Is Manuel Almunia On His Way Out?

almunia

As my colleague Carl Eldridge has speculated the absence of keeper Manuel Almunia from the squads that appeared against Barnet and Sturm Graz must throw some doubt over the Spaniard’s future at Arsenal.

There has been constant speculation about a new goalkeeper arriving at the Grove. Almunia’s failure to be selected for both pre-season games so far has been put down to a “fever” but who knows? Almunia has travelled with the party to Austria. Lukasz Fabiański has started both games, giving way to Vito Mannone at half time who was in turn was replaced by Wojciech Szczęsny for the last twenty minutes at Underhill and to Szczęsny again for the second half against Sturm Graz.

Is this Arsčne Wenger’s plan B if we don’t manage to land another goalie before the start of the season? If so I have severe doubts. Fabiański has proved far too prone to mistakes when appearing for the first team. He had one good game at the Boleyn Ground in the FA Cup last season, then let us down in the next round in the Potteries when we went out to Stoke City, undone yet again by a Rory Delap long-throw. He also made a horrible error in Oporto. Fortunately that didn’t cost us in the long-term.

For my money Vito Mannone is the best of the current three senior goalkeepers. Yes, he did make some errors in his short run in the first team last season but he also had some excellent performances. On raw talent Wojciech Szczęsny is the most gifted and he did very well on loan at Brentford last season, winning the hearts and minds of the Griffin Park faithful with some outstanding displays for the Bees. I think it would be asking a lot to drop him into the deep end of the Premier League pool at just twenty years old though. Goalkeeper is the technically most complex position in football. They tend to mature and have their best seasons later than outfield players.

Fabiański, although slightly shorter than ideal for a top-class goalkeeper appeared to have all the right stuff in his early first team appearances. He has however proved himself very fallible and error-prone. He seems to have something of the Alex Manninger about him, capable of making great saves but also prone to let errors get to him. Even the best goalies make mistakes. David Seaman, amongst the best in the world at his peak made errors. He could always put them behind him. Fabiański appears to have Manninger’s tendency to let errors pray on his mind.

For all his faults Manual Almunia is, I think, a better goalie than Lukasz Fabiański. If we’re unable (or unwilling to spend the money) to secure a better keeper, at least until Wojciech Szczęsny has had the chance to mature a little further, then I’d pick Almunia over Fabiański but Mannone over both of them. I don’t think we’re giving ourselves anything close to a fair go in winning trophies next season without reinforcement in this key position.

Nothing would delight me more than to be proved completely wrong. I don’t think events will prove me so however.

Keep the faith!

Being brutally honest with myself, I don’t see a new keeper joining our ranks either. I have the impression Almunia is on the way out, so it really will be interesting (or terrifying) to see who’s between the posts at Anfield. It’s almost impossible to pick who our best keeper is among Fabianski, Mannone and Szczęsny – but overall I think they’re all around the same ability. If the ‘powers that be’ are insistant that we don’t get a new keeper this summer, then surely the need for a another centre-back or defensive midfielder is massively increased?

Here’s something interesting from the BPL website:

    http://www.premierleague.com/page/Top10Keepers/0,,12306,00.html

The Top ten Keepers in the premier league…this list has Mark Schwarzer in at number 8 just ahead of Manuel Almunia in 9th. It has them separated by 18 points while Schwarzer is one point behind Shay Given. I’m not sure if any of this means anything. Except in this context, Schwarzer is not a vast improvement on Almunia

That PL table of top goalies is pretty interesting, if anything, it points to the fact that Almunia is actually better than we give him credit for!

He’s the 9th BEST goalie out of 20 in the league, that’s not bad at all, of course we’d rather have someone in the the top 5, but look at it this way, not even Man U’s Van der Sar is in the top ten, so apparently Almunia is actually better than him!, and Man U finished higher than the Arse, so this might actually prove that it’s not Almunia that lost us the league (Ok he did contribute slightly), but we failed in other ways. I think that’s what Wenger is thinking, that if we have a slightly better Goalie to just help the Youngsters mature a bit more, and we improve our defensive game (Kosienly, Djoru, Campbell), AND of course we are better equipped in attack (Chamack), and of course “1 year older=more experience=better” then we must surely have a better chance to succeed this time round.

