Lehmann earns praise from Reserve team boss

Jens Lehmann has impressed Arsenal Reserve team manager Neil Banfield with his performance and attitude in yesterday’s 2-1 defeat to Wigan.

The former German international goalkeeper played his first game since returning to Arsenal after coming out of retirement for the final few games of the season.

Despite conceding twice and ending up on the losing side, Banfield was full of praise for the 41-year-old, and believes his presence will be of great benefit to the young players at the club.

He said: “Jens has been fantastic and he is a fantastic professional. He’s been talking to the lads and has come out today to get himself ready for what the manager wants to use him for. He is first-class.

“The way he is so professional and the way he approaches every single game. He is a credit to our profession. The lads are lucky to have him in there.”

It seems unlikely that Lehmann will be ready to start in the Premier League just yet, and we will be eagerly awaiting the post-international injury news for an idea of who else is likely to miss the Blackburn game this weekend.

I'm 23-years-old and currently living in Bristol, studying to be a journalist. I've been hooked on Arsenal since I was about 10, and as much as I sometimes wish I could stop, I can't give them up. Favourite player of all time would have to be Patrick Vieira for the sheer passion with which he played the game.

The media seem to be reporting that he was rubbish and made a string of errors. I wonder if they just love to hate him though and want to be proven right about our goalkeeping situation, and will criticise any keeper we have who didn’t cost £20million or more.

I was hoping that “Mad Jens” would turn out to be an adequate stand-in until Szczesny is fit again. Unfortunately, if the reports of yesterday’s Wigan game are true, that will not be the case.

A string of errors and some slow reactions could possibly be put down to “ring rustiness”, but is he any better than Almunia?

His professionalism and attitude may be excellent and his influence in the dressing room may be beneficial but his propensity to commit howlers seems as prevalent as ever.

Almunia or Lehmann? Frying pan and fire spring to mind!

    Again very indifferent research!

The Reserves were playing with 10 men most of the match???
