So Close, But Yet So Far Away…

arsenal_fans2

by MIKE HARVEY Let me start off by saying that I have always been a big fan of Robin van Persie, since he first entered the Arsenal scene in 2004. His passion for success, his determination to win and his naturally-born talents are absolutely superb. It’s obvious that these opinions are shared by Arsene Wenger, who has always been a big believer of Robin van Persie.

So why is a part of me doubting his position at the club?

I’ll get straight to the point. I don’t think he’s the right man to lead the line in a Championship winning side.

There’s no doubt that his ability is fantastic. He’s the stereotype of a typical Dutch footballer, who oozes world class skills at times and as we’ve seen over the years, he’s pulled off some unforgettable moments of brilliance. But he’s also shown, in my opinion, that he’s a very frustrating player to watch week in, week out – when he’s not injured of course!

Despite our injury problems at the back (which seem to be getting worse and worse every week!), I feel we should have bought another striker. And I’m not talking about another Nicklas Bendtner (obviously!) or Eduardo Da Silva, or anyone else as “back-up”. I’m talking about a big money offer for a world class striker. Not only someone who would score us 20+ goals a season, but also a player who possesses great speed and acceleration attributes, that could be used to ignite fear into the defence of any team.

Admittedly, I don’t keep in touch with any of the staff on the Arsenal scouting system, so suggesting an exact name would be unfair on myself. Nevertheless, someone like David Villa of Barcelona would be ideal – but realistically, someone for a little less money. Although the Catalan giants spent £34m to acquire his signature, which to be honest, is a bargain when you see Andy Carroll go for more. Whether we could invest a similar amount of cash, I don’t know. I’ll leave that one up to you…

But hypothetically, just imagine if we had David Villa in our side. He is fast. He can finish well. His movement off the ball is utterly brilliant. But most importantly, he has one of the best footballing brains in the modern game. It’s always easy to dream that we could have someone like him in our side and yes, it was never going to be easy, but we’ve never replaced Thierry Henry with a consistently-class striker. And I feel a player like Villa would solve our problems.

I’m not saying that we should give up on van Persie and get rid of him, as clearly, he’s a great asset to our team. Maybe we could try putting him on the wing in a 4-3-3 (or 4-5-1) formation and try Marouane Chamakh – or a new signing – in the centre-forward position. In my opinion, we need someone who can offer more in the centre-forward role, specifically. We could also try changing our formation to a 4-4-2 and start with two strikers, but I’ll do myself a favour and avoid that debate, because it will just get too complicated and I won’t get my point across…

Of course, times are hard at the moment and maybe that would explain why even I understand that I might be being a tad harsh here on our Dutch striker. Although I accept that what I’m feeling at the moment is just human instinct.

We are so close to winning the league. We are just 9 league games away from claiming our first title since 2004. But like we’ve seen pretty much every campaign since we were “invincible”, it appears that we are just about to fall at the last hurdle. Unfortunately, it’s too late to bring in anyone now. But I believe that if we were able to bring in someone a little more direct that could play up top in these remaining 9 games, we would win the league. It’s just frustrating that we’re just ONE player away from becoming Champions of England.

Despite our noble efforts to come back and leave with a point at The Hawthorns, we still can’t ignore the fact that we were 2-0 down to a, let’s be honest, rather average West Brom side. We allowed them to score two incredibly cheap goals, with poor decision making and defensive errors. It’s safe to say, that we should have never got ourselves into that position. If we had defended well, I doubt we would have conceded and we then could have gone on and played in a much more comfortable game.

We’re approaching April and we are still very much in the title race. But if we make more defensive mistakes like we saw on Saturday, we will have no chance of being crowned champions in May. With just the league to concentrate on now, I believe it’s perfectly acceptable to think that every player will have enough time to focus for every game, and give solid performances throughout, right up until the end of season showdown at Craven Cottage, on May 22nd.

I still believe we can do it, but we aren’t exactly doing ourselves any favours at the moment.

I'm 20 and have been an Arsenal season ticket holder since 2006. My family has had Arsenal links since the 1920's, and the support is still going strong. I am at every home game, and also manage to get to multiple away games, when I can. I have been writing for various blogs and websites since I was 15, but have now settled down and have become a regular writer for Arsenalinsider. I also run my own Pro Evolution Soccer blog, Only Pro Evolutions. Arsenal is my passion. Writing is my passion. I was never good enough to play for The Arsenal, so I'll do the next best thing!

The only problem with VP is his injury record. He is easily good enough to lead the line for any team, I honestly believe that.
While on the subject of world-class players, what about between the sticks? If AFC only make one major signing in the Summer, I want a world class keeper. The Carling cup would probably be in the bag now if we had – and think of the points we would have saved in games with a proper keeper. I like Sczesny, but at his age, he should be proud to be no.2. Almunia out, Fabianski out, quality in please.
Every squad has its Denilsons, its Eboues etc. Id accept our fringe players failings if we had a top notch keeper.
That hole has been in our team too long.

