Henry: I had an amazing relationship with Arsenal

Ahead of the New York Red Bulls’ visit to London for the Emirates Cup, Thierry Henry is preparing for an emotional visit to a place he still considers home.

The former Arsenal striker is looking forward to playing against his old team in the friendly tournament, as he still feels a strong connection with the club.

He does regret, however, that the team had to leave Highbury, as he only played one season at the Emirates before leaving for Barcelona.

“I was injured a lot my last season at Arsenal, our first season at the new ground,” he said. “When I come back now, I recognise all the people, of course: the chef, the groundsman, the guy on the door. But once I’m out on the pitch? Not really. All my memories are of Highbury. I know the move to the Emirates had to happen but Highbury will always be the place for me.

“I had an amazing relationship with Arsenal supporters. A weird one, too, though. I know I can be a pain in the neck. And they knew that. But I think they understood me, even when I was a pain. They knew how I was. And I knew how they were feeling about me. Without those fans, I’d never have done what I did. The people who worked around the Club, too. They helped me understand what it meant to play for the Club. You know: what it meant to beat Tottenham!

“You need big shoulders to play for Arsenal. The cannon is heavy. But the supporters see everything. They see what you’re doing, what you’re trying to do. It’s a great thing about English fans. Winning helps but, if you play hard and respect the shirt, they remember that. And that’s something priceless for me.”

Henry added that he is glad to be playing against the Gunners in a friendly, rather than a competitive game, as he had to do two seasons ago for Barcelona.

On that game, he said: “It was a weird experience. That was the worst possible draw for me. Obviously I had to play hard and try to help my team. But it was if I was playing against my brother. I had a job to do but, you know, you love your brother and you don’t ever want to hurt your brother. This time, I think, will be completely different. It’s a friendly game, for a start. We’ll be trying not to take a beating, though.”

I'm 23-years-old and currently living in Bristol, studying to be a journalist. I've been hooked on Arsenal since I was about 10, and as much as I sometimes wish I could stop, I can't give them up. Favourite player of all time would have to be Patrick Vieira for the sheer passion with which he played the game.

Bull crap Henry is no King to me, he sulked like a girl trying to get his move to Barcelona, his performance in the champions league final was a disgrace as well. Then when he was leaving he came on the Arsenal TV giving a sob story. Dont gno sob story, u went for money and to win things, if you had anythign about you you would have stayed and helped the club and the players transition from highbury to the new stadium and helped the younger players.

Bergkamp stayed loyal, never complained, did his thing, and acted like a true pro. Thats why Bergkamp was and is the king.

Wow are people seriously dissing Henry. The man was THE reason why we were so successful up until 2005. He will always be one the greatest players to on the red and white.

Thierry Henry… The most clinical finisher The Premiership has ever witnessed, so much so that I remember fans from OTHER TEAMS applauding him when he scored against them! The last day at Highbury was a celebration of moving on to a bigger footing for us, but I know what he’s on about, it was also one of the saddest days I’ve ever known as an Arsenal fan, Highbury will always be home to me, being only 22 I’ve known it as “the house I grew up in” sounds sad but it’s true. For anyone to say this man is not a legend smacks of complete and utter disrespect for a man who gave everything for our fans and the farewell message to us fans, no-one else in world football would have done that after being at a club for only 8 years, he wasn’t Arsenal born and bred but he loved us like family and we loved him for that. True Bergkamp was absolutely exceptional, I cant pick between the two in terms of greatness, I know they are equal. Any man that gives his all for this club is a hero and a King in my eyes, some of the players of today could learn a thing or two just watching videos of TA6, PV4, MK5, DB10 and of course last but never least TH14. ALL WERE KINGS all will forever live long in the memory of this Arsenal fan at least.

I disagree. Henry can be the King as long as we accept that Bergkamp is God…

Henry wouldn’t have achieved as much if he didn’t have God feeding him with inch perfect passes 5 times a game. Dennis is the Creator. Same reason why Anelka was so good for that one season and Ljungberg as well for the time they played with Dennis.

Henry was the King of highbury, his work rate, goals and all round play was awesome, he was arrogant but if you are that good you have every right to be, his in our history forever!!!! Personally my favourite Arsenal player has to be Tony Adams, but Henry somes up there, and the special fact he hated the spuds, never lost against them and always scored!!!!

‘if you play hard and respect the shirt, they remember that. And that’s something priceless for me.’ – that should be drilled into some of our mob.

Soooo, today. Djourou/Squillaci. Was it one last wind up?

3 draws and two own goals and the usual defensive cock ups in preseason doesn’t bode well does it?

Wenger: ” The final 20 minutes were a bit like yesterday, you could see the continuity in our game went.” oh you mean like all of LAST season.

    Plus ca change.
