FTK Blog: Which striking partnership should we play?

Andrey-Arshavin

It used to be said of London buses that you wait ages for one, then four arrive all at once. Well that will soon be the position with regard to strikers at Arsenal. Robin van Persie is close to a return, and with Theo’s rich vein of form and Niklas Bendtner striking the ball with greater confidence, Arsene Wenger has an excellent dilemma which is, which is the best striking partnership?

The 4-3-3 formation employs a spearhead striker who will hold up the ball or act as a fulcrum for supporting runs from midfield. Marouane Chamakh has shown that he deserves to have the number one berth, yet given the high wages and profile of our dutch striker, I fear that he will become surplus to requirements when Robin returns. Yet my view is that Arsene Wenger would be ill advised to drop Marouane from the starting lineup. He has to find a way of combining Marouane with another striker if we are to win more than the Carling Cup this season.

I wrote a couple of blogs praising the potential of Chamakh before he came to Arsenal, and I am pleased that the player has not let down my expectations. He is a tireless worker for the team, he holds up the ball well, and most importantly, his runs are well timed and he rarely strays offside. His aerial ability has given Arsenal that much needed “plan B” and if we remove that option, we may find teams feeling more comfortable about parking the bus down the middle of the field where most of Arsenal’s forays occur.

So why can’t RvP and Chamkh play in the same formation? The sticking point I believe relates to Arsene Wenger’s obsession with Arshavin. Andre Arshavin has fallen from grace in my view with inconsistent performances. To put it bluntly he has become too lazy. Many of the problems with Clichy, relate to the fact that Arshavin does not defend. Watch the games of Arsenal, if Arshavin loses the ball, he refuses to run after the player to try and regain possession. He often appears exhausted after two or three runs and upon one occasion, when a substitution was being made he seemed very keen to leave the field, even though it wasn’t his number on the 4th official’s board.

Yet Arshavin’s assists and passes confirm that he is still a class act and if only he would revert back to the form in his first season, he could become a match winner. Yet I feel that a spell on the sidelines might just wake him up. The prospect of a big money transfer to Barcelona becomes less likely with each passing transfer window, so perhaps Andre needs to accept that his career will remain at the Emirates and it is here that he must make his reputation. He can become an Arsenal legend if he wants it badly enough and perhaps the new competition for a starting place as striker will be the wake up call that he needs.

Moving on to discussing the resurgence of our other strikers, Theo Walcott is finally silencing his many critics of whose number I can proudly proclaim did not include me. I have always been an immense fan of Theo and I am so pleased for the lad. The omission from this year’s World Cup was a blessing in disguise. He has rediscovered his hunger and his lack of “end product” has been exposed as a cruel immature jibe. He can now make the step up and it is mainly down to confidence, listening to his interviews, he is ready for the challenge. His pace remains awesome and he deserves a starting place in the team, but at the expense of who?

Niklas Bendtner has overcome the earlier charge that I laid at his door (making Adebayor look good). His work rate for the team put Arshavin’s to shame. His conversion of chances has suddenly improved. The goal that he struck against Newcastle last night was sublime. But before we get carried away, I still need more convincing that he will become the “world class” striker that Arsene Wenger claims he will be. If he continues to strike goals and can improve his aerial ability to equal Chamakh’s then the competition for a starting place will become very intense. I like his attitude now that he has recovered from injury, and hopefully he will prove me wrong and destroy defences in the Premier League.

Carlos Vela remains for me the best finisher at Arsenal, he seems to have not yet made the headlines that are currently being made by Theo Walcott, but I rate Carlos Vela very highly, and it is a challenge for Arsene Wenger to bring the best out of him. Oh Vela Vela, our Mexican superstar!!! I hope that we can get to the Carling Cup Final where he will show his class.

So in conclusion, Arsenal  Football Club appear to be enjoying a return of strikers who have between them different qualities and skill sets. I do not believe that we have a preferred duo for all competitions and whilst the confidence levels are high, this is where rotation needs careful planning. I would prefer Robin van Persie to play in the hole behind an aerial specialist such as Chamkh ala Dennis Bergkamp, because when he plays as lone striker, van Persie  always seems to play deeper into midfield leaving the opponents back four with plenty of room to shut down our counter attacks.