RVP is not world class, he hasn’t done it on a consistent basis to be called world class.

Cesc is the only world class player in our squad, Arshavin used to be world class.

a good option to try 442 or variations of it. nothing we can do about our back four for this season. But Arsene can still has options to adjust our forwards and mid. It’s a win or nothing situation, so desperate situation calls for more risky alternates. Nothing venture nothing gain, so to speak !!
Yes, would it be great to have a Villa type forward, I prefer him over RVP because Villa is a lot more pacey and deadly at goal. Alas, it’s a dream.
9 games before the season ends. I would think as long as we’re on par with Manu before May, the last 4 games would decide who’s the champion. Our team should be physically more fit than Manu because they have to play in the CL and FA cup, in this sense we’ve a advantage. I’m looking ahead to the last 3 matches after home to Manu, Stoke, Aston Villa and Fulham, if they remain in mid table without worries of relegation, then Arsenal’s chance to win all is a lot more clear with purpose because the other 3 teams don’t need to fight to stay alive.

So you think a david Villa type of striker would solve all our problems, i would like to shoot down that idea by using a few names.Denilshit,Abou babou,Clichshit,Rosicknote,The Spanish Waiter,Flapianski,Bend it like Bendtner and miss from three yards etc.To many second and third rate players, even a david villa type striker couldnt help this miserable bunch of losers.

Wenger says he will respect his contract. This means he will continue as manager. But other managers have not been so lucky.Although they have just repeat just signed the contract, they are still sacked if results are poor. Wenger has escaped with poor results the last six years meaning he did not not win anything.Yes I know the gunners compete for the cl.
At Arsenal and other big teams ,the bosses are expected to win trophies.Do you think the red faced would still be manager if he had failed to win anything for two years running?
Now the ball is with Wenger. The board should insist he signs the quality players for the flaws in the team.No cheap skate imports. We have enough of them especially the two French guys.
If he fails to do so,the board better get somebody else. We gunner fans are getting sick and tired of the gunners cocking up in the running in these last five yeras.Enough of talk.Action,please.

i disagree, yeh RVP is injury prone but he is very much world class, we have all seen what he is capable of when he had that amazing run of games. I think we must play a 442 though so he has support and can play off of someone.
Saurez was a good pick up by liverpool, hes causing all sorts of trouble for teams atm, torres who? if we got someone with his capabilities we would be laughing!

We should play Song as CB to partner kozza because squidge is a disaster and drags kozza down aswel. Unfortunently we have no backup for song because denilson and diaby are a joke. But hey jack played there for england and did it against west brom so he could play while we make do!

God i wish we had of spent the money 2 get cahill, he was a monster against manu yesterday. We need a defender to take charge because kozza and squidge just left ramsey to mark reid so close to goal!

He hasn’t done it because he was injured for too long. He is world class as for his talent!!!

By the way he is consistent enough, only this has been his first season for ages when he plays an acceptable number of games.

“Yes, would it be great to have a Villa type forward, I prefer him over RVP because Villa is a lot more pacey and deadly at goal.” That’s stupid. The idea to get a Villa or Suarez type of player instead of Bendtner is good, but to blame the season on RVP is ridiculous (the main article suggest that). He’s our best in the front line, so get off his back. He played enough matches, he played quite consistently, he scored enough goals. There’s nothing wrong with his talent, but it’s his former injury record that was appalling. Get rid of the dead wood not him!!! To use a more attacking team is a good idea as we have to outscore the others, because we have Shitemunia and Shitachi plus Denilshit, Fuckou Diaby or Roshitsky in the midfield. A Villa kind of player will not come here anyway: 1.)he wants more money than they’d offer him. The salary we offer is much less than many other teams, only those would come here who see a progress in it. It could have been Suarez (came from a smaller team having less salary there), but Wenger did not buy him. 2.)he wants to win trophies and we are light years away from winning the Champions League and it’s shaky to win even the PL. We are lucky in the hunt as our main opponents have been quite a crap this season. Would you come here to play with our 6-7 crap fringe players, when in Barca many fringe players surpass the quality of other top teams? If you have ambition you say no.

Before the season I told my mates that we should get Suarez. He’s a classy player, cheeky winner, quite cheap and for him it could have been a progress to come here. Wenger failed to sign him in January. He relied on unknown and unpredictable players.

vP is magnificent of he is not injurd. excellent finisher. we really need quality strikers to fight the no of goal vP puts in a season. walcott is still learning his trade as a striker. i like to c guys like cavanni, arguero or even lukaku in our team. pacy n fighter for the ball. in defence we could sign for free taiwo n mexes. n one hardcore defensive midfielder. we still need extra improvements in the team. mentally n physically. truthfully speaking, other teams are not scared of us on the pitch. thats y we need to step up mentally and shows we r not as chicken shit as others other teams accused. i have my full faith in our team but drastic improvement need to be implemented
