The Grove’s Missing Thousands – Where Are They?

gun__1227691914_gazidis_ivan1

Little solid Arsenal news in the last few days, only confirmation that Fran Mérida has left us for Atlético Madrid. Mérida didn’t get many first team chances but those he did he failed to really capitalise on. I wish the lad good luck at his new club.

Today I thought I’d have a look at the continued mystery of the missing thousands at the Grove. It’s difficult to estimate but at any match, even the biggest there are several hundred empty seats. This can grow to several thousand for less glamorous fixtures.

I’m assuming that the club isn’t telling little porkies when it announces a pre-match sell-out for almost all games since we moved to the Grove. What possible motivation could the club have to lie about that? Which brings us to where are they?

Some will be seats taken up by provincial and overseas supporters’ clubs that they haven’t managed to sell on to their members. I assume they’re stuck with the cost of these tickets. Some will be season ticket holders who can’t or don’t want to turn up for whatever reason and haven’t been able to “move” their ticket to a friend or family member, haven’t been able to move their seat on the Ticket Exchange to a Silver or Red member, or can’t be arsed. There will also be the odd matchday ticket holder who can’t plot up for some reason and can’t/hasn’t given/sold their seat to somebody else.

I think this whole area needs a thorough look. Ivan Gazidis apparently agrees. He said at the recent AST meeting that he feels “silly” announcing a sixty thousand plus crowd when there are clearly so many empty seats.

On Friday I’ll look at what might be some solutions to this problem.

Keep the faith!

My dad ended up watching some of the Fulham game on the tv’s inside the stadium (he was late and didn’t want to bother those already seated). he said that loads of people were in the concourses, getting a drink/food etc. This may explain a few empty seats

This is Arsenal the modern super-club.

They wanted to treat the supporters like customers, and hey guess what?

    We now act like customers.

The players show no loyalty so it is no big surprise that a lot of supporters make less effort.

Who can blame supporters when they sit through matches in all weather only to get a wave from Eboue at the end.

You get back back what you give, and at the moment Arsenal football club and the players give fans very, very little in terms of appreciation for our support.

It is obvious that ALL clubs want to sell SEASON tickets. With a season ticket sold, the club does not care if Somebody or nobody sits in that particular season seat at any match.
With the additional staff one would hope that some of the IOUs have been converted into £, €, $ or whatever for Arsene to Flash the Cash.
Otherwise the season tickets upcoming sale could be diverted the Arsenal Football plc way, for Arsene to Flash the Cash.
If the seat has been sold, that is what the attendance figure should state, and not if there is no “arse”al in the seat!

Vic, I think there are many things that contribute to this. With the internet it’s so easy to buy and sell tickets at a silly price. You get the impression those with an eye for turning season tickets into a profit caught the worm … early! It wasn’t so easy at Highbury because of the size of the stadium and demand from the real supporters was high.

I think this is evident when any club expands. The Emirates had a big capacity and perhaps there aren’t as many hardcore Arsenal fans as we think …

… There are fans (those who stick up for the club but never attend), supporters (who financially support the club buying merchadise and pick and chose games they go to). These people buy them off the touts or contacts!

Then there is the hardcore who attend every match. You notice they are real on away days!

The other things is when the team are not playing well those fans and supporters would rather save their money and watch it in the comfort of their home. And to be honest, I can’t blame them!

Still, second highest average attendance in the country isn’t bad. I’d rather it crept over rather than under 60,000 though.

An example then: I bought tickets off one guy this year who produced about 8 season tickets from his pocket and said pick three. How does he have these in his possession? I have friends who bought silver memberships too and don’t always go.

On the last day of the season I was offered three tickets for Fulham. I was owed £50 from one friend for a Porto ticket but stil turned him down and went to watch Dagenham away at Darlington instead. Less expensive and better performance from the players in League Two than the ones i had witnessed at home to Man City the week before.

There are indeed many fans who stay in the club level area and concourses but clearly there are a high no of arsenal fans who it seems can afford to not turn up on a fairly regular basis. It seems so many people have more money than sense.

Cesc on video confirming the conversation he had with AW and saying “no” when asked if he can guarantee that he’ll be at Arsenal next season:

More bullshit from Fabregas, of course it’s in his hands.

He has a contract with Arsenal, if he had an ounce of integrity he would honour that contract but, like so many other players he’s really only interested in his own bank account.

His “love” for Arsenal, his “respect” for Wenger and for the fans has disappeared like a snowflake on a hot barbecue.

Note to Gazidis, offer him to Real and Inter see if you can start an auction.

The sooner he goes the better.

There has been some debate of this within AISA too, and I recall it being said that the club does announce the number of tickets sold, not the number who turn up. The difference can be as much as 3% of people not turning up.

As I understand it, the selling on service for those with tickets only clicks in after all the tickets are sold, and in games against Blackburn etc this can be only a matter of days before the game itself – so effectively for those with seasons who can’t come there is no official selling on.

If I can put in my own situation as an example I think it might explain a little.

I live in the Midlands, and my partner lives in Cardiff, so for both of us, getting to and from games is a problem. We are both getting on, and have responsibilities to parents, children and grandchildren, and all can interfere with getting to a game. Some may feel that Arsenal is more important than attending a four year old’s birthday party – its a decision.

My partner also can’t ever make midweek games from Cardiff – and I have on several occasions been left with a spare ticket. The reason generally is I have offered it to someone who has assured me that he has desperately wanted to see Arsenal, but can’t get a ticket, or can’t afford one.

I offer mine, and say, ok you are unemployed, don’t even think of paying. Be my guest.

Wonderful, he cries, and doesn’t show.

There are many reasons. I missed one home game this last year – Hull – because when I came to leave home there were already notices saying that there were unlikely to be trains back, because of the snow.

Life is complex – 2% or 3% now showing is not bad. Compare with other clubs – they have much the same situation.

I’ve been told that everyone gets counted who goes through the door, the stewards, the officials even the f*cking goonersaurus. I don’t know why but i’ve got a real irrational hatred for the big green fella. In fairness he’s never done anything to deserve it apart from being a symbol that has nothing to do with the club.

    Vic,

I have been involved with the US supporters club. They do not foot the bill for people not turning up to the game.

it has to be easier for people to get tickets, the club should do more to encourage people to get the ticket into the hands off the supporters, empty seats are heartbreaking, these ticket companies are charging an arm and a leg, club should demand that tickets not being used on a regular basics are put back on sale.

Bollox Harper, the guy has given us brilliant service, he says he loves us and you’re a mug if you can’t see it. i hope he stays, if he goes good luck to him. he’s honouring his contract, he understands and accepts that if we don’t want to sell him he stays an arsenal player, why shouldn’t he want to move to the best club in the world if they really want him. Barca are better than us,simple as.

our ticket exchange scheme sucks, the club take 10% and then keep your money against the season ticket price the next year what a rip off. The touts whereas give you at least an extra 10% on top of your ticket and sometimes 500% and give you it straight away. The club want to get rid of the touts but they are more genorous than the club who are the real crooks.
