Fabregas will stay for FIVE more years, roars Wenger. We can win the league without any more signings, says Wenger.
Two key headlines from yesterday’s AW press conference ahead of the Emirates Cup tournament today. Let’s take them in isolation.
The first: While I truly admire AW’s tough, bullish stance on this, if we have to go through yet another summer like this where we as a club have been ridiculed by the saga then, frankly, I hope we don’t actually keep Cesc for five seasons.
My attitude to this would change dramatically if the player were to come out and state it, but his silence on this particular matter is deafening. If, and it is still an ‘if’, we can keep him for this season and say, we don’t have a trophy-winning season, the Barca-fuelled, Spanish media-led speculation on the Spaniard’s future will fire up again. So, in short my guess is he won’t stay for five more years.
The second headline: We weren’t far off at all last season and, again, key injuries at crucial stages of the season left us short. And that’s my point. We need strength, experienced strength, in depth. Of course, we could win the title this season. But who amongst you, realistically, thinks we can without adding to our squad? It’s laughable.
We don’t have a decent keeper at the club and we have shipped out three central defenders with experience of the Premier League and brought a decent prospect in who is untried in the English game. So, I don’t think we can win the league without drafting in more talent. AW has already said we will bring in new faces and is still looking…
I’ve got to the point where I can’t separate the supposition from the half-truths or the kidology from the credible. Yes, it is AW’s job to protect negotiations and transfer targets from the Press and do what’s best in the interests of the Arsenal. He has to play a game with the media. They show him such little respect and I don’t blame him for playing the game and playing better than most of the dimwiys posing the inane questions. But a consequence of that is that we the fans are left very much in the dark for regular periods. F*ck me, it is so frustrating.
If this sounds like a moan-up, or a dig at AW and you disagree I’d welcome your thoughts. All I would say is that I’ll be going home and away this season come what may so I reckon I can have my say without being labeled a dissenter. Supporting Arsenal isn’t about cheering on individual players it’s about roaring on the collective representation of the rip-roaring Gunners.
It all kicks off in earnest at Liverpool in two weeks but we get a chance to get into the old familiar routine at the home of football today against AC Milan and tomorrow against Celtic. I shall be in the Railway at Finsbury Park pre-match on both days and trust that landlady Gena has the Strongbow chilled accordingly. Up the Gunners and FOYS!
