Arsenal Are Victims In Transfer Windows

wenger

No one can hide from the fact that the transfer fees have gone absolutely crazy, in recent years.

There are many reasons why this has happened, but everything relates to the obvious fact that football has become a business, rather than a sport.

In my opinion, there are two kinds of managers, now that we’ve experienced the inevitable switch – sponsored by Sky Sports.

First, we have people like Arsene Wenger who works with a highly sustainable business plan, which is also backed by a sensible board, who are not looking to invest ridiculous amounts of money into this plans.

On the other hand, we have managers who literally depend on having the ability to spend necessary funds on new players.

Sadly, seeing people like Wenger manage at the top-level has come a rarity.

With the sudden influx of (mostly) foreign, clueless billionaires throwing their ‘petty cash‘ of hundreds of millions of pounds in other teams’ faces, it’s become uncommon to see managers take risks by investing in exciting young talent.

For me, these football-oblivious owners have spoilt the game. I’m not bitter about us not spending huge amounts of cash. Nor am I demanding the current board to ‘spend silly’ on every player linked with us.

Admittedly, spending ‘big’ would be a quick fix, but I have too much pride to give in to that daunting option. With our admirable business plan, it’s only a matter of time before we become one of the major forces in world football.

And in doing so, we’ll be the only club to do it without spending hundreds of millions of pounds on players. We’re not there yet but still, I’m incredibly proud to support a team who has done things in the right way.

Until we reach the ultimate goal, I would like Arsene Wenger to remain at the helm. Given the current circumstances, he’s still the best man for the job – yes, even the absence of silverware!

This week, Gael Clichy is being linked with Roma and Liverpool, and it looks likely he’ll be part of a deal that will see him leave, after 187 appearances at the club since he moved to The Gunners from Cannes in 2003.

Despite being one of the most useful left-backs in the world – in my opinion, it looks like he’s going to leave in an insignificant deal that would be worth less than £10m.

Speaking of which, I think it’s ludicrous that Liverpool submitted such a measly bid of £5m for a player of such quality.

Agreed, he’s made some catastrophic mistakes in the past, but let’s be honest, who hasn’t?

I’m sure if Chelsea sold Fernando Torres this summer, they would be able to sell him for more than £30m, even after his apocalyptic first 6 months at Stamford Bridge.

There is recent speculation suggesting that Leighton Baines would be the replacement for Clichy, if the Frenchman is to leave Arsenal this summer. I don’t have an exact figure, but a deal of at least £15m sounds about right to me.

Maybe it’s just me, but I am adamant that Clichy is the better player and is also worth more than Baines.

Clichy is much more experienced with years of Champions League football under his belt, as wear as achieving more international caps. The Frenchman is also an intimidating threat to any opponent, with his dangerously rapid pace.

I will admit that Baines is clearly a better crosser of the ball, but I’d certainly still rate Clichy higher than the Everton left-back.

If he were to leave us for such a small amount, I’d be incredibly disappointed. Any club that can sign Gael Clichy for under £10m would be getting an extraordinary bargain!

The potential Gary Cahill deal is another great example of how English players are overpriced. A very good centre-back for sure, but no one can deny that his experience at the top level is limited.

Of course, I would like to see him at Arsenal next season, but don’t expect Arsene to spend if Bolton are going to rip us off, for such a risky deal – considering such a mammoth transfer fee for Arsenal Football Club.

I will refrain from discussing more examples, as they would only be echoes of what I have already said.

In an ideal world, we should just get Gael Clichy to change his name to Gary Clark. Then we could flog him to Manchester City in a rather luxurious £40m deal. Likewise, we should ask Gary Cahill to change his name to Kazimir Kowalski and buy him for a grand total of £1m!

I'm 20 and have been an Arsenal season ticket holder since 2006. My family has had Arsenal links since the 1920's, and the support is still going strong. I am at every home game, and also manage to get to multiple away games, when I can. I have been writing for various blogs and websites since I was 15, but have now settled down and have become a regular writer for Arsenalinsider. I also run my own Pro Evolution Soccer blog, Only Pro Evolutions. Arsenal is my passion. Writing is my passion. I was never good enough to play for The Arsenal, so I'll do the next best thing!

I accept the point of the blog, but Gael Clichy is in the last year of his contract and this more or less discounts a players value by about 50% so where you mention £10 million Gael Clichy’s actual value is £20 million, simply reduced due to the fact he can leave for free in 12 months. Fire sale!

Do not blame any one for this.

