FTK Blog: Relax! nobody died…

arshavinbraca

One of the truths of life is that the unexpected happens just when you don’t expect it. Ok semantics apart. I had already blogged about the failure to sign a new keeper after the transfer window shut and pointed out that we can only make do with what we have. The world and his mother have come out to publicly blame Arsene Wenger for failing to buy a new keeper. Let me say now, that you can only say that if you are possession of the FULL facts. We have almost every “arsenal” blog suggesting that Arsene was more interested in proclaiming the profits of the club rather than concentrating on managing his team.

WRONG!

Arsene had pointed out to his players that they must not become complacent after the Tottenham game. He pointed out that they play football and must not be taken for granted. He asked for focus and quality, but what he got in return was mediocrity by the spadeful. So for the first time that I can recall, Arsene Wenger publicly criticized his players in damning fashion and quite right too. For they are to blame NOT Arsene Wenger.

Before anyone calls me an AKB look at the starting lineup

Almunia

Clichy, Koscienly Squillaci Sagna

Song, Diaby

Arshavin Nasri Eboue

Chamakh

Are you seriously telling me that this lineup was not expected to beat West Bromich Albion? The majority of players failed to turn up and Nasri, Song and Chamakh apart the rest were complacent and played the BOGOF principle. Buy One pass and Give away One pass Free. It was like a charity. WBA were the poor outcasts in need of benevolence from the wealthy posh boys at the Grove.

The problem?

Yes, we needed a Goalkeeper, but the undermining of Almunia was self inflicted. The crowd sang his name when he saved the penalty, and jeered him when he unexpectedly glanced the ball into his own net with the kind of schoolboy error that good coaching should have prevented. Coming out half heartedly and not closing down the player was less than comical. In front of him the new centre backs were inexperienced and with Diaby’s mind elsewhere. They were pulled apart too easily. Song ventured forward and backwards trying to give leadership to the others, but the problem was nobody wanted to listen.

Eboue was too busy telling Chamakh how to be striker, Arshavin these days only ever turns up to play his thirty minutes which usually consist of a killer pass or assist or rarely a goal, so dropping him in the absence of Fabregas is suicidal. Sagna left his crossing boots at home and Squillaci seemed lost. The defensive unit ball-watched as WBA walked through with nicely timed runs from the large blindspots created when defensive players stand too square. Seeing only the ball and not the opponents to whom the ball could be passed.

The Solution?

Bring on Chelsea!

If you want to ditch this group of players and buy new ones, you can’t. if you want to put Fabianski in against Alex and John Terry, forget it. The only keeper that could possibly come in is Szczesny, but do you risk him in such a high pressured environment? We have to hope that Almunia does not put in a nightmare performance two games in a row, and that he comes to the fixture determined and focused. if we are to drop Almunia, it will take a very brave man to replace him against the might of Drogba and the aerial threat of Alex and Terry.

Do we risk a half fit Fabregas? YES

Do we risk a half fit Vermaelen? YES

That aside I would bring in Denilson and Jack Wilshere

My Lineup

Almunia

Clichy Koscienly Vermaelen Sagna

Song Denilson

Wilshere Fabregas Nasri

Chamakh

I will be slaughtered by those who think that I am stupid to drop Arshavin, but if we have Fabregas back, then Nasri more than makes up for his loss. Arshavin’s thirty minutes will not be enough against Chelsea and at least Chamakh will hold up the ball, and with Wilshere’s sublime attacking runs. We could do to Chelsea what Tevez did single handedly. Let’s remember that Chelsea can be beaten, as Man City demonstrated on Saturday. At the moment If we are to learn from our complacency, I’d rather that we lose and learn against West Brom rather than Chelsea, as psychologically taking points off the blue half of Fulham is one of the ways to ensure the title. Arsene Wenger quality as a manager is always to resurrect our hopes when everyone has written us off, including our own wobbly supporters. I am convinced that we will go to Stamford Bridge and win, through Arsene Wenger’s leadership.