I would prefer Walcott over Arshavin for a period of time until the mercurial Russian rediscovers his hunger for things football rather than ice cream. That would make our Premier league midfield and attack as Fabregas Song Nasri, Walcott van Persie Chamakh. With injuries and suspensions and fixture congestion in the new year, the other striking partnerships could be Arshavin and van Persie, Walcott and van Persie, Bendtner and Walcott, Walcott and Chamakh and of course Arshavin and Chamakh as currently used by Arsene Wenger.

You get the feeling that only trophies at the end of the season will satisfy the players because all of them are likely to be rotated quite often.

If players like arshavin, bendtner and rosisky can’t guarantee a starting place then surely they may be tempted by another team. A trophy though should make everyone happy.

I dont thnik you can ask the question of who would be the best partnership. We play a 4-3-3. i think out best starting 11 would be

    Fab/Szczesny

    Sagna Kos/Squil Vermaelen Clichy/Gibbs

    Song Wilshere

    Cesc
    Walcott Van P/Cham Nasri

You can’t forget about Nasri who is having a fantastic campaign and banging in the goals.

I dont think we’d have enough defensive stability with a 4-4-1-1. Especially now that Song likes to get forward.

    Fabi
    sag kos verm clichy
    theo song cesc nasri
    Van P

Let’s not forget Ramsey and Jack! Maybe Arsenal will have two teams of top class attackers available soon, but let us not count the chickens as with our luck some will be injured again. But what bliss it will be if they are all fit for the first time EVER. Nasri and Cesc must play also

    Sorry Smartarse,

Wenger must not overuse Jack Wilshere, he needs to be rested and avoid career threatening injuries. He is now being targeted by other teams and until the Refs start giving such talented players the protection that they deserve, then he must not yet be a regular.

i think that bentdner is influenced by chamakh….i never saw him running like yesterday..or it seems like?)))i think that chamakh is more mature…rarely offside…and link up with other players is good…and he holds the ball very well…we should see bentdner in big games….he scored against city when the game was over…defensera were tired…and yesterday defenders without experiences…but the 2 goals are very nice

FTK – Yeah you’re probably right lol. First time I’ve commented on here so maybe it was nerves.

I do like the idea of playing Van P and Chamakh together but if Wenger were to do that i think it would be akin to the Blackpool game when Van P came on and Chamakh was pushed first the left of attack and then later to the right after more subs. I cant quite remember who came on but Cham looked comfortable across all 3 front positions which is great to offer us more options. I love the selection headache Wenger will soon have. If Walcott maintains his scoring form so far this season i think it will be difficult to leave him out. Walcott on the right and Nasri on the left i feel gives us the best cover for the full backs mixed with a massive goal threat. (i do love Rosicky’s workrate though. His shooting has been off since his injury but his link up play is still up there with the best… no surprise we’ve had some of our biggest wins with him in the line up).

We’re spoilt for choice. Great time to be an Arsenal Fan

wow it’s quite amazing how big our squad is this season we have strikers of great talent and they all seem to be of great form this season apart from arshavin
who has become sluggish thouh his statistics prove different i find chamakh good but bendtner could be beter if he perfected his aerial ability and remains consistant but i think our biggest problem comes in the midfield where we have three centre midfielders all in very top form namely nasri, wilshere, and fabregas where will they all play?and right behind them we have three great defensive players being song, denilson and when ramsey reappears it will be quite tight so realistically the only problem arsenal have is the lack of consistency with our defence who all seem to be hesitant apart from vermaelen who is currently injured koscielny plays great one game and slacks the next and sometimes look physically beaten by the hefty strikers even in pace but if all defenders gain greater confidence and physical presence then arsenal will be a battle of the positions which create’s greater competition within the team which will just increase our performance…..

It indeed is a tough decision if all are fit but I would have to go for Van Persie and Chamakh up front and play arshavin slightly forward on the left and Nasri on the right.

FTK: No one’s even mentioned Diaby, so there’s even more “embarrassment of riches” (though many would dispute that one…) Maybe the concerns should focus on the front part of your London bus analogy — i.e., to the backline, where the depth (and quality, to be frank) just isn’t there? E.g., should Song be given more of a run in the center defense, with Jack and/or Aaron along with Denilson in the deep middle, given the upfront firepower? This gets both Jack and eventualy Aaron a place on the pitch, where they belong.

