T’Rovers/Defending/Jack Wilshere/Carling Cup

By  Published: 30th August 2010

Jack-Wilshire

I’m still laughing about the Pie-Eaters seeing off Spuds at the Lane on Saturday following our win up at Ewood Park. The Mackems beating Citeh yesterday was chuckle-inducing too.

Unfortunately Chavski and United had to go and rain on our parade by winning. Still. Nothing’s perfect. A bit like our defending which is FAR from ideal.

Having stuttered and played quite poorly at Anfield on the opening weekend, being gifted a point courtesy of a goalkeeping howler, albeit induced by our pressure; we’ve bounced back quite nicely.

Big Fat Sam Allardyce – detested by a majority of Gooners but respected if disliked by me – and Arsčne Wenger clearly can’t stand the sight of each other, so any meeting between teams managed by the two is always going to see the players well motivated. We rocked a bit in the first half and the Blackburn player went past Laurent Koscielny far too easily for their goal. Whoever was meant to be marking Diouf (No. Not him. The other one) also lost him for t’Rovers tap-in goal.

Courtesy of an excellent goal from Theo Walcott from an equally good pass from Robin van Persie and the winner from Andrey Arshavin after excellent work by Bacary Sagna down the wing and a good off-the-ball run by Theo Walcott which cleared Sagna’s path, we returned to London with the three points and sit second in the table (just) from Manchester United.

It might seem churlish to be complaining given the decent start we’ve had, but I’m in that sort of mood so I’m going to. We’ve conceded two goals in three games for an average of .66 against per match. That would equate to a goals against tally in the League of around 25-26 at the end of the season. This would represent a considerable improvement on last season’s 41 conceded, an average of a goal a game.

That said, we’re still loose as a team when not in possession. Blackburn opened us up like a can-opener for their goal on Saturday. We really don’t want to let in too many more like that.

All that said  it’s hard to complain at seven points from three games with two of our more difficult away games out of the way. I was quite favourably taken by how well we stood up to the Blackburn blitzkrieg after going ahead 2-1 on Saturday.

We will know by tomorrow evening whether our squad will stay as it is until at least January. I won’t indulge in speculation. There’s little point. We’ll all know soon enough.

Before kick-off up in east Lancashire we learned our fate in the third round of the Carling Cup. Away at the Lane. Not the draw we wanted. What we certainly don’t want is a repeat of the last time we played at the Lane in the semi-final second leg of the same competition. We were awful that night. A supine surrender. Let’s go down there at least let them know they’ve been in a game.

After the game at Ewood Park, young Jack Wilshere got himself in a spot of bother with the Babylon following some sort of ruck in a club in the early hours of Sunday morning. Wilshere had his collar felt by Plod before being released on bail. I’m not going to condemn the lad. We’re all entitled to rest and recreation after work. I also have no idea exactly what went on other than what I’ve read and seen in the media. I just hope the lad has the brains not to go down the path of mindless media celebrity trodden by too many Premier League players these days.

Trust me mate. I was nineteen once, a very long time ago.  A good-looking  and willing partner, a nice restaurant, good food and wine, followed by a night in playing hide the sausage is a lot more fun than spending a few hours in the local nick. A lot more relaxing too. Sooths away all the aches and strains of being booted up hill and down dale in Lancashire. Give the nightclubs a rest except for highdays and holidays until your football career is behind you.

Finally, congratulations to Theo Walcott and Kieran Gibbs for their selection for England’s forthcoming games against Bulgaria at Wembley and away to Switzerland in Basel in the European Championship qualifiers.

Keep the faith!

yes we don’t want our wee jack turning into “jack the lad” …arsene, old chap, have a word in his shell…

rosicky subbed in the cesc and a loss of cover at midfield and we lost the midfield for a while. jack the lad in for arshavin, rosicky moved wide on the left and jack came into middle and we started to buzz again. someone last week praised rosicky highly but he did not have what it takes to step into that fixture and command the midfield. the difference was quite profound I thought. And then Jack pitched up and again one felt they were looking at the heir apparent. But for an unlucky slip and we would be singing his praises on high.

Football cannot go without recognizing the shambles of test cricket thanks to pakistan. It makes me a bit nervous the number of side bets one can make in a football match and the susceptability of the beautiful game being sullied.

Rosicky is good enough for any team in the world

I agree that Wilshere looks incredibly promising. He needs to be carefully nurtured.

On the gambling and football, a must read is Canadian journalist and academic Declan Hill’s book “The Fix – Soccer & Organised Crime”‘ already a best-seller in Canada, France, Germany and Austria, he can’t find a publisher in Britain due to the chilling effect of libel laws here.

The Football Supporters’ Federation is currently looking at ways of getting this important work into the public domain. Meanwhile you can buy it on Amazon on import from Canada for about £12. You won’t regret it.

The Arsenal Academy seems to produce one or two “kleiner matz” (tiny tots in German)who will misbehave. The lad was at Bolton and kept out of the news.
They should look to Mr Fabregas who had the decency to text Eduardo very promptly, to the meeting of the two clubs. Eduardo played another 50 so minutes for before being substituted. His club won and are top of the Ukrainian League.
By the way Vic, you have spent too long in the drug infested Latin American countries and have become too melodramatic!!!
Akhat Bagrin aka Alik the Greek was a Crimean Tartar. The River Don has a special resonance with the Communist Russia that was. The Spiritual Sirectorate of the Muslims of the Ukraine was set up in the Donbas by Bagrin. Both Russia and the Ukraine wanted the Donbas as it was the only region in the Ukraine to have a positive cash flow. Bagrin, his bodyguard and five or sox others were blown up in the VIP box by a bomb. The present President was a relative and partner, who inherited the Bagrin estate. This person was held up in a convenient traffic jam and miised the league game. Just like the Chelsea owner, Akhmetov, using a well known American advertising firm, cleaned up his image and with the current poliitical set-up enjoys unlimited control.
Russia will continue to destablise the former USSR countries by supporting all Russian minorities in those countries, who wish to return to the old ways. The current Russian Prime Minister had nothing to do with THAT explosion but of course the “criminal elements” is Russian speak for those who wish for independence from Moscow!
You missed a proper informative article here, Vic!

any chance of aw getting another striker in ?van persie crocked again its just not good enough, same old story with him and we depend to much on him.

word was there was an argy bargy and he acted to calm the situation. if that’s the case it is not fair to label him in some sort of guilt by association. I did not say Rosicky was not quality. I said when placed in the central role on saturday he was not able to step into cesc’s shoes and make an impact on the game… until introduction of jack in the central role and in moving rosicky wider into the space formerly occupied by arshavin the team clicked again. would it have worked the same if Jack would have straight swapped with cesc and Rosicky for Arshavin? not sure. But it worked for the final 10 odd minutes. It created an excellent chance to ice the game at 1-3 and it took alot of pressure off the backline just when they were starting to get penned in a bit. The critical comparison is to other years and the response these players have demonstrated in these types of fixtures. It was a much stronger generally self assured response. we did not lose our rythmn when RVP was subbed. Cham’s hold-up play was first rate and he certainly gave as good as he got. we saw a bit of steel in that fixture which was not bent by injury or less than spectacular performance from Cesc. it was the strength of a squad and bodes well for our play after the break.

I dont know how unrealistic is this but with Ibrahimovic at Milan, theyre trying to offload Huntelaar for around 12m who is a world class striker IMO but RMadrid broke his confidence and Milan never played him, but he’s still class.

This was the first summer in a long time that I said that the lastest we need was a striker but I dont think we can keep dreaming to see Van Persie to complete a year without a big injury.
