The Debate: Club vs. Country

jacksigns

by MIKE HARVEY During every International break, it seems clubs emphasize that they have enough power to influence the decisions made at the International camps and despite being hundreds, sometimes thousands of miles away, they still have the ability to degrade the national team selections so that their respective players can get a rest.

This week, we’ve seen Chelsea’s Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and John Terry as well as Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney and Tottenham Hotspur’s Michael Dawson all pull out of the England squad, ahead of next week’s Champions League quarter-final ties. While our own Jack Wilshere remains in the squad, and looks certain to start against The Black Stars tonight at Wembley.

There’s no doubt that Wilshere is a very talented footballer and he should have a huge future ahead of him. However, I think we can all agree on that we will be watching the England “B” team tonight (the fact that Gareth Barry will be wearing the armband tonight sums it all up pretty well). It makes me wonder if this particular match is actually worth playing, when half the first team have pulled out.

Of course, representing your country is the pinnacle for any footballer. Whoever Fabio Capello decides to put out tonight, every one of them will feel tremendous pride when playing under the arch. I appreciate that it will be a weakened side, but these players have been working for this since they first kicked a football, and no one has the right to say that this isn’t a very special occasion for them.

However, there are two sides to the story.

Generally, England aren’t the most entertaining side to watch. So I think that everyone can say that it’s good to see players like Wilshere coming in, playing attractive football. However, despite being a huge breath of fresh air, I would rather see Wilshere sit out of tonight’s match.

I know it’s very selfish of me to think like that, but it would be absolutely devastating if Jack picked up an injury tonight, in a match that I feel is a pointless friendly – I expect some of you may feel that I’m being a tad cruel here, but I believe it would do everyone a favour if tonight’s match didn’t take place. I accept that the game itself is not be completely pointless. However, I will admit that the updated squad selection for tonight hasn’t exactly filled me with enthusiasm.

If Jack starts tonight, then I will hope that he has a good game, performs well but most importantly, doesn’t get injured. Our squad is already damaged enough, and we need Jack’s talent to get through these 9 remaining league games. If he does pick up an injury, then we will be forced to start with either Denilson or Diaby. I really couldn’t handle that!

Alternatively, I realize that it’s not just us who could suffer big tonight. West Ham are battling for their Premier League lives, but things appear to be improving for them. Scott Parker is in fantastic form, but if he picked up an injury, then that would produce catastrophic effects for London’s 2nd biggest side.

It’s frustrating to see the other title contenders (and Tottenham) pull their star players from the national side, and even more frustrating that we cannot do the same. It’s unfair, but on the other hand, I have no right to complain about it. It’s part of the game now, and I’ve learnt to accept it.

It’s a delicately controversial topic, so I’m going to do myself a favour and sit on the fence here.

Ultimately, I feel the final decision should be up to the players themselves. However, I believe that some of the younger players such as Jack, could fall victim of their own naivety. Despite this, I will always say that footballers should make their own decisions, learn from their own mistakes and improve from gaining experience overtime.

But as a Gooner who has been waiting nearly 7 years to watch his side claim the Premier League title, I’m going to look at the bigger picture and express my desire to see all of our players pull out of these meaningless International friendlies.

Fingers crossed Jack and of course, every other Arsenal player doesn’t pick up any injuries tonight. At this stage of the season, we simply can’t afford it.

I'm 20 and have been an Arsenal season ticket holder since 2006. My family has had Arsenal links since the 1920's, and the support is still going strong. I am at every home game, and also manage to get to multiple away games, when I can. I have been writing for various blogs and websites since I was 15, but have now settled down and have become a regular writer for Arsenalinsider. I also run my own Pro Evolution Soccer blog, Only Pro Evolutions. Arsenal is my passion. Writing is my passion. I was never good enough to play for The Arsenal, so I'll do the next best thing!

With John Terry, Wayne Rooney now AW(ith)OL, it leaves Peter Crouch and …. Carroll.

I believe Mr Wenger was wise to have a word with our young “pretender”, he could be led astray by unacceptable behaviour from some in the England squad!!!

Club vs Country? Club every time. completely agree with the feeling of wanting every arsenal player not to play for their countries this week.

That would be a good first team but it’s all about the squad these days with several of those players likely to be out injured for most of the season!

Glad to see someone with realistic transfer dealings (ie. less than 5 players out and 7 players in as most fans seem to want to happen every summer).

Personally I think that we could find a better left back than clichy and at the moment Gibbs isn’t that man.

