“Trust us”. Those are the words coming from Arsene Wenger’s mouth, in the wake of Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Fulham.
I’m sure you have heard about the spend some money chant that was passionately sung by the travelling Arsenal support on Sunday, at Craven Cottage.
Arsene admits he “shares their disappointment and it is completely understandable because a few weeks ago, we were in a position to win the league and in the end, we play for qualifying in the Champions League. That is a massive disappointment”.
Clearly, we all share Arsene’s pain. There’s no doubt about that.
But after everything we’ve seen this year, we simply cannot let this happen again. This time next season, we can’t feel like this again.
Optimistically, I am expecting a very active transfer window for us. Like I’ve always said, I’m sure Arsene will do all he can, so that we aren’t left disappointed like this, again in 12 months time.
In an interview with Arsenal TV Online, Arsene revealed that the club “will be active and busy (in the summer) certainly and will try to make the right decisions. We have to take it on the chin and come back stronger next season”.
Arsenal remain likely to capture Southampton winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, as well as Charlton’s left-back Carl Jenkinson.
Alternatively, it appears that Wenger will try to invest in some more older and experienced players, in a bid to end the six year trophy drought.
Arsene has also admitted that “we had the technical quality to win the league, but certainly not the defensive solidity to do it”.
I think we can all expect at least one new defender to come in this summer – and I’m not talking about the signing of Thomas Vermaelen, after his long awaited return to first team football, after the mysteriously long Achilles injury of his.
The word on the street is suggesting the Gael Clichy will leave The Emirates this summer, after nearly 8 years at the club, when he made his debut (along with Cesc Fabregas) against Rotherham United in October 2003.
It seems forever now that we’ve been linked with Gary Cahill, Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka and Christopher Samba. Is this the transfer window where we’ll finally be able to initiate at least one of these seemingly-inevitable signings?
Of course, only time will tell.
Despite our devastatingly disappointing end of the season, I’m confident about next year’s campaign – as well as the summer transfer window ahead.
I trust in Arsene Wenger.
