All Done For Another Season – Fulham v Arsenal Match Report

Arsenal failed to overhaul Manchester City into third place after a disappointing 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage. It was a largely disjointed and lackluster performance from the gunners, meaning Arsenal will have to qualify through a playoff to reach the Champions League group stage and capped off a very disappointing season for the gunners.

Steve Sidwell opened the scoring, which was canceled out by Van Persie’s ninth consecutive away goal. The Dutchman’s goal also meant he matched Henry and Ronaldo’s record of 18 goals after the 1st of January in one season. Zamora headed Fulham back in front but substitute Walcott denied a final day win for Fulham.

The gunners made four changes to the side which lost to Aston Villa last week, most noticeably Chamakh starting with Van Persie for only the second time this season. Arsenal started the better team, keeping the ball and passing it around nicely. It was the gunners who created the first chance, Nasri with a free header, but it lacked any power, and was consequently plucked out of the air by Mark Schwarzer in the ninth minute. Andy Johnson found himself one on one with the goalkeeper five minutes later, but was given offside to the disgust of the home fans. A Sagna cross then found its way to the far post, where Gibbs was waiting, who powerfully aimed it at Schwarzer’s left hand side, but a brilliant low save denied the English youngster a first premier league goal of the season. A Zamora flick on released Johnson who took on a snapshot, which was easily saved low down by Szczesny. Arsenal went 1-0 down in the 25th minute. Zamora made a run down the right, made his way into the box and his cut back found Steve Sidwell, who slid the ball through Szczesny’s legs. This goal came against the run off play, after Arsenal had the better chances and dominated possession in the first 25 minutes. However, just 4 minutes later, Arsenal were level. Abou Diaby made a strong run past the Fulham midfield before exchanging passes with Chamakh. Diaby then drilled a pass to Van Persie, who took one touch, then expertly slotted it into the bottom corner. This was nothing more than Arsenal deserved, who then looked to press on to find a lead. However, Fulham created the closest chance of the match without scoring. Murphy broke into the box, Szczesny came out but missed the ball, leaving Murphy with an open goal at his mercy but a stunning Vermalean tackle on the line denied Fulham a goal to put them in front. The ball rolled across the line and out for corner.

This was brilliant defending and was glimpses of the old Vermlean which is what Arsenal have sorely missed. There were no further chances in the first half. The second half started the same as the first half had ended. Fulham created the better chances, however none of these chances materialised. A Nasri free kick 25 yards out was palmed away by Schwarzer after it was heading for the top corner. Moments after this, Fulham retook the lead. A Greening cross from the left found Bobby Zamora, who’s bullet header left Szczesny with no chance. Arsenal were playing very poorly and nearly conceded again, when a loose ball in the box found Zamora, who’s cut back was smothered by Szczesny. However, this is when Arsenal started playing better. A cross from Van Persie was dropped by Schwarzer at the feet of Chamakh, but he couldn’t poke the ball goalwards, and it went wide. Wenger’s frustration was shown as he made 3 changes at once, something he rarely does.

Arshavin, Walcott and Eboue all came on. 6 minutes later Fulham were down to 10 men. Vermalean was taken out by Gera after a clearance and was shown a straight red card for his late, studs up challenge. However, Arsenal couldn’t capitilise on their man advantage until the last minute. Walcott’s bursting run  created space for him to shoot, his shot came of the post and in from the right hand side of the area about 10 yards out. By Akshay Patel

A truly shocking season is over. From 2nd place to 4th in a month.Well done Wenger. If we dont spend money and have a massive clearout we will not even finish top 4 next season. We have too many average players and next year no Cesc and Nasri

So we finish the season having drawn and lost as many in total as we won. Let’s hear Wenger’s spin on this one. Finishing 4th in a two horse race – that’s some achievement.

I don’t blame Fabregas. He’s just sick of it, as so many fans are.

joke of a finish to a seson… dont really have anyting to say. this is the most crucial summer of wengers career and if he doesnt deliver, he will be gone. magnificent as he has been, this could be his last and i would hate for him to be remembered for the last few seasons.
yeah and dan remeber to tune in on channel 5 and itv4, the big ones obviously. the coverage may be shit but at least you get to play teams with the glamour and history of lech poznan for example, so fuck off son

    Our players lack discipline.

If we’re better organised with leaders on the pitch then we win the league and a domestic cup.

How do you go from challenging for the title to having to qualify for the Champions League?

    Not acceptable.

On paper, man for man, we have the best technical footballers in England. However, the same can’t be said for their hearts.

I hate ‘knocking’ our manager but I’d give him one more summer to listen to ex players and fans. Everyone knows who doesn’t pull their weight on the field, and also who we need to bring in.

And please, no more five-foot-nothings in midfield. We have enough already!

Thank Good the season is over, cant remember the last time I’ve felt so despondent about the Arsenal, and our prospects for the future. From being in 4 competitions to none, and somewhat fortunate to finish in the fourth place. Over the last months our form has been of relegation quality.