Anyway lets concentrate on this season for the moment. There’s still a premier league trophy to go for!

    Its not that hard really….

Who is selected for playing for Country must be the decision of the National Match Committee. However, if a player is injured, he cannot play. If a player is injured during a national game, the FA picks up that players salary intil he is fit to play again.

The National Match Committee may not be so willing to risk top flight players for meaningless international games.

    Mike,

You seem to be labouring under a misapprehension in that you believe individual players can withdraw from official matches and that clubs can likewise withdraw their players. They can’t! Only through illness or injury, and then only with the consent of the FA, can players leave an international squad.

The players released by Capello, Terry Lampard, Rooney, Dawson and Cole, were allowed to go because their respective clubs are still involved in Champions League ties which are to be played next week. It is not an anti Arsenal conspiracy.

The match against Ghana may well be a “meaningless friendly” as far as most club supporters are concerned but from the FA’s viewpoint it is a money spinning opportunity to fill the white elephant which is proving to be such a drain on their finances.

The fact that the FA has managed to sell 80,000 tickets to a gullible audience, who were watching a largely England B side, says much about that organisations cynical exploitation of the England, and Ghanaian, fans.

Couldn’t give a toss about the national team, the world cup is an absolute joke as demonstrated in South Africa, and our players are just not bloody good enough, Wilshire is a young kid who is very graceful on the ball and looks to have a future in the game, is he a great player ? NO in my opinion as footballers have been getting progressively worst in the last 30 years anyway, Wishire by todays standards is right up there for young talent, but when you consider Norman Whiteside played in a world cup at 16 and dominated people and games as a young lad, and he is still only 45 now and retired young due to injury in an era where Hoddle, Rix, Robson, Souness, etc graced the field and then we look at our shoddy efforts as a national side last night, where Hart, Johnson, Barry, Jagielka, Milner, Young, Defoe, Downing all have international experience it makes you realise just how crap modern players are today..so I cannot get carried away by any 19 year old in this era as it means little and i have given my reasons above.

I don’t know your age but comparing Jack with Gazza is absolute bollo*ks, Why put that sort of unrealistic pressure on the kid, he is no Gazza, Gazza had the lot including goals goals and more goals, I doubt at the age of 19 Jack has even made the same impression as Rocastle, Merson and Kevin Campbell did at that age, and I know a bit about them as my best mate Paul Turner was in the same youth team as them all, so jus let the kid develop as last night was unfair on him, everyone is building this lad up and I saw him on his arse too many times and give the ball away too much for that level, he will develop into an England regular but calm the genius bit down a touch, Merson had far more and was not an England regualr and that speaks volumes about todays levels.

you havent got a clue ..im 32 …you are about as negative as paul merson is on sky sports about the gooners..jack wills is the man..dont need to hype him up ..all the other englands players have respect for him ..he level headed articulate, i expect your the one who misses 7 mins of the second half cueing up for £8.50 combo meal and sits down ..Im always intiating songs while people with silly names just sit down expecting things to happen

Im an ex professional and a spurs fan, although I am honest about my Football as I have said several times that I really rate Vermaelen, so I have to pick you up on 2 key points, you say I have not got a clue when it is clear I have, given my experience in Football and also you have sort of hung yourself because even the most hardened gooners would not say Wilshire is level headed given some of his recent behaviour..
Jack is a good player but he is no genius, he is a young lad who has come into football at a time when his type of player is sought after, catches the eye and is needed in the England set up, but just be very aware Joe Cole had similar attributes and expectations thrown at him and is he really comparable with Gazza ? early days !

So in effect you’re choosing club over country and I would agree with that but I don’t think there would be widespread support for this because the FA are badly run as it is and I doubt they could pick up the bill for the injured players’ salaries so it would harm the national team because the best players wouldn’t have a chance ot play together.

Its hard enough being a national team coach as it is and this would make it much harder.

  • SuperRob7

Also it is useful for cappello (or whoever the respective national team coaches are) to get a group of players together and playing together in the style of that manager. As much as club fans hate international friendlies, the standard of national teams would probably drop if there were none because the players get to know each other’s games and the coach and the coach gets to know the players and their games.

Young Jack is going to be a superstar no question. His performances against Barcelona proved it, he never let the occassion get to him. Like fabregas, the goals will come for him also

I just hate seeing a young kid put under so much pressure and this mornings headlines prove to me he is not being cared for by his parents in the right manner, in the old days they gave you an experienced pro to watch over you, it might be a wise move for this kid.
