FTK Blog: Fortress Emirates? I wish…

fans1

There was a comment made on my last blog which really opened up a can of worms relating to the atmosphere at the Emirates. Given that Highbury was nicknamed the library, is this symptomatic of Arsenal fans in general or is there as I suspect a new breed of football fan. I have blogged on several occasions about my disgust in seeing hordes of fans leave the Emirates when things are not going well. The defeat by the Baggies has been done to death, but my short Blog today is to CONDEMN the Gooners who whinge on one hand whilst denying much needed support on the other. I sit in the West Stand and my indicator for how badly things are going is whether I can see the white Cannon being ever more defined in the lower East middle block.

Club level members pay so much that something in me says that I should not really berate them as much as those who do not pay their ticket prices, but having a tier almost empty is quite embarrassing at times, and as the Club moves into profit, perhaps we ought to consider ways of encouraging those members to remain in their seats and support their team. Otherwise reduce the prices and get REAL fans in those seats. Controversial perhaps  yes?

Here is what was said in the comment

One other thing, I find that our stadium atmosphere does not seem, from my perspective, to be as intimidating and exciting as it could be. I have been an arsenal supporter for 12 years. I don’t live in England, I haven’t ever been to the Emirates. I watch every single game on television. I was watching a game this season with a friend of mine from Liverpool and he commented on how quiet the Emirates was. I’ve noticed it too. I wish I could be in the stadium shouting my face off, but I can’t. There are millions of Arsenal fans but only 55,000 or so get to actually be there for the team every game. But where on earth is the support?

We Arsenal fans all around the world count on you to give the team support. You are our front line, am I going to have to come there and give you a Delia Smith rant? Can someone who is in the Emirates back me up on this? Am I imagining this or is a large portion of the stadium confused as to whether its football or an opera they are watching. (I wouldn’t hasten to guess which one of the two has more drama)

I have tried to understand why myself and as far as I can surmise there are the following types of fans

1. Plastic fans  who have no knowledge of football and what it means but just  want to be associated with a trendy club in North London.

2. Newbie Gooners/Junior Gunners  who are passionate but don’t know the songs and would never leave early as they have been on the waiting list for much of their lives.

3. Established hard core Gooners who sing and chant often obscenely, and want others to sing but can’t understand why they don’t join in their obsession with Tottenham.

4. Established hard core Gooners who prefer to sing with the non obscene chants, and wish that we could  coordinate our singing more efficiently, but make as much noise as they can.

5. Established Gooners who refuse to chant or cheer or clap and never leave early.

6. Established Gooners who will cheer and clap but always leave early.

7. Fans who attend corporate/boxes and watch the game on the TVs provided whilst eating smoke salmon sarnies and sipping champagne

8. people who are in none of the groups above, and are there through patronage, freebies from sponsors or connections with players or board members

Does anyone know what percentage of the 60,000 support are in each group?

Which group are you in? (bet you won’t be honest!) I am in group 4 mainly depending on who is sitting next to me, but often before the game and at the start I am in group 3!

To make a stadium with atmosphere we need at least a third of the stadium to sing in UNISON.

That means 20,000 fans must be prepared to support their club, is that too difficult to achieve?

When the Emirates has been rocking ,  I reckon at best  we have had around ten thousand fans who sing together, imagine what doubling this figure would do to opposing teams and fans…

Leaving early DOES harm the atmosphere, so even if you have been in group 4, consider yourselves pathetic if you left on Saturday before the end. The rest of us stayed and applauded the Baggies off the field. Sitting DOES harm the atmosphere, and perhaps the FSF (football Supporters Federation) should look at petitioning for the offical granting of safe standing areas within stadiums for people to sing?

Perhaps we need help from Red Action on this as well as the club. One thing is for sure, we need to support our boys more loudly. It is not that Arsenal fans cannot sing, or support, anyone who has joined the away support will understand this, the noise form these fans is often louder than some of the home support at Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers. We need to be the twelfth man more often. Please give me your ideas of how to improve the atmosphere and I will forward them onto Red Action.

BE LOUD AND PROUD…

Or give your ticket to someone who will!

Would I be going too far to say that the lack of.. errm.. “stimulants” (other than alcohol) amongst many modern young people and fans is a potential cause for less feverent support? I’ve sometimes thought that could be the case.

Plus, don’t forget about the ‘facist’ implementation of rules they have at the Grove – I think this quiets people down too. I was at the Emirates Cup game when we played AC Milan, there were four Italians a few rows in front of me being massively loud and bombastic, but not doing anything wrong other than making some children and old women look concerned. About 20 minutes later they were removed by stewards. Obviously I don’t know the details but it seemed harsh and unnecessary to me.

Good blog though, it’s an interesting point. I’m curious to see some of the replies to it!

