Jose Mourinho’s starting line-up and for other Serie A teams to meet the same success they will have to follow suit.

For some, money talks and there will always be clubs ready to accept the billions of oil-rich barons and the slick upper crust of world aristocracy.  Subsequently, more players will grab the chance to earn big money and shall be known as ‘hoppers’. If Cesc leaves, do we turn a blind eye to his stoic attitude and enormous amount of work put in this season? Should he be forgotten as a legend? It’s difficult to say, but perhaps we should just try and be less surprised next time: as the clubman is dying out, the fashion of the Nineties in all its mustard vogue has been resurrected.

I am angry that Cesc want’s to go. What the freak, people keep saying they understand and who can blame him. Maybe he doesn’t owe us antying but we sure dont’ owe him anything. Maybe he’s done alot for us but we’ve done far more for him. At 23, he turns his back on the club that made him!! And people can understand this because he wants to win, because he’s too good for us?! Freak no! No player is too good for Arsenal, but fair enough let’s say he’s too good for us. How can he at 23 leave this club to end his football days at Barcelona?! He can stay for 1-2 more years and still give his best years to that freaking club in Spain. He knows that for 4 out these past 5 years we haven’t had a realistic chance of winning anything as had to stop spending. So yea, this last season we had money adn Wenger messed up, but Cesc can’t give Wenger and Arsenal more than one realistic chance of winning anything before he at 23 (!!!) want to leave us for Barcelona?!
I will blame him if he leaves.

I think you need to edit the first list – it suggests that Thierry was with us for 17 years. If only!

I think that the next crop of players to come through will be clubmen as you call them. Jack Wilshire, Henri Landsbury, JET, Gibbs, etc. They won’t leave us for other clubs for two reasons.

    1) I believe we will be winning trophies again
    2) They will be Gooners, and already home.

I believe this is something we had to go through to get to where we want to go. It is simply not possible that we could of stayed this competitive, enjoyable to watch, and in the financial situation we are in had we signed or moved up English players.

It is always going to be unlikely that a French or Spanish lad will be 100% loyal to an English club. Would you be to a Spanish or French club? Man U couldn’t keep Ronaldo and had won 3 back to back titles and paid him extortionate money. However, they have kept, Giggs, Scholes, and Nevile.

The whole point of the youth set up is to have loyal players who love the club. The team that keeps the seat warm while the others progress is the one we currently have.

Also its easier to be ‘clubmen’ if the team you’re in is winning trophies. Our players weren’t linked with other clubs as much when we were winning stuff than they are now and if we were winning then they would probably be happier to stay. Likewise man u players rarely get linked with other clubs.

That’s it db 10. The list goes on and on. The next crop has played together for 8 years or so. Plus most are local lads that may have followed another club at 9 or 10 but if you have played for Arsenal since 9 years old and make the first team at 20 surely it would take a lot to make you want to leave.

There’s very simple economics behind this:

Moving to a new area (especially a new country) involves a lot of costs (monetary and non-monetary). Therefore, for a player on £6k per week, it’s not necessarily worth moving to Italy for £8k a week. The costs could absorb the extra £2k per week.

However, for a player earning £60k per week, it is worth moving to a new place for £80k a week. The costs of moving (a new house, etc.) are relatively smaller, given the large capital they have. They will have enough money to smooth over the bumps.

Therefore, the more money there is in football, the more that players move clubs – because the costs they face are *relatively* smaller.

This is the crux of the matter – not “loyalty”. As biographies such as Perry Groves’ and Tony Adams’ show – players used to attempt to be just as demanding from their clubs and modern players are. How many of the old, “loyal” players would have turned down a move to Barcelona, an improved chance to win the European Cup, and a £20k+ weekly boost in wages?

Where on earth Is David Seaman? All season we have cried out for a David Seaman.
I would agree that Mr Wenger great weakness, is the 30 odd thingy. If Gilberto had been kept on as captain for an emergency, Gallas would not have been made captain! Arsenal did lack the critical senior pro to show pride and above all fight in the jungles of “Bigot” Sam Allardyce and his side-kicks!

Cesc can not be mentioned alongside Bergkamp, Adams and Bould yet…certainly not. If he leaves now he is a traitor simple as that. Then it is true the stories about him going behind Wenger and Arsenals back. Then he certainly deserves boos and no heros welcome. Making agreements behind the back of Arsenal, talking to media before the club…that is total direspect and disregard for a club and all the people who have given him the chance Barca did not…and even for a captain to do so!!. In the beggining of Laportas reign he even diiregarded Cesc saying that any player leaving Barca is not welcome back. Though…it is not a basis to make assumptions yet, all is loose speculation. When it comes to the clubman, Van Persie, Berkamp and Ljungberg prove even foreigners can be

Yeah yeah, we know, according to you, you were gonna finish above us for the last century and it still hasn’t happened. Give me a fucking break. We hear the same shit every year. “I swear, please believe us, I know we havent won the premier league since the 60′s, but were gonna do it this year.” At least you spurs are realistic with your goals: “Since we cant finish first to save our lives, lets bash Arsenal for having all the success we wish we had”.

Fabregas no longer has a mentor in the team. As a result, he wont improve too much. If he goes to Barcelona, he has Iniesta, Xavi, and Messi to help him develop.

It’s the new problem at Arsenal. Wenger is still a good judge of talent but there is no mentorship program. When Vieira came in, he had Petit, Adams, and Keown showing him how to win things. When Henry came in he had the likes of Parlour, Bergkamp, Adams, and even Kanu. What purpose do these guys serve?

They say to the new young guys, “hey young scrap, you play pretty football but this is how you win trophies. This how you win a double. This is how you go unbeaten over an entire season.

The mentorship program at Arsenal is jaded. Wenger’s based potential success on his principles and talent, alone. The reality is nearly everyone, when they get a new job, learns more from their peers (experienced colleagues) than they do their boss. The downside is there’s no one there to teach the young guns how to become champions.

Very good stuff Josh. Edu, Gilberto, Wiltord were all good influences too.

yes but even those two stayed long enough to become arsenal legends. And now it seems that our whole squad is being linked with transfers. Clichy, Sagna, Cesc, Eduardo, Arshavin, Rvp…etc.