    4-4-2???

Are you playing playstation football like Platini…lol

We need the extra cover on the flanks, so we employ variations of 4-3-3

    4 – 2 – 3 -1 is the commonest
then of course the much maligned
    4 – 1 – 2 – 1 – 2
the mid field diamond of this formation required stability at the base and top. Chelsea empoy this alot in some games, the weakness though is the opposing 5 man midfield.
    4 – 3 – 1 – 1 – 1

I have never understood this formation, as in essence we lose good width.

    Sczesney/Fabianski
    Sagna Vermaelen Clichy
    Song
    Nasri Fabregas Wilshere
    Walcott Chamakh RVP

Song would be a DM when we are attacking and a CB when we are defending. With TVs ball-playing skills, he could do that position with Koscienly, who’s excellent positionally, in the middle.

Sagna, Nasri and Walcott all link up well. They would form our direct wing. Also, Nasri gets his preferred berth in the center. With their goal-scoring start, can’t really drop them.

Wilshere and RVP would be an interesting combo with precise, one-touch passing. Can’t drop them either.

Fabregas and Chamakh are the pinnacle of midfield and attack, so they get straight slots in the center.

AA, Bendter, Rosicky, Vela and JET provides additional attacking options and allow us to rest players. Bring on Kos, Squillaci and Denilson for more defense.

If we played this team against Barca, we would get 65% possession. We could surely unlock even Mourhino’s Defense.

Most mouthwatering line up that i would dream of watching. With Sczenzy in Goal and TV being TV, you don’t really need extra defensive enforcements…considering that we could easily outscore our opponents. It probably is more plausible than people think given our light numbers in defense.

A lot of talk on here about team selection and I figured I would have my say….so here is my best team:

    Sagna…..Verm…..Kos…..Gibbs
    Song
    Fabregas…..Wilshere
    Walcott………………Nasri
    Chamakh

I have not put in a keeper because I think we need a new one as Fabianski has not done enough yet to prove he is over the big mistakes he has made in the past! but he is our best I will give him that (but this is Arsenal and we deserve better)

Also would like to say that although he is not in my team Arshavin is still awesome it is just that Nasri is just ahead of him for now and I feel walcott and Chamakh are essential to our tital challenge.

And just a few quick points, Djourou will be a great defender lets not forget that he has been injured for a LONG time and I for one think he has done alright! Diaby also is a great player already he just needs to get his fitness back up and speed up his game a little, And all tis talk of Wilshere not being ready is just plain stupid!! you cant wrap him up in cotton wool and to be honest I dont think for a second he would let you he is small but a complete beast, and a complete player too….I say throw him in to learn from Fabregas and make him a great! FTK, you seem to have forgotten something AW said about the new rules coming into force in the near future!
With all 4 (FOUR) trophies up for graps that is a lot of football to play. With injuries, the new (or Adams, Viera old style) for additional cards and missing matches, loss of form, fatigue etc., etc.
AW and his attention to detail is second to none. Bedbugs are supposed to be rampant in New York, I trust those who will nit-pick are deluged in a plague of bed bugs and nits for their trouble.
Arshavin I am afraid is too busy with his new financial ventures at the moment. Running his own business (es) does take its toll. Arshavin is a Gunner, you can forget the Barcelona tag for what it was – trophies, trophies. Who tops the Russian Premier League?

AW seems to have overcome his over-30 thingy. AW was replying to a couple of Russians when the Arshavin extension came up. Quite a few Russian now treat The Emirates as THEIR stadium!

    Behind Clichy we have Gibbs!

Behind Fabregas (or along side him at the moment) we have Wilshere and soon the returning Ramsey will hopefully return and find his form to compete for that same place!

Behind Song we have either Diaby (should he become a proper defensive midfielder) and also a player that will be HUGE in Frimpong! who I see maybe partnering Wilshere in years to come!

And with Walcott soon becoming (I hope) a striker to partner Chamakh things will open up for the others in the midfield.

