FTK Blog: What are the causes for Arsenal’s failure?

{jcomments on}Wenger_1663750What was frustrating about the defeat against Bolton, was the unerring predictability of the defeat. Even Arsene had to admit that if we finish third then it will be an unsatisfactory season.  He conceded that this was one of the easiest run ins that his team has had to face for many seasons. Yet because of a lack of maturity and experience we took only 2 points out of a possible 9 to see our hopes of winning the Premiership destroyed. There was no real pressure in evidence. These players are paid an obscene amount of money to deliver, and barely a handful do, and this is why Arsenal fail and will continue to do so until things change. The attitude of our Manager in his almost papal infallibility is evidenced by his response to a question about whether he would consider moving away from his beliefs and principles to change the situation for Arsenal?  He replied thus…

“If you can convince me that the principles are wrong then I am ready”

But the truth is there is no one around him that is willing to challenge him or convince him. He went on further to say

“ Something is wrong in our team, It’s not the principles that are wrong… There is something wrong defensively…”

HELLO???

Arsene, I am heartily sick of repeating this mantra.

“Success begins at the back!”

I can no longer defend Arsene Wenger. But be clear, I am not calling for him to go, but to be frank, I am so frustrated and angry that next season will be my last at the Emirates, if nothing changes, then I will join the legion of divided and disillusioned  Arsenal fans and support this club from afar. For enough is enough. I have patience but I am losing respect for a culture that refuses to allow an alternative credo to surface. My reasoning is simple, if the Manager ergo “The Club ” is not willing to invest in experienced match winning players, then why should I invest in two gold memberships at almost four thousand pounds? He is trying yet again to protect the average squad players who have failed to deliver time after time after time. He has asked us to blame him not the players. He cannot fault the player’s attitudes, and he is at pains to point out that he, Arsene Wenger was responsible for choosing the players.

Yes in that respect Arsene is right. His fingerprints are all over the scene of the crime. The Wenger philosophy is basically

“There is no I in team”

This is an often well worn quote that originated from one of the world’s best coaches of college basketball, John R Wooden was coach of UCLA who between 1963 and 1975 won 10 of the 12 available NCAA Championships. His short quotes inspired players and his principles laid the foundation of good team play. Yet this quote can be seen as the root cause of many of Arsene’s convictions. The team ethic has been taken too far. It is this ethos that now paralyses our players, it creates uncertainty in their minds. The very absence of leaders on the pitch, the failure to be selfish in front of goal and take an obvious chance, and finally the failure to instil a “Die for the cause” mentality in his players is because of the collective team ethos. Arsene knows that confidence in young players is fragile, and to blame players could result in those players failing to achieve their potential.

The problem at Arsenal, is that we no longer have world class role models for the youth to learn from. They have to learn from each other. From what ex-players have said about Arsene’s technique of communication, basically means that these players will not receive a Ferguson style hairdryer ticking off when they underperform, instead they will be comforted and reassured.  It seems that only the bottles of water in the dug out get to receive Arsene’s real wrath. Goal Keepers apart, Arsene very rarely drops players who repeatedly make mistakes or who fail to deliver. It is this ethos of team responsibility for success or failure that is almost political in it’s application. Arsene’s reliance upon his conviction is what is paralysing our club at the moment. Unless there are changes of personnel around him then this conviction will prove difficult to change.

Where is the the evidence for my assertion?

In 2008, Theo Walcott scored a hatrick for England against Croatia, he became an overnight sensation. There was a clamour for the young man to become the next Thierry Henry, but Arsene’s response was

“For me, it’s important he continues to develop as a team player,”

Next the question of the lack of passionate leaders on the field…

Denilson was quoted as stating that Fabregas was not a natural leader, Arsene Wenger responded

“We have a shared leadership in our team but I believe Fabregas is an outstanding leader, especially when you consider he’s 23 years old, with personality and character, and Van Persie as well.

“I believe what is important in the way we want to play football is that everyone takes responsibility.”