In the final analysis, Arsene Wenger is being blamed for being too loyal to his keeper Almunia who is every bit as average as Mark Schwarzer, so why replace like with like? He did not sign a keeper this transfer window for reasons that NOBODY knows except the inner sanctum at the club. We couldn’t get Shay Given, or Pepe Reina. Let’s face reality, as I have already said in an earlier blog we cannot do anything now until January. Yes we have money, yes we made profits, but who was complacent? the players chosen or the man who chose them? Yes they need motivation, but the players still have to turn up. So please don’t shoot me for not blaming Arsene Wenger, I am acting like Arsene in blaming the players, however he was doing it more to protect Almunia by not allowing his keeper to be undermined further by being singled out. When Almunia looks in the mirror he will hurt and want to put things right. The weekend was bad yes, because we lost, but so did Chelsea and guess what, Man Utd dropped two point at Bolton! So perhaps it was not that bad after all. So as the Americans say,

“Relax! Nobody died…”

Finally, a breath of fresh air among the tsunami of doom and gloom. It’s only September. United and Chelsea have dropped points and so have we. Everyone, except maybe Nasri, has a horrible game. Diaby and Eboue were recovering from injury. We’re stuck with Alimunia till at least January and up till yesterday had been pretty solid. Relax, Gooners.

Wenger is unfireable if that is a word.Any half decent football club with ambition would have sacked him ages ago.And Gazidis have stated that more of the same is the right tonic for the club, developing young talent and then flogging them for a vast sum of filtjy luke that is true greed ala Wall Street and Arsenal is noe officially a business and not a football club.

Well said and someone had to frankly. This AKB stuff irritates the he’ll out of me. I agree with some of the sentiment as everyone who follows football feels frustrated at times, but the term is just used to immediately dismiss any form of optimism and inrequiting support. You can’t have a conversation with retards like that, and I’ve tried! It’s one shocking game after a great start to the season. The same blogs that would have you burning the stadium down today are the same that were singing wengers praises on the signings last week. Far too many knee jerk crazies in our fanbase, they really should just go work for talksport rather than filling the grove with hate.

Guys, although I agree that there is some way over the top shit being said and written by the doomers. They do have a fair point.

There were some awful performances out there on Saturday which shocked almost everyone.

Truth is Almunia,Diaby and Clichy are nowhere near good enough injured or not and we do have better players than all three of these at the Club.

Wenger causes his own problems as he uses his favourites with every opportunity possible.

Its crazy to say Willshere is tired after the first half dozen games. If they are knackered already then why?

As for Arsen being the greatest I agree he is one of the best but Georgie Boy won 2 titles and a few cups that most Arsenal fans would definetly take this season.

I have no problem with Wenger but to say the Chavs and Mancs would want him is ridiculous plus dismissing GG is also very annoying.

The point is not that wilshere is knackered, it’s more that you can’t expect anyone, let alone an 18 year old, to play at Sunderland then 120 mins v scum, then 90 v west brim then 90 v Belgrade then 90 v Chelsea all in the space of 15 days. So looking at those fixtures, every single one of us wouldve picked west brom at home as the one to rest him in

Defensively our Midfield gave the ball away too easy. Song ventured far too forward for me. If we were WINNING 3-0 then by all means venture up. Diaby looked unfit and struggled to really find his position.

The first goal we conceded was REALLY REALLYB POOR, Not Almunia’s fault IMO, Sagna’s mistake allowing them to get behind, and then………….Why the FCUK did Squillaci, Diaby, Song and Koschelny go to one player and not not track the run of Olemwingie running into the box leaving him with an easy tap in.

3 Brom attackers agaisnt 6 Arsenal defenders. What’s worse is 5 of our defenders moved towards one Brom player on the wing leaving Clichy on his own to stop 2 Brum players infront of goal. WTF!!!

From there I was totally pissed off. The second goal was a poor effort by Almunia, and the third also poor, but he is not alone in the blame of the 2nd and 3rd goals conceeded. Clichy, Squillaci and Koschelny were also to blame.

Now forget about this game. Move on!
We have an away CL midweek game and a away short trip to Chavsville to focus on!

Arsenal lose 2-3 to WBA and all the fans crying for Arsene sacking. I wonder if Arsenal lose 2-0 to Hercules at home. Wake up everybody. Even Farca lose at home to newly promoted Hercules. Mighty treble winner Inter also lose to Roma. At least Arsenal try to get back after 3-0 down this season. If the season before, I guess it will stay at 3-0 or it might become worse to 4-0 or 5-0. Chelsea lose, Man Utd drop points, Man City can lose anytime and Liverpool strugle financially and positionaly. It still early of the season and still a long way to go for the title.

One of the best explanations of what happened against WBA ive read. People have become too hysterical, we are witnessing the best period in the history of the club. Those who complain obviously know better because thei football manager arsenal team win something every year without fail and that makes them feel good. This arsenal team dosent, the line between reality and fiction is blurred. We don’t have a Russian gangster or Arabian sheikh to give us millions either.arsenal just have a mortgage like most of us fans.