FTK, you are right in that there is a new breed of sports fan because its not happening just in soccer or just in England. Here in the US, we have much the same issues with Football and Basketball. Many teams who have built brand new huge stadiums and arenas have thusly jacked up ticket prices and priced out the working-class “real” fans who would make all the noise and never leave early.

The NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks however came up with a good idea to try to combat this. They created a small standing room only section for maybe 100 fans and they allow those fans in for free with the caveat that they MUST stand the entire time, not leave early, paint their faces, and basically be rowdy and loud and lead the arena in chants the whole time.

  • SING UP FFS!!!!

This is one of the most important aspects of playing at HOME!!! I have been going for 15 years now, and when we were at highbury, before every game the clock end would make of point of singing every players name/song, before the game had even started. If you ever read interviews or listen, the players say it gives them an extra buzz when fans sing there names. Funny how these days we are more likely to boo a player at the emirates than actually give them some needed confidence and sing there name. I sit in the east upper and cannot beleive how SHIT the atmoesphere/fans have been pretty much since we moved. WE NEED TO SING UP. We need to sing these players names, give them that buzz during a game, gee them up get them going. THESE GUYS PLAY FOR ARSENAL THE TEAM YOU LOVE, LET THEM KNOW YOU ARE BEHIND THEM, AND MAYBE JUST MAYBE THEY WILL SHOW YOU THE LOVE BACK!!!!

    WE’RE THE EAST STAND HIGBURY : )!!!!

P.s I am group 3 & 4, just a shame the rest of the east/ clock / west are utter SHIT!!!

    Controversial GP…

Do we really need stimulants to have a good time???

I get a buzz from hearing others really belt out a great chant.

When at Highbury we had the North versus the Clock end rounds of chants, it ofetn made the hairs stand up on my forearms.
The best were the European nights at Highbury or against Tottenham.

The first five minutes of Man U versus the Gunners in that infamous Champions League semi-final gave me goosebumps too.

We need flags, hooters and voices for real atmosphere, but seeing the oppos foreign fans bouncing to a vibrant chant is aweinspiring but the stewards would eject most of us who dare try it…

    Sing up FFS,
I have to sympathesise with you. But the PA doesn’t help either. With the wonder of you and the Premeier League theme we can hardly be heard these days.

    BUT….

Too many foreign names and non acknowledgement by players means that proper songs for the players are difficult to brand.

However we are trying. We have unique songs for RVP, Rosicky, Song, Eboue, Fabregas, Vela, Clichy, Vermaelen, Chamakh,Walcott and Arshavin

We have “sort of” songs for Nasri, Diaby and Almunia

The rest are just rehashed Rosicky songs

    Super Super Jacky Wilshere etc

So this is where we need the lead from Red Action

UNIQUE SONGS FOR THE PLAYERS, then we must SHUT THE PA up with it’s pathetic childish

DEN—–NIL…… “SON replys the kids in the Emirates…”

I hate the Home team announcements, so pathetic and childish!

FTK, it’s because the Grove has been constructed to cater specifically to family-friendly and corporate crowds – so there are now officious stewards given draconian instructions designed to prevent genuine supporter expression.

Also, I notice that the acoustics of the stadium effectively muffle the loud supporter chants/cheering that exists. The first time I went to the Grove I noticed there was a LOT more fan chanting/cheering than is evident on TV but even at the stadium I felt it wasn’t as loud as it would be at older stadiums– even with the same number of fans chanting/cheering at the same level.

That’s something I notice not just watching on TV but also having now attended several games at our new home ground. It’s an impressive venue but I genuinely miss Highbury whenever I go there.

The stadium gives us comfort and convenience and caters principally to the superficial fan–and makes the loud, raucous fan noises quieter than they are. I often think that’s a damning testament to AW’s vision, since he was instrumental in the design of the thing.

    Harper,
are you really suggesting that AW wanted a quiet stadium?
I have to agree with you that the acoustics are poor, but surely you cannot design poor acoustics into a stadium???

I have to recall the Man U semi final in the CL when the flags and noise was AWESOME for five minutes at least…lol

I thought that the stadium design was to improve the acoustics, not the reverse!

I remain of the view that if we could get 20,000 fans singing in UNISON, we would get a massive improvement in sound!

I don’t think everybody needs stimulants to get a buzzing atmosphere going – I just thought that the lack of such characters among the Grove crowd these days could be a contributing factor. Take Anfield for example, you can almost smell the amphetamine seeping from the crowd during an impassioned blasting of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’. :o

You’re right when you say we need more flags, hooters and voices – the Health & Safety people in this country have killed a lot of the things that still make watching football in Germany and Holland so intense.

