We NEED To Buy A New Striker

As most Arsenal fans have had to accept over the last decade, the African Cup of Nations takes place every 2 years, at the midway point of the Premier League season. And the tournament is set to kick off again early next year, when the 2012 finals start in January.

The qualifying stages are well underway, but are slowly drawing to a close, with the finals just over 5 months away now. The tournament will be co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, and will take place between January 21 – February 12 next year.

I’ll move on, and get to my point immediately. After all, time is of the essence.

Arsenal need to buy a new striker before the end of this summer transfer window. But with just over 2 weeks left of the current window, time is running out.

Arsene Wenger has just three proper strikers at his disposal – assuming that Nicklas Bendtner and Carlos Vela will both leave the club this summer.

Robin van Persie, Marouane Chamakh and Gervinho – two of which are likely to go away in January to represent their respective countries at the African Cup of Nations.

The Ivory Coast have already qualified, by winning Group H, after winning all 4 of their group games. Assuming the Ivory Coast will go far in the tournament, that means that Arsenal new boy Gervinho, will be absent for nearly an entire month next year.

Morocco are currently top of Group D, and it’s likely that they will qualify for the finals. It is expected that Marouane Chamakh will be joining Gervinho, and will also head to Africa to represent his country in January.

That leaves Robin van Persie on his own as the only proper striker at the club, unless you want Carlos Vela and Nicklas Bendtner sticking around – or alternatively, you are happy with Andrei Arshavin playing up top on his own again?

As you can probably tell from my tone, I am desperate for Arsene to invest in a new striker. I wouldn’t be happy if we were to play wingers and midfielders upfront again. We only did that last year, because we were forced to do so. This time round, we have a choice, so we shouldn’t have to experience that again.

Additionally, I hate to say it but no Arsenal fan can run from the fact that it’s very unlikely that Robin van Persie will be able to last a full season, without picking up any significant injuries.

As much as I love van Persie, I just can’t see him playing a whole month, without picking up any strains or sprains. Like the transfer of Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona, it’s something we’ve all had to accept.

Ultimately, Vela could stay and dare I say it, so could Bendtner. But then again, would you be happy with that scenario?

I will assume that some people will say that we can wait until January – and part of me can accept that. By then, we’ll know who’s away and who’s not, and will be able to take the appropriate action.

But if it turned out that we needed to invest in a new striker, he would have to settle in immediately.

As much as I like the prospect of us signing a player who would adapt to the Premier League so swiftly, I just can’t see it happening. It’s incredibly rare for a player to come in, and settle down that quickly – no matter how good they are.

But more importantly, after a long and arduous summer, we finally have access to the Cesc fund, so surely we could use some (if not, all?) of the cash on a new a striker to come in?

Since we signed him we have heard nothing about him getting a work permit or even joining the squad for training.

Also, he is only 19, has little experience, has probably never lived away from his home and family in a different country and culture and won’t have played against as good defences. Is that the sort of player who is going to win us games this season.

Even Bergkamp and Henry took time to adapt and it will be the same if not longer with Miyaichi and Campbell. Add to that the fact they are so much younger so its even more difficult for them. They both look very promising but will both take time for them to get to the standard they need to be at to be playing first team for arsenal.

Same scenario in midfield with Song for Cameroon and Frimpong likely for Ghana. We could lose the season within that period

I think we need a defensive midfielder who is better than Song anyway. He’s always lacked positional awareness and positional discipline and it now seems quite easy for teams to counter attack against us through the middle because we don’t have a DM who breaks up the play in the right areas at the right times as Gilberto used to.

Hopefully Frimpong will choose to play for England instead of Ghana but we’ll see.

Bobby Zamora or Berbatov anyone? It is a shame but I don’t think Chamakh is up for it in any case, he doesn’t have the killer instinct. Will Joel get a work permit, i would also like too see what Wenger does with Jon harper Toral & the other chap we signed from Barca. He promised them that he would fast track there careers but with us desperate to win something, will he still play them in the Carling Cup?

ACN or not we do need another option up top, chamakh seems to be turning into the new heskey. walcott might actually do an ok job but wouldnt wana risk it though, he’d need plenty of supply from midfield. dont really think a striker will be signed as finding a defender will probably eat up all the remaining time left in the window

Campbell might not get a work permit could possibly use Irish roots.

Still think Charlton Cole would be excellent with V persie palying of him for only 6million its worth a chance

Arsene for failing to add  to the midfoeld when he knew Cesc will eventually leave is a concern. It will be a miracle if we win at tge Grove tomorrow.

If we had no choice but to play wingers up front last season

Why did we play bender on the wing – as a striker, should he not have been played up front

Do not completely excuse wenegr from this – it is clear that he sees the midfield and strike force as an interchangeable unit – strikers on the wing, wingers up front, chamakh and van persie running around the middle of park

And il end on one note….. Walcott will be given the strikers option, AOC and Ryo will be given the wings

Two weeks to go till the end of the transfer window and it doesn’t look like anyone is close to coming in.

With the loss of Cesc, Eboué, (potentially Nasri, Bendtner, Vela & Almunia) the squad is looking a little light in areas particularly defence and striker positions. If all these OUTS are completed this week it leaves the club with one week to get INS.

Hello fans its a pity that u all doesn’t no Arsene wenger anymore he wil not buy any player come January even wen the few strikers go to their respective countries for Africa nation cup that makes me call him a useless man and i will continues to insult him untill he change from his stingy attitude, moreover tell me why van persie would leave the club nest summer? Arsene wenger need to invest in the club to keep the players and win something for the team, thats what i just have to say for now