Personally I’d like take Shwarz, or any other top goalie, I don’t buy the hype that surrounds Hart, I do think he looks like he could be a great goalie but is also young and inexperienced at present, therefore can potentially make mistakes, and don’t we have enough like that? If we want to try a young goalie, we already have one like that, he’s called Woijd;kdj Szcgfwigwlirny (A.K.A Roger Chesny) he’s only just turned 20, turned international at 19 even though he was still in Arsenals ACADEMY, at 19 RULED the Brendford goal, he’s certainly worth a try, don’t you think?

I am proposing that Arsenal fans World wide post letters once a week for the next four weeks to UEFA & FIFA complaining about Barcelona FC’s persistent public ‘tapping up’ of Cesc Fabregas.

Also post a letter just once to Arsenal FC requesting that they formally complain to UEFA & FIFA about Barcelona FC’s rule breakin…g disrespectful behaviour.
I have drawn up 3 template letters that I will email to willing participants. All that you will need to do is type in your own Name & Address before printing off & posting.

A momentum is needed in this regard & can be boosted by you forwarding the email I send you to every single one of your Arsenal FC supporting family & friends and encouraging them to post letters off once every week for four weeks to UEFA & FIFA and just once to Arsenal FC.

The aim of repetitive letters would be to create an Administrative headache for UEFA & FIFA with hopefully thousands of letters received from all over the world. It would be a great way to display the strength of feeling from Arsenal FC fans.

The purpose of the single letter to Arsenal FC is again to display the strength of feeling from Arsenal FC fans.

The Arsenal FC hierarchy seem to exist in an ‘Ivory Tower’ immune or just simply ignorant to the feelings & wishes of their fans.

My email address for this campaign from where I will email you the letter templates is …….. ArsenalFansHateBarcelonaFC@gmail.com

COME ON !! …… Lets DO this & be taking substantive action for a change instead of simply bleating on web blogs which achieves nothing as it goes unnoticed by those who should hear the complaints the most.
I will post this on the anti Barca facebook group ………….

    http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=116042895106146

& also on as many Arsenal blogs as possible via ……………

I have to disagree on something here…. in my opinion Szeszny is ready to be our no 1! THis guy is AMAZING – everytime I have seen him play for the reserves or youth he has been sensational. His performances in Carling Cup were steady. HE was AWESOME at Brentford last season, he is a big character and he is also big physically. HE believes he is ready (he has the confidence) and i would say that he is already, at just 20, miles better than what we currently have. I do not rate Mannone at all, I would actually put FAbianski above him. Mannone inspires no confidence in me whatsoever – even when he had a run in the team last season I thought he was very very lucky not to concede more goals than he did. I would keep Fabianski as I believe he has some potential but for me Szescny is ready – apologies for poor spelling

Mannone is probably overrated by the fans. I’ve heard that he’s prone to errors in reserve matches and the fact that Wenger and the other staff at Arsenal don’t seem too excited by him, especially when you compare how they talk about Szczesny, suggests there’s truth in those reports. The fact that Barnsley got rid of him quickly also doesn’t bode well.

I really hope we sign a new goalie – someone to really take charge of our back four. Why not the likes of Akinfeev? I do have faith in Wenger but I am started to get really frustrated with him. He mentioned after last season that he must strengthen his squad if the gunners want to win anything this year, yet 8 players are left or due to leave and only two brought in! We have money, admittedly not a great deal, but wenger really needs to bring in a few more players this term otherwise its game over.