    El Tel,

look we know that Arsene failed to sign a keeper. He made a mistake? He gambled? who knows the truth????

If a club won’t sell a keeper to us, what can we do if there are few others good enough to replace Almunia.
to buy just for the sake of buying does not make sense.
Better stick and try to improve what we have.
Yet Almunia is his own worst enemy, it was just POOOR goalkeeping, but everyone has an off day at the office, and Almunia’s mistakes will not be tolerated by Wenger, but he realises that he will held responsible for his players failings. if Szczesny plays against chelsea and has a shocker, could we destroy his confidence too?

We need to understand that if Arsahvin and Diaby and Eboue made more mistakes than Almunia, the only difference being goals are not the consequence… Keepers are under the spotlight and we need to be less severe on some errors they make.

    Hi,

Quick question – since when did being ambitious mean using other team’s poor results as a means to justify your teams own failures?

We were diabolical against West Brom and Almunia made 2 game costing mistakes.

He is a goalkeeper, he is paid to make quality saves so I will not praise him when he does what he is paid for like many of the AKB brigade

We had a great opportunity to close the gap to 1 point, but as per usual, when the pressure to deliver is on, this team crumbles.

AKB boys are happy with what ever rubbish is served up, real fans demand success over substance.

Nobody died. But any hope of winning the title did. Yes, even though we are only six games in. We will lose to the chavs and that means 1 point out of the last 9.

As for gambling half-fit players, that’s moronic because the chances they’ll aggrevate an injury are far higher than any good they can bring to the game.

As for other teams not seeling us a GK, that only happened in the last week of August. What about the three months prior to that.

I don’t want AW out but I do want a change in attitude.

And that useless c**t Diaby should have outed last season. He might as well have died at kick-off.

FTK I agree hole hearted. I took my wife to her first football match on Saturday and was amazed by how poor the TEAM was. She said to me afterwards that West Brom deserved the win and this is from somebody who never really watches the game.

I understand why Wenger picked Diaby and Eboue, to rest Wilshere and Rosicky after a 120 minute North London Darby. But to not make the change sooner was a poor call.

The real debate is at what stage do you call time on players who are just not good enough or are not showing it consistently. Or players who have chronic injury worries and are off for seasons at a time.

All I know is that if AW wanted to rest his first team then the fans would have seen more desire from a second or third string team.

Essien is dangerous in the middle, we need more natural width in the team and Nasri doesnt always give width unfortunately which is why Arshavin must play.
The reason we criticise AW is because we support Arsenal. If you seriously believe that no blame can be laid at AW’s door then you are seriously deluded.
PS I trust AW but on hearing that Fabianski is playing in Belgrade tomorrow night was concerned at my reaction which was to put my head in my hands and mutter ‘Oh for f*cks sake’!

I didn’t say no blame can be laid on AW. But for the way the team performed on Saturday, its not AW, but the players that are to blame for not being up to the task.

I understand that expressing views is part of the passion that fans share. But criticising with the banner of having Wenger sacked is stupidity. If it wasn’t for his management, we would still be sitting in clogged Highbury stands or protesting over foreign ownership like Liverpool fans. I suggest everyone read into depth about problems facing Liverpool today and appreciate where we are.

Yes we lost to WBA but it’s not the end of the world. Chelsea lost to Wigan last season..big deal. It’s time to get on with it rather than call for changes and cause unrest!

Chelsea fan in peace here !!! Even I have to admit how deluded some ppl are to call for AW to be sacked.. The guy’s a genius (if you can ignore his selective vision and some strange post match comments)

But if you guys ever wanna sack him, I had be glad to have him at Chelsea :D He is a miracle worker and a really awesome Footbal manager…

I’ll be brief (cause I already wrote this once and then somehow deleted it- I guess if I am that stupid my comments don’t count) Nice balanced post FTK. I agree. no idea what was up in dressing room which lead to this team selection. 7 matches in 20 days is a bear for all and the others at the top are suffering too. injuries and just the time to prepare is nonexistent really and AW would be an idiot not to have his eyes on midweek and next weekend fixture. (I would say against evil empire but they are no where close to an empire!)
just my point arshavin is proving himself to be a bit player and not a 90minuter is all. and therefore subbing in when special skills needed at 60 plus minutes is how I can see using him if others are available and not carrying knocks.

psychologically he might not feel he has the puff for 90 minutes in the English game. So we might be saying “don’t let the door hit you in the arshavin on the way out”

in response to ftk’s point about someone selling a gk. I don’t think there is a manager in the PL who would do wenger a favour. He might have burned some bridges and he hasn’t held back on criticizing I don’t think he is a “member of the club” I think his ultimate big gk purchase will be overseas and someone very special if in fact he must go there.

