The recent news that Ryan Babel has been fined, to the tune of £10,000 and warned about his future conduct after posting comments and a doctored picture of Howard Webb, got me on the search for Arsenal players on Twitter. Whist many people consider Twitter as a place where celebrity egos thrive as stars watch their ‘followers’ grow, it’s surely the perfect place for the average football to post his musings.
So I decided to track down the Arsenal players. Could there be any worth or insight on the team? Who’s best mates with who? Any information on Arsene? With no Arsenal players reaching tabloid headlines with inappropriate tweets, (not even the outspoken Bendtner) I could only assume that the team were well versed in Twitter PR, more so than some leading politicians, but that’s another matter altogether…
So here’s my round up so far, I’ll be keeping tabs on the boys over the next few weeks then I’ll let you know who’s worth following and who’s just not that interesting.
1. The captain, the main man, Cesc
@cesc4official
Every other tweet is in Spanish, but a couple of Google translates later and an insight into conversation with @3gerardpique does little to calm the Arsenal-to-Barcelona worries. Posts some nice photos of the team, rallies support and performs the obligatory team apology after a bad game. A true captain’s performance.
3. Jack Wilshire
@jack_wilshere
If you find teammate Fifa banter, TV and early nights of interest, then this is the account to follow.
4. Robin Van Persie
@Persie_Official
Definitely takes the role of more senior Arsenal player, dishing out advice to anyone who asks, teammates and the public alike. Comes across as an intelligent family man.
Samir Nasri
@Nanas08
One of the less interesting accounts.
Johan Djourou
@JohanDjourou
Self reflecting in his match performances, it’s great to see a player respond to tweets from the fans, particularly about questionable performances.
Denilson
@_denilson15
Don’t bother, unless you can speak Portuguese.
Wojciech Szczesny
@53Szczesny53
Some nice insights, he walks the line of saying something controversial and isn’t afraid to speak his opinion.
Those are the main accounts but you can also check out:
Emmanuel Frimpong
@EmmanuelF4
Sanchez Watt
@sanchezwatt
Henri Lansbury
@henri_lansbury
I’ll let you make your own mind up about this one.
So, pretty tame from the Arsenal players. It’s hard to see any of them getting into any trouble for speaking their mind. Although it’s not as revealing as I’d hoped, its good to hear from players outside of the scripted pre/post match interviews. Celebrities on twitter polarise opinions, I think it breaks down barriers between fans and players, what do you think? Does anyone care what players do outside of football or is it a way to feel more connected with the team?
