Bearded mystery player turns out for Spain

worldcupdiary

Spain 2-0 Honduras

Who was that bearded fellow? The one who came on as a substitute for Spain last night? He sure looked good and Vincent Del Bosque has done a fine job of keeping him a secret. Wait, what’s that you say? It was Cesc Fabregas? Fuck me, there’s a surprise.

Why do Spain persist in playing Sergio Busquets and Xavi Alonso? Both are more holding that attacking, so what’s the point of fumbling around with these two together, dawning with a defensive coat, when the Spanish know full well they will have all the possession. Or is this their guarantee to keeping the ball?

With their list of acclaimed stars though dropping Busquets would hardly matter. If you have the ball then you’re not defending, especially against Switzerland and Honduras. OK, they might be practising for tougher opponents later in the tournament when defending becomes a bigger reality, although it’s hardly the fully-fledged superego of European champions just two years ago.

Xavi Herndandez and Andres Iniesta: great players, easy on the eye. We are bombarded with how good they are by soft pundits who come over all awestruck and boyish, whenever they get the job to follow a Barcelona or Spain game. It’s so overwhelming at times they overlook the bad points to their football, as happened during the 1-0 loss to Switzerland. While the favourites to win the World Cup struggled, the pundits were still drooling over Xavi and Iniesta posters.

So what are their downfalls? Against the Swiss it was noticeable, that for all their excellent possession, the Barcelona bookends rarely ventured into the penalty area. They love to play in that arc around the edge of the box, as if there’s some invisible electric force field preventing them from crossing the line.

Cesc breaks these rules. He dares to touch the electric fence. He realises that he can move beyond it and cause havoc in the opposition area. Many of his goals come from sifting into tricky positions. It hadn’t taken five minutes last night and Cesc was gliding around the goalkeeper with a view of goal. Only an admirable sliding block prevented his big entrance being perfect.

If Fabregas had been involved in the first game, his nose for danger could have been just what Spain needed to score. He was forgotten about, and then left out again last night even though two changes had been made to the side. Alright, Spain won, although Honduras are right down the bottom in terms of competition.

Still, Spain face an extremely attacking Chile side next, who have raised eyebrows at this tournament. It’s certain then that Del Bosque will stick with Busquets and be cautious. If he hadn’t in the first place Spain might have already qualified. Instead they haven’t and it could all come down to goal difference if Switzerland and Spain both win. David Villa’s penalty miss last night could thus prove to be a defining moment then. Cesc can also take good penalties, and he does it with a broken leg!

Looking at Cesc through the eyes of the Spanish coach, Cesc IS a substitute for Xavi. No more and no less.
I believe you overlook the defence of Switzerland in the Spanish game. The object of the Swiss, was to keep the Spanish forwards out of the danger area. How many goals do the Spanish first XI, score from outside of the box? Very, very few. It is tiki taka at the highest level, aka Arsene Wenger style. Nota Bene: How come Senderos injured himself, too clumsy? Cesc is a replacement for Xavi, who is 30 years of age.
With Arsene in South Africa or is it Bafana now, I am sure he is in touch with Cesc, monitoring performance, morale and “seny”.

Yeah I should give more credit to the Swiss, but nothing stops a player from getting in the box. Xavi and Iniesta are not exactly on reigns. I think one of them needed to get in the penalty area where it is most dangerous to tackle. They didn’t. Cesc likes to!

Yup, that was class to see Pique so messy. I love how he got his innitial plaster after the Swiss raped and pilaged (spelling) on route to their goal.

Cesc got more goals last season than xavi, iniesta, xavi alonso and busquets combined. i really dont see why people think xavi is better than cesc. look on soccernet for stats. cesc had 23 goals and 19 assists in 41 games.xavi had 6 goals & 19 assists in 57 games. while xavi’s stats are impressive, cesc’s are just unreal. much more drive going forward in my opinion. xavi slows down the play too much

Did I watch the same match as everyone else or did I forget to wear my rose tinted spectacles.

Fabregas came on as a sub, missed the one scoring chance he got and looked decidedly rusty as well as hairy.

In fact he looked just what he is in the Spanish side, a bench sitter, even with Iniesta injured he didn’t get to start the game.

His stats with Arsenal are good but that’s because he is our best player. Xavi is a class above Fabregas and doesn’t need to get into the box as Barca have strikers who do that on a regular basis.