This team ethos is laudable but has it gone too far? There is the sharing of wealth too, just look at our wage bill for a start. But how many £30 million  players do we possess. To warrant the third highest wage bill in the premier league? Again Arsene’s obsession with making sure that there is no “I” in team. We all get paid handsomely, so where is the desire or aspiration to get a high wage by good performances, if you can receive a king’s ransom for just sitting on the bench? I argue that too many ordinary players are overpaid, and this will present a barrier to bringing in established players. Something that Stan Kroenke and Ivan Gazidis should have the balls to address. We have 18 players out on loan, but I bet that we are paying the majority of their wages as the sums will be probably too high for Championship Clubs to afford.

At the start of the season Arsene Wenger failed to buy a new Keeper, leading to uncertainty in his back four. Squillaci was never ever going to be a top draw centre back, and the loss of Vermaelen exposed Wenger’s gamble. We have continued to let in set pieces and this has been the case for at least three seasons, but do we see a change in our defensive tactics and application of these fundamental BASIC training ground skills by the players? When in front of goal with a chance to score, players will instinctively look to pass to the player next to them, again searching for team goals. Even Arsene Wenger’s attacking philosophy is under strain. The absence of a 30 goals a season striker to replace Thierry Henry, and the chance in formation to 4-3-3 means that we employ a team approach to scoring goals. Robin van Persie apart, there appears to be no other potent striker anywhere in our club.

We need a number two keeper, an experienced centre back, a Song replacement, and a proven goal scorer. But already before the season has ended Arsene has ruled out any major changes to his personnel. I would love to see Arsenal buy the likes of Cahill and Scott Parker, who would instil the fighting qualities that we so badly need. We are not very far from reaching the top, but what again is very frustrating, is the refusal to make those buys. I don’t want to hear about the transfer targets that we failed in getting, it obvious for all to see that this squad needs a clear out and fresh new hungry blood brought in, but if we don’t point fingers and allocate blame, then that is tantamount to saying that really nothing much will change. If we fail to make those changes then let us be clear, Arsene Wenger will never win the Premiership again let alone the Champions League for our rivals will continue to strengthen their squads.

So where am I on the page? As I said at the beginning, I can no longer defend Arsene Wenger, but neither will I join the ranks of those calling for his head. Arsene Wenger has earned the right to decide his own fate after what he has done for our club. But clearly someone close to Arsene needs to challenge his current approach. We need new defensive coaching staff, we need new experienced players to strengthen our squad, and if Arsene Wenger does decide to go in two seasons time we need ?Pep Guardiola! But let us hope that I am wrong, yet I fear that his refusal to change will lead to a tarnishing of his legacy, which would be a great pity after all that he has done for Arsenal Football Club.

I think it is time that the fans took active action.

Not just about the on pitch capitulation over the past 6 years but off the pitch with the club ready to send out renewals with a 6.5% increase!

I hear a protest is planned for the villa game and I for one will be there.
    Enough is enough.

The club have overseen the collapse of team on the verge of europe wide domination after the unbeaten season to being also rans who will fight just to stay in the top 4.

Indeed an excellent blog entry. If FTK were the manager, I believe things would look a lot more positive for our beloved club!

Now, as things are, I fear that, once again, these great and obvious pieces of advice will be ignored on the French altar of arrogance and the insistence that our players are good enough, even though the truth is they are not. I fear that you’ll be able to post the exact same blog entry come April 2012! I fear that nothing will change this summer apart from another new shirt, and another summer of endless “this year we’ll win titles” clichés and maybe a new central defender that no other clubs are interested in.

I hope against hope that Arsenal will do the obvious and buy the needed players and make the necessary changes, but I fear we as a club and as fans will continue to be the laughing stock of European top football. We have had that position for a few years running now, and I fear we will in the foreseeable future.

But I certainly hope I’m not right!

    FTK,

Thank you for a touch of sanity.

Refreshing to read an objective critique instead of the gormless “sack Wenger now” comments posted by the headless chickens who appear to believe it is their God given right to support a trophy winning team.

