FTK Blog: Arsene, what is needed are actions not words…

I am wishing all readers of this blog a Happy New Year, but as we see the back of 2010, I cannot in all honesty feel confident about the next few months. Arsenal’s inconsistency has now become a joke for me. I have been a firm supporter of Arsene Wenger, and his methods, but even now as the year draws to a close. I am like so many other loyal Gooners  entitled to express exasperation and frustration at the inability of this highly talented squad to make the final push over the line. The Championship race has never been so open. We appear to be on the brink of success, but each time we stumble. My  following comments must be seen in perspective. The season is only halfway through, so the loss of two points at Wigan can be easily compensated for. Neither is it a full blown crisis as Vermaelen will be back in a matter of weeks.  I believe that Arsene Wenger is the greatest manager in the Club’s history, but what I fear is that his legacy will be become tarnished.
The stuttering inconsistency of Arsenal is ever more baffling when one considers that this is happening at a time when frankly the Premiership Title is there for the taking,  I remain a very firm fan of Arsene Wenger, I will support him to the hilt but not unreservedly. Whilst his private life is not my business. I have seen parallels of other players and managers who have distractions in their private lives which have clearly affected their performances. I just wonder how much his focus is on what the future holds in Paris rather than at the Emirates. The recent spate of results also confirm that some players are overpaid for what they deliver or rather fail to deliver.  Success begins at the back, without a decent goalkeeper we will only win the Carling Cup. I have always regarded the Carling Cup as a mickey mouse trophy, and frankly I will not see this as a triumph. Why?
Well as the parental advisory chant goes…
COS  WE ARE THE ARSENAL ! AND WE ARE THE BEST!!!
WE ARE THE ARSENAL SO F*** ALL THE REST!
What is needed from Arsene Wenger are actions not words. I am frankly bored and dismayed by the ritual outpouring of excuses…
The best deserves more than the Carling Cup. So as we look forward to the challenge of Barcelona in the new year, there remains work to be done. In the transfer window we should buy a keeper. Fabianski has lost it I’m afraid. There are echoes of the mistake that was made by England’s then number one Paul Robinson, who missed a simple kick due to a divot when against Croatia in the Europe 2008 qualifier. The rest is history, as this keeper lost confidence and never recovered. It takes talent and determination to recover from a mistake, and Fabianski has been on the end of more ritual humiliation than Paul Robinson ever had to deal with. But now he cuts a sad figure, hardly daring to come out and challenge for crosses, and when he does, it seems uncertain and lacking confidence. He will be targeted as Arsenal’s weakest link and rightly so. Arsene Wenger must either give Szczesny the nod or buy a keeper in the Transfer window. Finally it is time to get rid of the squad players who continually fail to step up to the plate. I won’t name them, but to be honest we all know who they are.
Happy New Year All!