Whether it’s a good reason or not, I think winning our first trophy at the Grove will raise the volume level. Until then, supports should either loudly get behind the team on their own steam or, if they don’t like chanting, take a note from Otto in The Simpsons when he said: “I don’t needs drugs to enjoy this, just enhance it!” :-? ;-)

I understand your frustration, but Red Action can lead, but it is for others to FOLLOW. That is the challenge.

The last “R.I.P Rocky” day was pathetic despite having help from the Arsenal PA too.

Lets face it, there are alot of new Arsenal fans in the Stadium who refuse to sing or can’t sing.

Make the stadium a smaller capacity with genuine fans and the atmosphere will be there. We have to convert the mentality of this new breed of fan who thinks that attending a game is like going to the cinema or the opera as our commentee Shea put it so adroitly!

The only true answer to the lack of atmosphere is to bring back the standing terraces.

Before stadiums became all seater it was necessary to arrive at least half an hour before kick off in order to “bag” your favourite position. You then spent the next half hour winding up the opposition’s fans with chanting and singing.

When I regularly attended matches, prior to 1974, every Arsenal player was greeted with his own chant. Peter, Peter Simpson ooh! ooh!, Geordie, Geordie Armstrong on the wing! etc.

The atmosphere was hugely improved by the playing of stirring marches by the Metropolitan Police Band as they marched up and down the pitch with everyone ready to cheer the Drum Major when he tossed his mace high in the air and caught it, or better still dropped it, on the way down.

Now we have The Wonder of You! ffs.

I’ve heard all this stuff before and never really understood it. The Emirates actually has a better atmousphere than many other ground in the premier league (yes I have been to most of them before someone bites my head off). I can only really think of Sunderland for an atmosphere I’ve been genuinely impressed with, othetwise it’s usually very quiet. Take Old Trafford for example, pretty much silent even though we are one of their biggest games of the season.

I think this whole thing is a bit of a myth. Home fixtures are never going to be that loud any more because most of the time we stroll to victory. When things do get difficult or we have a big game then the atmousphere is usually very good (Spurs, United, Chelsea, Euro Knockouts). I also disagree with this idea that Highbury was always rocking. That’s absolute rubbish. It was much the same as the Emirates (and yes, I did go to Highbury more than 100 times).

Fair play to everyone who’s trying to improve the atmousphere as it can always get better, but at the moment it isnt THAT bad in my opinion.

My suggestion would be to coordinate through Red Action, the AST or a.another appropriate party to agree on some approved Arsenal Chants, have them regularly printed in the matchday programme (every game is ideal) with a little paragraph from the club about the benifits of singing and how it will be led by one section of the crowd (die hard corner I call it, as they always lead the singing) and that the club actively encourage everyone in the stadium to join in. That way everyone knows what to sing and would feel as though they are encouraged to do so by the club.
The biggest problem I’ve found when I’ve actually managed to get a ticket for a game is that I end up in a large section of silent fans with me looking like a tit singing on my own getting stared at by silent fans, and my self esteem and voice both take a beating!

On Saturday there was some jolly folk sh*t blasting out the speakers. WTF!!!

Everyone around me is too scared to sing. I used to sit in the North Bank Highbury, Im now in the West Upper.

I was at the Carling Cup game last week – totally different support – which may have galvinised the team to victory! Our away support is first class and superb.

Im bored with home games, its no fun!
The Club have to accept responsibility for making the stadium too family friendly and not letting the die hard supporters do their thing. RedAction need to sort this out – there is way more Arsenalisation and atmosphere changes to make!

I’ll still be there next home game – giving it my all – never giving up!

The atmosphere will never be great until there are big changes to Arsenal Football club.We have a coach who is more interested in making money than producing a team fit for the Stadium. During the summer he promised he would strengthen the sq1uad what did he do weaken it. He had know intension of buying a gkeeper, only Cesc would get into the Man Utd Or Chelsea team. With the gloom which surrounds the club what else do you expect from the fans. Until Arsenal bring in a top coach who could start rebuilding the team and make Arsenal a force to fight at the top leval The fans will never create the right answer . Also i never known a top manager like Wenger get ridiculed so much about the inability of his team. the chairman should pay ancellotti or ferguson to come aqnd mentor him so that he begins to act like a good manager.

