Another Scrappy Day At The Office!!!

Marouane-Chamakh-Arsenal

Premier League title-chasers Arsenal overcame a two-goal deficit and a calamitous error from Manuel Almunia to salvage a 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns.

Steven Reid scored his first league goal for almost a year to give the Baggies a third-minute lead, before a repeat of Manuel Almunia’s antics from the 3-2 defeat at the Emirates Stadium allowed Peter Odemwingieto double the home side’s advantage as the hour mark approached.

Andrei Arshavin reduced the deficit with a high-quality strike before Robin van Persie pounced from close range to score a scrappy leveller that keeps Arsenal’s title hopes alive.

The draw sees the gap between Arsenal and leaders Manchester United increase to five points following the Red Devils’ win over Bolton, while West Brom remain just a point above the relegation zone.

Arsenal’s FA Cup defeat to Manchester United last weekend resulted in defender Johan Djourou being added to their lengthy list of key players out injured, a crisis which has led to 41-year-old goalkeeper Jens Lehmann signing a short-term deal, and the veteran took his place on the bench as Almunia’s understudy.

Almunia’s disastrous performance against West Brom back in September could well have been his last appearance for the club. Instead, he has returned to the side and hampered his team’s bid for the only trophy they remain in contention for this season.

The absence of midfielders Cesc Fabrgeas, Alex Song and Theo Walcott also resulted in the inclusion of Aaron Ramsey, making his first start for Arsenal since breaking his leg against Stoke in February of last year.

West Brom were denied the services of striker Carlos Vela under the terms of his loan from Arsenal, but they soon found themselves ahead nonetheless.

Republic of Ireland international Reid easily rose above his marker Jack Wilshere – who at five-foot-seven is a full five inches shorter than Reid – to send a solid header past Almunia. That goal means that Arsenal have only kept one clean sheet in the 12 Premier League matches which Laurent Koscielny and Sebastien Squillaci have started together.

As is so often the case when things are not going right for Arsenal, they controlled the majority of the possession but struggled to break into the final third of the opposition half. In fact, it took James Morrison’s 10-minute removal from play for the Gunners to fashion their only clear chance of the first half.

Scotland midfielder Morrison clashed heads with Koscielny, and was led down the tunnel to have his cut treated and head bandaged.

In his absence, Gael Clichy motored down the left wing and chipped his cross in to Robin van Persie. The Dutch striker saw his looping header come back off the crossbar, and Ramsey’s follow-up effort was blocked by goalkeeper Scott Carson.

Both managers made changes at the break, with Roy Hodgson swapping the combative Paul Scharner with Marek Cech while Arsene Wenger introduced Marouane Chamakh for the ineffectual Denilson.

Wenger then threw on Nicklas Bendtner too after seeing Chris Brunt slide in and send Cech’s low cross wide from close range and Van Persie head Ramsey’s free-kick wide.

Just moments after the Dane’s introduction, however, Arsenal were two down. Odemwingie beat Squillaci to a long ball forward and Almunia inexplicably came racing out of his area to try and intercept it. Odemwingie knocked the ball round the faltering pair and rolled it into the empty net for his 10th league goal of the season.

West Brom continued to frustrate Arsenal at the other end and it took something special for the Gunners to make the breakthrough.

That came on 70 minutes when Arshavin exchanged passes with Chamakh on the edge of the box before hammering a strike past Carson to give Arsenal hope of a comeback.

Van Persie then pulled them level in far less spectacular fashion eight minutes later. Bendtner nodded Arshavin’s cross back in from the far post, and the ball got stuck under Abdoulaye Meite’s feet. Van Persie pounced to see the ball trickle agonisingly over the line for his 15th goal of the season and 14th of 2011.

Both sides had chances to claim victory, with substitute Marc-Antoine Fortune’s mesmerising run through Koscielny andSamir Nasri only denied a goal by Squillaci’s diving block before Clichy had a half-volleyed effort saved by Carson.

But, in the end, the sides each left with a point. While that may not aid either’s cause as much as they would have hoped, it certainly left Almunia a very relieved man.

