Parlour: Arsene Should Sign Defoe

defoe

Ray Parlour is urging Arsene Wenger to sign England striker Jermain Defoe, from arch rivals Tottenham.

In an exclusive interview with Talksport, the ex-Arsenal midfielder suggested that Defoe could be the answer to Arsenal’s problems.

There has been a great amount of speculation linking Defoe with Arsenal in recent weeks, and The Romford Pele believes The Gunners should go all out and sign the 28-year old forward from N17.

“They do need a striker. Marouane Chamakh found it difficult (last season). He did well in the early parts of the season but went off the boil a bit.”

“They should get someone who’s a little bit different, who can score a goal, like an Ian Wright. Jermain Defoe would be a good signing for me. Tottenham fans won’t like it but that’s how it goes these days. I was there when Sol Campbell signed and he was a great player for Arsenal.”

Parlour also went on to reveal that he believes Arsenal will not escape their trophy drought, if Arsene Wenger doesn’t add to his squad this summer.

“What he (Wenger) was trying to say is that when his best side is out, they’ve got a chance. The problem he’s got is in-depth.

“When his major players get injured, there is not enough quality behind who can come in and do a job. When I was playing, when vital players got injured like Dennis Bergkamp, we still had players who could come in and do a good job. That’s the difference now.

“If Arsenal get their top side out they are a very good side, there’s no doubting that. But if a couple of them get injured, have they got enough back-up? Players like Bendtner and Denilson, can they come in and do a sound job? Last season they had their chances but I don’t think they did.

“That’s what he’s got to look at. He’s got to look at trying to build a squad that, if he does have some suspensions or injuries which you don’t expect, then you can deal with it.”

I agree when he says that we need to strengthen our side. I’m certain no Arsenal fan could deny that. But could Jermain Defoe really be the player to help us end all of our problems? I’m not too sure.

If we were to sign him, I feel it would be a particularly risky deal, with a potential to ultimately end in disaster seeing him crash and burn, just like Robbie Keane did when he accepted the challenge and he signed for Liverpool.

It would be a huge step-up for Defoe, and I’m not too confident on whether he would be able to fulfill our expectations.

Admittedly, he has done well for Spurs, Portsmouth and West Ham during his career, but he has never really been given the chance to perform at the highest level. Perhaps a clear sign that everyone, including himself, knows the limit of his own ability.

However, to be fair to him he has never been given a fair chance at the highest level as he has only experienced a handful of games in the Champions League – most of which he was forced to sit on the bench.

He was only given a chance when Peter Crouch went ‘physco‘ in Madrid. Alternatively, his international career isn’t exactly impressive either, being given limited opportunities throughout his career for the England national team.

Is Parlour talking sense, or do we need a better, more proven and experienced striker to come in this summer?

I'm 20 and have been an Arsenal season ticket holder since 2006. My family has had Arsenal links since the 1920's, and the support is still going strong. I am at every home game, and also manage to get to multiple away games, when I can. I have been writing for various blogs and websites since I was 15, but have now settled down and have become a regular writer for Arsenalinsider. I also run my own Pro Evolution Soccer blog, Only Pro Evolutions. Arsenal is my passion. Writing is my passion. I was never good enough to play for The Arsenal, so I'll do the next best thing!

longz and shergar need to go onto there own teams fansite (spuds.r.us.com) Parlour played in one of the best Arsenal teams ever, his opinion means much more than un-educated planks like you two. and as much i believe we dont need defoe, Parker would be a great signing for any team. Aresenal do need more fight in there game, and Parker has that. but, that said, Barton is the man to turn Arsenal back into that dominating team from 7 years ago. OK, he is a bit reckless, but he is actually quite good too, and hes got a real passion to do well. add him to our already skillfull squad and i think we can do good things next season. also i have too say, screw all you wenger haters, that man helped transform the Arsenal into one of the greatest and best managed teams in europe. up the arse.

ex arsenal players make bad football advisers, ian wright, paul merson, tony adam, ray parlour…maybe george graham dictarship kinda left them clueless about football. walcott did good last season maybe ray should have asked arsene to buy a prominent winger so theo could move in the middle. but please no defoe

the problem with the idea of barton to arsenal is realy ovious, arsenal must learn to play with 10 men if they sign barton, the way refaree treat arsenal it will be a disastor if barton were to play for arsenal.Barton will be good for Man U though,as they seam to get their way when it comes to referees here is the proof.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-8dOjeVC80

Carlos Tevez scored more league goals than the entire Tottenham striker roster combined last season. Why do we want any of them?

    L-Back: Sakho
    Midfielder: Melo
R-Winger: Hulk (Walcott down the middle)

Coz your dear manager (AW) has to sell 15 players of his current squad to buy Tevez.

Parlour knows AW cant buy players like Mata and might well end up goofing on Gervinho. So, going for a proven solution at hand is Defoe. And ifd Defoe is really not happy, this is a time Arsenal can buy a striker who knows where to shoot when he is in the D and not tip-tap-pass-piss waiting for 5 defenders to crowd the penalty box.

P.S Parlour is talking rot, spurs fans idolised Campbell, most of the ones I know think Defoe is shite, he smashes everything, has no composure and scores 18 goals in 7 games and does nothing in the rest.he goes to you with my blessing

No! No! No! Not Defoe, please not Defoe, the bum couldn’t get a regular start for the Spuds so why in heaven’s name would we want him?

If Wenger does sign this poor apology for a striker I will believe that the great man has finally lost his marbles.

    Sign a real strker Drogba.

Ray has definitely earned the right to make such comments, we all have to aacept that! Defoe? I think what comes out clearly is we need a goal poacher amongst the team, not just the ball players! Someone whose sole purpose and expertise lie onnly on scoring goals. Someone who is just not interested in 12 touches in the box! A fact is Defoe can score them…

Everybody has the right to make themselves look a complete ass, Ray Parlour has jumped at the chance to do so by suggesting that Wenger signs, the never was and never shall be top class striker, Defoe.