Most Arsenal players do stay no signing contract due to the fact that they get more wages in other clubs..

Accept it Arsenal could no longer attract a good player due to the fact that the club could not pay like Mancity £400000 a week and most on £150k to 250K a week.

Arsenal is long gone.. the only way to safe Arsenal is to not attend the game unless Arsenal listen to its fun.

Look now does not make sense if Cesc is leaving to swap him with Villa and get a samll money to but Scott. I thing either the gooners are gone menatl like the club bosses such as Arsen or paid to write this things. Please leave us alone we are already petrified by your fantacy gossip. Liverpool look like champions the way they are going on transfer so does Barca, and man utd… Where is Arsenal grapping the best players like Teves, or Cesc or Eto.

You are bloody jockers and leave the humble fun with your psycological rumor warfare. Thanks

No mate, when a player has 12 months left on a contract, the palyer is free to sign a contract elsewhere in 6 months time (January) without the knowledge of the club. It’s just that he still has to honour the remaining 5 months of the existing contract which usually expires 30th June.

even if clichy still has 1 year to his contract, due to his experiences in top level football, i agree with author for under 10m he is a bargain. look at cahill, bolton still value him 17m with 1 year remaining to his contract. i understand he got release clause to match but that’s practically irrelevance once you enter final year of your contract. anyway, i think wenger should just find other replacement to samba or cahill. i’m thinking bruno alves.

I do agree fully with you in your point. Arsenal are a economicly very strong club. We have a big yearly income, bigger than most of the clubs which take part in the economic doping. The problem for the clubs like Chealsea, ManCity is that if(when) their “providers” one day decide to stop pumping in money they will not be able to have a monthly payroll of that size, not event if they won all turnaments. Arsenal is one of few big clubs without growing debts. This race wont go on for ever. Our choice is to go with it now and down with it later or do it the “fair way” and come out stronger than anyone else.

The clubs in PL just keeps spending more and the debts is just growing. Big clubs like liverpool have been just hours from relegation and catastrophe due to debt.

Chelseas debt is more than 6 times bigger than arsenals, and they earn just have halve as big income as Arsenal do.

United have ha 4 times bigger debt than us and just have 2/3 of our yearly income.

Take in to account that we have built a stadium at a cost of €250m.

If the result of not keeping up in the spendings with the other clubs would lead to another 5 trophy-less years. It’s worth it, we can never risk our existences due to economic assault on the club.

The problem will come earlier than that for them with the FFP. If they (Citeh/Chaves etc) are excluded from the champions league in 3 years time then the owner will have to throw more money at the club for wages (as they will not be earning them from CL football) and may well lose interest more quickly without european nights!

Has anyone read the Swiss Ramble’s blog on arsenal finances in the transfer market which he published on May 31, 2011? http://swissramble.blogspot.com/2011/05/arsenals-transfer-budget.html?utm_source=BP_recent

I just had a read and it is-
    1. as usual incredibly well researched;
    2. in depth
    3. clearly indicates where we stand in this window.
Which appears to be dependent on selling deadwood and with about 50mil to work with.
I would recommend it to anyone seeking to understand in a technical manner our club’s machinations.

I think I heard Wenger or Gazidis (can’t remember which one) saying that the FFP came into play next summer but I was under the impression that the accounting period ending in 2012 was the first one to be assessed so it was already under way? Is this correct that transfers made now are made under the FFP rules?

If so, this transfer window should be a bit quieter among the big teams than in the past few years, shouldn’t it?

Arsenal’s “failure” is on the commercial income side of the business as per SR. and it amounts to a top quality player purchase each year. 10 odd million.

They may think they’ve a plan but the rules are very tight and ‘if it’s not in the rule book then you have to check with eufa’, And they’ll love screwing an English team over!
I can’t see any of the big teams risking it (except maybe the eufa club side – Barca).

Just had a quick look and he confirms that the 2010/11 season is the last one that’s not used. Although he does point out that the players cost (purchase/salary etc) is amortised over the period on his contract, but with the costs/salaries at Citeh & Chavs already, I can’t see them being able to spend much more without getting rid of some (and they’ll probably lose money on that as well).

I agree SR did a very solid review of Chelski and their Torres purchase some months back and how this purchase would throw them out of line with Fair play. http://swissramble.blogspot.com/search/label/UEFA%20Financial%20Fair%20Play

the writer said: “UEFA have given clubs every opportunity to meet the new guidelines with a phased implementation. The first season that they will start monitoring clubs is 2013/14, but this will take into account losses made in the two preceding years, namely 2011/12 and 2012/13.”

