Tiki-Taka Comes To Call – Yes, We Can!

emptyemirates

Writing this blog a few hours from kick-off I can’t help but get excited about the possibility of taking on FC Barcelona in the Champions League tonight at the Grove.

The Catalan giants are a formidable proposition on the park. They lack little and have the best player in the world in Lionel Messi. Wherever you look there’s quality in their side. They’re also very organised tactically, something for which they’re not given the credit they deserve. Even where they’re not world class they’re competent, such as goalie Victor Valdés. He’s not world-class but he’s steady and competent.

I just hope we give the best possible account of ourselves tonight. We didn’t do ourselves justice against them last season, especially in the first half of the first leg at home. We gave them far more of a game in the second half. Out in Catalonia we were undone by the genius of Messi who played all over us, especially Mikaël Silvestre, a player whose signing wasn’t Arsčne Wenger’s finest capture.

We have to believe we can beat Barça or we won’t. Going out and bowing down to their undoubted qualities as individuals and as a team will guarantee we end up on our rear end. I still worry about our tactical weaknesses and mental brittleness. We panic far too easily, as was graphically demonstrated at St James’ Park recently. We can’t afford either if we’re to go into the draw for the quarter finals after the second leg in the Camp Nou.

All that said, we have to have the confidence to go out and have a go at them. And we have a role in the stands too. We need to drive on the team with waves of sound and passion cascading down from the stands onto the pitch, especially when we’re under the cosh. At some stage we have to have the ambition and desire to break through the glass ceiling which has seen as plateau as the eternal bridesmaids.

We have to combine art with a hard, ruthless edge. That doesn’t mean clogging the opposition or cheating. It means standing up to them. Spurs beating Milan in the San Siro last night should push us on. Do we really want to go out of a competition before them in which we have more than a decade of experience when they’re Champions League virgins? No, thought not.

Let’s do our part in the stands to turn the Grove into a fortress tonight.

Keep the faith!

dan that f**king mung is at it again. . . im pretty sure that, even if you go through, you will never even get to a final, this year you wont get top 4, cos lets be realistic, chelsea wont allow it. and you beat the shittest ac milan team iv seen in the last decade… that performance …. even wolves would have done well there. think its fuckin hilarious that you say the champions league is fantastic… your a virgin, 1st and last tme motherf**ker, you aint got pedigree and you wont compete in it next season, so easy mate, enjoy europa idiot.

I don’t agree with you about 4th Coob23 , I fully understand why you make those comments though, but you are forgetting United play Chelsea twice and I do not see a chelsea that will beat United in both games therefore Chelsea must drop at least 3 points, spurs still go to the bridge and we still entertain you guys, now whilst I would take 3 points at the emirates and a draw at whl , and a draw at the lane and at the bridge , i fail to see how man city and chelsea will keep us out of the top 4 , they cannot do it with the games they have to play , if we perform to last nights levels we will beat chelsea at the bridge anyway on current chelsea form..I am afraid we are in it again next year too ..

dunno, chelsea have 2 much strength in terms of money as do city, and you will drop off in these months… it always happens wit virgin teams. plus a greenhouse aint much of a step up to a shed, id say its more like a shed to a castle. . . and you give yourself way 2 mcuh credit for noise… and in the end, your still shit. sack you off now, bigger things on my mind, like having a shit

If we go out and “have a go” at the best footballing side that I’ve ever seen then things won’t work out. The only reason teams like Sporting get results against The Catalans is because of the cliched team bus parked up in front of goal. The way I see it the only way of stopping Barca is incompatible with the free flowing football that we play. If we attack in force then yeah we’ll score but open the pitch up too many times and there’s the space Barce need for their devastating style of football.

We need to put our beautiful football to one side and sneak it on the break or from a set piece. It’s a mistake not to be playing Chamakh. His head and Theo’s pace is all we need to beat these lot.

Take the game to Barca and we’ll get taken to the cleaners! If we stay focussed and defensively-minded yet clinical then we can win.

We can spend our time playing pretty football on our way to winning the league. I’m all for that. But there’s a time and a place!

YOu might be right mate, but let’s face it, chances are low!! Sure, defensive play will be safer and will restrict them, but they will have a lot of possession – your boys wontbe used it it. Messi 40 goals in 34 games. Ridic.

Koscielny superb a great victory but sadly not enough , messi wont miss 128 one on ones in the nou camp ..good effort but not enough im afraid ..

Fair enough messi missed a relatively easy chip but credit should go to the big pole for spreading large and perhaps forcing the error. Great game from a number of players. What a cool finish from arshavin. A return leg against a pique-less barcalona and a fully fit nasri, bring it on i say! great win and good job from the fans!

are those 40 scored in La Liga. outside the top 4 the standard is very poor there. It’s a bit like the scottish league. Obviously it doesn’t make him bad, but those stats mean nothing.

you are probably correct (rare for a spud) but to beat them here is better than any other PL team would do this season. If we get a ref that views fouls the same way no matter what colour shirt you’re wearing then we stand a reasonable chance at their place though.