FTK, here’s a story for you. Me, my Dad and Brother are all die-hard Gooners from Ireland, we’re over as often as we can. Our tickets are always either in the “New” Clock End above the away support or the “New” North Bank, upper tier. Me and My Dad attended the Arsenal – Spurs game in the Carling Cup Semi of ’08 and I was buzzing, ready to rock. That game was delayed 15 due to tube congestion, so more beer. Upon kickoff, the three rows behind us were empty due to the tube, so I stood for the first 10-15 mins of the game singing (no swear words), chanting, swinging my scarf. A steward came across asking me to sit down. I asked why? “Just sit down, Sir!” I asked why as all I was doing was singing, not blocking anyone’s view (as there was no-one even behind me) and not causing trouble! I was told to sit down or I’d be thrown out. Now what are we supposed to do with a club policy like that? Another time Me and my Brother were at the Inter Milan – Arsenal game in the Emirates cup and we were in the East Stand Upper, approx half way line. RVP scored a smasher to win us the game and we chanted RVP’s name for a full 10 minutes standing, (the only one’s in our section standing or singing), when we eventually sat down they all clapped us which was class, BUT all we wanted was them to JOIN IN! So your either a sit and clap quietly Gooner or a fanatic die-hard singer who risks getting chucked out and look like a head-case on your own!!

The club could,if they wanted to, help create the sort of atmosphere that existed, in the good old days, by allocating a large section of The North End to fans who want to sing, and allow season ticket holders to swap seats into or out of the singing zone to suit their own preference.

It would take a campaign by RedAction and the AST supported by those fans interested in such a move to get the club to carry out the wishes of their paying customers.

Parkheid is Irish, Catholic and the Eire flag is flown. The Lanarkshire and Glasgow Scottish Labour MPs all are members of the Celtic FC. The games before playing the Ibrox mob are purely a practice to decimate the Govan mob!!

This is an attempt to explain the rivalry between Celtic and Rangers – religion and the Troubles.

Liverpool and the Spuds have old stadia and even converting to all-seater has not affected the acoustics.

My own humble opinion is that the fans of the forties and fifties could afford the prices including the refreshments. Now the prices are outwith the so-called average wage punters’ pocket. The key is the statistic that 35% of the income comes from 9k seats if memory serves me right. The catering being outsourced means Delaware are sub-contracting the labour to another company. Poor service means delay in being served which in turn means empty seats.

    @Steve Palmer

Bloody hell Steve, are you a School Teacher or something???….lol

The best way is in the pubs that the Gooners drink in before the game.

You could never get them to turn up for Supporter homework.

But I like the idea nonetheless.

Watch the Patizan fans tonight, they will make their stadium shake like some of the German fans.

We have had our moments to at the Emirates when we sing “lets go fcuking Mental….lol”

watch this youtube clip of how it should be done. Spot the Emirates clip in there around about 50 secs in :-)

    @Notoverthehill

I heard that stat too, the cost of club level means that the ordinary fan will get ejected if they sing I suppose… bloody riff raff…. :-)

As for the catering at The Emirates…it is bloody awful for the ordinary fans.

But in the Platinum, Diamond and Club sections they have Raymond Blanc inspired menus.

Is it really us and them?

Sort it out Arsenal Football Club!!!

FTK – that was well worth following up.

    Solutions to improve are:

    1. reintroduce a standing area. Authorities will never be allow.

    2. reduce ticket prices so that the traditional working-class fan base can attend. Will never happen. (unless we drop out of the top four for a bit)

    3. The Black Scarf group (which most who visit here will not agree with) have suggested a full scale ticket “amnesty” which would allow everyone who wants to be in the North Bank or Clock End to sit there subject to people who are there happily moving. AFC will never allow.

    4. Have unreserved seating areas in NB/CE. Doubt if the club will allow.

Appreciate the logistical problems for the club with 3 and 4 but it’s do-able.

Basically we are where we are and nothing will change.

Most people of my age would have started on the NB, might have moved to the CE and then gone to the seats, but as a teenager on the terracing you learnt the songs, joined in, you hated the lot down the road after your first match. It was a “growing” experience which doesn’t exist anymore.

I am in category 5 personaly. I rarely sing when I go to the stadium to watch football. I just sit and enjoy the game, that’s why I am going to the stadium. Don’t get me wrong, I support Arsenal as much as you do, but singing is really not my thing. I sometimes “boo” though or curse the referee

My Season ticket is in Block 5, and we generally stand through most matches – the stewards try to get us to sit, but by the time they are half way up the stand, we sing a round of “stand up if you hate tottenham” and everyone stands up again. It’s a bit of a joke really. I am a 3 btw, and have to admit that I am seriously considering giving up my season ticket and going to away games only – the atmosphere with the away supporters is 100 times better than it is at Ashburton Grove.
Mind you, the game against Liverpool (sorry rubbish at remembering dates) where we had a player sent off, and whistled every time Liverpool got the ball was excellent – you could see it really affected the Liverpool players (We went on to win if I recall)

I’m late to the party here buuut…

we may be pretty standard for the Premier League but why not go that extra little bit to be better than standard. We are the Arsenal! I was always of the opinion that it is a privilege to support this team.

We should aim to be the best on the pitch AND in the stands.