Player purchases are amortized over the life of the contract. Meaning that Torres would not be 50 mil in one season but say 5 mil each year over 10 (or whatever contract extended for)

I think clubs believe they can buy their way out of trouble with Uefa beginning after 2014!
So what are the real teeth in the fair play rules. Cause if no teeth and only the threat of european expulsion then doesnt mean alot.

In U.S. the NCAA has a monopoly over college sport which is extremely big business… except for the 18 to 24 year old athletes!!! As such their value is recognized in college drafts at the end of their playing year or years. If a player begins to work with an agent or receives gifts then they are deemed inelegiable. If in future years it is found a university’s player (on his own) broke these rules then wins and even championships can and are taken away. Look at Southern Cal of recent past and Ohio State football right now as examples.
So would uefa be willing to take away a championship? force clubs to give back the money paid which would be ill-gotten gains? And further ban teams from playing in the competition in the for future years? Now these would be teeth.
So what are the real teeth in the fair play rules. Cause if no teeth and only the threat of european expulsion then doesnt mean alot.
What? Europe is everything to these guys and the loss of income would mean they’re unlikely to get back in for quite a few years unless they start again with their squad using new and cheap players.Plus the PL has already agreed some basic FFP rules and is likely to take more and more of them over the next few years.

Also, just to clarify. No player signs one contract for 10 years. They may do 5 and then cancel and replace it 3 or 4 times over a 10 year period. Each time the remaining purchase price van be re-distributed over the next contract (plus salary of course) IIRC Torres was 5 years, so 50m plus salary divided by 5 = the annual debt for that player.

Clichy better than Baines? You’re having a laugh. Don’t get me wrong, I think Clichy is good, but not as good as Baines. Baines can defend, cross, take free kicks and score goals…Clichy hs pace…that’s bout it.

In fact torres contract was for 5 years writing quickly and by way of example was all. On other issue europe ban. The big issue there is the threat of expulsion versus actual expulsion. Farther in that fair play swiss ramble article they talk about european ban would be a last resort after years, 2,3 4? Of failing to balance the books. So in fact looking at 2016 at earliest! Ie about the last year of torres contract! Obviously they plan to cajol compliance not create with strict enforcement and significant sanctions. So there is the threat of european competition expulsion.

THE TRANSFER MARKET IS A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD. ARSENAL ARE ACTIVE PARTICIPANTS, PROBLEM IS THEY ARE SO OBSESSED WITH PROFITS, THEY WOULD RATHER WIN NO TROPHY THAN PAY AN ADDITIONAL DOLLAR FOR A GOOD GOALKEEPER (SHWARZER) OR DEFENDER (SAMBA). DAVID DEIN SHOULD BE BROUGHT BACK TO STRAIGHTEN OUT THE STINGY FRENCHMAN AND THE CLOWNS IN THE BOARDROOM. THESE CLOWNS WOULD NOT HAVE SANCTIONED A MOVE FOR CAMPBELL OR BEKARMP.

Arsenal are a fantastic business model, they have the right mentality in this ridiculous game, they have the best stadium in the country and do it all within a sensible budget, we at the lane are stuck in no mans land, we need quality to get to the next level consistently and we cannot get it because noone in their right mind signs for a team paying such shite wages, we need this move big time to a new ground and in the mean time I suggest you guys stop all this transfer nonsense and appreciate what you have at the helm, yes we all like to laugh at AW with his silly water bottle rants and tight arse ways but ultimately he is a living legend and knows what he is doing..stop talking nonsense about Cahill he is not an Arsenal player at all, he is another in the long line of over rated numpties that will cost a fortune for limited experience..chill out and enjoy what you have.. but for injuries you would have been crowned champions !!

The more one studies the finances of the game the more you respect the difficulties of growth.
Will fair play create more parity amongst clubs or less?
Tottenham are a perfect example. Tottenham need either a major redevelopment of the existing ground or a new ground. All the financial analysis of the game says it. But you gotta do something immediately. It will take more than 5 years to pull it off anyway. Fair play excludes ground investment but how can you continue to invest in your squad and build a new ground? It completely lends itself towards lean times as you make the investment and then begin to see the benefits of added income, debt payments… and doesn’t that perfectly define Arsenal’s last 6 years? No trophies but perfectly positioned for the future… unless someone loses their bottle and f*cks it all up! And it is why major investors now are fighting over ownership of the club.