I’m sick of it, I left the game today and was fully expecting Wenger to rip into the team and say it just isn’t good enough if we are trying to win the league.
BUT NO! I have heard on the way back the following: I’m proud we showed the tremendous mental strength not to lose the game.
FU*K off, HOWS THAT FOR MENTAL STRENGTH?

The players showed 70mins of rubbish and expect us to be ok with that? The manager certainly should not be happy and yet he backs them time and time again.
I have always backed Wenger but he is turning this season and the club into a laughing stock, questions must be answered and his future has to be one of those questions.

Where are the extremists now, who tell you to burn in hell, when you criticize? Our only hope is that the injured first teamers come back and manage to outscore the opposition. It’s only a very vague hope. I lost all my trust in these c.nts and we need wonders to win the league. To be fair it would be even unfair. If an unbalanced team like that can win the premier league then its value is shit. Shitemunia, Shitachi and Denilshit fuck off you animals. I would beat you up personally you c.nts. The only cup I would give you is a toilet cup. This season is becoming a nightmare, as everybody starts raping our arse.

I totally agree with you the gooners. I for one have been saying this for long. Some Arsenal fans think Wenger is indispensable. Let me all of you IN-ARSENE-WE-BELIEVEs” Arsenal will not win any silverware as long as Wenger doesn’t change his way. He’s too arrogant and stubborn. I don’t know where a world class manager will parade the crops junk players we have in Arsenal now. DIABY, DENILSON, SQUILLASI, CHAMACK, ALMUINIA and now resigned Lehmann. This is incredible. My fellow gooners, Arsenal is a worldwide brand. Bigger than any body. Its time we have to rise up and speak in one voice. enough is enough. We have to match on to Arshburton grove and protest this menace happening to our beloved football club. I am tired of having my heart in my hands. If Wenger could say he’s proud of the mental of the boys today then He doesn’t know what he’s doing and time has come for him to leave. To top up the nonsense they increase ticket fees. What happiness have they brought to us that they have to raise the fees up. They are really pushing us to wall now and we have to stand up and talk in one voice. I am very sure we the aggrieved ones are very much more than the IN-ARSENE-WE-BELIEVEs. We pay his salary and without us the board has nothing to share so we have to vex our hanger. We have to let them know enough is enough. I love Arsenal as much as I love my daughter and you bi*ch do not ask me to join another club because I say my mind. You dictators… Gooners for life!

yes the fans have the right to be angry and yes some of the players aren’t very good but face the fact that Wenger isn’t going to be sacked (and before you start calling for a takeover by some billionaire, that isn’t going to happen either) so quit moaning about Wenger and support the team, at least until the end of the season when we can have a proper think about the whole thing.

Also simply saying “sack Wenger” isn’t going to make us any better. It all depends on the manager that comes in so if anyone can name a manager who has a track record as good as wenger who is available RIGHT NOW then I would love to hear it.

finally a reasonable comment on here. Yes i understand the frustration, and we could well be out of the race now thanks to this ridiculous performance. However the season is still on and there is a chance we can still grab the league (united need a stuff up to win themselves), so support the team for christ sake. Let wegner be judged at the end of the season!

What is worrying though is his stubborness with players, i mean almunia is all we have left so he had to play, but he should of been canned ages ago. As for squidge i swear he is a walking error, he somehow manages to bring kozza down with him, yet when they play with djourou they both play good.We need someone like vidic who owns the penalty box on the ground and in the air, regardless of who he is marking he gets to the ball and gets it out of there, leaving ramsey to mark a player with no help that close to goal is criminal! Denilson…enough said.Diaby, injured AGAIN god he is a waste of space, so so very inconsistent.

Personally i’d chucked lehmann in, partner song (when he gets back) with kozza, and let young jack play the defensive role. Its not ideal but with jack, cesc, nasri, walcott in midfield at least we can out score the opposition.

As for mental strength, wegner has got to be mad, i hope he ripped into the team after that performance, because what a joke it was! The only passion you see in the team is from RVP,nasri and young jack. Someone needs to start handing out arse kickings to these players. F*cking sack that ‘yes man’ rice and bring in keown, he’d do it!