Totally agree, i feel bad about him because he seems like a nice blike and he shows signs of being very good but then he fails to mark someone from Bolton and they score. Hes just not good enough why is it with all our youth team and “wealth” he is the best we can do?

Well, Well, Well. An all but predicatble end to the season. I think I had convinved myself that these bunch of weak mentals would at least show a bit of heart having received the most hostile reception and reaction I’ve ever witnessed at the Emirates last week. How I had deceived myself that this team with the world’s most fragile confidence and questionable attitude would at least show some steel in the last game of the season and do all they can to get an automatic Champions League place. My fellow Arsenal fans I tell you – our problems stretch far beyond than the talent, ability and potential of this current squad. Our mental strentgh, or better yet, lack thereof has cetainly reached the point for crisis talks as I am as bemused as you are in seeing how a team can go from comfortably holding 2nd spot for three quarters of the season to slipping horribly to 4th place with only a handful games remaning all because they deservedly lost a Carling Cup final to a team that has now been relegated. Please Mr. Wenger you tell me why there is a need to instill confidence and resilience into a bunch of well paid professional football players averaging at 25 and playing for a top team. Both you and your players should be ashamed of yourselves not only for the most embarrasing 4th quarter collapse and shambolic campaign but for your continued persistance to fail by repeating the same mistakes and clearly not being bothered to counteract them. Season 2011/2012 shall surely be your last chance – change or get changed.

wow. If he was just an injured player then fine but the club captain not bothering to go to a game is not the sort of behaviour we need from a captain and kind of shows that Cesc isn’t captain material. Give it to RvP or Vermaelen next season.

However Cesc is still one of the best midfielders in the world so I hope he stays and I hope he can get back to his best.

So true. 6 managers in 8 years ia a bit nutty but it doesnt seem to have done them much harm. Yes they have more money blah blah but it kind of kills the argument that its too “disrupting” to change managers. B****. Look at Dalglish, sometimes you juat need a change.

I suggest we go for a north london summer hug and discuss quite how it has all come to this, you have a captain that would sooner be at the grand prix than at the last game, that is nothing short of disgraceful, and we have a manager who slags us yids off for being on his case, we lost to west ham, blackpool and wigan, and we were not idiots when 19,000 fans went to milan following his team were we…sick of the modern day arse holes in our game I really am..fuck them all is what I say..how dare Harry the west ham mug slag our fans off like that ..the prick !

we are all being taken for a ride and it is time both clubs stood up and got this sorted starting with the terraces ! greedy greedy bastards have no idea what it means to us all ..rant over

    Well said.

AW has said nothing tangible indicating change. In the press conference post game he kinda said it was his fault, but not what he would do. Normally in these situations you would expect someone to say they were going to take a long hard look at the season, the team, the match prep etc etc and see what changes need to be made. But he doesnt. He just gets mostly defensive and says petulent things like “we are the only team to beat man u and barca” its childish and uninspiring.

Last week when asked if he would change his philosophy he shot back “no” before the question was finished. Thats very telling.

If you cant learn from mistakes then you are going to repeat them.

what you say is true but even being better (improving on disastrous can’t be that hard) organised defensively would make a massive difference. Its such a simple change but apparently “there is no one in the world who can teach wenger about how to manage a team”. Seriously I was shocked at that quote and its that kind of complacency that trickles down to the team.

Clearly other football managers can teach wenger something because they do well enough against us that we haven’t won anything for how long??

exactly, he knows hes probably going to stay again because barca are too tight to splash the cash for him, so its only going to get worse! he went from a fighter last season, to a frustrated, injury prone wany-away! Sell him to the highest bidder, stuff him and barca

What’s wrong with 4th CL place? It means more revenue earned from 2 extra qualifying matches. The (bank) manager and the board would be very happy.

Can I ask what you gooners think about wengers use of the armband ? I read an article yesterday and it appears it is a transfer bargaining tool with him,

Mercer, Hapgood, Mclintock, Rice, Sansom, Adams have all made it quite clear where their heart lies, why does wenger give it to the man he is most scared of losing in some feeble attempt to keep them ? it should be the ultimate honour !..first it was Vieira, then Henry, then Fabregas and it will be RVP..what is the man playing at ? captains are a symbol of the club and what it stands for, not to be given to a man who wants out as a piece making exercise..is that part of the problem I wonder ? for the last 10 years the voice in the changing room hasn’t wanted to be there !..hard to argue with people..

    Bigsy,

Fabregas has been a joke as Captain from first to last, I said at the outset that he was too young, too inexperienced and just not a leader.

The idea that someone who has expressed a desire to leave the club should be made or retained as Captain is ludicrous. His action in missing the last game of the season, to watch the Grand Prix, says it all and is the last straw for me.

If Barca, Real, or AFC Wimbledon want him and can pay the money sell him and sell him quick.
