Wenger weighs up bid to bring Blaise Matuidi to Arsenal for £13m

Blaise-Matuidi

Blaise Matuidi has told Arsene Wenger he wants to sign for Arsenal from French outfit St Etienne (got to be the coolest name for a football club ever…er, apart from Arsenal of course). But Wenger is hesistant on stumping up the £13million needed to gabe the player.

It is reported that Wenger has has kept tabs on Matuidi with a view to boosting the squad with the addition of a defensive midfielder and his latest comments indicate that he is waiting for the Gunners to finally make a bid.

He said: “I am flattered by the interest from clubs abroad, and I have always loved the Premier League. It is the best league in the world, so exciting, and I really want to be part of that one day, however St Etienne has its say about that.”

If Wenegr drags his heels, Newcastle are said to waiting in the wings.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are said have held talks with Jose Enrique’s representatives after identifying the Newcastle left-back as a possible replacement for Gael Clichy. Roma is said to be the destination for departing Clichy.

Isn’t he only a bit older than Song? Surely we won’t keep two first-XI DMs happy, unless one performs the box-to-box Jack Wilshere role. And what about the opportunities for Frimpong and Coquelin? Would be a solid addition, but I think we need to spend the money elsewhere on the pitch.

Totally disagree. It’s an important/vital position and we have only 1 player to cover it really. If he’s a Song calibre, he will be a good addition. Frimpong and Coquelin should be substitutes. Questions to ask: 1.)Is he good enough? 2.)Is he experienced enough? 3.)Is he versatile? Might play in a different role, as well.

Is there anybody, who saw him play? I heard about Blaise, still I don’t know him.

Gunnerule – Football is a squad game, if we are going to worry about keeping players happy if they are not in the first X1 we may as well give up now. Just a reminder Song only started 39 of our 58 matches last season and this January will be off to ACN where he could miss 8 matches. Bear in mind too that if we sign Samba & Gervinho, we could have 6 players at the ACN. Song, Samba, Gervinho, Eboue, Chamakh and Frimpong if he gets into the Ghana squad.

Last season “first X1″ STARTS (Max 58)
    Sczcesney 24
    Sagna 42
    Djourou 35
    Koscielny 43
    Clichy 40
    Wilshire 44
    Song 39
    Fabregas 29
    Walcott 25
    RVP 26
    Nasri 39

Plenty of room to sign more “first teamers” Our 2nd choice keeper managed 20 starts, our 3rd choice centre half 30 starts. 2nd choice centre forward 27 starts, 2nd choice left winger 36 starts and our 2nd choice full backs 19 and 17 starts. As i said this is a squad game, the problem we had is that many of our 1st choice players didnt play enough matches and our 2nd and 3rd choices players were also injured or not good enough. Oh to have players like the double team of 71 who could play 60+ games a season, go out on the drink all week and still manage a crafty fag at half time.

A DM would be an important signing. However not convinced by this at all. There are so many better DMs than him in france let alone in europe. Yann M’vila, Steven N’zonzi, Felipe Melo. Not Jose Enrique, the guys severely overrated, it should be a hint when liverpool are sniffing around. Hes got no pace and he is about as subtle as rape.

he isn’t the perfect replacement but he is good, and still young. The perfect replacement would be baines, someone who can actually cross the ball in dangerously and add some vemon to our free-kick situation again. Not sure what happen to RVPs free-kick game, because he used to be lethal, but can’t complain hes doing everything else right.

This is probably just recycled junk, we have been linked with blaise for about 3 years now. Personally i’d be giving frimpong a go because before he injured his knee he was playing really good football. Unfortunently hes whinging about the lack of game time already though. Not sure why when he just came back from a serious injury, hope hes not another diarra

It was a question mate, just seeing if people rate him thats all. Not too sure about Baines he had a great season but im not too convinced a crosser of the ball is a priority. He actually need players that can attack the ball at set piece situation first. For me i think Andrés Guardado would be a great option, he would be avaliable on the cheap because of deportivos relegation and he is a far better player going foward.