I agree that the landscape is changing, and that Arsene Wenger is a visionary. He revolutionised football with his dietary philosophy in 1996. His creation of a youth dynasty is without comparison, and finally Wengerball is the real definition of total football.

Arshavin needs to wise up however, sometimes extensions to the contract are to enable a good return to the selling club…lol

It was noted the other day that rednose has now exceeded 100 games without keeping the same lineup. B’ham against us had just played the same lineup for its 11th game. And therein lies the difference. Arsenal, in a post significant injury phase, have the squad to make the changes, necessary maybe even better than manure, for the opponent we are facing on the day. whether arshavin starts is not nearly as important as whether he contributes. same with RVP or b-52 or chams upfront or Diaby, denilson wilshire or fabs at midfield.

horses for courses and lets enjoy using the squad in a way that precludes injuries and burnout and fully allos us to attack the weaknesses of our opponent.

And if it is a “kick em up” opponent we can protect some of our more fragile assets.

FTK, I hear Gibbs did a medial ligament strain. So expect him to be out for 3-6 weeks. It’s not his fault of course but his body does seem to be a bit like RVP’s, very injury prone?????.

As a striker or working just behind the main striker RVP when fit is awesome. Key to this is “when fit”.

Purely as players and given their body strengths (or not) would you prefer RVP or Tevez? I think most wouldn’t pick RVP.

Since his arrival to Arsenal has RVP played 50% of available EPL or CL games?

Generally speaking, if the likelihood of injury increases as a player ages, what are we expecting of RVP going forward? The other thing is that RVP seems to get injuries that linger for months rather than weeks.

Arsenal is a well run business and its success over time will be measured by its financial sustainability and winning trophies. So having said this is RVP a player arsenal keeps or does arsenal cash him in and find a replacement?

I think we should look to fit them all in.

    Fabianski
    Arshavin TV5 Kos Wilshere
    Walcott Fabregas Nasri
    Bendtner Chamakh RVP

    On the bench:

Wojcech, Ramsey, Sagna, Squillaci, Song, Rosicky, Diaby

The only concern I have is Arshavin when he is up against a big man. He may be slightly susceptible in the air. :D

And I know alot of people will think we may be a little weak defensively in this line-up, but jesus would we score bucket loads of goals!!!

i don’t know about that FTK, i rate bendtner highly but before that quality strike he let off alot of sub-par shots that were either at the keeper or soft as mud.

haha quality, god if arshavin doesnt track back on the wings what sort of holes would he leave at right back?! Make it even more attacking and put JET in place of Kos, after all he used to be a CB.

    i think it should be:
    Szcesny
    Sagna TV5 Kos Gibbs
    Song
    Fabregas Nasri
    Walcott Chamakh RVP

Then you have rotations of ramsey, clichy, wilshere, squillanci, arshavin, bendy, yeck the whole team is looking good atm. For once though it would be nice if we had minimal to no injuries. Like the fact that chamakh seems durable. Fear gibbs is the new RVP, he gets injured very easily, the challenge with routledge wasnt much at all. hope he has a speedy recovery! come on you gunners!

I am a bit surprised that you still rate Vela very highly. At first i also thought this but am increasingly frustrated that every time he gets an opportunity now he lets it pass him by. I really hope he turns out to prove me wrong but i think Wenger may cash in on him sooner rather than later.

    Squillaci needs time DJ

    I’d still have Clichy though

    @roachy

Precisely the problem now with Gibbs, RvP was not so injury prone until International duty. Would I cash in RvP?

    BIG NO,

We need world class players to set roles for the yoof coming through.

this Szczesny is the dog testicles mate…

He will take over Fabianski’s spot within 12 months if we don’t buy Pepe Reina…

I fear that you are right mate,

But let’s be fair, Vela has never had an extended run in the team.

If he did, he would prove that he really is awesome

Actually Carlos has the best numbers in the current season.

2 goals in the Champions and 1 in the League with 0 (ZERO!) starts.

he sure is, what composure and skill for a keeper so young. I hope we dont buy reina, yeah hes good but fabianski has been doing well so far (lets hope it stays that way…im hoping it will because he seems to have his confidence back), and let szczesny play backup. I just hope when almunia comes back he doesnt settle into the number 2 spot, because atm i would rather diaby in goal over him