Wenger could have spent £50 million, during the last two transfer windows, with no guarantee that the new players would not have succumbed to injury just as Vermaelen, Almunia, Ramsey, Fabiansky and all the rest have.

Yes we need some reinforcements and I don’t mean we should buy some more “prospects”, we need experienced quality players.

To make room, for the newcomers, there must be something of a clear out. we all know the names of the leading candidates so I won’t bother listing them again.

Wenger will always protect his players and I wouldn’t expect anything else, do Ferguson or Mourinho slag their players off in public? Of course not!

Wenger knows better than anyone the squad’s shortcomings, we are led to believe there is money available, let’s see if he invests it.

After yesterday’s result and for the sake of my sanity, I will not be watching any more Arsenal games this season (especially next sunday’s compulasory defeat against the mancs). This team is full of chokers and jokers. For the last 4-5 seasons our opponents have developed devestating tactics using their squad well to counter our tippy tappy football approach. Park Ji Sun (man utd), lee (bolton), the nasty da silva twins (man utd again) and virtually any debutant or under performing player who wants a boost (danny rose, leadbeter, cohen) they all thrive when playing against us. And we expect them to learn rach time they get a spanking only to repeat the same mistake again. could you seriously see us beating man utd with seven defenders in our squad. Not in a million years but they did it on the first asking in the FA cup. AKBs always went about saying whenever we face man utd we don’t have our first XI well they didn’t have theirs but they still beat us…twice. What we need is a new manager, fitness staff and specialist coaching staff. Why are we afraid of change or until we are mid table will we sack the underachievers, whoever they are. Mind you we don’t have a daglish figure to pull us back up once we fall out of the champions league spots and then even if we want to spend 200million no players would want to join our sorry asses. Or maybe its just me, in a very bad dream which I will wake up from right now…………

Excellent analysis. What the “keep AW” group overlooks is that AW has become such a laughing stock and our beloved team’s reputation for embarassing chokes and AWs recent crazybsideline behaviour that good players won’t want to come to Arsenal to be part of a “losing” team. There is a price to be paid for this underachievment every season, it isnt 2005 or 6, when we could make excuses about the stadium or injuries, its 2011 and we are almost a laughing stock. In this time frame the likes of Birmingham, Portsmouth, Everton have all won trophies. And therefore players like Cesc, Nasri and RVP have to look to their own brief careers and conclude they are better off off elsewhere — they dont want to be tainted with this lunderachieving as it reduces their monetary value. So they will leave and we cant blame them. Why should they think another season undr AW will be any different?

The problem I can foresee is that Mr Kroenke will not be prepared to soldier on with the type of results we keep getting season after season…..near the top but never at the top. Americans are not good losers. Pressure on Arsene Wenger by interference will produce the only result possible and it is questionable whether this is really the answer for future success.

Wevare here again towards the end of another season and we are wondering where it all went wrong- It just the reasons that we have had another tropheyless season

No real investment in the squad no improvemant in the personnel we have
Some os our squad are in a comfort zone on way too much money and doing nothing to justify it wj=hen called on.
The team have the same weaknesses that we have had over the last few year.

1 No outsanding keeper – we have a promising one
2 We still lack the commanding Centre back to compete for the initial ball in – other teams see this and target us
3Fabregas looks like he playing out his time before he leaves
4RVP is the only genuine top class forward that we have
5 The players that are not up to standard are not got rid of just rewarded
Bendtner Denilson Eboue,Diaby and Squillachi is not good enough
The squad is in a rut and AW needs to frighten a few by dumping some of the rubbish we do have in our squad – might just put pressure on the rest
Alex Ferguson would not put up with them

Don’t be so afraid of change. There are capable managers out there who could make this squad (even with no new signings) perform better because I think we have quality players who have great technique and they are all talented players, but what they lack is motivation, strong mentality and defensive organisation, all of which come from the manager and the coaching staff. Also its time that we had a manager who can adapt the team and its tactics depending on who we are playing against rather than trying to play the same way against blackpool, Barcelona or chelsea.