Doesnt mean he had a shit season. They were relegated on the last day too, could of been any of 6 teams. So you only want players that currently play in the premier league ? thats a pretty limited approach and disregards the strength of other leagues. Theres a big difference between playing in a mid-table relegation prem team than there is to play for a champions league team like us anyway. Lets just get the right guys in, could give a fuck where they come from.

We have one of the hardest opening fixture lists in the Premiership. There is no time for players to get acclimatised to the pace of the game. We have to hit the ground running.

Baines and Enriques both know what to expect.

Its a football game mate, people play them all over the world. Why buy a player who is not as good as another player just because hes played in the league. Seems ridiculous, lets just get the best player. Andrés Guardado or fabio coentrao are both better players.

I’d be concerned about guardado’s defending. He did grow up as a winger and although he is good at going forward the priority for a left back must be that they are decent defenders first and good going forward second.

I actually think the opposite. If you look at the stats half our goals were conceded from set pieces so our defence from open play wasnt that bad last season. He actually has a major advantage over them in that he is miles quicker and we often get hit on the break, when some of our lazier players dont like tracking back (arshavin). He has a high work rate and speed to track back. Also we typically average about 60 % ball possession so i think its more vital for us to be more penetrative in possession of the ball. Having a more attack minded full back would give us alot more options in possesion. Clichy spends most of his time as an outball around half way and when he does get foward its so telegraphed that the opposition comfortably track back and clear any crosses. We could do with more players that look at getting in behind defences as opposed to playing so much in front of the opp. e.g. blackburn and liverpool at home.

Given a choice of signing a new defensive midfielder, I would go for Ajax’s vice captain Jan Vertonghen, who can also play left back & centre back.
Also his telepathy with Vermaelen, having played together before in club and national squad.
    A video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cktxb6qGrXw

Ajax plays quite similar football to us and any player coming from there should have little effort to acclimatise to our style of play. (Read present=Vermaelen, in the past = Bergkamp, Kanu, Overmars)

ok fair enough. Its a choice really, whether we want to defend by not letting out oponents have the ball or to defend by having good defenders.

I know lots of our goals are conceded at set pieces but I think most of the ones that were conceded from open play had an individual mistake in the build up. So maybe what I really want is a left back who, like sagna, may not be brilliant going forward but rarely makes mistakes at the back and i think that its more likely that players who think of themselves as defenders first are probably less likely to make silly mistakes like we have seen from clichy.

Really there shouldn’t have to be a compromise between the full backs either being good going forward OR backwards but for whatever reason there aren’t too many really top quality full backs at the moment.

    GD Star Rating

  • Pauly

Agreed mate, there should be no need for compromise. But it aint easy to find someone like that. I just want us to buy players for the right reasons not the wrong ones i.e. “oh hes english, hes got spirit or hes played in the prem”. I think we can defend by keeping possession and pressing more to force the opponents to play long. Teams in the prem already love a long ball, especially against us lets let them play into our hands. People bang on about how you can test the barce back four but no-one gets enough possession to even attempt to do so. I think we can do the same, we just need to fucking defend at set pieces. We came so close this season If we didnt give away a pen against spuds and against liverpool and nasri finishes his 1 on 1 against bolton we would have won the prem. We have best squad in the league, Man utds team is the worst its been in years. Lets not fuck it up again this time round.

agree there, plus it adds some versatility to the defence. However i feel man city would price us out of a move for him,as they tend to save on scouts (like liverpool) and going for who we target at times e.g when liverpool added a couple extra to the babel and torres deals when wegner was targeting them

I always like to read about the “targets” that Arsenal are chasing, last week, according to The Mirror, it was the Spud’s diminutive, and far from prolific, striker Defoe. This morning The People has a story about Wenger preparing a bid for… wait for it… Joey Barton!