Almunia and Diaby are rarely up to the task. And it’s AW’s fault for not replacing them.

As I have said before, I don’t want AW sacked but I do want a change in attitude which results in a more balanced view to strengthening the team.

The constant weak points are obvious for all to see but nothing was done. Attempting to sign Schwarzer with one week to go and then apparently haggling over £1 mil is a bit pathetic really.

    1. We’ll pay off our debt. In the past couple of years, or EVEN DAYS other clubs have come crashing down from higher ground and now find themselves in trouble because of debt. If I’m not mistaken we are the ONLY sports team in the history of the world to build a stadium ENTIRELY with our own money. Not a pound came from any government or council. To decrease debt by half in the space of 5 years is actually incredible.

    2. We need to have enough cash to steadily increase the wage bill as the kids start asking for more money (as they rightly should, which one of us doesn’t expect our salary to increase as we give the company we work for our service and loyalty?). Remember we had to go in with kids to Emirates because we didn’t have the money to spend on wages, and we got to the Champions leageu final!

    3. Reinvest in the club, around the world and in England. Arsenal are opening up soccer schools around the world right now, they will essentially be like little Arsenal scouting posts in order to spot the talent in Africa, Asia and help us beat out the other clubs in signing them because they’ve already played for us even if they haven’t ever stepped into England.

One other thing, I find that our stadium atmposphere does not seem, from my perspective, to be as intimidating and exciting as it could be. I have been an aresenal supporter for 12 years. I don’t live in England, I haven’t ever been to the Emirates. I watch every single game on television. I was watching a game this season with a friend of mine from liverpool and he commented on how quiet the emirates was. I’ve noticed it too. I wish I could be in the stadium shouting my face off, but I can’t. There are millions of Arsenal fans but only 55,000 or so get to actually be there for the team every game. But where on earth is the support? We Arsenal fans all around the world count on you to give the team support. You are our front line, am I going to have to come there and give you a Delia Smith rant? Can someone who is in the emirates back my up on this? Am I imagining this or is a large portion of the stadium confused as to whether its football or an opera they are watching. (I wouldn’t hasten to guess which one of the two has more drama)

OK Monktash, I have tried NOT to rise to the bait but here goes.

You wish a change in attitude from AW which will strengthen the team.

The buying of two centre backs and acquiring Chamakh was pretty bold surely?
Equally the best teams win trophies when the squad is settled, so we need evolution not revolution.

Yes one can correctly criticise AW for not TRYING to replace his keeper, but as I have said in my blog. We do not know the full facts, and if anyone can honestly claim to know what dealings were being conducted by AW, then pray tel…

Diaby is a French international, he has suffered a near career ending ankle injury and at 24yrs old is still to reach his prime. He is extremely talented and will improve in much the way that Song did.

As one contributor said, IF Schwarzer is the best replacement for Arsenal, what does it really say about our ambition.
Shay Given, Pepe Reina yes, we were right not to buy just for the sake of buying…
    :P

    :P
FTK – I am not trying to bait you, I was just stating my opinion.

I agree with the Schwarzer comment so what was going on at the end of August? We don’t know the full picture, accepted, but Mark Hughes made a statement in response to us trying to sign him so something was going on. As per the other blogger, indeed what does that say about ambition?

We’ll just have to disagree about Diaby. After the last world cup beinf a French international doesn’t say much really. His injury was bad and did set him back but I don’t see any improvement in him.

Regarding the CBs. We had no choice, well OK we did, we could have kept the players we let go.

I believe that sometimes we should spend in order to strengthen, not just to replace players.

(I wouldn’t hasten to guess which one of the two has more drama)
The point I was really trying to make in my first comment was that despite the club stating that we don’t have much money for transfers is evidently not true. So as I have said many time previously (yeah boring boring) it’s a club strategy not to do so.

Your latest comment could be the subject of a degree thesis.

Yes the grove can be quiet but so are many other stadiums. Anfield can be the same so don’t necessarily take the word of your scouse mate.

All seater stadiums means like-minded people aren’t all together like they were on the terracing.

Away support is usually more vociferous.

Ticket pricing means that the traditional working class support base has gone. The argument that the working class were louder would go on and on.

The rise of the premier league made watching football popular or trendy.

And lastly it could be claimed that quite a few of Arsenal’s fans would be more at home at the opera !

Your whole comment could get some interesting replies if people are still looking at this blog.
