West Brom Shambles

almunia

Ahead of yesterday’s match against West Brom, fellow blogger Carl Eldridge wrote that the game was “a must-win for us if we have any hope of challenging for the title. Three points up for grabs and must be taken, no messing”. I’m sure Carl won’t appreciate me dredging up that quote, but after Saturday’s disaster, it’s interesting to take a look at how our season’s shaping up. And while hope for the Premier League hasn’t vanished, it’s certainly faded slightly.

Played six, won three, drawn two, lost one. What was a promising first four games to the season has quickly evolved into a rather dodgy-looking half dozen. If we don’t take any points from our trip to Stamford Bridge next week, we’ll be looking at one point from the last nine available – a sobering statistic.

Now I’m not resigning us to defeat at the hands of Chelsea, but losing to West Brom and drawing with Sunderland has made that journey across London more dangerous than ever. I still believe our squad has the ability to cause an upset at Chelsea, but thanks to those five recently dropped points, we now have no choice but to demand a win against the Blues. A victory over the reigning champions in their own backyard would, I’m sure, tend to the wounds we’ve suffered over the last two games. Another consecutive loss and our title challenge, while still premature, would be considerably less stable.

Our embarrassing defeat at the hands of the Baggies did illuminate something yesterday – how vital Cesc Fabregas is to our team. We’ve struggled to penetrate Premiership opposition when Fabregas hasn’t been playing – just look at the game yesterday, our opener against Liverpool, and the second half against Sunderland. But Cesc or no Cesc, Arsenal should still be able to take three points from a home tie against ‘yoyo team’ West Bromwich Albion. I think Wenger accurately mirrored the opinions of the fans when he said that he just didn’t know what happened to his team.

I’m hoping that the loss we suffered yesterday was a mere blip in what was appearing to be a promising season. We played so awfully yesterday, I can’t help but think that we simply can’t play that badly again, at least not at The Grove. But yet again, while it’s not an excuse for the piss-poor performance, our biggest problem is our injuries. Only six games into the league and we’re already missing our best striker, our leading goal-scorer, our best midfielder and our best defender. While nobody knows the true cause of this, I don’t agree with the fans who claim we need to employ a whole new medical team. If I were to make a guess, I’d say that our quick ‘pass-and-move’ style of play simply makes it a lot more difficult for opposition to time their tackles on us correctly. But whatever the cause, the effect is damaging our campaign already.

I would be as bold to say that if Fabregas doesn’t turn out for the starting eleven against Chelsea next week, we won’t win. That’s purely speculation ofcourse, what I can say for sure is that if we play like we did against West Brom again, we’ll be on the receiving end of a proper belting. But not wanting to end on such a cynical note, let’s hope for a positive midweek result against Partizan Belgrade which spring-boards us into a Fabregas-fuelled encounter with the champions next week. Our captain has the ability to, quite literally, lead us to a victory against any team in the world and with the possible return of Thomas Vermaelen, maybe hoping for an away win over the Blues next week might not be quite as ridiculous as it seemed yesterday.

Finally, am I alone in thinking that Mannone or Szczesny deserve a chance to steal a first-team slot, starting against Partizan on Tuesday?

To rely on Feb is akin to putting all your eggs in one basket.I remember GG pinned 80% to 90% his goal scoring on Wright. The result was when Wright was stifled, the gunners inevitably had a bad day.
FF to 2010.Football is a team game and when any top player is absent, the team will be down at most 70% of its quality. Oterwise it will be curtains.

Just when we thought the worst of our goalkeeping nightmares were behind us up pops the old Almunia. Rushing out to the edge of his box to give away a penalty and get booked, he redeems himself by saving the poorly taken spot kick, relief all round!

Then comes his second half headless chicken act and we are three down in next to no time.

He does not alone carry all the responsibility for conceding three goals, the entire team where playing lacklustre football and seemed to be in a dream for much of the game, he must however, take much of the blame as his decision making was poor to say the least.

It was apparent all last season that the first choice pair of Almunia and Fabianski were just not good enough yet the only serious attempt to find a replacement was centred on a £4.5 million offer for the ageing Scwarzer.

Arsene Wenger must now open negotiations with Man. City with a view to signing Shay Given the moment the January transfer window opens.

With Almunia’s fragile confidence in tatters, after yesterday’s fiasco, we must just hope that Mannone and Szczesny can see us through the first half of the season.

