Valencia hold firm on Mata

Arsenal appear to have blown their chances of signing Juan Mata for a reasonable price after Valencia coach Unai Emery said they would not sell their Spain starlet.

Last week the Gunners were in talks to sign the highly-rated young playmaker, who had a £22 million release clause in his contract that has since expired, meaning any club wanting him may now have to pay significantly more.

With Arsenal dragging their feet over this summer’s transfer targets – they have already reportedly seen a relatively low bid for Everton defender Phil Jagielka rejected – it seems another top player could be out of their reach with Emery insisting Mata would stay.

“Mata has gone through a process of doubts about his future,” Emery said after the 23-year-old scored Valencia’s first goal in a 2-1 friendly win over Hamburg.

“But now we all believe he will stay at Valencia.”

Arsenal were believed to be holding out for news about the futures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri before committing to an offer for Mata, with the midfield duo tipped to join Barcelona and Manchester City respectively.

    Welcome back!

Just sell Nasri and Fabregas, for whatever we can get, and then get on with buying the players we need.

£55 million for the two should mean we can afford Jagielka, Baines and Mata.

    Just do it!!!

I know what you are saying is right but in truth where do you strengthen our side ? they need to be top notch, unlike you lot we have good central defenders, the best young right back in England, Ekotto is coming along nicely, the best left sided midfielder in the prem, a good holding player in sandro and Modric is class, VDV would get in any side..so we needed a decent keeper, and a decent forward..shall we discuss your weak central pairing, poor keepers, poor left back, weak left side, and a forward short…nah best not hey ! xx

I’d keep Sagna over ekotto anyday plus you only mentioned 5 players there lol.

Your ‘prolific’ attack was 17 goals shy of our total and your marvellous defence let 3 more goals slip past them.

The window isn’t closed yet Bigsy my boy.

I never said our forwards were great, look we can argue about tottenham v arsenal all day, but ultimately we are seperated by one place and considering we drew 14 games last season and most points were thrown away against the likes of Blackpool, it is fair to say we ended up in a very frustrating way, we can all reflect on points dropped and where it went wrong, but the gap has never been smaller between our 2 clubs in recent times, and considering you have twice our revenue each week that is failure from Arsenal…be careful how you reply to that or you may just agree with your board on the lack of spending..ha ha

    bigsyisback,

Granted our final points/positioning was close which is very disappointing considering we were flying along until the CC then it was downhill fast, so ultimately for three quarters of the season there was the usual gulf between us then the shit hit the fan. (no pun)

I certainly don’t agree on the lack of spending, I don’t rightly know who to blame, nor do I understand how we’re still using Squillacci ffs and not reinforcing with at least one defender (CH and LB reqd).

For the first time as long as I can remember I am not optimistic for the forthcoming season unless 2 or 3 quality acquisitions happen soon.
