Arsenal have added to the list of pre-season friendlies and will face Benfica and Cologne before the start of the new campaign, we have been told.
Arsene Wenger will take his squad to Germany to play the German outfit on July 23 and will then play in Lisbon on August 6, with the Emirates Cup being played in the middle of those two dates. As for yesterday not a lot mroe need be said as to the lacklustre performance and general apathy the players showed in the 2-1 defeat to Villa.
Weirdly, I stayed behind and applauded the players and the manager as the few fans who remained at the final whistle filed away from the ground muttering colourful invective of a disgruntled tone. But I thought, do you know what, I’ve supported the club since boyhood and seen far worse times than this.
It would have been too easy to leave early and join the throng walking back to the tube ranting and raving about the woeful shortcomings of the club. It would be harder, I thought, to clap the players but isn’t that what we do? Support? Anyway, judge me a fool but I stayed and clapped and it did me good. I’m Arsenal. For better or for worse, they are Arsenal. Whether we like it or not. Could be worse. Could be West Ham. See you at Fulham.