To be honest guys it is pointless commenting on it, your manager has his head up his arse and won’t buy a central defender and a keeper, and ours won’t buy the forward we need and keeps relying on his dwarf West Ham pal who couldn’t hit a cows arse with a banjo !

sick of it all, 2 huge clubs in North London with the ability to sell out any away end in the uk and we get treated like F**king Idiots !

Better track record the last five years then wenger: Van Gaal, The special one, Hiddink, SAF,Daglish,Capello,Dechamps,Blanc etc. There are plenty of managers out there who has performed better than wenger lately.

  • SuperRob7

And which of those managers is available right now?? Let me answer for you. None of them. I’m not disputing there are better managers than Wenger I’m asking someone to name a manager who is available to replace wenger if he were sacked tomorrow.

I’m not completely against the idea of a change of manager but now clearly isn’t the right time.

By the way of course Wenger has to say that his players showed spirit because he has to try and convince his players they have spirit. Its clear they are lacking in confidence and the ‘fans’ keep on letting them know they are rubbish so someone has to try and give them some confidence. They aren’t going to achieve anything if they don’t believe they can. Perhaps you don’t agree and think that giving them a bollocking would help and once in a while that is effective but it shouldn’t be done in public in my opinion.

That is ok! Do you agree with the following, that wenger has built a team around a player that only plays 50% of the games, and that is why we have to sell him and we will. And when he dosen`t play we have to play 4-4-2. I have said for many years now that we woun`t win a thing as long as build around Cesc, he is our best player, but he dosn`t fit in.

only difference there is twitchy tries to sign ever striker on the planet for a ridiculous price, yet no-one wants to play for the scum. While our manager wont pull out the wallet to buy ANYONE, and if he does he gambles over 2 cents. e.g fighting over half a million for swarzer (spelling way off but who can spell his name?!). I rekon if vidic was available for 20 million he would offer manu 8 million, say the market is overpriced then buy johnathon woodgate for 2 million.

The mix-up b/w Almunia and Squillaci for the 2nd goal conceded was amusing; bunch of clowns (Almunia actually pushed Squallaci away to off-balance him!! Self-destruct!!) in a circus act.

Will they keep us entertained for the remaining 9 league games? (In Arsene the ringmaster, we trust … for the act to continue. Hmmm ….)

The team would do well playing 4-2-4 the next match, if our injured players are still unavailable. (please do not include The Invisible Wall, a.k.a “You Don’t See Me” Denilson, in 1st team)

Just Nasri and Wilshere in the middle and play our 4 strikers from the start (Arshavin, RVP, Chamakh, Bendtner). We might as well pinned the other team at their own half, since our defence is unreliable at the moment.

  • SuperRob7

yeah we can’t defend, we don’t seem to be able to play our passing game properly so we may as well just play with Bedntner and Chamakh through the middle with rvp on the left and Arshavin on the right (to make it easier for them to cross it).

This is the plan b that we went to on saturday and it worked (but I didn’t hear anyone credit Wenger with this tactical master stroke! lol).

  • M.E.

Unfortunately, we only changed to that 4-2-4 when we were 0-2 down and really lucky to rescue 1 point. Denilson should not have started (neither Ramsey as well, in my opinion, we could have use him as an option to sub in for either Wilshere or Nasri in 2nd half)

We should always have played the strongest side and to our team’s best strength in attack where available (regardless of the formation; 4-3-3, 4-4-2, 4-2-4, 3-5-2, 5-3-2 etc). Arsene failed to recognise the better fit of players to use the 4-2-4 right from the start (of this match) and we were made to chase the game (due to the deficiencies of certain players)

Who should get the blame for picking a bad set of players to start a match? (Arsene as the manager of course, but the assistants – Rice and Primorac, should also share part of the blame as well)

Lastly, the axis of Almunia-Squillaci-Koscielny means we would be fragile and vulnerable at the back for most of the time. (i.e. we might see more ridiculous goals being conceded sadly)