I do feel that sacking wenger would be harsh but that’s because he has helped to make arsenal into what it is today and I believe he has helped to raise the standard of the premier league to new heights. Recently though his behaviour has been embarassing and it seems as though he has lost his famous calm. I’ve always defended him but I’m just getting fed up of him and I think a change would do us good. Give him a place on the board if he wants it, but you would have to make sure his prescence doesn’t overshadow whoever is in charge of the team.

btw we’ve been lead to believe there has been money available to spend for several years now and Wenger continues with the same lines about “believing in his players”, “we’ve already got 6 centre backs if you count song and diaby” and “we’re still a young team”. And before the stadium was built they said it wouldn’t affect spending on the football side of the business. Obviously that wasn’t true and some honesty would be nice.

I hope you are right that Kroenke will not stand for these results season after season but I am concerned that his sports franchises in america seem to be in similar situations. My blog is not a rallying call for the anti-Wenger faction.

Their cries of “Itold you so” are as predictable as the observation that night follows day.

My concern is that nothing at the club appears to be working in respect of basic footballing skills in defense. There are players who gesture how did that happen, who was responsible for picking up that player?

All Djourou had to do was get to the ball first or at least keep ahead of the attacker Elmander. The basics from a player that at one point was worst than his team mate Big Phillipe Senderos? We should not have expected anything more.

Do things the Arsenal way, Ranting and protesting will only serve the aims of those who would wish us to fail. We can feed the message into the club in other ways.

For what he has done for our club, the man deserves our respect, and it is down to him to decide his fate. As long as he ackowledges the need for change, and put this in place, I shall remain loyal.

I have said that if another season passes without change, then I cannot justify spending almost £4,000 in pursuit of unhappiness and frustration. I can only agree slightly with your closing observations..

This season even die hard fans are finding hard to stomach Wenger’s bullshit….all very predictable and very sad end to our season.

I really do believe that Wenger is suffering from a final realisation that the players he has depended upon, will never perform to their best under pressure. There is still time to put things right, but there must be change…

@charliegeorge – Fair enough (mostly). I have done a u turn and there is nothing wrong with that. I’m a pragmatic person and although I think you were too early to be calling for Arsene’s head if you have been for the past 4 years, I would probably agree with you that its time for him to go at this moment in time. By the way that isn’t an apology because I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong in having a different opinion to you.
I am not anyones sidekick and just because 2 people agree it doesn’t mean one is simply copying the other persons opinion.
And if parallel universe theory is correct then there are an infinite number of me and you existing in an infinite number of universes, but lets not go into that.

    @Charlie George (aka Maximus)

I cannot accept that Arsene Wenger has been motivated by deception, what possible gain was there for him to come into a club and destroy it piecemeal in the way that you allege?

I have given the man respect, and ask that you do so too.

Who was it who went 38 games unbeaten?

Who was it who delivered two doubles to the club?

Who was it who changed the face of football in this country, so that everyone wants to play “The Arsenal Way”?

Who was it who enabled us to beat Real Madrid, Inter Milan and get us to the Champions League final in 2006?

Who was it who managed to keep us in the top four for over 10 years against the financial might of the Glazers and Roman Abromovich and now the Man City backers from Dubai?

Who was it who sold Anelka for 24 million?

Who was it who managed to deliver top flight football and run the club single handed as the Board went into meltdown and managed to balance the books with a brand new stadium?

Hardly a deluded person who lies and cheasts his way around the club.

I think that it is YOU who has to apologise to Arsene Wenger.

    FTK

That’s why I put the question to you: why did Arsenal win those titles in 98, 02 and 04?

I think the answer is as plain as the nose on our face.

We had warriors then, we have bottlers now.

We had a world class GK then (David Seaman, not his signing), we have shit-for-brains (the Spanish Waiter and Flapianski now (not so much Chez, but he should not be our first choice).

