Don’t pick Lehmann ahead of Almunia, Arsene

Jens_Lehmann_Arsenal_Premier_League_Football__800421
by CARL ELDRIDGE Arsene Wenger won’t risk playing Jens Lehmann ahead of error-prone Manuel Almunia when the Gunners face Blackburn Rovers at the Emirates on Saturday. That’s according to former Arsenal keeper John Lukic, who says he thinks AW will stick with the Spaniard over the 41-year-old German.

Lehmann is set to make his Arsenal comeback in a reserve game at Wigan on Tuesday but it is to get his fitness back in case of injury to Almunia and not to replace him, says Lukic. Lehmann rejoined the club earlier this month after a goalkeeping injury crisis left us without the services of Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski.

Lukic, the oldest Arsenal player to appear in a Premier League game at 39 years and 336 days old when he played against Derby in November 2000, said: “The pros are simple. Jens was a very good goalie. He has a wealth of experience and won a load of trophies. He also has a big personality that might perhaps be needed in the dressing room for the run-in to the season.

“The cons are that to be a top-level goalie you have to be training every day, seeing balls travelling at high speed and keeping your hands and eyes sharp. And it’s also about being up to speed with your decision-making.If you need time to think, decide, then act or it’ll be too late. The ball will be in your net.

“Picking Jens for a Premier League game would be a massive risk. Imagine a goalie who’s been sidelined for eight months with injury. Would you pick him after one comeback game in the reserves? I think not. Jens is almost 42, he hasn’t played for eight months.

“I really don’t know how he can be expected to step straight back in – and especially at the business end of the season. Arsenal have just eight League games left, including crucial showdowns with Manchester United and Tottenham. It’s a huge ask to expect Jens to step in now.

“I’d stick with Almunia. Remind him of how well he played after coming on as a substitute at the Nou Camp and tell him he’s in a tough school but can come good again. He dropped a clanger at West Brom. He’s got to pick himself up and get on with life. It just goes to show that Mark Schwarzer would have been a great signing for Arsenal from Fulham last summer. Schwarzer would have kept things ticking over, and he would have paved the way for Szczesny to eventually make his way into the team.”

Szczesny has made his way into the team, Schwarzer would have blocked that progress and there is no guarantee that he would have been fit to fill in now during the young ‘keeper’s injury.

Wenger didn’t sign “Mad Jens” to sit on the bench for three months, if he is fit then he should play instead of the walking disaster area that is called Almunia.

Why did Wenger bring in an emergency goalie who isn’t actually fit to play? I don’t understand. Surely any reserve goalie at any other top flight club would have been a better option – someone who has actually been training all season and is ready to play if needed. And it’s desperately needed now. The situation is farcical.

Which top flight club is going to allow Arsenal to take there reserve ‘keeper off them? Anyway at this stage of the season Arsenal would only be allowed to sign an unregistered player.

This whole desperate fiasco is the result of the poor decision making of Arsene Wenger. It’s groundhog day in the goalkeeping position again because of a man that has more dollars in the bank than sense in his head. First Sol now Jens. Dont get me wrong they are both better than what we had on the bench but for fooks sake how many times are we goin to lose the league when one or two signings could have seen us three trophies in as many years? How long will fans of this once great club endure the fook ups of the all powerful tyrants? Ivan Gazidas is nothing but a bonus hungry corporate gangster and Wenger is his hitman. I leave you with one final thought from a true Captain Steve Gerrard skysports interview:

‘When the Liverpool fans turn against you you have to listen,’ said Gerrard. ‘They are Liverpool Football Club.’

    And where are The Arsenal?

This isnt about being better than Liverpool, it is about Arsenal FC Being The Best. This was his answer regarding the termination of Roy Hodgson. If you are content with being runners up all the time to United and Chelsea, you may as well be a Spurs fan. The club need to promote Wenger and bring in a new manager who will request the funds and get the most out of this squad.

Here we go again! Change the manager! spend millions on new players!

Firstly who is this magical new manager going to be? Mourinho? He wants a salary of £20 million per year and a transfer budget of £150 million and on his record he would be off after one season. So who do you suggest should be the manager.

Where are all these top class players going to come from and how much loyalty will they have to Arsenal? Do we want another Greedybayor saga?

Manchester City appointed a new manager and spent like a drunken sailor, where are they? fourth!

The only guarantee in football is that there will always be disgruntled fans calling for the manager’s head and for the directors to put their hands in their pockets.
The only guarantee in football is that there will always be disgruntled fans calling for the manager’s head and for the directors to put their hands in their pockets.
Well someone on the board or in the management of the club has to tell wenger to spend some money on a few top quality players that would address the weaknesses in our team that have existed for several seasons now.

The only sensible name for new manager that I can think of is Louis Van Gaal but if wenger addresses the issues in the team such as a lack of leadership and commitment, clearing out the average and over paid fringe players in our squad (there aren’t that many of them in my view) and buying 1 top quality centre back, 1 top quality centre midfielder and replacing the 2 or 3 players who I would like to see leave the club (and who won’t be replaced by young players already at the club) and appointing a defensive coach then i am satisfied that he can carry on as manager but seeing the same old mistakes made season after season makes me feel that a change may not be too bad an idea.

It would obviously have to be the right man and perhaps allowing wenger to see out the rest of his contract would be better than sacking him because it would everyone time to plan and adjust and make good decisions rather than making rushed ones or settling for someone second best just because they are available right now. The club as well as the team have to show leadership in this whatever they decide to do.

The only pocket the director of AFC (Ivann Gazidis) is putting his hands into belongs to the fanbase. Did anyone else realize that Mr. Gazidis moved to Manchester when he was four and played football there? Is it just a coincidence we have’nt won squat since he joined while MU continues to dominate football? Maybe he gets a yearly Fergie bonus as well.

The suggestion that Gazidis doesn’t want his employer to do well because he went to school in manchester is somewhere between laughable and plain stupid.

The coincidence is that he joined as the new stadium had just been finished and the repayments began. Also he joined as the established winning side were all leaving.
