Carling Cup stats spell lift-off for Wenger

carlingcup

by CARL ELDRIDGE Winning the Carling Cup would be the springboard to a minimum top two Premier League finish for Arsenal, according to new Opta statistics (come, come, chaps – you know we’re going to pip United). Opta say over the past ten years the winner of the competition has achieved a 10% increase in points gathered for the remainder of the season, enough to guarantee a runners-up position at least.

Opta data compiled for this weekend’s Carling Cup Final reveals that for the successful team the average points haul per league game rises from 1.81 to 1.99 after the final. Winning finalists have also gone on to do well in other competitions with Liverpool claiming the FA Cup and UEFA Cup in 2001, Chelsea winning the FA Cup in 2007 and Manchester United winning the Premier League in 2009.

However, the stats say a defeat could spell another barren season for AW – over the past decade losing finalists who were still involved in all four major competitions ended up with nothing at the end of the season. This has already happened to us following their 2007 our to Chelsea before the Stamford Bridge outfit suffered the same fate a year later, ending the season empty-handed.

Opta Director of Marketing Simon Banoub said: “The Carling Cup Final looks like a genuine crossroads for Arsenal – the stats suggest that if they win, the outlook is very bright.  If they lose, it could spell a very tough run-in for the Gunners. The football world will be looking on with great interest.”

Come on you rip-roaring Reds!

Carling Cup stats spell lift-off for Wenger… or disaster.

These are very interesting stats and it just shows the importance of this game, especially for a team that gets almost ridiculed for not winning a trophy in the last 5 seasons.

I’m very much looking forward to the game but like most fans I am quite nervous about the outcome. Birmingham are the sort of team that we don’t like playing against and they will be really fired up and as FTK has said, injuries to our players is a realy possibility.

Lets hope the players also have a bit of this nervousness and that they go out and play with the commitment and belief they showed against barcelona and not the lacklustre complacency against Orient.

This season we have been dealing with the physical teams much better though and if we pass the ball quickly and sharply they won’t be able to get near us, hopefully.

Also the tone of the match may well be set by the ref who needs to have a good game. And by that I don’t mean a good game I mean one where he isn’t biased against Arsenal!

    Uh Oh!

    Mike Dean? Unbiased?

Interesting analysis by a referee supporting my comment.

I know its a long shot but strange things can happen in football. Fair enough Mike Dean unbiased would probably be a bit too strange though. Ok he is biased against Arsenal for whatever reason but we can only hope that there aren’t any big decisions because it is likely they will go against us.

Yeah the referee stats and observations on that website are excellent and its worth reading the referee previews before every game where you will be warned to expect the worst from certain refs and then when it happens you might not be so surprised and angry! Still doesn’t make it ok though.

Newer analysis of Dean’s bias against Arsenal here:

Well…we’re truly fooked then, Dean’s worse than I thought based on the opinion of a referee.

Mr. Broeckx is correct, why isn’t Dean pulled aside and reprimanded for his glaring ignorance of the laws of the game.