Será porque el Arsenal juega sin portero y casi sin defensas… A Spanish blogger on why Cesc should leave The Arsenal. No goalie and a defence gone AWOL!
The world will ALL want to be tuned into Barcelona v Real Madrid and Real Madrid v Barcelona. With the Spanish Cup and the Champions League will also be possibles. Barcelona and Real Madrid will finish 20 or 30 points ahead of the chasing (?) pack. Who cares, the Spanish League is THE El Dorado for 2010 /2011 season. The Special One seems to do a 2-3 years stint at the various coal faces to-date.
Cesc sister has written something on the lines to expect something to happen on Tuesday, 27th July 2010.

an interesting fact about the GK situation at arsenal is tht despite almunia being down with a “fever” he still is part taking in all the intesive training sessions.

  • THE American Gooner

No reputable top 10 list would have Almunia anywhere near the top 70. Heck, I’d take about 7 American goalkeepers before him (though that is the one position we produce well). Give me Hart, Schwarzer, Frey, Skletlenberg, Neuer, anyone but Almunia (or, for that matter, Fabianski) – I’ll even take Eboue in net.

I rate Mannone and Szczes way above our other keepers – hope Wenger at least can agree on that.

way to go joe, finally I get to agree with someone. I also beleive that akinfeev is one of the best international keepers and along with handanovic are my top picks for our goalie switch. But unfortunately, no matter how hopeful we are of these changes, I really don’t see it happening. U can kinda tell by the changed emphasis of the media speculation post world cup. When there was absolutely no remotely readable club news coming out during the WC, we got linked to every perspective goal keeper out there cause there wasn’t anything relevant to print. Now, during the peak of the transfer season, “GK linked with Arsenal” articles have become a rarity or switched emphasis to Schwartz or “which shitty keeper will Arsene choose?” ones. I’m thinking thats because there is no real news on us getting a new keeper, which doesn’t bode well for those of us clamoring for a new classy keeper(pleaseeeeee arsene sign Akinfeev tommorow and prove me wrong!!!!!!). I don’t really consider schwartz a step-up so I’m grouping him with same shitty keepers that we already have (disregard worcejch cause he has 0 top league experience).

We won’t splash big cash on a goalie anyway… IF we buy, it’s a short term solution until Chesney is considered ready to take over nr 1.

To go into this season with Fabianski as nr 1 with Mannone as backup should cause a lot of sleepless nights! Mannone should not be considered for first team action at Arsenal and should be flogged!

  • TitlestotheArsenal

Again, it’s as clear as day that we will not win any titles, if any of the goalkeepers we have right now will feature between the sticks.

Unless Wenger splashes the money for a top class keeper that could be any of the following: Gianluigi Buffon, Sebastien Frey, Igor Akinfeev, Hugo Lloris or Maarten Stekelenburg or anyone in that “1st choice for a strong international side” category, we just won’t win anything.

Schwarzer is a bit better than what we have, and so is even Jussi Jääskeläinen, but again we need a much stronger goalkeeper than any of those two.

But I do fear, as many of the rest of you, that Wenger simply won’t splash the needed cash….please prove me wrong, Arsène!!

well cech was only young when he joined chelski. and all these suggestions of akinfeev from people who think that fabianski, etc have no exerpience? akinfeevs younger than fabianski!! personally out of all the keepers i’ve seen and valuations, i think BORUC was a big loss. having played in scotland for so long, surely we could have persuaded him to come to the emirates? at 30-31, he would have been ideal (i still think we need a keeper with some years left in him, i don’t rate mannone AT ALL).

fabianski and szczcesny and another EXPERIENCED keeper for next season. heck, i’d even like an experienced striker while we’re at it… majority of our players won’t come under the 25-rule this year (being that most of them are under 21) so we can use that to our advantage… come on, where’s the 25-35 year old group of 3-4 players that bust their BALLS to do what they love doing as compared to ‘some kid trying to make a buck’.

Akinfeev has over 5 years of top league experience in Russian league, which consistently provide CL qualifiers, and has a massive amount of international experience as 1st choice keeper for russia (uefa rank 7 after euro 2008). So basically, u have no idea what ur comparing or talking about. look that shit up before u sound ignorant dude