We had the best back five to die for (Adams, Keown, Dixon, Winterburn, Bould, and none were as a result of the imposter), we have plodders and pretenders now (Eboue = headless chicken, Djourou = no presence, no positional sense, Sagna = can’t cross for toffee, calamity Clichy = lost cause, Squillaci = lost cause, Kos = an accident waiting to happen)n

We had a strike-force that should (and for the most part did) have ruled the world (Bergkamp, not his signing, Henry, Ljundberg, Wright, not his signing, Pires, Overmars), now we have crocks (VP, and a turning circle of a Mack truck), gay deceivers (Walcott, Chamakh) and gum-chewing fantasisers (Bendtner).

We had solid DM, Vieira and Petit, now we are stuck with Song (laughable when he first started and not much better since).

    continued

I could go on and on, but I won’t bore you.

My thesis/analysis, FTK, is those unparalleled players did a magnificent job in hiding the imposter’s deficiencies – lack of tactics, unweildy subs, no defensive training, no need to motivate self-motivated animals.

Unhappily, as good as these players were, they failed to win in Europe. Never outclassed, never browbeaten, but always at the mercy of no Plan B, no dissection of the opposition’s strengths, no tactical input, no credible assistant by his side.

Now we are left with the same old vices, but this time WITHOUT THE CATTLE on the park.

The youth policy was his choice, his brainchild, his baby. He must therefore be accountable for his actions.

Most supporters now are turning on the imposter, and I find myself no longer in the minority. Most are echoing the sentiments of Peter Finch, in Network:

“I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!”

As for the misleading and deception, much of that began post 2004. This cannot be denied (he himself said as much). When you are not winning and failing, that becomes the norm. You make excuses, you become desperate, you reach breaking point.

This, as I predicted, is where we stand today.

One thing that I will concede, is that despite my loyalty, it is your point of view that has prevailed for many supporters, but be honest

    Are we mid table?

Have we benefited from being in the top four? Admittedly one year was due to some dodgy lassangna , but otherwise we have earned that right.

Arsene Wenger will either change or go, he is that sort of man.

He has been economical with the truth as often as other managers have.

He will not reveal the weaknesses in his squad , neither will he give support to his attackers.

But I cannot accept that his only raison d’etre since 2004 was to deceive fans and players.

Yes he inherited some legends, but he had also created some.

    Nicholas Anelka
    Patrick Vieira
    Thierry Henry

But for the sake of six games

    Tottenham 2-3, 3-3
    Newcastle 0-1, 4-4
    Blackburn 0-0
    Liverpool 1-1

We should have had 13 more points and be number one in the Premiership today.

We didn’t manage to do so, and next season, will be harder. This was perhaps the easiest season to succeed and we blew it…

    We were THAT close!

I don’t think a new manager would have to start again and need to spend huge amounts of money. Obviously some would (like mourinho) but if the board chooses the manager carefully, the squad we have has alot of talent and good players even in defensive areas. The thing we lack the most has been motivation, tactics and organisation. With Martin keown as defensive coach, a defence featuring senderos, flamini at left back and Eboue managed a champions league record for clean sheets, and the players we have now are better than them.

I accept what you say, however, is it not that difficult to unearth gems if you’ve been in a job 15 years?

The odds are very much stacked in your favour.

Are we mid-table? No. But then it’s predominantly been a league wherein 4 clubs, MU, ARS, CHL, LIV have shat upon the clubs immediately below them. An oligopoly, of sorts. Don’t get me wrong, we have good players in the past 7 years, but the imposter has mercilessly flogged them off at the expense of either A: dross, B: banked the proceeds. Is this the way to run a football club? And let us not forget, in days gone by, when the European Cup actually meant something, finishing fourth (correct me if I’m wrong) was worth diddly squat. Now the imposter considers it a trophy.

In no other sporting profession on the planet could a manager/coach expect to have a job (and one which in this case pays more than the highest earner who actually kicks a ball) without the silverware upon which his tenure is based.

Only at Arsenal, my dear friend, and hence the rancour in the ranks.

And now he has the chutzpah to say “blame me for our failure.” Well what do you think we’ve been f***ing doing you imposter?
