Cesc Fabregas has broken his silence on all things Arsenal to give backing to the team’s 2-1 win over Cologne in yesterday’s pre-season friendly match and to wish injured Connor Henderson a speedy recovery.
Two goals from the lively looking Gervinho were enough to see off the Germans who benefitted from an horrific and crazy own goal from new right-back Carl Jenkinson. But there was concern as the 90 minutes came to a close when youngster Henderson was taken off on a stretcher with a serious looking injury to his right ankle.
Fabregas, who has remained pretty quiet of late as his impending move to Barcelona draws inevitably nearer, obviously watched the live coverage of the game and was prompted to send words of encouragement via his Twitter account.
He tweeted: “Good game and the team looks really fresh and ready. I hope @henderson_91 has nothing serious and can keep progressing and making his mark.”
OK, it’s not War and Peace but is shows he still has a healthy respect for the club which has given him the platform to become the world superstar he is today. Perhaps, Cesc, now is the time to state publicly your position in all of this?
AW is set to hike his £12million bid for Everton defender Phil Jagielka to £17million, says the Express. The paper claims AW will up his bid once Everton boss David Moyes is back behind his training ground desk on Tuesday, following the club’s pre-season trip to the USA.
Meanwhile, the Mail reports that Emmanuel Eboue is close to a move to Galatasaray after the Turkish club tabled a £4million bid. The Arsenal right-back has been left out of the club’s pre-season tour of Asia.
Elsewhere this fine Sunday morning and former Gunners boss George Graham has voiced his concern that the Arsenal might struggle finish in the top six next season.
He told the Sunday Mirror: “The simple fact is that Arsenal could well be facing, in the next few years, the prospect of a battle to stay in the top six rather than the top four finish that Arsene has brought them – against the financial odds – every year.
“To compete for the title this year is going to be a huge task. You look at what Manchester United and Manchester City have spent already and what Chelsea are capable of spending. There is the prospect that Arsenal could be in the same kind of bracket as Everton and Aston Villa.
“The best players will naturally congregate at the most successful clubs. That is just common sense. And those clubs will pay wages that Arsenal cannot match and pay fees that Arsenal cannot lay out.”