His future at Barcelona, if he goes, will be as an understudy to Xavi for the next two seasons and if he sticks it out there he may get a look in around 2012/13.

With four Arsenal defenders in the French team, the results confir the fact that Arsenal FC have a deep seated defensive problem. Gallas obviously should not have been playing in the World Cup in South Africa. With Sagna, Clichy and Diaby still with Arsene, I trust at least will be moved on quickly! As Real Madrid is now €650 millions of Euros in debt and FC Barcelona €400 + millions of Euros in debt. But Heigh! Messi €100, Xavi €50, Iniesta €50, et al, millions of Euros, where is the debt?

Oh, one more thing about Fabregas, if he keeps growing the beard by the time he gets to play for Barca’s first team in 2012 he’ll be a dead ringer for Osama Bin Laden.

its a good thing that Cesc isn’t playing that much because hopefully it will give him more time to recover from his broken leg properly. I am now convinced that he will be an arsenal player next season.

I am slightly worried about the form of some of our players at the world cup. Diaby, although he played quite well in the first game was anonymous in the second and made mistakes (although minor ones) in the build up to both RSA’s goals. Also clichy was dithering a bit. I suppose the french are in such turmoil that maybe its not that surprising that they didn’t play well

Vela looked completely lacking in confidence in front of goal and I assume he is now injured seeing as he wasn’t on the bench for todays game.

RvP has played several games in a row now so he will probably be injured by November.

I thought that Song didn’t look like he was up to his usual high standards for cameroon either.

I suppose alot of our best players aren’t even at the world cup so they will be fresh.

Can’t really blame the players in the France squad for playing so poorly… they knew they were out before the match and there are huge problems in that squad. No surprise that France lost tonight, but as a South African I am pretty pleased about that. I was at the France vs Uruaguay game on the 11th and France had absouloutly nothing about them, no cutting edge, no passion, no care. It was hard to watch.

The French got their just deserts, what a bunch of prissy underperforming twats, can’t pass won’t pass to individuals they don’t like and as much as Domenech has to be the worst ever manager he should have nutted Anelka for the disrespectful and typical Chav attitude we’ve come to expect.

I agree with you on Diaby, he impressed in the opening game then reverted to Clouseau type, wasn’t Vela out for 10 days after tweaking his hamstring?

On a different note, i think i remember you all getting carried away with the whole Joe Cole hysteria, where upon I informed you all that he would not indeed be playing for arsenal but instead he will be plying his trade at man ure, hate to say i told you so but….

good guess wags. We can all take a punt on where he will be. nothing is official yet so who knows who is right?

And more to the point, who gives a flying f*ck if you ‘guessed’ where Joe Cole is playing next year.

It is obvious the French players have no respect for Domenech. He clearly is a strange chap and the players have got a sulk on and tried to do things themselves.

Lets look at the similarities with England. Do you think maybe that ‘wife-hunter’ JT had a a word with Anelka and thats why he came out with a load of shit on Sunday. It seems the players dont agree with how we are playing and have decided to do it their way now.

It seems the French and English have far too many players who think they know best and look where it is getting them.

I make you right Tony. I think Cesc is a much better player than Xavi already. Stats don’t lie. I wouldn’t say Xavi slows play down but he does like to pass the ball around and look nice rather than picking a pass when one needs to be made, in comparison with Cesc.

JIN, I know you feel bitter towards Cesc since he doesn’t come out and say he is Arsenal. I remember your comments and I understand you are quite old school when it come to honoring contracts etc … and I’m with you on that.

Maybe these are reason for your own rose tinted specs  I thought Cesc was class as a sub. Similar to how good he was in the same role during the Euros.

If he stays with Arsenal how will you feel about him?

I get a little suspicious of Spains links with Barca. The more Spain don’t allow Cesc to prove he can be better than Xavi and Iniesta at international level, the more he will want to do it at Barca. He is a man with points to prove !!

Still though Matt, sure don’t play for your manager if he is a coque, but I think pros should always play for themselves. That’s why I love Jung Te the North Korea forward. Playing for a contract on the world stage !! Good man

    Jimmy,

If Fabregas stays with Arsenal and is whole hearted, not just hanging around for one more season, I shall be delighted as he is undoubtedly a class player and we are sorely in need of a touch of class.

    However!…..