One horrible thought has just struck me, have either Mannone or Szczesny been included in the Arsenal Champions League squad?

having only seen MotD then it’s difficult to say anything too much but this I will say:

    1) will we now make a proper bid for Given in January, regardless of Ctieh being reluctant to sell him our way ?

2)I am not saying our central pairing are no good or won’t become better or even great but I am not sure they are gelled yet. On the floor they are good but Kos doesn’t seem to have a strong enough header on the ball.

    3) Overall, without players like Cesc, RvP and Vermaalen in the side, we are still too arrogant or complacent. That is not to say we are aware of it but when we played Sunderland last week, I swear we thought we were still playing Braga. There should be no-one in this squad ( or any team’s squad ) that thinks ” West Brom/ Hull/ Accrington Stanley ? Who are they ? “
    Exactly.

Song needs to un-dye his hair and get back to being the player he can be. He’s not been the same since he went blond.

I don’t care what colour his hair is Song needs to remember that he is a holding midfielder and not a striker.

Entire team selection was dodgy were at home with diaby eboue and song in the side. Arshavin showed no graft. How bout helping out defensively when you’ve just lost the ball you little shit! So you all want to slab off MA. His challenge leading to penalty was a defensively lapse. Why was song in effect leading the attack so much? Sorry chaps i don’t rate nasri. At least to lead the line and eboue is no midfielder. We only came alive after eboue and diaby were pulled. So blame almunia if you like but the real problems were created further up the pitch. Its time to sit arshavin i hate his attitude and it affects everyone in my mind.

It’s quite sad to think that AW will probably not now get another chance to fix the goalkeeping situation. It’s all got a bit too much too early to see him around next season.

Arshavin can’t be dropped, he’s an integral part of the team at the moment. Yes he’s poor defensively, but he’s been massively involved in our goals and assists this season. And who would you play in place of him anyway?

Are you saying that Wenger is going to get sacked?

He has just been given a new four year contract and on the basis of one poor game you are advocating the dismissal of the greatest manager Arsenal have ever had.

One bad result and all the doubters come crawling out of the woodwork.

Danish Gooner has decided, and he’s been saying it for years, that nine yes nine of our first team squad haven’t got the class for Premiership football.

Do these people live solely to criticise?

Yeah, Mannone has been included in the squad and Szczesny is under 21 so he can play without being ‘officially’ included.

Personally im not a doubted. I think we can win all awards this year (4 of em) wenger started match with a 4 4 2. He soon realized problem and changed it. But a rythmn had been set. I think id put either rosicky or wilts on earlier. (Depending on what knocks carrying and fatigue consideration looking ahead to tuesday and cl) i always feel arshavin is saving himself for something maybe use as sub is a better fit. Who’d i start instead? Rosicky but see above. Agree re MA but its about 11 on pitch and how they work together. We can only afford one stroller at a time.

I questioned that midfield line up too. There’s absolutely no creativity or craft in that trio.

I honestly don’t understand Diaby’s game nowadays. Wenger will be better off turning him into an out and out defensive midfielder – cover for Song. He doesn’t give much else.

Eboue in the centre of the park? Are you serious? When has he ever controlled a game? Don’t get me wrong, I think he can be dangerous but play him on the flank.

It was a terrible loss by any standard. Both the players and the manager should shoulder the responsibility. The team that was on the pitch was good enough to win the game. Yes, AW was spot on to rest Wiltshere. Alumina is the best goalkeeper on Arsenal books right now.
The problem yesterday was in the ATTITUDE. It seems to me that everyone at arsenal including the supporters never approached this game as a do or die affair. The attitude has to change…everyone must fight tooth and nail evry minute of every game including the supporters.

Your rare mention of West Brom in that article – ‘we should be able to beat a yo-yo team like West Bromwich Albion’ – sums up exactly some of the main reasons why you lost. First off, quite possibly Wenger, the team and the fans looked at the fixture and decided it would take care of itself. West Brom? No problem. Take care of that and move on.

Secondly, you didn’t look at the quite solid form of WBA before they came to the Emirates, or chose to ignore it wholesale, with defeats to Chelsea and Liverpool the only black marks on a steadily-improving run.

Thirdly, and more importantly, you’re choosing to believe the concept that teams, no matter what size and quality they are, have no obligation or ability to compete, and you’re left looking right planks when you find – much to your cost – that they can and then some.

You keep on thinking that certain teams have no right to beat you, keep living in that little bubble of unreality that says no-one except a Manchester United or a Champions League team can beat you, and you get what you deserve.
